Constituents Flood Another GOP Congressman’s Town Halls And Angrily Confront Him

Constituents of Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) flooded two town hall meetings on Saturday to confront and boo the congressman over the GOP’s vows to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and strip public funding from Planned Parenthood.

One event was supposed to take place in a senior center, but it moved outside because so many people showed up.

Attendees loudly booed Reed when he said he did not support public funds for Planned Parenthood.

“I do not support taxpayer-funded paying of abortion,” Reed said, prompting boos. A woman in the front of the crowd immediately fact-checked his remark.

“You, an elected official, [are] giving misinformation,” she said. “Right now, our taxes do not pay for abortions. They pay for mammograms, they pay for birth control.”

“Planned Parenthood, less than 3 percent of the services they provide is abortion. And none of that 3 percent is funded by you,” she added.

Indeed, the Hyde Amendment, passed in 1976 by Congress, prohibits the use of public funds to pay for abortions, so there is no “taxpayer-funded paying of abortion.”

The constituents also booed loudly when Reed offered details on what a replacement for Obamacare could look like. They jeered when he called the Affordable Care Act a “failing system” and suggested that a new system would give more Americans health savings accounts. Most Americans can’t afford to put aside the money required for these accounts.

The crowd chanted in unison, “How can the poor get savings accounts?”

When Reed said this could be fixed simply by growing the economy, the crowd booed loudly again.

At a second town hall meeting later in the day, Reed said Americans would get tax credits to pay for health insurance, according to the Buffalo News. When the audience asked how those credits would be used, Reed replied, “That is something we’re still working on.”

The crowd also pushed Reed to pressure President Donald Trump to release his tax returns. Reed was one of 23 Republicans who voted against legislation to request Trump’s tax returns from the Treasury Department.

The event on Saturday was the latest of a number of recent town hall meetings in which constituents have angrily confronted GOP elected officials about their efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Earlier this month, Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) left a town hall with a police escort after constituents confronted him. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) also faced chants of “Do your job” and “Your last term” at a town hall last week. Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) complained that “women are in my grill” over Obamacare repeal. Brat has since walked back the comment, which offended many.

The angry confrontations have prompted some Republicans to cancel town hall appearances altogether.

This Is What Obamacare’s Critics Won’t Admit Or Simply Don’t Understand

THOUSAND OAKS, California ― Maryann Hammers is likely to die from ovarian cancer someday. But she hopes someday won’t come anytime soon.

Hammers, 61, received the diagnosis in late 2013, and doctors told her that it was stage 3-C, which meant that she could live for many years with the right treatment and a little luck. So far, she’s had both. She’s in remission for the second time, and her last course of chemotherapy ended a year and a half ago. But recent blood tests detected elevated levels of a protein associated with tumors, she explained when we met a few weeks ago. “Maybe it’s a fluke,” she said. “I hope so. I kinda feel like the clock is ticking.”

If the cancer is back, Hammers said, she may need surgery similar to her two previous operations — “gigantic surgeries, gutted like a fish and hospitalized for many days.” Chemotherapy would likely come next, plus medication, hospitalization, and home care. But Hammers considers herself lucky because she’s been able to get treatment at City of Hope, a highly respected Southern California cancer research and treatment center, and luckier still that she’s been able to pay for the treatment with insurance — an Anthem Blue Cross policy she bought through Covered California, the exchange her state created under the Affordable Care Act.

To hear President Donald Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans tell it, Obamacare has been a disaster, even for those who obtained coverage through the law. Hammers has a very different perspective. She’s a freelance writer and editor, which means she has no employer-provided insurance. In the old days, if she’d gone shopping for a policy with her cancer diagnosis, she would have struggled to find a carrier willing to sell her one.

I’m terrified. … Do you know how easy it is to use a million dollars when you’re getting cancer treatment?
Maryann Hammers, Thousand Oaks, California

And it’s not just the pre-existing condition guarantee, which even critics like Trump say they support, that Hammers has found so valuable. The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover a wide range of services and treatments — which, in her case, has included multiple shots of Neulasta, a medication that boosts white blood cell counts and typically costs several thousand dollars per injection. The law also prohibits annual or lifetime limits on benefits, which, as a long-term cancer patient, she would be a prime candidate to exceed.

Policies with such robust coverage inevitably cost thousands of dollars a year, more than Hammers could afford on her own — particularly since battling the disease has cut into her work hours. But the law’s generous tax credits discount the premiums and help with the out-of-pocket costs, too. “Without the Affordable Care Act, I honestly do not know what I would have done,” she said.

The coverage Hammers has today still isn’t as good as what she had years ago, when she worked for a company that provided benefits. But it’s better than what she had in the years right before the cancer diagnosis, when she was buying insurance on her own. The latter plan covered fewer services and came with out-of-pocket costs high enough to discourage her from getting checkups. Obamacare’s introduction of free preventive screenings led her to schedule a long-overdue colonoscopy. During routine preparation for that procedure, a physician first felt a lump in her abdomen.

Sometimes Hammers wonders whether, with less sporadic doctor visits, the cancer might have been caught a little sooner. “But I couldn’t afford a fat doctor’s bill. And I thought I was super healthy.”

These days, something else looms even larger in her mind — the possibility that Trump and the Republican Congress will repeal the health care law without an adequate replacement, or maybe with no replacement at all.

“I’m terrified — isn’t that crazy?” Hammers said. “My biggest source of stress right now isn’t the fact that I have incurable cancer. It’s the prospect of losing my insurance.”

What American Health Care Used To Look Like

To appreciate the significance of stories like Hammers’ and what they say about the Affordable Care Act, it helps to remember what used to happen to people like her before the law took effect. By 2009, when President Barack Obama took office, roughly 1 in 6 Americans had no health care insurance, and even the insured could still face crippling medical bills. As a reporter covering health care during those years, I met these people. Some of their stories stand out, even now, because they capture the old system at its callous, capricious worst.

Gary Rotzler, a quality engineer at a defense contractor in upstate New York, lost his family coverage in the early 1990s when he lost his job. He ended up uninsured for two years, while he juggled stints as an independent contractor. His wife, Betsy, made do without doctor visits even after she started feeling some strange pains. By the time she got a checkup, she had advanced breast cancer. Desperate efforts at treatment failed. After she died, Gary, a father of three, had to declare bankruptcy because of all the unpaid medical bills.

Jacqueline Ruess, a widow in south Florida, thought she was insured. But then she needed expensive tests when her physicians suspected she had cancer. Although the tests were negative, the insurer refused to pay the bills because, it said, a brief episode of a routine gynecological problem in her past qualified as a pre-existing condition.

Tony Montenegro, an immigrant from El Salvador living in Los Angeles, was uninsured and working as a security guard, until untreated diabetes left him legally blind.

Marijon Binder, an impoverished former nun in Chicago, was sued by a Catholic hospital over medical expenses she couldn’t pay.

And Russ Doren, a schoolteacher in a Denver suburb, believed he had good insurance until the bills for his wife’s inpatient treatment at a psychiatric hospital hit the limit for mental health coverage. The hospital released her, despite worries that she was not ready. A few days later, she took her own life.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was an effort to address these kinds of problems — to carry on the crusade for universal coverage that Harry Truman had launched some 60 years before. But precisely because Obama and his allies were determined to succeed where predecessors had failed, they made a series of concessions that necessarily limited the law’s ambition.

They expanded Medicaid and regulated private insurance rather than start a whole new government-run program. They dialed back demands for lower prices from drugmakers, hospitals and other health care industries. And they agreed to tight budget constraints for the program as a whole, rather than risk a revolt among more conservative Democrats. These decisions meant that health insurance would ultimately be more expensive and the new system’s financial assistance would be less generous.

Still, projections showed that the law would bring coverage to millions while giving policymakers tools they could use to reduce medical costs over time. When the Senate passed its version of the legislation in December 2009, then-Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) described the program as a “starter home” with a solid foundation and room for expansion.

Where Obamacare Failed And Where It Succeeded

Seven years later, Trump and the Affordable Care Act’s other critics insist that the program has been a boondoggle — that the Obamacare starter home needs demolition. Some of their objections are philosophical, and some, like the persistent belief that the law set up “death panels,” are fantastical. But others focus on the law’s actual consequences.

High on that list of consequences are the higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs that some people face. The new rules, like coverage of pre-existing conditions, have made policies more expensive, and Obamacare’s financial aid frequently doesn’t offset the increases. A “rate shock” wave hit suddenly in the fall of 2013, when insurers unveiled their newly upgraded plans and in many cases canceled old ones — infuriating customers who remembered Obama’s promise that “if you like your plan, you can keep it,” while alienating even some of those sympathetic to what Obama and the Democrats were trying to do.

I’ve interviewed plenty of these people, too. A few weeks ago, I spoke with Faisuly Scheurer, a real estate agent from Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She and her husband, who works in the restaurant business, were excited about the health care law because they’d struggled to find decent, affordable insurance. They make about $ 60,000 a year, before taxes, with two kids and college tuition looming in the not-distant future, she said.

In late 2013, they checked out their options and learned that, after tax credits, coverage would cost $ 360 a month. Scheurer said she remembers thinking, “OK, that is really tight. But if the benefits are good, we are going to have to skimp on other things to make it work.” Then she learned about the deductible, which was nearly $ 13,000 per year. “My disappointment was indescribable.”

The Scheurer family ultimately decided to remain uninsured. They’re not the only ones, and that has weakened the system as a whole. The people eschewing coverage tend to be relatively healthy, since they’re most willing to take the risk of no coverage. That’s created big problems for insurers, which need the premiums from healthy folks to offset the high medical bills of people with serious conditions.

Many insurers have reacted by raising premiums or pulling out of some places entirely, leaving dysfunctional markets in North Carolina and a handful of other states. Just this week, Humana, which had already scaled back its offerings, announced that it was pulling out of the Affordable Care Act exchanges altogether. At least for the moment, 16 counties in Tennessee don’t have a single insurer committed to offering coverage in 2018.

Trump, Ryan and other Republicans pounced on the Humana news, citing it as more proof of a “failed system” and the need for repeal. That’s pretty typical of how the political conversation about the Affordable Care Act has proceeded for the last seven years. The focus is on everything that’s gone wrong with Obamacare, with scant attention to what’s gone right.

And yet the list of what’s gone right is long.

  • In states like California and Michigan, the newly regulated markets appear to be working as the law’s architects intended, except for some rural areas that insurers have never served that well. Middle-class people in those states have better, more affordable options.

  • It looks like more insurers are figuring out how to make their products work and how to successfully compete for business. Customers have turned out to be more price-sensitive than insurers originally anticipated. In general, the carriers that struggle are large national companies without much experience selling directly to consumers, rather than through employers.

  • Last year’s big premium increases followed two years in which average premiums were far below projections, a sign that carriers simply started their pricing too low. Even now, on average, the premiums people pay for exchange insurance are on a par with, or even a bit cheaper than, equivalent employer policies — and that’s before the tax credits.

  • The majority of people who are buying insurance on their own or get their coverage through Medicaid are satisfied with it, according to separate surveys by the Commonwealth Fund and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. The level of satisfaction with the new coverage still trails that involving employer-provided insurance, and it has declined over time. But it’s clearly in positive territory

And then there’s the fact that the number of people without health insurance is the lowest that government or private surveys have ever recorded. When confronted with questions about the people who gained coverage because of the law, Republicans often say something about sparing those people from disruption ― and then argue that even those who obtained insurance through the law are suffering and no better off. This claim is wildly inconsistent with the experience of people like Maryann Hammers ― and, more important, it’s wildly inconsistent with the best available research.

People are struggling less with medical bills, have easier access to primary care and medication, and report that they’re in better health, according to a study that appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015. The number of people forgoing care because of costs or being “very worried” about paying for a catastrophic medical bill dropped substantially among the newly insured, Kaiser Foundation researchers found last year when they focused on people in California.

A bunch of other studies have turned up similar evidence, All of them gibe with a landmark report on the effects of Massachusetts’ 2006 insurance expansion, which was a prototype for the national legislation. Residents of that state experienced better health outcomes and less financial stress, according to the study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

“Though it’s had no shortage of controversies and stumbles, there’s really no denying that the ACA has created historic gains in insurance coverage,” said Larry Levitt, a senior vice president at the Kaiser Foundation. “With better coverage that has fewer holes, access to health care has improved and many have better protection from crushing medical bills.”

What Repeal Would Really Mean

Reasonable people can disagree about whether these achievements justify Obamacare’s costs, which include not only higher premiums for the young and healthy but also hefty new taxes on the wealthiest Americans. That’s a debate about values and priorities as much as facts.

What’s not in dispute, or shouldn’t be, is the stark choice on the political agenda right now.

Democratic lawmakers still argue for the principle that Truman laid out in 1948: “health security for all, regardless of residence, station, or race.” They think the Affordable Care Act means the U.S. is closer to that goal and that the next step should be to bolster the law ― by using government power to force down the price of drugs, hospital services and other forms of medical care, while providing more generous government assistance to people who still find premiums and out-of-pocket costs too onerous. Basically, they want people like Faisuly Scheurer to end up with the same security that people like Maryann Hammers already have.

Some Republicans talk as if they share these goals. Trump has probably been the most outspoken on this point, promising to deliver “great health care at lower cost” and vowing that “everybody would be covered.” But other Republicans reject the whole concept of health care as a right. Although it’s theoretically possible to draw up a conservative health plan that would improve access and affordability, these aren’t the kinds of plans that Republicans have in mind.

There’s a face to this law, there’s a face to people that are going to be affected by it.
Angela Eilers, Yorba Linda, California

Their schemes envision substantially less government spending on health care, which would mean lower taxes for the wealthy but also less financial assistance for everybody else. Republicans would make insurance cheaper, but only by allowing it to cover fewer services and saddling beneficiaries with even higher out-of-pocket costs. The result would be some mix of more exposure to medical bills and more people without coverage. If Republicans repeal the Affordable Care Act without replacing it ― a real possibility, given profound divisions within the GOP over how to craft a plan ― 32 million more people could go uninsured, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

That would mean real suffering, primarily among those Americans who benefit most from the law now ― the ones with serious medical problems, or too little income to pay for insurance on their own, or both.

Jay Stout, a 20-year-old in Wilmington, North Carolina, is one of those people. He was in good health until a head-on car collision nearly severed his arm and landed him in the hospital for more than a month. Surgeries and rehabilitation would have cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars that, as a community college student working part-time as a busboy, he could never have paid — if not for the Blue Cross plan that his mother had bought through the Affordable Care Act. When we spoke a few weeks ago, he told me the insurance has been “irreplaceable” and that losing it “would be totally devastating.”

