Food and Faith

Food and Faith

This book provides a comprehensive theological framework for assessing significance of eating, employing a Trinitarian theological lens to evaluate food production and consumption practices as they are being worked out in today’s industrial food systems. Norman Wirzba combines the tools of ecological, agrarian, cultural, biblical and theological analyses to draw a picture of eating that cares for creatures and that honors God. Unlike books that focus on vegetarianism or food distribution as the key theological matters, this book broadens the scope to include discussions on the sacramental character of eating, eating’s ecological and social contexts, the meaning of death and sacrifice as they relate to eating, the Eucharist as the place of inspiration and orientation, the importance of saying grace and whether or not there will be eating in Heaven. Food and Faith demonstrates that eating is of profound economic, moral and theological significance.

John Kerry: It Was ‘Inappropriate’ For Donald Trump To Knock Germany’s Leader On Refugee Policy

WASHINGTON ― Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that President-elect Donald Trump had made a mistake by attacking German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s history of admitting refugees to her country.

“I thought, frankly, it was inappropriate for a president-elect of the United States to be stepping into the politics of other countries in a quite direct manner,” Kerry told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “He’ll have to speak to that. As of Friday, he’s responsible for that relationship.”

Trump said in an interview with the Times of London and the German newspaper Bild that Merkel had made “one very catastrophic mistake, and that was taking all of these illegals,” referring to the Syrian refugees and other migrants the country took in. The president-elect has frequently derided Syrian refugees as a “Trojan horse” for terrorists ― and once officially proposed banning all Muslims from entering the U.S., but later said he would like to ban people from certain countries, mostly majority-Muslim ones.

Trump isn’t the president yet, which means the Obama administration is still in charge of foreign policy ― even when the president-elect makes it difficult. When Merkel responded to Trump, she stressed that he hadn’t taken office yet.

“I’m waiting for his inauguration, as is proper,” she said in Berlin, Politico reported. “Then we’ll work with him on all levels. He has just stated his positions, which have been known for quite some time. My positions are also known.”

Kerry said he thought Merkel “was extremely courageous” in her response to the refugee crisis and that the Obama administration “valued her leadership enormously.”

“I think we have to be very careful about suggesting that one of the strongest leaders in Europe and most of important players with respect to where we are heading made one mistake or another,” Kerry said of Trump’s comments. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to be commenting on that.”

Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Where is HOME?

A good friend of mine shared a question posed by guitarist, Chris Wood on her Facebook page:

“Bob Dylan described eloquently how his music has been the quest to get home. Now as much as ever feels like a good time to ask you; what feels like home to you? Are you there already or do you still have a way to go?”

On the same day, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released a new song called “Castle on the Hill”. The song retraces the singer’s youth, returning to his former home and recalling his memories en route.

I grew up in a small rural town called Penrith in Cumbria, England. It’s a tourist town situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. I return periodically but I’ve realised over the years how my fond memories are stored in music rather than the place itself.

I consider Penrith to be my home but every time I return I feel more distant, more disconnected. Maybe what I search for is my youth – to remember Penrith as I did back then and feel the way the town made me feel then – but lately it seems empty, soulless. The only way I can get that feeling back is by listening to music that reminds me of when it was my home. That works, then I miss it, then it feels like home again.

When my mind traces back through all the places I’ve lived, they each have songs associated with the memories. In that sense, each place feels like home. There’s a nostalgic pull to every dwelling for different reasons and different songs. For some, scents can also trigger memories of places they consider home.

But where is home? Is it the house or town you grew up in or the house or town where you raised your family? Maybe it’s the place you felt most loved or perhaps the place you gave most love to. How does our heart identify home?

For many, home is more than a memory. For refugees, home is their country; for the street children in Brazil and India, home is wherever they feel safest.

So are we all constantly striving to find home? Do creative people, like Bob Dylan, find sanctuary in their work?

I’ve spent hours pondering an answer to Chris Wood’s question and feel no definitive place as my home. The house where I live now, and watched my family grow, is my home but Penrith is my home town. Maybe I am still on that quest to go home, but I fear that home was a moment in time…

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what you consider home and why, so please comment below.

The Two Tribes

As we approach Inauguration day, I want to offer a deeper, broader context for the divisions we are facing as a nation.