Meenakshi Bewtra had never had a serious health problem until her first year at the University of Pennsylvania medical school, when she developed severe gastrointestinal problems — the kind that forced her into the hospital for two months and drove her to drop out of school. Her insurance lapsed, which meant that her GI issues became a pre-existing condition. She eventually found coverage and today she’s a professor of medicine at Penn, where she moonlights as an advocate for universal health insurance.

“For the first time, I truly understood what comprehensive health insurance meant,” Bewtra said, remembering what it was like to become fully covered. “I did not have to worry about how many times I saw a doctor, or how many lab tests I had to get, or having to ration out medications.”

Angela Eilers, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, isn’t worrying about her own health. It’s her daughter Myka who has a congenital heart condition called pulmonary stenosis, which makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood to the lungs. The little girl has required multiple surgeries and will need intensive medical treatment throughout her childhood.

In 2012, Angela’s husband, Todd, was laid off from his job at an investment firm. Since going without insurance was not an option, they took advantage of COBRA to stay on his old company’s health plan. It was expensive, and Eilers recalled panicking over the possibility they might not be able to pay the premiums. “I remember sitting at the table, thinking of plans. What would be our plan? One of them was … giving up our parents rights to my mom, because she has really good health insurance.”

Eventually her husband started his own consulting business, and that gave them the income to keep up with premiums until 2014 — when they were able to obtain coverage through the Affordable Care Act. Today they have a gold plan, one of the most generous available, for which they pay around $ 20,000 a year. Even though they make too much to qualify for financial assistance, they’re grateful for the coverage. Seven-year-old Myka has already run up more than a half-million dollars in medical bills. In the old days, before Obamacare, they would have worried about hitting their plan’s lifetime limit on benefits.

The family’s coverage has become more expensive over the years. They wish the price were lower, but they’re also not complaining about that. “I’m thankful that the letter was a premium hike, rather than ‘Sorry, we are not going to cover your daughter anymore,’” Angela Eilers said.

When she thinks about the possibility of Obamacare repeal, she wonders if Trump and the Republicans understand what that would really mean. “There’s a face to this law, there’s a face to people that are going to be affected by it,” Eilers said. “It’s not me, it’s not him, it’s her. She’s only 7. And through no fault of her own, why should she suffer? And she’s not the only one.”

Some Guy Built A Robot To Defeat Donald Trump’s Handshake

The white-knuckle ride that can be a handshake from President Donald Trump has met its match.

The commander-in-chief’s habit of shaking someone’s hand and pulling the hand toward him prompted Mike of the Useless Duck Company to invent a solution:

It’s a Trump robot that simulates his aggressive greeting so you can figure out how to defeat it.

Turns out a fist bump wins ― but it doesn’t look very presidential.

Britax Recalls Over 700,000 Strollers

On Thursday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a product recall for two kinds of Britax strollers.

The recall, which was issued by Britax, concerns the B-Agile and BOB Motion Strollers with click-and-go receivers. According to the CPSC, “a damaged receiver mount on the stroller can cause the car seat to disengage and fall unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard to infants in the car seat.”

The strollers in question have been available at retailers like Target and Babies “R” Us since 2011. Since that time, about 676,000 of these strollers have been sold in the U.S., with an additional 36,400 in Canada and 4,600 in Mexico, the CPSC noted.

The issue arises when the products are in travel system mode, when the car seat component is attached to the stroller frame using click and go receivers.

Britax issued the recall after receiving 33 reports of car seats unexpectedly disconnecting from the stroller component and falling to the ground. In 26 cases, these incidents resulted in injuries like scratches, bruises, cuts and bumps to the head.

The company has also received 1,337 reports of strollers that have damaged click and go receiver mounts.

Britax and the CPSC advise customers with single B-Agile and BOB Motion strollers to stop using those receiver mounts and request a free repair kit from the company. “Owners of the recalled double strollers should stop using them with car seats attached,” the CPSC recall notice states.

According to Britax, the stroller and car seats components remain safe to use separately.

For more information on this recall, visit the CPSC and Britax websites.

Liberated Territory

Liberated Territory

With their collection In Search of the Black Panther Party, Yohuru Williams and Jama Lazerow provided a broad analysis of the Black Panther Party and its legacy. In Liberated Territory, they turn their attention to local manifestations of the organization, far away from the party’s Oakland headquarters. This collection’s contributors, all historians, examine how specific party chapters and offshoots emerged, developed, and waned, as well as how the local branches related to their communities and to the national party. The histories and character of the party branches vary as widely as their locations. The Cape Verdeans of New Bedford, Massachusetts, were initially viewed as a particular challenge for the local Panthers but later became the mainstay of the Boston-area party. In the early 1970s, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina, chapter excelled at implementing the national Black Panther Party’s strategic shift from revolutionary confrontation to mainstream electoral politics. In Detroit, the Panthers were defined by a complex relationship between their above-ground activities and an underground wing dedicated to armed struggle. While the Milwaukee chapter was born out of a rising tide of black militancy, it ultimately proved more committed to promoting literacy and health care and redressing hunger than to violence. The Alabama Black Liberation Front did not have the official imprimatur of the national party, but it drew heavily on the Panthers’ ideas and organizing strategies, and its activism demonstrates the broad resonance of many of the concerns articulated by the national party: the need for jobs, for decent food and housing, for black self-determination, and for sustained opposition to police brutality against black people. Liberated Territory reveals how the Black Panther Party’s ideologies, goals, and strategies were taken up and adapted throughout the United States. Contributors: Devin Fergus, Jama Lazerow, Ahmad A. Two-Thirds Of The President’s Commission On Asian Americans And Pacific Islanders Just Resigned

Ten members of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have resigned in protest against President Donald Trump’s policies, including the chair and the vice chair.

They notified Trump in a letter on Wednesday, NBC Asian America first reported. The departing commissioners constituted about two-thirds of those remaining on the 20-member panel, since another six had already resigned on Jan. 20, Inauguration Day. Only four commissioners are left.

“Although the Commissioners’ term ends 9/30/17, we can no longer serve a President whose policies aim to create outcomes that are diametrically opposite to our principles, goals, and charge,” the Wednesday letter reads.

The resigning commissioners pointed to how the Trump administration has characterized immigrants and anybody who isn’t white and Christian.

“We object to your portrayal of immigrants, refugees, people of color and people of various faiths as untrustworthy, threatening and a drain on our nation,” the letter says.

Read the full letter below.

The departing commissioners singled out Trump’s executive order temporarily banning all refugees and all travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries. “Banning Muslims bans members of our AAPI community,” the letter says, using an acronym for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Southeast Asia is home to about one-quarter of the world’s Muslim population.

The commissioners also objected to the administration’s support for repealing the Affordable Care Act and its moves to increase immigration control and cut resources to sanctuary cities, two actions that would negatively affect the AAPI community. The letter notes that 2 out of 3 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. are immigrants.

Before any of the members resigned, they said they sent Trump a letter on Jan. 13 regarding its goals and principles, but never received a reply.

“There was no way to influence any policy,” Tung T. Nguyen, who resigned as chair on Wednesday, told AsAmNews. “Our assessment is only the viewpoints that fit the administration will be heard.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The commission was set up under President Bill Clinton’s 1999 executive order establishing the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama renewed that order.

Trump has not signaled what he will do when the remaining commissioners’ terms end in September.

Green Beret Shares How to Stay Motivated in Difficult Situations

What are the secrets to staying motivated during emotionally difficult times? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world..

Answer by Ronald Fry, Speaker, Entrepreneur, Author of Hammerhead Six, on Quora:

What are the secrets to staying motivated during emotionally difficult times? This is a great question and one that others are more qualified to answer, but I will take a shot at it. Physical, mental, and emotionally difficult times are a normal part of life and can either break us or be used to forge our character. I have had emotionally difficult times as an individual, as a son, as a husband, father, and as a soldier. These are the times when I have had to lean on my God, my family, my friends, and focus on the big picture to get through.

In the last chapters of Hammerhead Six, I share a very personal, painful situation that occurred during our mission to the Pech Valley. I caused collateral damage that affected a local family, the village, and the Afghan soldiers on my camp. It was a situation that pushed my emotions and grief to the limit. I was humbled and accountable. I reflected on the best way to navigate the situation and continued to think about the big picture and why we were there in the first place. The desire to make things right and accomplish our mission forced me to focus on a solution instead of my own emotions. I chose to face it head on regardless of the consequences. The family and I were reconciled, the villagers appreciated that we acknowledged our mistake, and the mission continued successfully.

In retrospect, the personal growth that I attained from navigating the tragedy and not losing perspective was tremendous. I feel that my character, empathy, and emotional spectrum was stretched. It has become a bitter sweet memory for myself and others that experienced it with me.

Bus Driver Builds Student With Wheelchair A Ramp After Seeing Her Struggle

When Thomas Mitchell, a mechanic and fill-in bus driver in Tennessee, saw a mother having a difficult time getting her daughter’s wheelchair down the steps of her porch and on to his bus, he knew he wanted to help.

“There was just hardly any room for her to maneuver this wheelchair,” Mitchell told his employer, Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, in a video they posted on Facebook. “It just didn’t seem right for somebody to have to struggle like that.”

He decided to build the mother, Verna DeSpain, and her 10-year-old daughter, Lydia, a ramp for free.

“I was just so shocked,” DeSpain told CBS News. “I got a call from him out of the blue.”

At first, Mitchell wasn’t quite sure how to go about building the ramp. He wasn’t sure if he could afford to do it entirely on his own, so he began reaching out to people for help. He eventually he called his local Lowe’s, and told the store manager, David Adams, about his idea.

Adams asked Mitchell for a list of materials he’d need and then donated them all.

On a Sunday in January, Mitchell knocked on DeSpain’s door with four friends, including a construction worker. In just a few hours, Lydia got the ramp she deserved.

“I’m very thankful and grateful,” DeSpain told CBS. “It’s a major blessing. This is the best year my children and I have ever had.”

She also noted to CMCSS that the ramp includes a small deck, so she intends to sit on it with Lydia when it gets warmer since her daughter’s a fan of nature.

Mitchell was just happy to make their lives a little easier.

“Everybody should be helping out their neighbor, and so many people just drive by,” he said in CMCSS’ video. “So many people comment, you know, that it’s such a great thing. I challenge them to do the same. There’s no greater feeling.”

Trump And Voting: From Bad To Worse

What could be worse than the U.S. president spreading lies and conspiracy theories about voting fraud to make himself feel better about losing the popular vote by millions? Unfortunately, that’s no longer a rhetorical question. After repeating the groundless claim that millions of people illegally voted for Hillary Clinton, Trump recently announced that his administration will launch an “investigation” designed to generate the “evidence” to support his belief. And this week White House policy adviser Stephen Miller made the rounds on Sunday talk shows spouting repeatedly debunked claims about massive voter fraud.

When pressed about the utter lack of proof for the White House’s assertions, Miller conveniently responded that “this morning, on this show, is not the venue for me to lay out all the evidence” but that “everybody” knows it.

At best, such an “investigation” by Team Trump will be a distraction from the real voting scandal of 2016: laws designed by Republicans to make it harder for targeted groups of people to vote. In reality, the so-called investigation will be used to justify even further voter suppression efforts of the kind that Republicans put in place after the Supreme Court’s conservatives gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013. It’s worth noting that that decision was cheered by newly-confirmed attorney general Jeff Sessions.

Trump’s announcement-by-tweet and Miller’s remarks this weekend have made it clear that the White House is already stacking the deck by equating messy voter rolls—such as a person whose name remains on a list after they move or die—with actual fraudulent voting. Outdated lists are a continual administrative reality; fraudulent voting is a virtually nonexistent one.

In Texas, lawmakers took the Supreme Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act as a green light to enforce a restrictive voter ID law that had been blocked under the now-dismantled provisions of the Voting Rights Act. The state argued it was necessary to prevent rampant fraud, but could produce only two cases of voter impersonation out of ten million votes. “On the other hand,” writes Emory University’s Carol Anderson, “it became clear that nearly 600,000 Texans, mainly poor, black, and Hispanic, didn’t have the newly required IDs and often faced financial and bureaucratic obstacles in obtaining them.”

A federal judge ruled in the fall of 2014 that the Texas law was discriminatory in intent as well as effect. After the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted Texas a stay of the decision, the U.S. Justice Department and civil rights activists asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg argued that the Court should protect public confidence in elections by stopping Texas from implementing “a purposefully discriminatory law, one that likely imposes an unconstitutional poll tax and risks denying the right to vote to hundreds of thousands of eligible voters.” But the Court, led by the late Justice Antonin Scalia, kept the law in place, and courts are still wrestling with it.

Even after federal judges slammed some restrictive state voting laws—an appeals court judge wrote that North Carolina’s law targeted African Americans “with almost surgical precision”—Republican legislators sought new ways to impede minority voters by closing voting locations and limiting voting hours. Investigative reporter and author Ari Berman reported that 14 states “had new voting restrictions in place for the first time in 2016,” and on Election Day “there were 868 fewer polling places in states with a long history of voting discrimination, like Arizona, Texas, and North Carolina.” It’s no surprise that many of those states had seen record African American voter participation during Barack Obama’s candidacies, and many have witnessed significant growth in their Hispanic population.

During questioning at Sessions’ confirmation hearing, Sen. Al Franken noted that state election and law enforcement officials have found “virtually no credible reports of fraud among the nearly 138 million votes that were cast” in the 2016 election, adding, “What’s truly troubling about this, I believe, these bogus claims of voter fraud, is they’re routinely used to justify voter suppression.”

Indeed, some state officials have essentially admitted the laws’ partisan purposes—and in states that are particularly important politically. In 2012, Pennsylvania’s House Leader Mike Turzai said the state’s voter ID law was “gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.” Last year, Rep. Glenn Grothman said that Wisconsin’s restrictive voter ID law would help Republicans carry the state. North Carolina’s Republican Party called a decline in African American early voting “encouraging.”

In 2014, Richard Posner, a conservative judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, called assertions about voter fraud “a mere fig leaf for efforts to disenfranchise voters.”  And noteworthy in an era in which the White House justifies its policies with “alternative facts,” Posner characterized Wisconsin officials’ justifications for voting restrictions as coming from within a “fact-free cocoon.”

The GOP is no newbie to this pernicious game, and neither is Trump. During his presidential campaign hepromoted plenty of bogus “voter fraud” conspiracy theories making the rounds in far-right circles. He has argued—without evidence, of course—that Barack Obama won his elections thanks to votes cast by non-citizens and “dead people.”

We cannot allow the Trump administration to use its “alternative facts” as another set up or excuse to further undermine our democracy by erecting more barriers to voting. It’s a lie that will be used as an excuse for even more voter suppression. If we want to preserve this democracy we, the people, must resist now.

Author Of The Shack Shares Five Tips For Dealing With Grief

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world..

Answer by Wm Paul Young, Author of New York Times Best Seller, The Shack, on Quora:

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? Thank you for the tenderness of this question. Here are a few, I hope helpful thoughts.

First, you are not alone, even though every one puts their best face forward on social media and even in human interactions, everyone knows about loss. There is a huge benefit in the element of faith, in a God who is good all the time and present to my losses.

Second, simplify. We get overwhelmed by the complexity of our losses, all the questions, and are tempted to start ‘future tripping’ – imagining a future that is dominated by loss and things never change. It is not real but seems real to us. Simplify and reduce the world to only today and stay inside the grace of this one day. Tomorrow you will get grace for whatever it actually holds and not what you have imagined.

Third, let people in. We are not designed to try and make our way alone through loss. Healing comes through community and relationship.

Fourth, be willing to let the loss go. This is a cost that some are not willing to pay. The loss becomes an identity and sometimes a prison that we begin to call a sanctuary.

Fifth, but (in light of the last suggestion), grieve and lament well. Throw the apples against the barn door with all your might and scream. Don’t suppress the presence of the wounds of loss. The way out is in and through.

Doctors May Now Be Able To Predict Autism Before Age One

Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), a team of researchers from across the country just found it may be possible to predict which babies will go on to develop autism ― all before they turn 1.

Right now the earliest a child can receive a reliable diagnosis of autism is generally thought to be age 2, at which point certain hallmark behaviors and communication problems have emerged, like an inability to string several words together or avoiding eye contact.

But the new findings ― although preliminary ― could represent a major breakthrough in terms of doctors’ ability to predict a child’s autism risk at much younger ages, even before symptoms appear.

“The field has struggled to predict autism earlier and earlier,” study researcher Dr. Joseph Piven of the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities (CIDD) at the University of North Carolina told The Huffington Post. “We’ve kind of reached a wall around 2 years of age. Prior to that, behavioral markers just don’t seem to help in detecting kids that end up with autism.”

In the study, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, researchers at autism centers across the country ran MRI scans of babies’ brains when they were 6 months old, 1 year old and then again when they turned 2.

The study included 106 babies considered to be at high-risk of developing autism, because they had an older sibling with the disorder. (Children who have older siblings with autism have roughly a 1 in 5 risk of developing the disorder; for children in the general population it’s closer to 1 in 100.) For comparison, researchers also included just over 40 babies who were considered to be at low-risk of developing autism.

The MRIs revealed that babies who eventually developed autism experienced much more rapid growth of their brain’s surface area ― essentially, the folds on the surface of the brain ― in their first year than children who did not develop the disorder.

And between ages 1 and 2, the rate of brain volume growth they experienced was also highly accelerated. That brain volume “overgrowth” was linked to the emergence of social symptoms related to autism in the children’s second year, which can include things like not engaging in pretend play and delayed speech and language.

The researchers took all of that information about changes in brain volume and surface area and put it into a computer program in order to create an algorithm that they hoped would be able to predict which babies would go on to develop autism. Ultimately, they were able to correctly identify 80 percent of high-risk babies who were later given a diagnosis of autism at 24 months.

“We view this is, particularly in this high-familial risk sample, as a very real possibility of pre-symptomatic detection,” Piven said. “So, detecting autism before it really appears. Before the consolidation of symptoms and brain deficits and at a time when the brain is most malleable, giving us the greatest chance of having an impact with early intervention.”

Current estimates suggest 1 in 68 children in the United States have been identified with autism, and while early intervention ― which at this point typically means behavioral therapy ― can be highly beneficial in managing and even erasing symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most children do not get diagnosed until closer to age 4. The new findings hold particular promise for families of children who are at high-risk for the disorder, and may have practical implications for them “in the not too distant future,” Piven argued.

The MRI images also provide some key insights into what he called the cascade of brain and behavior changes in a child’s first two years of life that result in the emergence of autism.

“There’s a developmental sequence,” he said, “and it raises the possibility that we could sort of disrupt that sequence early on.”

What Did Trump Know About Flynn and When Did He Know It?

2017-02-14-1487098513-9407138-flynntrump.jpg

If Michal Flynn informed Donald Trump about his multiple conversations with the Russian Ambassador about rolling back President Obama’s sanctions to punish Russia for interfering in the US election, it’s an impeachable offense for now-President Trump.

It would mean that while still a civilian, Trump violated the Logan Act which makes it a crime for civilians to engage in diplomatic negotiations with foreign governments in a dispute with the United States.

Either Flynn was freelancing, which seems unlikely for a matter of such gravity. Or he was representing his boss, the Donald, which makes the Donald equally guilty.

The Senate must hold hearings on Russia’s dangerous interference in American elections and diplomacy.

And they must call Michael Flynn to testify under oath about what Trump knew about Flynn’s discussions with the Russian Ambassador and when Trump knew it.

If , as is likely if Flynn doesn’t perjure himself, Trump knew what was going on, then Trump must be impeached for violating the law and putting American security in danger.

Love Takes Action: An Astrological View

For the past two years, my HuffPost blogs have focused on astrology and the myriad ways this ancient art is helpful and meaningful for life today. I was galvanized by HuffPost’s call for articles under the heading #LoveTakesAction. It is an antidote to the swirling hate around us in these fractious and difficult times and I am happy to contribute. Personally, and in my astrology practice, I am encouraging people to focus on what they can do without becoming overwhelmed by the fray, the double talk, and polarization we find all around us.

The first category HuffPost suggested is ways people take action to show and even mobilize love. Each astrological sign takes action in different ways and hewing to your own resonant talents and ability will maximize your effectiveness and keep your energy balanced.

Aries: Leads the campaign and marches. He is a natural warrior for justice.

Taurus: Raises money for organizations that matter and promotes concrete goals towards tolerance and peace.

Gemini: Disseminates real information that encourages people to think and take action.

Cancer: Nurtures those who come across their path whether in a soup kitchen, shelter, or random encounters.

Leo: Dramatizes with very public and heartfelt performances which portray the world you want to live in.

Virgo: Analyzes and categorizes information to discern the actual facts and communicates this information clearly.

2017-02-13-1487000444-7693330-zodiacsigns.jpg

Libra: Engages with tact and diplomacy in relationships, action and dialogue that try to balance love and hate while taking a middle course.

Scorpio: Transforms him or herself with radical, personal actions that serve as a model for passionate tolerance of all the forms love can take.

Sagittarius: Teaches through conversation and ideas that laughter and good humor can overcome obstacles.

Capricorn: Organizes business structures based on responsible solutions and ecological solutions for all people.

Aquarius: Creates a circle of friends and common-minded people who act together on social projects.

Pisces: Works with charitable and religious organizations that reach out with compassion to the neediest.

These suggestions are calls to love action for each sign. I hope they resonate with you and enhance your quest for a more harmonious world.

Gorgeous Valentine’s Day Video Shows A Love Parents Will Recognize Immediately

Love comes in many forms, but one of the purest examples is the love parents feel for their children.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, UNICEF released a video that pays tribute to this bond. The video features parents in Belize as they describe their hopes for their kids, the obstacles they face, and the role they play in their lives.

The emotional video is part of UNICEF’s #EarlyMomentsMatter campaign, which focuses on the ways that children’s early experiences ― like their interactions with caregivers ― influence their brain development.

“Investment in early childhood is one of the most cost effective ways of increasing the ability of all children to reach their full potential ― increasing their ability to learn in school and, later, their earning capacity as adults,” states a press release for the video.

“UNICEF is calling for governments to increase investments in early childhood, expand health and social services offered to young children, and strengthen support services for parents and caregivers.”

The early moments really do matter.

How to Embrace the Gift of Criticism

2017-02-14-1487094125-2445609-dontloseyourfire.jpg

This past October, I received the news from my literary agent that the novel I’d been laboring over and believed was finished, needed more work before she could take it out to market.

It was hard enough to accept this judgment, let alone share my disappointment with anyone–particularly my readers, in spite of the fact they’ve always remained remarkably loyal. Perhaps I was simply embarrassed to admit it. After all, I had made a few declarations that the manuscript was complete, and that I was on my way to finding a publisher.

The process of writing this book had already been somewhat painstaking, beginning back in October of 2015, when–after two years of writing–I received the advice of an established writer and editor: pitch the first 350 pages and begin again. After much contemplation, I decided to follow her suggestion.

That brings me to October 2016, a year later, when I found myself with 450 brand-new pages of completed manuscript. I sent it on to my agent, and this time she was the one to tell me that I had once again failed to reach my goal, although in an entirely different way this time around.

Initially, I couldn’t hear or process her evaluation: she felt that the novel should not be abandoned–but instead further revised. Significantly. Even though I had polished every page until my brain ached, I nevertheless needed to accept that I still had a lot of work to do. I trust my agent and value her experience, so I listened to all she had to say and resolved I would try to push myself through one last draft. This acquiescence, however, came with a steep emotional price tag.

THE NECESSARY EVIL OF CRITIQUE

Depression saturated the following days. One that was dark and deep, though I carried on with my life anyway. But, on a morning not so long afterward, as I brushed my teeth, the novel’s protagonist began to whisper in my ear. From her came a new idea. And then another. By the time five o’clock rolled around, I had scribbled down forty-one revisions I planned to make. And now, some four months after I’d submitted the manuscript to my agent originally, I am happy to say I’ve almost finished those numerous and significant changes. With great satisfaction, I can see how much I’ve improved and transformed the novel. I have to admit that, in so many ways, she was right.

I suppose the point in exposing my failures and regenerations in this writing process is to share with you the value of accepting criticism, enduring the agony of starting over, and learning to revise and adapt to changes in our plans–be they large or small–in order to achieve our dreams. Sometimes we have to let go of old ideas in order to reveal a new direction. In a novel, beginnings and endings change, as do titles, characters, points of view, scenes, and plot lines. The only constant is in knowing what you want to say–rather than knowing how you want to say it.

Going back to the starting gate in order to get to the finish line can be a harsh reality that requires both perseverance and fortitude–two qualities every writer must possess in abundance.

YOU ARE ALL THAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

My mother, the late poet, Anne Sexton, wore a medallion around her neck–which I inherited and still wear–that is inscribed with the Latin phrase: “Illegitimi Non Carborundum.” This means, in rough English (if you will excuse the expletive): “Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down.” I reminded myself of that sentiment as I soldiered on with countless revisions and rewrites. While no specific person was “grinding me down” back in October, it did feel, at the time, as if life itself was trying to squash my desire to see this through.

But now, sitting here at my computer in February, I no longer feel overwhelmed with self-doubt and defeat. Once again, I have regained a firm grasp of where my novel is going and how I’m going to get it to the finish line. And this time I’m certain that no one is going to get in my way. Not even myself.

Of course, there are no guarantees in the publishing industry. My agent may still feel uncertain about the novel despite all the hard work I’ve put into it since her last critique. Or, perhaps her response will be the opposite, and she’ll now see it as a blockbuster destined for the best-seller lists. But who’s to say my publisher will agree. The difficult work of four years could be stashed in a banker’s box, consigned to my storage shed, lined up side by side with the discarded drafts of other work and years of old tax returns. This is the risk I accept as one who makes her living as a writer.

Many of us go through similar experiences: a chef dumps a batch of curdled hollandaise sauce, and begins to whip up a new one; a surfer wipes out, and has to paddle in a hurry to catch the next wave; brothers and sisters, or parents and children, sit down together to work out a disagreement and strengthen their emotional bond.

The ability to listen to criticism, and to begin again, is a gift. And it can spark one of life’s most important challenges. If such insights should come to you–be open and take them to heart. It is absolutely possible to improve on a part of your life that is closest to your soul, be it in an intimate relationship or in the work-a-day world, so long as you allow it. Give starting over a chance, and discover the rewards you can reap.

Scientists May Have Figured Out Why Olive Oil Is So Healthy

(Reuters Health) – A traditional Mediterranean diet with added olive oil may be tied to a lower risk of heart disease at least in part because it helps maintain healthy blood flow and clear debris from arteries, a Spanish study suggests.

“A Mediterranean diet rich in virgin olive oil improves the function of high-density lipoproteins, HDL, popularly known as `good’ cholesterol,” said lead study author Dr. Alvaro Hernáez of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona.

This type of diet typically includes lots of fruits and legumes that are rich in antioxidants as well as plenty of vegetables, whole grains and olive oil. It also tends to favor lean sources of protein like chicken or fish over red meat, which contains more saturated fat.

“Our hypothesis is that these dietary antioxidants may bind to HDL particles and protect them against different kinds of attacks,” Hernáez said by email. “As HDLs are more protected, they can perform their biological functions more efficiently and, therefore, they are able to remove cholesterol from arteries or contribute to the relaxation of blood vessels for longer.”

High levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol and fats known as triglycerides are associated with an increased risk of heart and blood vessel diseases. HDL, or “good,” cholesterol is associated with a lower risk because it helps remove excess LDL from the bloodstream.

For the current study, Hernáez and colleagues examined data on 296 older adults at risk for cardiovascular disease who were randomly assigned to one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with one liter per week (about 34 fluid ounces) of extra virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with 30 grams (1 oz) of nuts a day, or a low-fat diet.

Participants were 66 years old on average, and they were asked to follow their assigned diet for one year.

Only the low-fat diet was associated with reduced LDL and total cholesterol levels, researchers report in a paper scheduled for publication in the journal Circulation.

None of the diets increased HDL levels significantly.

But blood tests and lab work showed better HDL functioning in the group assigned to the Mediterranean diet with extra olive oil.

While some previous research has linked a Mediterranean diet to weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease and some cancers, scientists haven’t conclusively proven that the diet itself is responsible, instead of other lifestyle choices made by people who eat this way.

Limitations of the current study include the fact that all three diets were relatively healthy, making it difficult to detect meaningful differences in outcomes, the authors note.

Still, the findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that HDL function may influence cardiovascular disease risk, Dr. Daniel Rader of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia writes in an accompanying editorial.

“We know the Mediterranean diet reduces risk of heart disease but still don’t know exactly why,” Rader said by email. “There is probably more than one reason, and this study suggests that one mechanism might be that the Mediterranean diet improves the function of HDL.”

Even without clear evidence explaining why the Mediterranean diet may help the heart, eating this way can still make sense, Rader added.

“For people who are interested in reducing their risk of heart disease, the Mediterranean diet is probably the best proven diet to reduce risk,” Rader said. “I think the majority of people who don’t have other major dietary concerns should look toward the Mediterranean diet as a heart healthy diet.”