The Two Tribes

In the beginning, when the first humans came across each other, it went two ways. Upon seeing someone different, the more fearful one said, “You’re different. Go away.” The other, upon seeing someone not like him, said, “You’re different. Come, teach me what I don’t know.” While our reasoning has grown more complicated throughout the centuries, it’s essentially the same. “Go away” or “Come, teach me.”

Since the beginning, the two tribes have had their philosophies. The “Go away” tribe has always believed that human beings, by their nature, are self-serving and untrustworthy, in need of control. The “Go away” tribe believes in stringent laws and constraints, both moral and legal, to ensure that people don’t run amuck. The “Come, teach me” tribe believes that human beings, by their nature, are kind and trustworthy. The “Come, teach me” tribe believes in empowering laws that cultivate freedom, to ensure that people actualize their web of gifts through relationship.

The truth is that we are born into both tribes and can move from one to the other, depending on the level of our fear. The times of genocide throughout history mark the extreme, malignant manifestation of the “Go away” tribe. Distorted by fear, it’s not enough just to say, “Go away.” For unbridled fear turns to anger, which normalized turns into prejudice and hate. Such deep, embedded fear dictates that we need to make sure that those who are different can’t return. And so, we exile them, jail them, hurt them, and in extremely ugly cases, persecute and kill them.

However, the times of enlightenment throughout history mark the extreme manifestation of the “Come, teach me” tribe, which through learning and wonder leads to eras of compassion and cooperation. Empowered by trust, curiosity turns into interdependence and a belief that we are more together than alone. When allowed to blossom, we realize that we need each other and our diversity of gifts to make life whole. This ethic is what gave rise to democracy in the first place. This is why America has grown so strong from welcoming immigrants for over two hundred years.

That we as a nation have moved through periods of isolationism and inclusion only shows how we as a people keep shifting between the two tribes. Our nation today has coagulated into these primary camps. For the moment, we seem to be heading into another period of isolationism and fear of those who are different.

I admit that I am of the “Come, teach me” tribe, at least until my fear overrides my better judgment. Though I always pray for our return to each other. And so, I believe it’s imperative that we educate our children to live according to the fundamental dynamic that all the spiritual traditions teach: that we are all parts of one indivisible whole, which love and suffering reveal. And while we come apart from time to time, like now, while we push each other away in our fear, the natural resting position of life on Earth is to join. So that we can release the life-force inherent in the biological, societal, and mystical fact that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Love, trust, courage, and the ability to listen are the agencies of heart that allow us to rejoin. These are the qualities that each soul has waiting within it like golden seeds to be watered by the strength of our kindness. This is the purpose of community: to water these seeds and to join and rejoin.

John Lewis Wouldn’t Invite Donald Trump To Visit Selma With Him

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) has made it very clear that he is not a fan of President-elect Donald Trump ― so much so that he wouldn’t even invite Trump to visit Selma, Alabama, with him.

“I would not invite him to come,” Lewis said during a wide-ranging interview with “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

In 1965, Lewis, a civil rights icon whose work led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of that year, was badly beaten on Edmund Pettus Bridge during Bloody Sunday. He often visits the city with politicians from both parties, and has even been there with Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush went to Selma with Lewis and others to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in 2015.

Lewis said on Sunday that he would not try to stop a Trump visit and that maybe the president-elect would leave Selma better off than when he came.

“Well, by going to Selma, like President Bush, President Clinton, President Obama, maybe he would learn something,” Lewis said. “Maybe he would get religion.”

Lewis and Trump have been sparring with each other since last week. On Friday, the civil rights icon said Trump is not a “legitimate president,” based on reports of Russian interference in the 2016 election. He added that he will not attend Trump’s inauguration, making it the first one he’s missed since his election to Congress in 1986.

Trump responded to Lewis via Twitter, saying the civil rights legend is “all talk, talk, talk ― no action.”

Lewis told “Meet The Press” host Chuck Todd that it would be “almost impossible” for him to work with Trump since he does not see the president-elect’s win as legitimate.

Later in the interview, Lewis said he agrees with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who proposed establishing a special committee to investigate allegations of Russian interference in the election.

Todd asked what, if anything, Trump could do to get Lewis to work with him.

“You know, I’ve had an opportunity to meet with every president since President Kennedy, except President Nixon. I met with President Nixon when he was out of the White House. And it’s painful. It is hard. It is difficult to see our country come to where it is today,” Lewis said.