Medicinal Cannibalism in Early Modern English Literature and Culture

Medicinal Cannibalism in Early Modern English Literature and Culture

The human body, traded, fragmented and ingested is at the centre of The Healing Corpse, which explores the connections between early modern literary representations of the eaten body and the medical consumption of corpses. The last decade has produced a rich collection of monographs on early modern literature and the body; however, although the literature of the age is saturated with representations of cannibalism, there has been no book-length study that brings this phenomenon together with medical practices and beliefs. Thus, while my book makes a timely contribution to the burgeoning scholarly field of early modern literature and its cultural engagements in general, its originality lies in its analysis of the medical corpse market and its ideological and figurative constructs. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and beyond, the English pharmacological arsenal included mummy (mummia), both embalmed bodies from the Middle East and the bodies of the recently dead processed according to special recipes, as well as other bodily matter such as organs, fat, bone, blood, urine, and faeces. At the same time, Protestant Reformists constructed the Catholic belief in the real body of Christ in the eucharist sacrament as a savage act of cannibalism. Within a richly detailed medical and religious framework, my book explores the medical treatment of the human corpse and its uncanny resemblances to understandings of Christ as both food and medicine, and what writers do with this. I focus on the ways in which several sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English writers read, understand and represent corpse pharmacology and its cannibalistic implications.

7 Barrier-Breaking Black Politicians We Are Rooting For

This February, HuffPost Black Voices is honoring black men and women who are paving the way to a better future for black America. We are highlighting the work of deserving individuals who are striving to make the world a more inclusive place across their respective fields.

This week, we’re featuring some of the most exceptional black men and women in politics.

From a barrier-breaking congresswoman to a record-shattering mayor, these politicians are using their smarts to strengthen the voices of black Americans.

Here are seven politicians we believe have been making noteworthy political strides.

1. U.S. Representative Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters has been representing California in the U.S. Congress for 27 years, but her candor attracted nationwide attention (and reverence) late last year ― most memorably when she walked out of a press conference on FBI Director James Comey.

Aside from her admirable honesty, Waters has worked to amplify the voices of black Californians. During her time as a California State Assemblywoman in the 1980s, she co-founded Project Build, which provides job training and placement for Los Angeles youth. As a congresswoman, Waters has played a vital role in the passing of affirmative action policies and the establishment of California’s first statewide Child Abuse Prevention Training Program

2. Stockton, California Mayor Michael Tubbs

Michael Tubbs became Stockton, California’s first black (and youngest) mayor in January, so the true extent of his political accomplishments can most notably be seen during his time as a city councilman.

In that role, Tubbs devoted himself to the plights of the city’s children by helping to develop the Boys and Men of Color Alliance and a Black Community Crusade for Children in Stockton. With such a track record, and that he received an endorsement from former President Barack Obama himself during his mayoral bid, we can’t to see what Tubbs will accomplish next.

3. Minnesota State Representative Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar made history by becoming the nation’s first Somali-American female legislator when she was elected to Minnesota’s House of Representatives in November 2016.

Omar, who came to the U.S. when she was 12 years old after spending four years in a Kenyan refugee camp, was a director of policy for the Women Organizing Women Network prior to entering her role as a Minnesota congresswoman.

4. U.S. Senator Cory Booker

U.S. Senator Cory Booker is one of only 10 black Americans to have ever served in the Senate. The former Newark, New Jersey mayor has been a staunch advocate of criminal justice reform and boldly testified against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions during his confirmation hearing in January.

Although widely scrutinized for some of his political decisions, media outlets have declared Booker a presidential potential for 2020, though Booker told CNN a presidential campaign isn’t on his agenda.

5. U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke

U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke established the Congressional Caucus on Multicultural Media and also co-founded the Black Women and Girls Caucus.

The Brooklyn native’s Twitter page is not only demonstrative of her support for the Black Lives Matter and Say Her Name movements, but her plans to mobilize resistance against the Trump administration. She even pledged to keep Brooklyn a “sanctuary city” during her swearing-in ceremony in January.

6. Michigan State Representative Jewell Jones

Jewell Jones became the youngest person to serve on Inkster, Michigan’s city council in 2015 at just 20 years old. Now, after a successful congressional bid in in the 2016 election, Jones, who joined ROTC when he began attending University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2013, is the youngest person to serve in Michigan’s House of Representatives

7. Georgia State Representative Park Cannon

When former Georgia state representative Simone Bell knew she’d be leaving her congressional seat for another position, she called Atlanta native Park Cannon.

At just 24 years old, Cannon became Georgia’s youngest legislator last February. One of three openly queer women to serve in the state’s legislature, Cannon wants to use her platform to prevent LGBT discrimination in addition to helping to secure better jobs and expand Medicaid.

‘Kindhearted Cards’ Teach Kids About Love And Acceptance For Valentine’s Day

A new series of uplifting cards is spreading a message of love and kindness in honor of Valentine’s Day.

Kindhearted Cards is the brainchild of Emily Barker, a creative advertising professional. Barker collaborated with some designer and teacher friends to create cards that espouse tolerance and celebrate differences.

“I think kindness is key, now more than ever,” Barker told The Huffington Post. “From ‘build the wall’ chants in the cafeteria to the countless off-camera acts of intolerance, it feels like an especially tough time for kids who may feel different from others. We all know voices of hate can be extremely loud, so I wanted to create a platform that amplifies messages of love and acceptance in time for Valentine’s Day.”

Parents and teachers can log onto the Kindhearted Cards website to print out the free cards and give them to children to sign and distribute to their classmates on February 14. The site also offers resources for parents to guide conversations with their kids about the value of differences and lesson plans that teachers can use to accompany the cards.

Kindhearted Cards has been successfully kid-tested, said Barker, who works for HuffPost’s parent company AOL.

“A whole school did a pre-Valentine’s Day Week of Kindness and featured the cards,” she explained. “They really resonated with kids and encouraged them to appreciate what makes each of their classmates unique. I’ve also heard from a number of parents who have already printed the cards out for their kids to give out on Valentine’s Day.”

Although Barker does not have children, she said she has many young cousins and believes in the promise of kids to stand up for love and acceptance in the future. And she wants Kindhearted Cards to help inform their relationships with each other.

“I hope that kids have fun passing out these cute cards, and that there’s a lasting impact on continuing to celebrate diversity of all kinds,” Barker said. “I hope the cards provide more of an understanding of differences, and help kids walk away with a greater appreciation of what makes each of us unique.”

The Department Of Education Misspells Apology For Misspelling W.E.B. Du Bois’ Name

Maybe the Department of Education should have double-checked the spelling of W.E.B. Du Bois’ name with Frederick Douglass before tweeting about him.

In a tweet that went out Sunday morning, the agency attributed a quote from famous civil rights activist Du Bois to “W.E.B. DeBois.”

The internet was quick to point out how horrifying it is that the Department of Education ― now run by Betsy DeVos, an education activist who critics fear could dismantle the public education system ― would misspell the name of a civil rights leader, especially during Black History Month.

The NAACP clapped back with an apt Du Bois quote, while others roasted the department for its carelessness.

The department issued a correction three hours later ― with another typo. That correction tweet was swiftly deleted and replaced, this time with the correct spelling of “apologies,” but we saved a screenshot of the original:

The misspelling of Du Bois’ name comes just over a week after President Donald Trump described abolitionist Douglass as “an example of somebody who has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice,” leaving everyone wondering if Trump has any idea who Douglass was or that he had died in 1895.

And DeVos is no grammar purist, if her social media posts are any indication:

Is It Angels Who Protect Social Entrepreneurs? Because Nobody Else Does…..

“Four corners to my bed

Four Angels round my head

One to watch, one to pray,

And two to take all fears away!”

When I was a child I would recite this rhyme before going to bed. Those were the days when we would sleep beneath the stars. Sometimes clouds and trees would take menacing shapes in the dark. I would shut my eyes tightly and think of the Angels protecting me and be comforted and drift into sleep.

Now it seems the Angels are back again.

Life was tough indeed when I took a conscious decision to establish Operation ASHA. My aim was clear- that of providing health solutions to the poorest of the poor. Suddenly life changed. From a successful doctor in an upscale fancy private hospital I became a foot soldier trudging long miles in shanty towns and villages. My appearance changed. I went from stiletto heels to sturdy walking shoes. I started looking unkempt and shabby, initially a deliberately cultivated look to be accepted by those whom I serve, and later a natural consequence of the kind of work I was doing.

People around me changed too. Many laughed. All were contemptuous. Most couldn’t understand why I would throw away a good income to start an NGO. Others accused me of exactly the opposite thing- of being desperate to make easy money, for isn’t that the reason why one starts an NGO in the first place? With two conflicting accusations being hurled at me at the same time, I wouldn’t know whether I was standing on my head or my heels.

And as for the uncertainty! The less I write about it the better. Words are not enough to describe the trials and tribulations I went through. Starting a social venture is bad enough, starting it without a sound financial plan to ensure sustainability is the height of absurdity. And putting your own savings in a social enterprise is the biggest financial folly one could ever commit. I thought my savings would last 5 years. They finished in one, like water trickling from a hole in a bucket. I had plunged headlong into choppy waters without the fear of drowning. Each day I managed to stay afloat was a miracle.

When you are a social entrepreneur, life is all about extremes. You swing from one end on the pendulum to the other. From the depths of despair you go to such euphoria that you are walking with your head in the clouds. There are days when everything goes wrong. You get sleepless nights wondering where the next round of funding is coming from, your best guy has been offered twice the salary by a rival foundation, and some government officer somewhere has absolutely refused to let you work in his fiefdom. Other days- you wake up and find yourself on top of the world for someone somewhere has recognised your work and your worth. One day you are accused of being a crook and a thief, next day, blasphemously, you are feted by the media as the next Mother Teresa. In 2014, the Schwab Foundation and the World Economic Forum selected me as Social Entrepreneur of the Year. I found myself rubbing shoulders with the Who’s Who of society and the hoi-polloi at Davos. I haven’t looked back since then.

But at all times there is an all-pervading undercurrent of anxiety. Social entrepreneurs thrive on the adrenalin rush created by the see-saw that is life. You may be fully sustainable, yet you can’t get over the feeling that you are like the wandering mendicants of yesteryears with a staff in one hand and a begging bowl in the other.

In this topsy-turvy world, few things happen to keep you going. Patients recover. Results are there for you to see. Children get back to school. Treated TB patients get back their jobs, and there’s money for food and to spare. Miraculously, funds start coming in time. Those that scoffed at you and laughed with derision give tolerant smiles. There’s an occasional pat on the back, a kind word. You go to bed happy and contented and you sleep well, for the Angels are back and hovering over you. And you know they are there for you and will protect you as they have done since childhood. For nobody else will.

Love Needs To Be Remembered, Restored and Renewed

It’s that time of the year and love is in the air! Everywhere we see red hearts beaming from cards and boxes of chocolates, while a dozen roses just doesn’t have quite the right impact if they are yellow.

Every day we can read about the importance of love, how to get more of it, how to be the best at it, how to make it work, how to keep it alive, how to let go if it doesn’t work, and how to trust it and start the process all over again. Love appears to be the most important topic on our minds (along with elections, immigrants and teenage acne, to name but a few).

Learning to open the heart, to listen to, respect and trust what we feel, is one of life’s most powerful teachings. For the heart is more than just the center of love, it is also the center of our being, the place we point to when we talk about ourselves. When we say, “you have touched my heart” we are really saying “you have touched the deepest part of my being.”

We don’t have to go in search of love, or fear giving away so much that we have none left. We can never lose love; we can only lose sight of it. Love could not happen if it was not already an integral part of who we are. How can we lose what is our nature? How can we be left with nothing when love is the source of all life?

However, love rarely flows smoothly. We all experience conflicts, hurt or loss, and if the pain is too big to deal with we lock it away inside. This serves to lock us out of our heart. And when we become isolated from love we become mistrustful, uncaring, shallow, hateful, prejudiced and fearful.

Fear closes the heart so we can’t feel love, as when we close our arms and pull back in defense. Love comes from the open heart, when we open our arms wide to embrace another.

All this means that love needs to be remembered, restored and renewed. We remember by holding love close and feeling its presence; we restore those places where love has been forgotten or ignored; and we renew it by being aware of love in every moment.

The Indian government invited us to speak at a yoga conference being held in Pondicherry, in southern India.
When it was Ed’s turn to speak he talked about the beauty and awesome power of unconditional love. A man in the audience raised his hand.
“Please sir,” he said. “What is this love that you speak of? How do I get this love? Where can I find it?”
Ed replied: “You awake in love, you bathe in love, you eat in love, you walk in love, and you live in love. Love is within you; it is your true nature; it is who you really are.”
“Oh sir,” the man said, “You have all the right answers!”

Since Consumers’ Research Magazine’s inception in 1928, readers have been given reliable and useful information on food issues. Characteristically, much of the information had been provided far in advance of official concern or public awareness. Thus, you will find a discussion of E. coli 0157:H7 printed in May 1991 – several years prior to the publicized incident in a fast food restaurant that affected many children. Information on the newly banned pesticide Alar was printed in November 1985, and the possible association between carrageenan and ulcerative colitis appeared as early as May 1972. These, and many other topics included in this anthology, appeared years prior to official recognition that these food issues posed public health problems. Every article included in this book can enlighten you as a consumer, in order to make intelligent choices in a bewildering marketplace.

Mexico Warns Its People About ‘New Reality’ In The United States

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an eerie statement on Thursday, warning its citizens of the “new reality” they face in the United States.

The statement was sparked by the deportation of Arizona woman Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos, a working mother of two children who are U.S. citizens. Rayos came to the U.S. from Mexico at age 14 and had been in the country for more than 20 years.

She was swept up in a 2009 workplace raid and convicted of a felony charge of using a false Social Security number, but was able to continue living in the U.S. for years, periodically checking in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. That changed Wednesday, when ICE agents detained and subsequently deported her, sparking protests in her community.

“The case of Mrs. Garcia de Rayos illustrates the new reality that the Mexican community faces in the United States due to the more severe application of immigration control measures,” the ministry’s statement reads, as translated by NPR. “For this reason, the entire Mexican community should take precautions and keep in touch with the nearest consulate, to obtain the necessary help to face this kind of situation.”

The government’s statement preceded reports of ICE raids in at least six states, resulting in the arrests of hundreds of undocumented immigrants this week.

The ministry also instructed Mexicans to “familiarize” themselves with situations they may face in the U.S., and advised that Mexican consulates are available to provide assistance.

Some immigrant advocates and legal experts believe that the deportation of Rayos and others indicates that ICE is already changing its deportation policies under President Donald Trump.

In January, Trump issued an executive order that, among other things, laid out broad and sometimes contradictory guidelines for which immigrants should be considered priorities for deportation. While the White House has said immigration efforts will focus on criminal offenders, his executive order as written could be interpreted to include nearly all undocumented immigrants as deportation priorities.

Seven Steps to Completely Turn Your Life Around This Year

How can I change my life completely in the next year or two? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Max Lukominskyi, CMO at Sliceplanner, on Quora:

Changing your life completely is a huge step that requires a major effort. Nonetheless, the result is worth the struggle. Commit to this 7-step challenge and you will arrive at the desired destination already next year:

Begin With The End In Mind. While making a decision to commit to something, take a moment to get it crystal clear what change you would like to experience and what kind of person you would like to become within the next year or two. Imagine how you achieve your goal and try to design a blueprint of how you are going to move towards your desired destination. Then you will know exactly what steps to take.

Declutter Your Life. Slow down and take some time to simplify your life. Get rid of the things that have always been holding you back. Get rid of the stuff that associates with the life you would like to change. Stop comparing yourself with others and prioritize your goals. Clear your mind from the unnecessary thoughts and create more space in your life for new pure energy and massive wins.

Master Your Mindset. Embrace the truth: Everything worth doing is going to be neither easy nor fast. It holds true for this challenge as well. Therefore, be ready to face tough obstacles and deal with the unexpected issues. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean you cannot succeed. It only means you need to be ready. Stop doubting your strengths. Make the goal to change your life completely your priority. Become obsessed. And get down to work.

Start Small. Your life is a set of little seemingly innocuous decisions, choices and actions. The repeated ones constitute your daily habits. These are the ones that eventually shape your life and define your level of productivity and success. Start small and strive to develop a good habit attitude by breaking bad habits and developing only routines that are the perfect fit for the life you would like to live.

Grow 0.1% A Day. Whatever you want to achieve, try to approach that goal with the constant pace: 0.1% a day. Since your personal growth has a compounding effect, these seemingly trivial steps will eventually allow you to grow 37.78% a year and become multiple times better than you are now already in two years. Commit to continuous and consistent growth. Do the things that take you closer to your aspirations every single day.

Avoid Negative People. Your environment is crucial. The chances are that you are not likely to experience any change if you stay in the stagnant and not challenging environment. You need to surround yourself with people who are better, smarter, stronger and faster. Choose your environment wisely and avoid negative people who are always too pessimistic and skeptical towards your goals. Get around greatness and make sure the people who you hang out with are supportive and inspiring.

Leave Your Comfort Zone. No change will come if your stay within your area of ease and convenience. All the opportunities for growth are far beyond your comfort zone. Learn to leave it on the consistent basis and do the things that scare you. Very soon you will find out that the life in your discomfort zone is not that frightening but rather full of new earlier unfamiliar, interesting and exciting things that indeed take you closer to your desired aspirations. Expand your comfort zone – change your life.

Spine Concepts, Low Back Pain

Acute low back pain or low back pain with sciatica radiating to the lower leg and to the foot (Figure 1). They are initially treated conservatively for at least six weeks by physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication and limited activity (as guided by the pain).

2017-02-10-1486746258-8631180-backpain1.PNG

Doctors should treat the condition conservatively. Even if there is a large disc herniation on the MRI, unless the disc is central or causing a neurological deficit, they need wait at least six weeks before beginning a more aggressive treatment. 90% of patients will have symptoms that resolve in one month. Smoking, depression and vibrations will increase the incidence of low back pain (Figure 2).

2017-02-10-1486746280-879733-backpain2.PNG

Intradiscal pressure (IDP) will change depending on the position (Figure 3). The lowest pressure is measured while the patient is lying supine. The highest IDP is measured while the patient is sitting, leaning forward and holding weight.

2017-02-10-1486746301-5848022-backpain3.PNG

If the patient is experiencing low back pain and there is a history of cancer, the doctor will need to get an x-ray and MRI, especially if the pain occurs during rest and at night (Figure 4)! In case of a renal tumor, the physician will probably need to do arteriography and embolization of the spinal lesion.

2017-02-10-1486746323-6536294-backpain4.PNG

The spine is a common location for metastatic tumors. Metastases occur in the vertebral body and go to the pedicle. Loss of about 30%-40% of the bone mass must occur before the physician can detect the lesion on an x-ray. The loss of the pedicle bone will result in a “wink sign” (Figure 5).

2017-02-10-1486746348-7761266-backpain5.PNG

What if the patient has an infection?
An infection will occur within the intervertebral disc space (Figure 6). The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels will be elevated. Only 50% of the cases will have a fever, and less than 50% of cases will have an elevated white blood cell (WBC) count. The physician will need to get a blood culture (this is positive in about 24% of the cases). They will also need to get an MRI and administer antibiotics as guided by the biopsy, culture and sensitivity.

2017-02-10-1486746373-2268445-backpain6.PNG

If the patient has an epidural abscess, surgery will be performed, especially if there is deterioration of the neurological function (Figure 7). If there is an infection post-surgery, it may be diagnosed with a higher C-reactive protein (CRP).

2017-02-10-1486746394-6798675-backpain7.PNG

Osteoporotic bone is at risk of fracture, beginning with the wrist, the spine and followed by the hip (Figure 8). So, if the patient has an osteoporotic spine, it will need to be treated before it leads to a hip fracture later on. One fracture of the spine will lead to multiple spine fractures. After one year of treatment with medication, the incidence of a vertebral fracture is decreased by 60%. After two years, the incidence of a vertebral fracture is decreased by 40%.

2017-02-10-1486746418-9128834-backpain8.PNG

In general, when the patient has low back pain, it is necessary to treat the patient conservatively. The doctor does not need to get x-rays in the first 4-6 weeks unless there are “red flags” including: the patient is older, the patient has a metastatic tumor or history of cancer, infection is suspected, the patient has trauma or there is an osteoporotic fracture possibly due to steroid use.

The physician may see an x-ray that looks like ankylosing spondylitis (Figure 9). They will need to check the SI joint because ankylosing spondylitis begins at the SI joint. The may get HLA-B27 and will find that there are marginal syndesmophytes with diffuse ossification of the disc space without large osteophyte formation. Ankylosing spondylitis is different from Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH), which occurs in diabetics, in this case the physician will get an HbA1c. Syndesmophytes are non-marginal and have larger osteophytes. It is the DISH which will have flowing ossification along the anterolateral aspect of at least four continuous vertebra. DISH is not ankylosing spondylitis (Figure 10)!

2017-02-10-1486746442-2945714-backpain9.PNG

2017-02-10-1486746467-7529135-backpain10.PNG

An MRI of the spine will be obtained at a certain point, however, x-rays may be needed first. MRI results may be a problem! There are abnormal MRIs in asymptomatic patients (these are false positives). Approximately 35% of these false positives are seen in patients less than 40 years of age. 90% of positive MRIs in asymptomatic patients occur in patients over 60 years of age.

The second issue is the MRIs with gadolinium dye. Gadolinium will differentiate a disc from a scar. Both granulation tissue and the recurrent disc could look alike on a routine MRI. There will be contrast enhancement when there is granulation tissue because it is vascular. However, when there is a disc herniation, the dye will not enhance because the disc is a dead piece of tissue (avascular). When the doctor tries to differentiate between a recurrent disc and a scar, they will inject the dye and get the MRI. If there is a vascular enhancement, then it is granulation tissue and the patient will not need surgical intervention. If there is no enhancement, then it is a recurrent disc and it is avascular, which is why it does not enhance. If the recurrent disc is causing a lot of pain or symptoms to the patient, then the physician may need to discuss a repeated surgery with this patient.

Exxon Adviser Resigns Over Oil Giant’s ‘Targeted Attacks’ On NGOs

A research scholar at New York University has resigned from Exxon Mobil Corp.’s External Citizenship Advisory Panel, citing what she calls the oil giant’s “targeted attacks” on environmental groups under former CEO Rex Tillerson’s watch.

In a letter this week to Exxon Mobil Foundation president Ben Soraci, Sarah Labowitz expressed her disgust with the company’s continued assault on organizations investigating whether Exxon covered up the risks of climate change.

Labowitz, a co-founder and co-director of New York University’s Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, told The Huffington Post that she has studied many companies facing serious public criticism, often in her field of human rights. For the most part, she said, “they don’t shoot the messenger ― which is what Exxon is doing.”

As Labowitz put it in her resignation letter to Soraci, “Few respond with the kind of vehemence and aggressive attack strategy that Exxon has executed over the last year.”

Exxon’s current strain of legal trouble dates back to November 2015, when New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman subpoenaed the oil giant to obtain documents related to allegations that it had lied to the public and its investors about the risks of climate change. In March, a coalition of state attorneys general, including Maura Healey of Massachusetts, pledged to crack down on corporate climate fraud, after InsideClimate News and the Los Angeles Times reported that Exxon executives were aware of the climate risks associated with carbon dioxide emissions but had funded research to cover up those risks and block solutions.

In June, Exxon hit back, filing a lawsuit against Healey in the company’s home state of Texas in an effort to bar a civil investigative demand from her office. Shortly thereafter, Labowitz told HuffPost, the company began advancing a conspiracy argument that she finds particularly troubling.

In October, Exxon filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Fort Worth, Texas, that sought to invalidate Schneiderman’s subpoena, arguing the investigations by the New York and Massachusetts AGs were “biased attempts to further a political agenda for financial gain.” The company claimed that “revelations from third-party disclosures about secret and deliberately concealed collaboration with anti-oil and gas activists and a private law firm” had shown the AGs were “incapable of impartial investigations” and were “attempting to silence political opponents.”

Exxon Mobil then turned its attention to non-governmental organizations, including the Union of Concerned Scientists, warning them in a series of letters not to destroy or delete communications related to their probes of Exxon ― including communications with the press. The move hinted at future subpoenas

At that time, a company spokesman told HuffPost that Exxon had been left with no choice but to “vigorously defend” itself. To show what Exxon was up against, the spokesman shared a link to a draft agenda for a January meeting of environmental group leaders at the Rockefeller Family Fund. First covered by The Wall Street Journal in April and later published at The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative site, the letter appears to list several of the meeting participants’ common goals, including “to establish in the public’s mind that Exxon is a corrupt institution that has pushed humanity (and all creation) toward climate chaos and grave harm.”

Created in 2009, Exxon Mobil’s External Citizenship Advisory Panel consists of five independent experts and is tasked with reviewing the company’s corporate citizenship activities, including its effects on human rights and the environment.

Labowitz, who had served on the panel since 2014, told HuffPost that she began to notice a pattern. She raised her concerns, both privately and during formal advisory meetings, and encouraged company leaders to find alternative approaches.

Then last week, Exxon “doubled down,” as Labowitz put it. In court papers filed Feb. 1, Exxon wrote that the Massachusetts and New York AGs were “at the forefront of a conspiracy to violate ExxonMobil’s constitutional rights,” as E&E News reported.

“I think that’s the wrong way to go,” Labowitz said. “I don’t think it’s helpful to them and I don’t think it’s helpful to society at large.”

In her scathing resignation letter, Labowitz argues that Exxon Mobil’s approach undermines democratic principles. “I am disappointed that instead of examining its own record and seeking to restore a respected place for itself in the public debate, Exxon has chosen to turn up the temperature on civil society groups,” the letter reads.

Exxon spokesman Alan Jeffers told HuffPost that while the company regrets Labowitz’s decision to resign, it takes issue with some of her conclusions.

“We have never characterized any action by civil society representatives as illegal,” he said in an email. “What we have done is defend the company, on behalf of all shareholders, from politically motivated investigations that are biased, in bad faith and without legal merit.”

“We did not start this,” Jeffers went on, “but will vigorously defend ourselves against false allegations and mischaracterizations of our climate research and investor communications.”

Labowitz’s departure comes just days after Tillerson, the former Exxon head, took over as President Donald Trump’s secretary of state. During his confirmation process, Tillerson faced serious questions about his ties to Russia and the company’s decades-long, well-documented climate change cover-up. He refused to discuss what the company knew about climate change and when it knew it, saying, “Since I’m no longer with Exxon Mobil, I can’t speak on their behalf.”

Kathy Mulvey, climate accountability campaign manager at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said that Labowitz’s departure “speaks volumes” about the kind of corporate citizen Exxon is.

“All companies try to protect themselves, but Exxon’s recent attacks have crossed a line,” Mulvey said in a statement. “Going after nonprofits and interfering with independent state investigations shows that ExxonMobil will stop at nothing to protect its bottom line. Ms. Labowitz took a bold stand against ExxonMobil’s climate deception and bullying.”

Mulvey urged other panel members to likewise call out the company’s behavior.

Ultimately, Labowitz says it will be important for Exxon to restore itself as a credible participant in the climate change discussion. If it continues down its current path, Labowitz believes it will do so at its own peril.

“I hope they find a way out of this. I don’t think that this kind of attack strategy is the way forward,” she said. “What happens if they win in arguing this is an illegal conspiracy? I think that it erodes their credibility in a way that is so unhelpful to them, and to the broader debate about the response to climate change.”

Is America Still A Nation of Immigrants?

The letter below was originally written after 9/11 as an open letter to a relative of mine who had worries about migrating to America. But it feels that it is especially relevant to our time. So here it is, revised.

Dear Cousin,

What is it like to be an immigrant in America these days? Is it still worth coming, you ask, and is the American dream still possible?

Your questions gave me pause. Who from Vietnam, after all, would have thought to ask them a few years back? Didn’t the American dream, or rather the dream of coming to America, cause the movement of millions in our homeland, and stir the soul of many millions more? It breaks my heart then to hear that you might not come. It is to me the worst news yet about my adopted country.

Yet it’s undeniable. The nation of immigrants is turning its back on immigrants once more. The immigrant’s hold on American soil has become increasingly tenuous. Even citizens now face a barrage of hate speech and many are being attacked in a rising wave of hate crimes. In schools, white students scream “build the wall” at their classmates who are Mexicans or Muslims.

“Build the wall” has become a racist mantra chanted by many around the country against non-whites.

2017-02-08-1486590726-9013476-gop2016trumpjpeg950be.jpg

Cousin, have you heard the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine? When it stops singing, it means the oxygen has run out, providing a warning to all.

In America, and in the context of a free and open society, often the immigrant is that canary. In economic down times he is often the first to be blamed. And amid the ongoing US war against terrorism, he is fast becoming a scapegoat.

After the 2016 election that ushered in Donald Trump as President of the United States, many hate-crime related incidents occurred in which the President’s name was invoked by the perpetrators, as if to sanction the violence and verbal abuse.

In the name of protection and security, immigrants’ rights are being eroded as I write. Foreign students and workers tremble. I’ve seen an old South Asian man whose hands shook at the airport when he gave his green card to immigration officers, fearing sudden arrest and deportation. I know an undocumented college student at Berkeley — he was brought to the US when he was three years old — who now fakes his address on any application for fear of being deported.

2017-02-08-1486590339-421738-H05_Racist_Trump_USA.jpg

‘I have my hopes’

Yet I have my hopes. Americans rallied at airports in protest when Trump signed an executive order to keep certain groups of people out of the country, including green card holders. The protest against the new tyranny is strong and ongoing. I have hope to that the damage Trump is creating both at home and abroad can be mitigated by his growing unpopularity. After all, he is dismantling international institutions that have been in place since World War II, potentially returning the world to a state of competing nations with hard borders, high tariffs, trade wars, and gun boat diplomacy, turning against the forces of globalization.