“There’s a whole body of people in America today that believe there was a conspiracy, a deliberate, systematic effort to destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton and place this person in the White House,” Lewis continued. “There were outside forces.”

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

This Local News Segment Shows The Obamacare Danger Ahead For Republicans

Popular resistance to the repeal of the Affordable Care Act has begun, with the first signal that Republicans could face major political repercussions coming from the large Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado.

Congressman Mike Coffman, a Republican who represents the swing district there, planned a small event at a library to meet with constituents. He expected just a handful of people, but 150 individuals showed up. Most of them, according to local media reports, were present to plead with him not to go forward with an Obamacare repeal without a suitable replacement in place.

Coffman decided to let only four people into the room at a time, yielding images on social media that looked like this:

The local NBC 9 News report on the event was brutal for Coffman from start to finish, highlighting Berthie Ruoff, a breast cancer survivor who is worried she will be unable to buy insurance without the law’s protections.

“I’m going to potentially lose my health insurance. I’ve had a pre-existing condition, I’ve had breast cancer. What is going to happen to me?” she said with tears in her eyes.

With the help of local police, who put up caution tape near a side entrance, Coffman left the building minutes before the town hall meeting was scheduled to end.

“We were told at one point, everyone will get their time. And then he sneaks out six minutes early,” a woman at the meeting told NBC 9.

Coffman claimed in a statement to NBC 9 that he was limited by his reservation at the library.

“Unfortunately, we only reserved the room at the Aurora Central Library for 90 minutes, which is usually plenty of time to see everyone,” he said. “For those who were unable to see the congressman today, we apologize.”

Meanwhile, Coffman appears to be resolute in his commitment to repealing the landmark law. He penned an op-ed with the three other House Republicans from Colorado insisting that “full repeal” is the only way to solve the country’s health care problems. And the American Action Network, a conservative political action committee with ties to congressional GOP leadership, has announced it will spend $ 1.4 million on advertisements touting the Republicans’ plan to replace Obamacare in several Republican congressional districts, including Coffman’s.

The problem for Republicans is that their main objections to the ACA ― that deductibles and premiums are too high and networks are too narrow ― can really only be solved by a combination of reducing the growth of costs and providing further subsidies for coverage. Republicans in general have shown little willingness to spend more to help people pay for health care, but have instead argued that rolling back insurance regulations and unleashing the free market will do the trick. Without significant subsidies, though, the industry has no way of covering those with pre-existing conditions, which Republicans have promised any replacement will do.

President-elect Donald Trump has said that a replacement could come within hours of repeal, but as of yet, no replacement exists.

Many Republicans have also promised that people with pre-existing conditions, such as Berthie Ruoff, will still be able to purchase insurance once the law is overturned. But the ACA ended the past practice of discrimination based on medical history in part by enacting the individual mandate, which ensures that the insurance companies would get new customers to offset the cost of the sicker people it would have to cover. Republicans are dead set on repealing the individual mandate, which they view as government overreach.

The pushback in Aurora suggests Republicans may be in for a world of political pain as they push forward with repeal. It recalls a few other popular uprisings against Washington, all of them triggered by congressional efforts to make big changes to health care and entitlement programs. In the summer of 2009, hundreds of thousands of people swarmed town halls in opposition to Obamacare. In 2005, the nation loudly pushed back against GOP attempts to cut or privatize Social Security, contributing to the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006. In 1993, when President Bill Clinton tried to rewrite the rules for the health care system, the insurance industry was able to exploit popular fears of change and scuttle the effort. The failure contributed to the GOP takeover of Congress in 1994.

Super Fast Metabolism Diet

The desire to lose weight and stay fit is becoming more and more difficult to satisfy. After all, most restaurants have increased their portion sizes to the point where one entree often has an entire day’s worth of calories. If you go to McDonald’s and order a Happy Meal for your child, the cheeseburger inside used to be the cheeseburger that adults would order. It’s not just fast food places, though. The vast majority of eateries are using bigger and bigger plates. At the same time, the modern lifestyle is becoming less and less active. More and more jobs involve expertise with computers in some form or fashion. This means that more people are spending more of their work day seated at a chair, staring at a screen. When people come home from work, many of their entertainment forms (television, surfing the Net, playing video games) involve doing some more sitting. Getting outside and being active are pursuits that are becoming an endangered species. The good news is that finding ways to manage your weight and keep it at the level you want is not impossible. It starts with finding ways to boost the rate at which your body burns the fuel you put into it – in other words, the rate of your metabolism. When it comes to whether you lose or gain weight, there is just one simple formula: if you eat more calories than you burn through activity, you will gain weight. If you burn more calories than you eat, then you will lose weight. Finding ways to speed up your metabolism will help you come out on the right side of this equation more often than not. This book contains a guide to the types of food you should eat and types of food you should avoid. There are recipes, exercises and other tips to help you take charge of your metabolism. The advice in this book can help you change your life for the better. So let’s get started!

Across The U.S., Police Contracts Shield Officers From Scrutiny

By Reade Levinson

San Antonio, Texas, Jan 13 (Reuters) – In late 2013, a San Antonio police officer stood accused of handcuffing a woman in the rear of his police car and then raping her. The same officer had remained on the force despite prior sexual misconduct complaints and other brushes with the law.

So early in 2014, backed by the city council, City Manager Sheryl Sculley proposed reforms to thepolice union contract in the Texas city. She wanted to eliminate a clause that erased prior misconduct complaints from cops’ records, increase citizen participation in the complaint process, and end officers’ ability to forfeit vacation time rather than serve suspensions.

The San Antonio Police Officers Association’s response: It targeted Sculley with a $ 1 million advertising campaign, according to estimates by the manager’s office. The union ran full-page newspaper ads and placed billboards downtown claiming crime rates rose because she refused to fill open police positions. Police backers broadcast ads highlighting Sculley’s six-figure salary and created a Facebook page, Remove City Manager Sheryl Sculley.

“They were really trying to intimidate,” said Sculley. “I knew it would be one of the hardest things I would work on here in San Antonio.”

Mike Helle, the officers’ association president, said Sculley pitched the changes simply to ride a wave of protest over police. The contract ensures fair discipline, he said, and if anyone was on the attack, it was the manager. “Her tone was immediately aggressive,” he said.

In the end, after two years of bitter negotiations, the sides agreed to a contract capping salaries and benefits at rates manageable for the city. But it did not include Sculley’s disciplinary changes. “The bottom line is that we could not change the contract,” she said.

The episode is a telling snapshot of the power police unions flex across the United States, using political might to cement contracts that often provide a shield of protection to officers accused of misdeeds and erect barriers to residents complaining of abuse.

From city to city, union contracts have become just as crucial in governing departments as policemanuals and city charters. Yet those contracts are coming under scrutiny amid civil rights protests over alleged police abuses, including shootings of unarmed black subjects.

Reuters, examining the fine print of 82 police union contracts in large cities across the country, found a pattern of protections afforded the men and women in blue:

A majority of the contracts call for departments to erase disciplinary records, some after just six months, making it difficult to fire officers with a history of abuses. In 18 cities, suspensions are erased in three years or less. In Anchorage, Alaska, suspensions, demotions and disciplinary transfers are removed after two years.

Nearly half of the contracts allow officers accused of misconduct to access the entire investigative file – including witness statements, GPS readouts, photos, videos and notes from the internal investigation – before being interrogated.

Twenty cities, including San Antonio, allow officers accused of misconduct to forfeit sick leave or holiday and vacation time rather than serve suspensions.

Eighteen cities require an officer’s written consent before the department publicly releases documents involving prior discipline or internal investigations.

Contracts in 17 cities set time limits for citizens to file complaints about police officers – some as short as 30 days. Nine cities restrict anonymous complaints from being investigated.

Police supporters say the contract rules are common-sense protections.

“Our job isn’t to keep bad officers in this profession. Our job is to make sure that due process is given to the officers,” said Rick Weisman, director of labor services at the National Fraternal Order of Police. “If the agency’s got a case, make your case.”

But many law-enforcement veterans think the protections go too far.

“The balance has dramatically shifted to the creation of barriers to actual accountability that don’t serve the public good,” said Jonathan Smith, former chief of special litigation in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Over the last 40 years, cities have bargained away the power to discipline police officers, often in closed negotiation meetings with local unions. Historically, contracts covered salary, pensions and healthcare. Discipline was brought to the negotiating table in the 1980s, when cash-strapped cities gave more management control to unions rather than increase salaries.