And worse, in turning against America’s liberal values and our identity as a nation of immigrant, we are losing our strength in diversity.

Over the years I find it beneficial to look at this country through two different lenses: America versus the United States. The United States is a sovereign nation with permanent interests that is currently waging a war on terrorism. And it will trample upon innocents in its path, be it at home or abroad, if need be, in order to win it. In the process, the newcomer to this country, one without a voice and resources, often becomes collateral damage.

America, on the other hand, has everything you and I ever dreamed of: transparency, freedom, democracy, opportunity, due process, fair play and the promise of progress. America is where you work hard and earn respect.

The two versions exist in a kind of complex dance. In good times, America leads. In bad times, America is forgotten and the United States dances alone. These days, I fear that to be a patriotic immigrant is to love the ideals of America despite what the United States is doing in the name of security.

While I understand the logic of permanent interests, if America is destroyed in the process, then what is the use? And as far as I am concerned the only good patriotism is a civilized one. Blind patriotism always leads to bloody ends. To be patriotic is to dare ask questions. Must rights be abused in the name of security? Is it truly the country’s interest to demonize its minorities and its newcomers?

Dear cousin, I hope I haven’t completely frightened you, but the situation requires honesty. To reach American shores these days is a much more difficult undertaking, with fewer ready-made promises on the horizon.

I still want you to make this difficult journey, but you must be prepared for the challenges ahead. And I’ll let you in on a secret about this American dream you spoke so fondly of: it is you who must renew it. Without you, who dream the American dream, the country is in danger of becoming old. Without your energy, we would weaken. Even if we don’t know it yet, we all desperately need to be reborn through your eyes.

So, is the American Dream still alive? No, cousin, not really. Not without you at the table. Not without you prospering. Not without you.

Intense Fear Of Guilt May Be At The Heart Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Nobody likes to feel guilt. But when a fear of doing harm to others and feeling guilty as a result gets too severe, it can become pathological.

Excessive fear of guilt can lead a person down the road to developing obsessive-compulsive disorder. An intriguing new theory suggests that in certain cases, an extreme sensitivity to the emotion may be an operative factor in a person’s vulnerability to OCD.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder affects roughly 2 percent of the population. People with OCD get caught in a cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts, performing ritualistic behaviors in an attempt to ease the distress. These unwanted thoughts often revolve around a fear of losing control, harming others, being exposed to germs or contamination, or having inappropriate sexual desires. The individual then looks to compulsive behaviors ― like repeatedly reciting a mantra, counting or washing one’s hands ― to rid oneself of the disturbing thoughts.

A study by Italian researchers published last month in the journal Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy suggests that individuals with OCD may perceive guilt to be more threatening than most people do, leading them to find it intolerable. Any thought or impulse that might inspire guilt, then, is met with extreme anxiety and with attempts to “cleanse” oneself of the mental intrusion.

There are mixed research findings about whether being prone to guilt puts you at a higher risk for developing OCD, but the new study suggests that it’s being highly sensitive to guilt, rather than simply being guilt-prone, that’s important.

“Most of the previous studies focused on guilt-proneness and failed to support its specific role in OCD,” Dr. Gabriele Melli, the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post. “In our opinion, OCD patients are not more prone to guilt than other people but they fear feelings of guilt, and many rituals and avoidance behaviors are motivated by the need to avoid this emotion in the future.”

Melli also suggests that fear of guilt is involved in OCD the way fear of fear is related to panic disorders.

The Fear of Guilt

For the study, researchers first developed a new scale to measure guilt sensitivity. The test featured 20 statements ― including “Guilt is one of the most intolerable feelings” and “The idea of feeling guilty because I was careless makes me very anxious” ― for which participants could rank their level of agreement.

Then, 500 adults were asked to complete the guilt sensitivity test and also fill out a questionnaire measuring their tendency to experience guilt and tests of OCD, anxiety and depression. The results suggest that guilt sensitivity is a distinctly different trait from being prone to guilt and is more closely linked to OCD symptoms than to depression or anxiety.

In a second experiment, 61 people with OCD and 47 with other anxiety disorders completed the new guilt sensitivity test as well as tests of anxiety and depression. The results showed that guilt sensitivity was highly correlated with checking-related OCD behaviors ― things like repeatedly making sure that the door is locked or the stove is turned off. Guilt sensitivity was especially high in individuals for whom ritualistic checking is a main OCD symptom. These behaviors may be part of a strategy for avoiding potential guilt, according to the study’s authors.

“Guilt sensitivity may cause individuals to be vigilant and sensitive to ways in which actions or inactions could potentially cause harm, performing checking compulsions in order to avoid, prevent, or neutralize the feared feeling of guilt,” Melli said. “An individual who has high guilt sensitivity may feel driven to checking actions because he or she is not able to take the risk of being responsible for harm, injury or bad luck.”

Somewhat related, studies have also shown “fear of self” to be a major predictor of OCD symptoms. It’s possible that a distrust of oneself ― which could play out as a fear that deep down, you are dangerous and potentially harmful to others ― and the extreme fear of guilt may work hand-in-hand to create the conditions for OCD to take root.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is currently the most effective treatment for OCD. Melli suggests that therapists with patients who may have high guilt sensitivity should help them focus on strategies for challenging their feelings of excessive responsibility to others and cultivating a greater acceptance of guilt.

“When checking rituals are primarily involved,” he said, “cognitive behavioral therapists should target also beliefs concerning the intolerability and dangerousness of experiencing guilt.”

Emmett Till’s Family Wants His Murder Case Reopened

It took more than six decades for the lie that led to Emmett Till’s lynching to be exposed. Now, Till’s family is calling for his case to be reopened.

Till, 14, was abducted by two white men in 1955 after 21-year-old Carolyn Donham accused him of making sexual advances at her. Donham’s first husband, J.W. Milam, and his half-brother, Roy Bryant, beat, shot and mutilated Till’s body. He was later found weighted down with a cotton gin fan in the Tallahatchie River.

Milam and and Bryant stood trial for Till’s murder. During the trial, Donham claimed that Till made sexual advances and grabbed her hand. The suspects were acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury. Just months later, the duo admitted to killing Till in a paid interview for Look magazine.

In January, The Blood of Emmett Till was published and revealed that Donham committed perjury.

In a 2008 interview for that book, by Timothy B. Tyson,  Donham admitted that she lied about Till making advances and grabbing her.

“Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him,” she told Tyson.

Till was with his cousin, Wheeeler Parker, in 1955 when they encountered Donham. Parker told the AP that Till did “for sure” whistle at 21-year-old Donham, but he never grabbed or threatened her.

Deborah Watts, also Till’s cousin, said she believes new information could be found if the case is reopened. “We know that she has admitted that she lied, and we know that is part of the reason Emmett is no longer with us,” Watts told the AP. “If there is any chance to reopen the case, I hope they will take this opportunity to do it now.”

During the trial, Till’s great-uncle, Moses Wright, said that he saw two men hold the 14-year-old at gunpoint and take him to a third person inside a parked car. Milam and Bryant, now dead, were the only two charged for the murder. Watts said that reopening the investigation could identify the third person.

“However that information is acquired, it’s necessary,” she said.

Can a dying patient be a healthy person?

By Richard Gunderman, Indiana University and James W Lynch, University of Florida

The news was bad. Mimi, a woman in her early 80s, had been undergoing treatment for lymphoma. Her husband was being treated for bladder cancer. Recently, she developed chest pain, and a biopsy showed that she had developed a secondary tumor of the pleura, the space around one of her lungs. Her oncology team’s mission was to share this bad news.

Mimi’s case was far from unique. Each year in the U.S., over 1.6 million patients receive hospice care, a number that has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. What made Mimi’s case remarkable was not the grimness of her prognosis but her reaction to it.

When the members of the team walked into Mimi’s hospital room, she was lying in bed holding hands with her husband, who was perched beside her on his motorized wheelchair. The attending oncologist gulped, took a deep breath, and began to break the news as gently as he could. Expecting to meet a flood of tears, he finished by expressing how sorry he was.

To the team’s surprise, however, no tears flowed. Instead Mimi looked over at her husband with a broad smile and said, “Do you know what day this is?” Somewhat perplexed, the oncologist had to admit that he did not. “Today is very is special,” said Mimi, “because it was 60 years ago this very day that my Jim and I were married.”

The team members reacted to Mimi with astonishment. How could an elderly woman with an ailing husband who had just been told that she had a second, lethal cancer respond with a smile? Compounding the team’s amazement, she then went on to share how grateful she felt for the life she and her husband had shared.

Mimi thanked the attending oncologist and the members of the team for their care, remarking how difficult it must be to deliver bad news to very sick patients. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Mimi was expressing sympathy for the people caring for her, exhibiting a remarkable generosity of spirit in the face of a grim disease.

The members of the team walked out of Mimi’s room shaking their heads in amazement. Once they reached the hallway, the attending physician turned and addressed the group: “Mimi isn’t the only person in that room with cancer, but she is surely the sickest. And yet,” he continued, to nods all around, “she is also the healthiest of any of us.”

“Be thine own palace, or the world’s thy jail.”
– John Donne

Disease need not define us

Mimi’s reaction highlights a distinction between disease and illness, the importance of which is becoming increasingly apparent. Simply put, a body has a disease, but only a person can have an illness. Different people can respond very differently to the same diagnosis, and those differences sometimes correspond to demographic categories, such as male or female. Mimi is a beautiful example of the ability to respond with joy and gratitude in the face of even life’s seemingly darkest moments.

Consider another very different patient the cancer team met with shortly after Mimi. Ron, a man in his 40s who had been cured of lymphoma, arrived in the oncology clinic expecting the attending oncologist to sign a form stating that he could not work and therefore qualified for disability payments. So far as the attending knew, there was no reason Ron couldn’t hold a job.

Ron’s experience of disease was very different from Mimi’s, a phenomenon familiar to cancer physicians. Despite a dire prognosis, Mimi was full of gratitude. Ron, by contrast, though cured of his disease and apparently completely healthy, looked at his life with resentment, even anger. He felt deeply wronged by his bout with cancer and operated with a sense that others should do what they could to help make it up to him.

Mimi was dying but content with her life. Ron was healthy but filled with bitterness. Both patients had the same diagnosis – cancer – but the two human beings differed dramatically, and so too did their illness experiences. Mimi felt blessed by 60 years of a good marriage, while Ron saw in his cancer just one more example of how unfair life had been to him.

“Death be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so…”
– John Donne

The real meaning of health

When the members of the cancer team agreed that Mimi was the healthiest person in the room, they were thinking of health in terms of wholeness or integrity. In fact, the word health shares the same source as the word whole, implying completeness or fullness. Ron felt repeatedly slighted, but Mimi looked at life from a perspective of abundance.

A full life is not necessarily marked by material wealth, power over others, or fame. Many people who live richly do so modestly and quietly, never amassing fortunes, commanding legions, or seeing their picture in the newspaper. What enriches their lives is not success in the conventional sense but the knowledge that they have done their best to remain focused on what really matters.

Mimi easily called to mind many moments when she and those she cared about shared their company and their love. Any sense of regret or sorrow over what might have been quickly gave way to a sense of gratitude for what really was, still is, and will be. Her outlook on life was shaped by a deep conviction that it had a meaning that would transcend her own death.

When someone has built up a life ledger full of meaningful experiences, the prospect of serious illness and death often do not seem so threatening. For Mimi, who had lived most of her days with a keen awareness that they would not go on forever, death’s meaning had been transformed from “Life is pointless” to “Make every day count.”

Mimi regarded the prospect of dying as a lens through which to view the meaning of life. She saw her illness as another adventure through which she and Jim would pass. Death would separate them, but it would also draw them closer together, enabling them to see more clearly than ever how much their love meant to them.

From Mimi’s point of view, death is not a contaminant, fatally introduced to life at its final stage. Instead death is a fire that burns away all that is not essential, purifying a person’s vision of what is most real and most worth caring about. Though not happy to be ill, Mimi was in a profound sense grateful for death. Her sentiments echo those of the poet John Donne:

“One short sleep past and we wake eternally:

Spread the Love

2017-02-01-1485910515-4279674-tumblr_inline_o2i0vpIyfO1rk55ea_500.jpg

For many, Valentine’s Day is typically focused on romantic love between two people. For me, Valentine’s Day has always been about sharing love with everyone in my circle and celebrating all the love that is present right here, right now – not mourning the absence of another, but embracing the beauty of the now. Single or in relationship, Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year.

Many of my friends, male and female, experience stress, sadness, and longing at this time of year, and while I understand how they might feel this way, to dwell in a depressive state focused on that which seems lacking is ultimately a waste of time and energy. It’s also a way of negating any form of love present in your life right now, including the love you have for yourself.

There are so many opportunities to spread the love on Valentine’s Day, and perhaps this is an important opportunity to demonstrate love and compassion towards yourself. I think most of us realize by now that the basis for long-term real love – true love with another person – begins with self-love.

Every Valentine’s Day, regardless of whether I am single or dating someone, I always buy myself something special. Work within your budget and do something that feels indulgent and blissful. This is about honoring and appreciating yourself. I love to schedule a spa session, indulge in my favorite chocolate delicacies, and buy myself beautiful lingerie–especially when I’m single. Nothing makes me feel more sensual and luxurious than fabulous lingerie even if I’m the only one who gets to appreciate it!

Then, I turn my attention to friends who may be feeling depressed, left out, or lonely. I send valentines to my favorite people and gift my friends and family with a beautiful candle or treat I know they will enjoy. Letting others know they are loved and appreciated, even if it’s simply through a text message, gives them the heartwarming gift of feeling seen.

Whatever you choose, do it with joy and revel in pleasure, which incidentally is the best way to magnetize more love your way. What could be more attractive than a generous, loving person radiating happiness and engaging [heart]fully in all life is offering in this present moment? These are the beautiful people you encounter throughout life who literally glow from the inside out making them irresistible to all.

How are you going to spread the love this Valentine’s Day?

Latino History in Rhode Island

Latino History in Rhode Island

In 1956, the Rosarios came to Providence and opened the first Hispanic food market in Rhode Island. This Dominican family’s move signaled a new era of Latin American migration for the Ocean State. In the mid-1960s, Guatemalans came to Rhode Island as refugees from the dirty war at home, and Puerto Ricans arrived in the 1920s looking for agricultural work. From the Colombian factory workers who settled in Central Falls in the mid-1960s to the Cubans who fled Castro’s revolution in the 1950s and 1960s, Latin Americans were flocking to the coastal towns and quaint neighborhoods of Rhode Island looking for brighter futures and a place to call home. Join author Marta V. Martinez as she turns a collection of oral histories into a fascinating story of the birth of Rhode Island’s vibrant Latino community.

Republicans Pave The Way To Drug Test Poor And Jobless

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump said in his inaugural address that his administration would “get our people off of welfare and back to work.”

Trump hasn’t said much about how he’d reform welfare. But other members of his party have lots of ideas ― including drug tests for the poor and unemployed.

In the wake of the Great Recession, Republicans across the country complained that unemployed people were taking drugs instead of available jobs. Lawmakers pushed drug testing as a solution, but the Obama administration and federal courts blocked most of those efforts.

With Trump now in charge, Republicans are making moves. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) asked Trump in December to consider allowing states to drug test applicants for food stamps, one of the largest antipoverty programs in the U.S.

And this month, Republicans in the House of Representatives are moving legislation that would undo an Obama administration rule restricting states’ ability to drug test unemployment claimants.

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) said during a Tuesday hearing that letting states do drug tests “benefits the unemployed by helping to assure future employers that unemployment claimants reentering the workforce are truly able and available for work.”

Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.) accurately countered that Republicans had cited no evidence of rampant drug use among recipients of unemployment insurance.

“We are considering policy that slanders unemployed workers by assuming they are drug users,” Davis said.

The unemployment drug screening policy is among dozens of recent Obama administration regulations that congressional Republicans can overturn in the coming weeks using a special legislative procedure that lets lawmakers get rid of recently issued regulations.

Since around 2010, Republicans (and some Democrats) have looked to urinalysis as a solution to economic woes, with lawmakers typically saying they’ve heard from local business leaders who are unable to recruit job applicants willing or able to pass drug tests. More than a dozen states have enacted some sort of drug screening requirement for beneficiaries of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the federal program most closely associated with the word “welfare.” It’s the only program that explicitly allows states to add a drug screening requirement, though courts can strike down random or blanket testing. The testing hasn’t caught many drug users

With more than 40 million recipients, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program caseload is roughly 10 times bigger than TANF’s. Federal law bars states from adding drug tests, but Wisconsin and Georgia have nevertheless enacted policies that the Obama administration blocked administratively and in court. It’s hard to imagine the Trump administration doing the same.

We are considering policy that slanders unemployed workers by assuming they are drug users.
Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.)

Unemployment insurance is much more of a middle class benefit, since people are only eligible if they’ve worked for most of the previous year and were laid off because their employer is struggling. Federal law has long disallowed states from adding drug tests as a condition for receiving benefits, which are funded by taxes on business payrolls. But in 2012, Congress passed legislation that would allow testing for unemployment claimants in occupations where drug tests are common, for instance in jobs with a public safety component. Democrats gave Republicans drug testing; in return they got a costly extension of long-term unemployment benefits.

The law directed the Labor Department to come up with rules for deciding which occupations typically require testing. When the department finalized its rule in August, four years after Congress passed the law, Republicans said the Obama administration wrote it so narrowly that states basically wouldn’t be allowed to test anybody. By waiting so long, the Obama administration also made the rule vulnerable to being overturned by the Congressional Review Act, a rarely used legislative tool that lets lawmakers dump almost any recently issued regulation.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a statement that the Obama rule “contradicts congressional intent, oversteps executive authority, and undercuts a state’s ability to implement the law.”

On Tuesday, Republicans on the House Rules Committee advanced a resolution by Brady that would strike the rule. A committee spokeswoman said the resolution would be on the House floor next week. If approved, the measure would then head to the Senate, where it would only need a simple majority to pass. Once the rule’s off the books, either Congress could write a new law or the Trump Labor Department could simply draft a new rule. Then states could go ahead with new unemployment drug testing laws.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Does Your Vision for Your Life Cause You to Look Up…or Down?

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a Cathedral.” ~ Antone de Saint-Exupery

Several years ago, while in Barcelona, Spain, I had the opportunity to visit Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi’s, one-of-a kind, “Sagrada Família.” While not officially a “cathedral” because it is not yet the seat of a Bishop, it is often thought of as such because it stands as high or higher than many ancient cathedrals. What is unique about the structure is that, while Gothic in design, it is also very “Art Nouveau” and unlike any other cathedral ever built; it is one-of-a-kind, in a class of its own. If you have ever seen pictures of it you’ll understand why I call it one of a kind. I encourage you to Google “Sagrada Família” and see for yourself–you’ll be rather stunned.

Gaudi designed and took over the construction of the project in 1883 and, the amazing thing is, to this day, it is still a work in progress. It stands higher than many skyscrapers; scaffolding and huge mechanical cranes loom in the skyline. The completion of the project is tentatively set for 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s passing. It is said that he devoted the best of his years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Can you imagine holding such a grand vision and not living to see it come to full fruition?

One-hundred and twenty-eight years after his vision was cast, I humbly stood at the base of this monolithic structure and gazed skyward wondering how much more had to be done to complete his vision. My mind raced back to the year 1883 when there was little more than barren land and rocks in that spot and I imagined him standing there, looking up, seeing his masterpiece in its completed form. That’s what visionaries do–they see their dream in its completed form long before it is realized in the material world. The transformation of concrete and rocks into a cathedral happened before Gaudi’s workers ever broke ground…and the fact that they are still working on the manifestation of it proves it was a very big vision.

Do you have a vision for your life and, if so, how big is it? Can you see yourself living that life now, even if the outer manifestation of it isn’t yet visible? While many say you have to see it to believe it, others are saying, you have to believe it to see it. Which are you? This is where and when the foundation for a life worth living is established. The practice is to contemplate your life as Gaudi contemplated his cathedral–as a completed idea in the creative Mind of a Universe that knows no limitations. In other words, the sky really is the limit; the only caveat is that this creative Mind is waiting for you to upload the design blueprints known as your belief system. What is your vision for your life? Are you looking up, or looking down? Be mindful of where your predominate thoughts go because, whether you are aware of it or not, that is the design plan you are uploading.

Clearly, Gaudi believed in his vision, so much so that it had no alternative but to become a reality, even years after his passing. That is a powerful vision when it takes on a life of its own. Turning a pile of rocks into a cathedral isn’t difficult once you have the vision–the Universe conspires to support you in your vision if you are willing to stand in it, own it and act on it. We are all visionaries–that is to say, we each hold in our mind a vision for our life; what it can or can’t be, might or might not be, or, will or won’t be. So the question really isn’t, do you have a vision for your life–if you are alive you have a vision. The real question is, what is your vision? Are you looking down at the rocks or up to the sky? Remember, the Universe is listening and it is already uploading your blueprints.

Peace, Dennis

Lena Dunham Slams The Shame Associated With Psychiatric Medication

Lena Dunham is arguably one of the most vocal celebrity mental health advocates ― and it couldn’t be more necessary.

The “Girls” actress and creator joined her producing partner Jenni Konner and youth anxiety expert Anne Marie Albano for a conversation about childhood mental health at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on Tuesday. As expected, Dunham was candid about her own experience with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder growing up.

“I don’t ever remember a time not being anxious,” Dunham said. “I don’t remember a single second of being alive where it didn’t seem like there was looming disaster.”

Dunham is far from alone. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, an estimated one in eight children is affected by an anxiety disorder. If left untreated, children with anxiety can fall behind developmentally and are at risk for other behavioral issues.

The actress dealt with mental health conditions for years before talking with a doctor and deciding to take medication. The decision was not easy for Dunham, who initially felt humiliated by the stigma surrounding mental health medication.

“I don’t know what I thought it would make harder, since my life was already completely impossible,” Dunham said. “I also had an incredible amount of shame. At camp, the kids who had to stand in line for medication were freaks. You either were cool and had diabetes, or you were OCD and were a freak.”

Of course, this negative stereotype surrounding treatment couldn’t be more wrong, and the actress has since become an outspoken advocate for psychiatric medication and against negative representations of mental illness in pop culture.

Can I live?

A photo posted by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) on

“Lately I’ve been noticing that nearly every pop cultural image we see of a woman on psychiatric medication is that of an out-of-control, exhausting and exhausted girl who needs help,” Dunham wrote on Instagram last year. “But guess what? Most women on meds are women who have been brave enough to help themselves.”

Dunham said Tuesday that she’s finally reached a place where she no longer feels like she has to keep quiet about dealing with a mental health condition.

“When you have anxiety and then you have shame about your anxiety, you’re punishing yourself twice,” she explained.

Konner, who experiences anxiety and depression, added a plea to end the stigma that clouds mental illness.

“I wish we lived in a world where [anxiety] was treated like high cholesterol, because it’s just as common,” Konner told the crowd.

Agreed. Keep on fighting the good fight, ladies.

Several Tornadoes Batter Louisiana

Towns from New Orleans to Baton Rouge were struck hard by several tornadoes and multiple storm fronts Tuesday.

A number of injuries were reported as videos began to surface of the damage wrought by severe weather in Louisiana. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and upper Plaquemines parishes, among others. It confirmed that at least three tornadoes had already touched down.

The Times-Picayune captured some of the damage in New Orleans East on video:

More than 10,000 customers were without power in and around New Orleans, according to Fox 8. There were reports of dime-sized hail in St. Charles Parish, 50 mph wind gusts near Lakefront Airport and structural damage across Southern Louisiana. Residents in the path of the storm were told to take shelter.

Southeastern Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi fell victim to a storm system that brought five tornadoes in late January, ultimately killing 18 people, according to The Times-Picayune.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Why You Need to Fire Your Inner Monday Morning Quarterback

2017-02-06-1486419171-9252521-shutterstock_148161395.jpg

It’s no surprise that all of the Monday morning quarterbacks have shown up in full splendor today, following the biggest comeback in Super bowl history. Full disclosure: I’m a lifelong New Englander, but promise not to say something like “Hellooooo, haters”, or “we’re wicked awesome” in a thick PAAHHK the CAAAH Boston accent between sips of Dunkin’ Donuts.

In case you didn’t know, a Monday morning quarterback (MMQB) is a person who criticizes, passes judgment, and offers hindsight solutions to problems. They are very easy to find today across talk radio, TV, and social media feeds.

They should’ve done this or that. Why on earth didn’t they see it? They made such a textbook mistake. It’s all SOOO obvious. OMG.

Psychology can help explain why hindsight bias is such a trap for us. That feeling that “we knew it all along” arises from our tendencies towards creating stories that make sense based on the information we have. Researchers Neal Roese and Kathleen Vohs suggest that our desire for closure makes us apt to promote a positive view of ourselves. We get all puffed up, even when the conclusions we draw are incorrect.

Hindsight bias can prevent us from learning from experiences, or taking a deeper dive into the forces at hand, and coming up with a more accurate analysis of what’s transpired.

Most of us are not professional sports players, with millions of eyes on us, but we’ve all faced our own versions of MMQB’s, jousting us with “I told you so’s” and “what were you thinking’s”. Worse, many of us struggle with our own pesky inner MMQB that constantly needles us through the play by play of our lives.

I should’ve never done that. Why didn’t I realize it at the time? How stupid can I be?

While reflecting on mistakes is a vital part of our growth and progress, all the ‘shoulding’ that comes from our inner MMQB can sabotage happiness and wellbeing. Here’s how to fire a reactive, overly critical MMQB, and replace with a more rational, wise one:

1. Silence your inner hater. Do you tend to call yourself names, instead of cutting yourself some slack? Do you take a disproportionate amount of blame in a situation that’s gone wrong? Do you feel a constant sense of under accomplishment, no matter how much you’ve done? These are red flags that your inner MMQB needs walking papers.

2. Review the tape. Do you think every move you’ve made has gone wrong? Do you see your mistakes as catastrophic with no room for learning? Your MMQB might be going purely off the amygdala, the mechanism in your brain that regulates fear responses. Take a needed break to regroup and revisit once the frontal lobe, the part of the brain responsible for reason, has time to review the play more accurately.

3. Stay agile. Do you feel a sense of dread and doom? Does it seem like there’s no way out? Stay on your toes, and be ready to pivot away from original conclusions you have drawn. Train your inner MMQB to rethink first glances, and check for new alternatives and approaches to the problems you face. Be on the lookout for opportunities to change directions. So much falls out of the realm of our control, and while we can’t always win, we can learn to adapt and stay in the game for the long haul.

Hindsight might not be as 20/20 as we’d like. If your inner MMQB has become obnoxiously full of unsolicited, negative advice, now is the time to fire and rehire one that is more rational, compassionate and nimble.

Ryan Reynolds Shares The Moments That ‘Crush’ Him As A Parent

Fatherhood has certainly brought out Ryan Reynolds’ sentimental side.

The actor spoke about his parenting experience last week while at Harvard University to accept the The Hasty Pudding Theatricals 2017 Man of the Year award.

During a press conference for the event, Reynolds shared his proudest parenting moment.

“Just seeing my older daughter be so infatuated with our younger daughter, who’s 4 months old,” he said. “Seeing her kiss her and hug her and hold her and do all those things, those kinda crush me. Whereas they might put anyone else to sleep. But for me, that’s pretty cool.”

Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively are parents to 2-year-old James and 4-month-old Ines.

Since becoming a dad, Reynolds has followed in the footsteps of many other parents before him and turned to Twitter. The actor is fond of tweeting his hilarious musings about parenthood.

We look forward to many more years of hilarious parenting tweets.

EMP – Nuclear Spring

EMP – Nuclear Spring is Book 2 of the EMP series realistically depicting life post World War III. Four years have passed since the EMP attack and the nuclear bombs that followed. For the first time, the survivors are able to come out of the Yucca Mountain underground complex initially constructed to store nuclear waste. They find themselves under the surveillance of Islamic activists of the Islamic Brotherhood who survived in Central America. The Brotherhood is moving into Nevada to take control of the Hoover Dam, which gives the Brotherhood control of the Colorado River and the electricity it generates for the western United States. Both the Brotherhood and the survivors in the mountain realize the jet stream is returning the fallout of the nuclear winter back to the region. Both must secure food and supplies to carry them through the return of the fallout. The survivors in the mountain repel attacks on the mountain by the Brotherhood and enter the next phase of nuclear winter prepared to battle the Islamic Brotherhood and drive them from the region. The mountain survivors establish a meteorology station capable of monitoring the weather fronts still carrying fallout from the bombs. The fickle weather controls their stay outside the mountain. Colonel Bradley realizes the need for intelligence on what awaits them outside the mountain. He forms a nerd squad to seek surviving weather satellites and satellites still active in other parts of the world. He and some of the others suspect one of the Homeland Securities of being an Islamic mole. Their suspicions are proven true when the mole detonates a bomb inside the mountain that takes many lives. The mountain uses a secret weapon from Area 51 to protect the mountain.

Mike Huckabee’s Transphobic ‘Joke’ Slammed By Stars, Allies

Mike Huckabee’s attempt to zing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) on Twitter this weekend was a spectacularly offensive fail.