“During recessions [the city] would give the union management rights in lieu of money,” said Robert Olson, chief inspector of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate in Ireland and former chief ofpolice in Minneapolis. “And when that happens, that’s when trouble starts.”

“We’re not talking about just one union contract,” he added. “We’re talking about incremental changes in contracts over years that cumulatively, suddenly, there’s all of these hoops, which makes it far more difficult for chiefs to sustain discipline.”

THE CASE IN COLUMBUS

Joseph Hines was in his junior year at Ohio State University studying agribusiness. On August 29, 2012, Hines and his two best friends were out celebrating the first day of their junior year. They were sitting on a bench joking about fantasy basketball when two police officers on bicycles pulled up and asked Hines for his ID, according to internal police documents and interviews with witnesses.

Hines said he didn’t have his ID. The male officer grabbed his arm, and Hines jerked it back. Then the female officer took out her handcuffs, and the two tackled him to the pavement.

A police car dashcam recorded Hines’ shouts. “Stop! Stop! Please!”

“Shut the f―- up!” an officer screamed. “Shut up! Get down!”

“Please, stop!” Hines cried. “I can’t breathe, stop!”

He lost consciousness, and then awoke on the sidewalk, surrounded now by at least 15 officers, with one eye swollen shut. Hines was hospitalized for three days, diagnosed with facial contusions, a concussion, mild brain damage and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, according to medical records he provided to Reuters.

Hines was charged with six crimes, including resisting arrest and underage drinking. Police contended he was drinking in public – a can of Four Loko alcohol was found nearby. Hines says the can wasn’t his, and the charges for open container and public intoxication were dropped.

Ultimately, he pleaded guilty only to littering and paid a $ 100 fine. “I wasn’t charged with assault,” Hines said. “My face didn’t match up to my charges.”

Department records show a history of misconduct complaints against the two Columbus officersinvolved, Thomas DeWitt and Debra Paxton.

Prior to this incident, citizens filed 40 complaint allegations against DeWitt and 14 against Paxton. Those numbers should have “raised eyebrows and raised questions,” said Norm Stamper, former chief of the Seattle Police Department and author of a book outlining police reforms.

The details of many of those cases are missing because Columbus files are routinely destroyed every four years. “We shred them in various cycles,” said Jonathan Schirg, the management analyst in charge of records retention in the Columbus Division of Police. The retention schedule is approved by the Records Commission, Ohio Historical Society and Auditory of State.

Wes Phillips, the attorney for both officers, declined to comment.

The officers were never suspended in the Hines case. The department began an administrative investigation into their “response to resistance” – a new term used by the Columbus Division ofPolice to describe police use of force. The investigating sergeant was “unable to resolve” the allegations because Hines declined to be interviewed, as instructed by his attorney, records show.

Mike Miller, Hines’ attorney, said he would advise any client not to talk to police in the midst of a case. “The police are the ones that brought these charges against him,” he said.

After interviews with 15 officers and two paramedics, police brass determined the misconduct allegations were unfounded. That ruling came as a jury in September 2015 found DeWitt used excessive force and awarded Hines $ 30,000 in damages for his injuries. Hines appealed the award, which did not cover his attorney’s fees, and the case is pending at the Sixth Circuit Court.

Like many police departments, Columbus has a procedure in place to identify patterns of behavior and recommend counseling, called the Employee Action Review System.

The union contract prohibits complaints deemed by the department to be unfounded from factoring into discipline. In the department’s view, there is no just cause to discipline without a proven allegation, Columbus Division of Police Chief Kimberley Jacobs said in an email.

The review committee recommended Officer Paxton be monitored and given remedial training after 13 investigations in six months were opened into her use of mace, records show. In July 2014, she took a 30-minute course in handcuffing techniques.

Since the review, the department has investigated eight additional incidents involving Paxton’s use of mace and force.

Another Columbus case shows how officers can build up mounting complaints and stay on the force – until even more serious events occur.

Last September, Columbus officer Bryan Mason shot and killed 13-year-old Tyre King, who was carrying a BB gun. Mason had been the subject of more than 60 investigations, including 25 incidents in which citizens required medical attention, and was involved in two additional fatal shootings in 2009 and 2012, according to internal police documents obtained by Reuters.

Mason has been moved to an investigative assignment and is no longer on patrol, according to a spokesperson for the department. His lawyer, Phillips, declined to comment on specifics but said: “Columbus is a very well trained police force.”

Jason Pappas, president of the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police, said the union contract does not skew investigations or limit accountability. “If every officer started getting disciplined or moved because somebody started filing complaints, hell, the whole neighborhood would start filing complaints,” he said.

CASES CLOSED

In 15 cities reviewed by Reuters, few citizen complaints were sustained by police internal review boards. In Tacoma, Washington, for instance, just 10 percent of 215 complaint allegations filed against police were sustained between January 2015 and March 2016.

Assistant Chief Kathy McAlpine said complaints are often not sustained for lack of independent witnesses. “It is the complainant’s word versus the officer,” she said.

In Chicago, a Reuters analysis of 1,000 civilian complaints sent to Internal Affairs in 2016 shows just one resulted in disciplinary action.

One Chicago officer, Raymond Piwnicki – the subject of reports by The Invisible Institute, a Chicago journalistic organization focused on civil rights – accumulated at least 89 misconduct allegations in his 18-year career, files reviewed by Reuters show. Of those, four were sustained and one of the four, fighting with another officer, resulted in punishment, complaint records and internal investigative files show.

In one sustained case in 2005, Piwnicki exchanged words with a couple as they boarded an elevator, telling the man, “Shut up, you f―-ing coon, you f―-ing cluck, I do whatever the f―- I want to,” according to a report by the Department’s Office of Professional Standards. The argument began after Piwnicki pushed the wife out of the way so he and a friend could board first, the OPS investigation found. The report said Piwnicki attempted to punch the man.

Piwnicki denied wrongdoing in a statement to OPS, but the department sustained all six allegations against him.

“Piwnicki has clearly exhibited a pattern of using profane and derogatory language in his contact with citizens,” an investigator wrote. In 2013, Piwnicki was promoted to detective. He declined comment.

FILES DESTROYED

In many cities, prior disciplinary cases simply disappear from the record, thanks to the contract.

Honolulu’s contract specifies “derogatory” materials in an employee’s file – including disciplinary records – be destroyed after four years. Files may be “temporarily withheld from destruction” if officers are involved in pending litigation, said Sarah Yoro, a Honolulu Police spokeswoman. “Files are normally shredded or burned,” she said.

In Baton Rouge, complaints of sexual misconduct or harassment are removed from an officer’s record and destroyed after five years. The department did not respond to interview requests.

Destroying data that could signal wider problems can hurt the police department as well as the public, said Smith, the former DOJ official. Officers who become involved in shootings or other serious violations frequently have faced less serious allegations in the past. By limiting the use of past complaints, he said, union contracts can render institutions unable to correct their own behavior.

Glendale, Arizona, with a population of more than a quarter million residents, is among nine cities where the union contract restricts anonymous complaints from being investigated.

“We want the complainant to come in,” said Justin Harris, a Glendale police officer and union representative. “There’s a form, and it lets the taxpayer know that if you’re knowingly and intentionally making a false statement, you could be prosecuted.”

Glendale police defend their other contract protections. Among them: Officers under investigation get to see video footage that isn’t made available to citizens. Incidents involving police use of force can be emotional, and looking at video footage can help officers refresh their memory, policesay.

“That way they know all the facts, there’s no witch hunting,” Harris said.

By contrast, he said, “You don’t want to let a witness review footage of something they may or may not have seen, because if they review that footage, then they’re going to come back and just tell you what they just saw. So that’s not an independent statement.”

In eight cities, contracts allow officers to refuse to testify before civilian oversight boards. In Las Vegas, the union contract requires a court order to access an employee’s file.

Detective Steve Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, said the policy is “consistent with public and private sector employment practices.”

Some contracts afford second chances when officers are found to have alcohol in their system.

In Chicago, officers who are breathalyzed on the job and register a blood-alcohol content of 0.021 through 0.039 – close to the 0.05 cutoff for a driving-while-intoxicated citation in Illinois – are sent home and tested again the next day. “If the return-to-duty test reveals an alcohol level of .00, the Officer may return to duty and shall not be subject to discipline based on the initial test result,” the contract states.