In a Saturday tweet, the former Arkansas governor and presidential hopeful appeared to liken Schumer to Brandon Teena, the transgender man whose tragic life inspired Hilary Swank’s Oscar-winning role in the 1999 film, “Boys Don’t Cry.” Huckabee’s remark was a nod to President Donald Trump, who claimed that his Jan. 27 executive order prompted Schumer to shed “fake tears” while delivering an impassioned speech against the Muslim travel ban at a subsequent press conference.

The tweet immediately sparked outrage from a number of LGBTQ celebrities and allies. As many stars pointed out, the implication was particularly cringe-worthy because Schumer lost members of his family in the Holocaust, while Teena was murdered in a 1993 hate crime.

But the best response came from out comedian Cameron Esposito. The 35-year-old, who has never shied away from incorporating LGBTQ themes into her work, cited Huckabee’s gaffe while asking her Twitter followers to donate to Trans Lifeline, a transgender advocacy organization, in Teena’s memory.

Esposito told The Huffington Post that she’d been “struck by the passion and dedication” TransLife’s founders had for the LGBTQ community. Her tweet, she said, helped raise about $ 18,000 in 24 hours for the organization.

“I’m going to believe Huckabee probably hadn’t seen the film and didn’t know Brandon Teena’s story, which we all should know, because I can’t believe anyone would be cruel enough to make that joke having seen it,” she said. “He’s legislated on us, given opinion after opinion about the value of my community, but he doesn’t know who we are.”

She added, “The queer community is strong, diverse, varied. We are every race, income level, nationality. I will not stand for anyone in my community to be demeaned or left behind.”

Amen, Cameron!

WATCH: “Finding” the Time to Do Things

Do you have things you’d like to do, but keep putting them off until you “find the time”…? And in today’s busy world, where we are constantly bombarded with different things to give our attention to, how often does that strategy actually work out? Here’s a video to help you stop kidding yourself, and start enhancing your chances of success.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

Earth Prayer

O Endless Creator, Force of Life, Seat of the Unconscious,
Dharma, Atman, Ra, Qalb, Dear Center of our Love,
Christlight, Yaweh, Allah, Mawu,
Mother of the Universe…

Let us, when swimming with the stream,
become the stream.
Let us, when moving with the music,
become the music.
Let us, when rocking the wounded,
become the suffering.

Let us live deep enough
till there is only one direction,
and slow enough till there is only
the beginning of time,
and loud enough in our hearts
till there is no need to speak.

Let us live for the grace beneath all we want,
let us see it in everything and everyone,
till we admit to the mystery
that when I look deep enough into you,
I find me, and when you dare to hear my fear
in the recess of your heart, you recognize it
as your secret which you thought
no one else knew.

O let us embrace
that unexpected moment of unity
as the atom of God.
Let us have the courage
to hold each other when we break
and worship what unfolds…

O nameless spirit that is not done with us,
let us love without a net
beyond the fear of death
until the speck of peace
we guard so well
becomes the world.

A Question to Walk With: In conversation with a friend or loved one, describe the speck of peace you guard and what it means to you to live without a net?

Recently, Sounds True published a major collection of my poetry, The Way Under the Way, which contains three separate books of poetry, gathering 217 poems retrieved and shaped over the past twenty years. Mitch McConnell Marvels At The Judicial Crisis He Created

WASHINGTON ― If there is a hallmark issue that defines Mitch McConnell’s time as Senate majority leader under President Barack Obama, it was his obstruction of judicial nominees.

The Kentucky Republican was so intent on stymying Obama’s influence on the courts, he used every Senate procedural trick in the book to jam the confirmation process. He succeeded, too: He denied Obama a Supreme Court confirmation and slashed the number of judges the president put on the federal bench.

But he did so at the cost of driving up judicial vacancies around the country, so much so that the federal bench is now emptier than it’s been in decades and the number of judicial emergencies ― when a court is so overburdened it can barely function ― spiked from 12 to 43 in the two years since Republicans retook control of the Senate.

Alas, it’s a new day, and Republicans control the White House and Congress. The GOP leader is now ready to fill all the empty court seats he helped create.

“We have an excellent chance of clearing the deck of all the vacancies that we inherited from the previous administration, and there are quite a number of them,” McConnell said in a Wednesday interview with talk show host Hugh Hewitt. “Barack Obama did a lot of damage to the country in many ways. One of the ways was his court appointments.”

It’s a stunning assessment of the state of the judiciary by the politician who has been hurting it the most. Clearly, Republicans do have an excellent chance of filling court vacancies ― because they were the ones refusing to fill them under Obama. McConnell’s strategy of preventing Obama from filling court seats with his nominees and holding those seats open for a future GOP president to fill worked, from a shrewdly political standpoint. But it’s left the federal court system in disrepair.

There are supposed to be a total of 856 judges running the nation’s district and circuit courts. Right now, 109 of those seats are empty. A functional Senate would be confirming nearly all judicial nominees within months, but some courts have been waiting years for the Senate to fill an empty seat. There’s a federal appeals court in Wisconsin that’s been waiting 2,586 days for a vacancy to be filled  ― looking at you, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.). A district court in North Carolina has had a vacancy for 4,054 days ― hi, Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.). That’s more than 11 years.

The problem with not filling empty judge seats is that cases on those courts get really backed up, sometimes for years. Sitting judges forced to take on heavier workloads struggle with burnout.

Still, those hurt the most are the everyday people trying to get their day in court. It might be someone who got kicked off of Social Security and is due compensation. It might be someone who lost their home, or someone suing an employer for discrimination. Small businesses rely on federal courts to resolve all kinds of disputes as well. When these cases get backed up, justice for them is delayed, too.

Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond and an expert on federal judicial selection, called it “preposterous” that McConnell would gloss over the damage he’s done to the courts.

“The major reason the federal courts have record vacancies is Republican obstruction spearheaded by Mitch McConnell throughout Obama’s eight years,” said Tobias. He said he worries that the GOP’s efforts to hamper the judicial confirmation process may have eroded people’s faith in the role of the courts. “It shows consummate disrespect for a co-equal branch of the federal government. It also undermines public respect for the process and the government branches.”

It’s not as if Obama spent eight years nominating radically progressive judges, either. Republicans recommended many of those nominees to the White House in the first place, and then quietly worked with Obama to usher them through the Senate confirmation process. Most of his confirmed judges sailed through with strong bipartisan support.

McConnell himself voted to confirm most of Obama’s judges, and worked with the president to confirm judges for his own state. Here’s the GOP leader in December 2014, raving about the Senate unanimously confirming Obama’s nominee, Gregory Stivers, to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.

“I congratulate Greg Stivers on his confirmation as United States District Judge for the Western District of Kentucky. Greg is an experienced and respected civil practitioner who has represented Kentuckians diligently for nearly 30 years, and he is well qualified to serve on the federal bench. Greg has worked hard for the people and institutions of the Bowling Green area, including representing Western Kentucky University in a range of complex litigation matters. He has the temperament and judgment required for the federal bench, and will serve the people of Kentucky well as an Article III judge.”

The good news for the federal judiciary is that McConnell is finally ready to let judicial nominees get through. The thing to watch now is whether Republicans use their control of the White House and the Senate to push through nominees who aren’t just conservative but have extreme right-wing ideologies.

Democrats can’t do much to stop them from doing that, but they can loudly complain, which could persuade moderate Republicans to help deny their confirmations.

Black Women Face Devastating Losses If Obamacare Is Repealed

Bianca Adams worked part-time jobs as a spa professional, sometimes juggling two or three at a time, for years. But none of them offered her insurance, which meant that the 47-year-old with diabetes often went to the emergency room for care.

“I was one of those people that had to go to the emergency when my blood sugar got too high and I needed fluids,” Adams told The Huffington Post. “There was really no one managing my health at that point.”

When her Medicaid coverage through the Affordable Care Act began in 2014, Adams, who has been disabled with severe knee problems for 25 years, underwent three major surgeries in six months: a partial hysterectomy to remove a large tumor in June, a total right knee replacement in September and a left knee replacement in November.

“It was brutal, but everything needed to be done. I was very, very sick — and had I not done it then, I’d probably be on a walker right now,” she said.

But that wasn’t her only concern. “I felt like once Republicans got back into office, it would be repealed,” she said. “That was literally the first thing on my mind — to get everything done as soon as possible.”

Black women stand to lose the most if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. This demographic is more susceptible to diabetes, uterine fibroids, obesity, high-blood pressure, domestic abuse and sexual assault than any other. Many black women also have children who depend on them for their health care, since black women are more likely to be sole providers for their household

Obamacare reduced coverage disparities for a number of black women, allowing them to access routine health care treatment and check-ups with a primary care physician. The preventive care clause in the ACA has been life-changing for many black women: It gives them better access to early cancer screenings. Black women are twice as likely as white women to die of cervical cancer and twice as likely to be diagnosed in the later stages of breast cancer.

Historically, the government has paid attention to black women’s health only when it’s convenient, said Joan Faber McAlister, an associate professor at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Black women’s health has been pretty much the lowest priority, almost has been completely invisible,” McAlister said. “The only time we see a lot of attention to black women’s health is when it’s being misrepresented to undermine social programs that don’t even primarily benefit black women.”

As of Jan. 1, 32 states had expanded Medicaid to include most low-income Americans. If President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans move forward with their plans to repeal Obamacare, that coverage will go away. So will the tax credits that help lower- and middle-class families afford insurance. Many of the people hit hardest will be black women.

Here are some of their stories.

After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area for a new job in late September 2007, Karla Baptiste was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at age 34. A mastectomy that October determined that Baptiste’s cancer was worse than doctors had thought ― it was present in 14 of her lymph nodes and had progressed to stage 3.

She began chemotherapy that November. She would later have three reconstructive surgeries on her breast, six weeks of daily radiation and take regular doses of Tamoxifen, a cancer treatment drug, for four years.

Baptiste was declared cancer free in 2008. But in July 2014, a lesion was found on her vertebrae. The cancer had metastasized to her spine. After another round of treatments, the lesion was gone by February 2015.

Baptiste shows no cancer activity in her body now but is still considered to be a high cancer risk. “I’m cancer free now, but I have stage 4 cancer, and there is no stage 5. I don’t want to go back to a time when insurance companies can deny me just because they decide they don’t want to pay for something.”

“And then I die,” she continued. “It’s that serious for me.”

Baptiste won’t be able to pay for the medicine she needs to survive without the ACA. Her insurance was billed $ 426,702 last year for her care. She paid $ 2,500 of that.

“If the ACA is repealed and not replaced with something that has guardrails for insurance companies, patients like me with pre-existing conditions are the ones they will drop or deny coverage for,” she said. “We cost them too much. The ACA gives me peace of mind that I will receive the care that I need.”

“I’m in a situation where I’m going to be treated indefinitely,” she added. “It’s not something like I get chemo and I’m done ― having my medication is that important to me. It’s keeping me alive.”

Aitza Burgess Reynolds, 22, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

When Aitza Burgess Reynolds’ mom started receiving disability payments in 2015, the 22-year-old college senior was no longer covered under her mother’s plan. She signed up for health care through the ACA marketplace based on her stepfather’s experiences with the program. When he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, the insurance he obtained through the ACA helped the family financially by covering most of his treatments before he died.

The health insurance offered by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is just over $ 1,100 a semester, was too expensive for Burgess Reynolds. It didn’t include dental or eye care. She has to have her eyes checked every six months and needs prescription glasses and contacts costing over $ 500 to keep from being legally blind.

If the law is repealed and her mom loses disability, Burgess Reynolds would become the sole provider for her household, having to insure herself and her mother. She’d also have to delay going back to graduate school to obtain her doctorate.

“It’s a great injustice to us, and it’s a failure of our system ― maybe not even a failure because, from what I’ve learned, it was systematically designed to be that way,” she said, with the cards stacked against black women.

Akosua, 37, Dallas

Akosua, who did not want her real name published, owns a photography business with her husband. The ACA helps them remain covered since they are self-employed. Akosua and her husband also have pre-existing conditions (she is overweight and he has diabetes).

“The Obama administration really seemed to think about people’s lives and really have compassion for the choices people want to make to be better,” she said.

Akousa was a teacher before opening her own business ― and she was miserable. Obamacare gave her a chance to pursue her dream job. But, she says, politicians want to create an underclass in which people don’t have access to health care and can’t be healthy physically or emotionally.

“We’re moving from the Obama administration to one where people have open disdain for their own citizens ― and that is a major issue to me,” she said. “There’s a great deal of cruelty, and I believe that the repeal of the ACA is not really to [balance the] budget. It’s deliberate social destruction.”

Sandra Thornton, 60, West Point, Georgia

Sandra Thornton is a divorced mom with three kids. She worked for a company called Wide Open West for 37 years before being diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel syndrome. She worked for seven more years after a surgery on her wrist in 2007, then was laid off in August 2014 after a short medical leave.

The following April, Thornton was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. “Without the health care, I wouldn’t be talking to you today,” she said.

Thornton, who is now cancer free, underwent a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, 38 rounds of radiation and six rounds of chemotherapy. Sickness from the chemotherapy landed her in the hospital after each treatment.

Chemo cost more than $ 6,000 each time, Thornton said. “Who can afford this? No one.”

“You’ve got to have quality health care. Some of the people wouldn’t even take the insurance because it was affordable health care.” Thornton said that initially she couldn’t find a doctor within 100 miles who would take her insurance, until the insurer helped her find a physician.

“You’re already fighting to get well, but then you got to fight the insurance company? It’s pitiful,” she said.

Aisha Crossley, 38, Las Vegas

Aisha Crossley is the head of her household. The 38-year-old casualty specialist for AAA doesn’t qualify for any public assistance and, while she’s covered through her employer, her four children are insured through the Affordable Care Act.

Crossley’s oldest son, 21, has severe asthma. He’s been seeing a pulmonary specialist regularly since he was 2 and is on four medications that need to be refilled each month. Crossley said it’s a blessing to be able to pay an $ 80 quarterly premium and take him to the doctor on a regular basis.

Without insurance, Crossley says, her oldest son would be in the hospital with pneumonia and probably close to dying. “I also have to be concerned if my child is going to have access to the medication that has allowed him to be alive and control his asthma on a daily basis.”

Crossley herself needs monthly medications, her other son sees a dermatologist regularly for a skin condition and her 7-year-old daughter had surgery in October.

This is why a potential repeal of the ACA scares her. She could put her children on her employer’s insurance, but it would cost at least $ 500 a month, leaving Crossley with a maddening decision.

“I’d have to decide on if I want to go with the employer-driven insurance or have my kids be uninsured so we can still eat,” she said.

Faber likened such choices to those that women face in third-world countries.

“You’re facing a choice of which child is going to live in the United States. In a country this wealthy and advanced, we can have a space program but we can’t help women keep their children alive?”