Toledo is equally forgiving. “Any on-duty officer who has under a .04 BAC shall not be subject to discipline but will be required to go home,” the contract says. “This officer may utilize any accumulated compensatory or vacation time to cover their absence.”

Officer Daniel Wagner, president of the Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association, said the language was recently added “to be proactive in addressing a common problem seen in policing nationwide” involving officers and alcohol. But, he said, the force has not had to put the provision into action.

UNIQUE BENEFITS, PUBLIC BARRIERS

In Milwaukee, officers can be paid during disciplinary suspensions – a benefit not bestowed on other city workers. “It is recognized that financial losses are not typically borne by the offending member alone, but by his or her family as well,” the police contract states.

Officers are also paid during lengthy internal affairs investigations. One Milwaukee police officer, Sonthana Rajaphoumi, was on paid suspension for more than five months after being charged in April 2016 with three felony counts of causing mental harm to a child and soliciting prostitution. He allegedly offered $ 200 for sex with a 16-year-old girl and tried to court another 15-year-old girl. He was fired in October.

Rajaphoumi’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment.

A department spokesperson said officers stay on payroll until found guilty by the court system or an internal investigation, processes that can take years.

Columbus’ contract mandates that complaints be submitted in writing within 60 days of an incident. Beyond that, officers typically are not required to participate in the investigation, and their name doesn’t appear on the complaint. At least 25 allegations of misconduct, or nearly 5 percent of all complaints, were not investigated in Columbus due to the 60-day clause, a 2015 report said.

“It’s very difficult for a supervisor to investigate outside of 60 days,” said Jennifer Knight, commander of the Columbus Internal Affairs Bureau.

Like most union contracts, the Columbus agreement allows officers access to all investigative materials. If new evidence is discovered, officers can pause an interview, step out with their lawyer and review the material.

Complainants are not given the same access in the city, where a string of police-involved shootings has sparked citizen marches.

THE CASE IN SAN ANTONIO

In San Antonio, the case that helped spur the city manager to action involved officer Jackie Neal, arrested in November 2013 on charges he raped a woman in the rear seat of his police vehicle. Later that night, released from jail, Neal returned to the home where the woman was staying and was arrested again.

Three months earlier, the police chief found that Neal, supervisor of the department’s youth program, had had sex with a teenage girl participating in the program.

The chief suspended him for three days, but Neal never lost a dime in pay or a day off patrol: The union contract allowed him to serve the suspension using vacation days.

Helle, the union president, said he too wanted Neal off the force, viewing him at an outlier. “I told the chief, you need to watch this guy,” he said. Helle has a daughter, and he said Neal’s actions deeply troubled him.

Neal declined to comment.

Neal had two prior complaints of sexual misconduct, court documents show. A woman alleged he put his hands inside her panties, lifted up her shirt and felt her breasts during a routine traffic stop in November 2006. Neal was accused of digitally penetrating another woman in February 2007. Neither complaint was sustained by the department.

Police Chief William McManus declined interview requests. In a deposition in the civil case against Neal, McManus said he “had a stern conversation” with Neal after the sexual encounter with the teenager in the police youth program and felt confident allowing him to continue performing his duties unsupervised.

McManus said he did not see a connection between the teen sex incident and Neal’s prior complaints. “These incidents, to me, were not – not sexually related, but they were what I considered to be a very, very aggressive officer in trying to find drugs,” he said.

The officer had other brushes with the law. In February 2007, Neal’s stepdaughter called policeafter he allegedly punched a door and began throwing clothes and a suitcase. Two months later, Neal’s wife, Debbie, called 911 saying he was threatening to kill himself with a gun.

“He rarely raised his voice, but when he got mad it was scary,” said Debbie Neal, who divorced Neal in 2009 but defended him in court. “I’d never seen him like that.”

In November 2013, after the alleged rape in his police car, Neal pleaded no contest to improper sexual activity with a person in custody. He was fined $ 5,000 and sentenced to 14 months behind bars. As part of the plea, he agreed to surrender his officer certification.

Neal’s sentence was shortened by five months through a state program allowing credit for work and education.

In April 2015, San Antonio approved a $ 500,000 settlement with the victim.

Yet such cases are not enough to spur change. The city manager, Sculley, said the police union wouldn’t budge on her demand that it cede control over discipline, and city council leaders urged her to yield in order to settle a new contract.

“There is so much that still needs to be changed in the contract,” Sculley said. “I lost the political support of the council to continue to press on that issue.”

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

There’s An Egg in my Soup

There’s An Egg in my Soup

Five years in the Polish wilderness. Queues for groceries, unfathomable bus timetables, inexplicable traditions and truly bizarre soup – this is Poland in the mid-1990s, where Tom Galvin innocently went as a trainee teacher. Without a word of Polish, he is plunged into a strange and rapidly changing culture, as the country shakes off its troubled and complex past and faces the challenges of being a part of modern Europe. Tom spent five years dealing with long and freezing winters, lack of good food, loneliness and hardship, as he discovered the misery as well as the joy of Polish life. He returned in 2007, to find surprising changes to the country that had been his home for the first years of his working life. An interesting and amusing account of living and working abroad, which documents a unique period of Polish history.

This Man Is Writing Ridiculously Hilarious Gay Porn About ‘Domald Tromp’

Author Chuck Tingle is at it again with his hilarious gay erotica that regularly makes light of the current social and political climate.

Tingle previously made waves with works like Pounded By The Gay Color-Changing Dress in response to #TheDress that broke the internet and Pounded By The Pound: Turned Gay By The Socioeconomic Implications of Britain Leaving The European Union in the aftermath of Brexit.

For his latest book, Tingle features a character that might seem more than vaguely familiar.

Behold: Domald Tromp Pounded In The Butt By The Handsome Russian T-Rex Who Also Peed On His Butt And Then Blackmailed Him With The Videos Of His Butt Getting Peed On.

In an email using highly unorthodox language and grammar, Tingle, who is 45 years old and lives in Billings, Montana, told The Huffington Post: “It is important to remember [the book] is about DOMALD TROMP… This is a notorious real estate man from a timeline very close to this one but he is a different scoundrel.”

The author, who told The Huffington Post he’s a “retired doctor of holistic massage” and who has 108 self-published books for sale on Amazon, says that the intent of all of his books is to “prove love.” He adds, “Every moment is so important even this one right now I would like us all to seize that and do something powerful with it.”

Tingle says he’s not worried about legal action from the notoriously litigious president-elect. “I do not write stories about Donald Trump, I write about DOMS TROMP or DONS TRUMP, who do not exist on this timeline,” he says. The author, who says his sexual orientation is “bud on bud,” also noted that, “I am very careful about my privacy as a doctor. I do not even upload my own books — they are uploaded by son’s online friend, so it would be hard to track me as [Chuck Tingle] — maybe like [Banksy].”

Tingle has written about a figure resembling the president-elect before in President Domald Loch Ness Tromp Pounds America’s Butt and we’re guessing he has more up he sleeve. Good thing, too. We need it now more than ever.

Four Uncommon Ways to Clear Your Mind and Make Big Decisions

What are some tips for battling decision-fatigue? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Jenny Blake, Author of PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, on Quora.

Decision-fatigue refers to the phenomenon that, like willpower, our ability to make decisions throughout the day diminishes without proper recharging. When mid-Pivot and asking life’s biggest questions, we are often overwhelmed by smaller decisions and things that might not have registered on our radar in the past. Or conversely, we’re so bogged down by small day-to-day decisions that we don’t have the space to ask bigger Pivot questions about what we really want and what next steps would resonate most.

To refresh your mind, I recommend the following:

  • Don’t ask the same giant questions every day (ie: Should I quit my job?). Give yourself a period of time where you don’t have to decide at all, perhaps while you’re researching options. Revisit the decision at specific intervals of your choosing, but not on a daily monkey-mind basis.
  • Create routines for as much as you can in your life – morning routines, scheduling exercise for the same recurring days/times, evening wind down rituals. What recharges you? The more you can create routines around these things, the less you will find yourself debating what to do when throughout the day (gobbling up precious mental bandwidth).
  • Write your questions down.
  • Go with your gut! We actually do know the answer to more than we think – on decisions large and small. If you find yourself debating unproductively, ask: what does my gut say?

What It Means To “Do Better.”

2017-01-11-1484172797-8552427-ScreenShot20170111at5.12.50PM.png

I’m going to give you a brief window into my childhood for a moment, horrible bangs and neon aplenty. It was the 80’s after all. This is a special picture, am I right? Back to the story…

2017-01-11-1484172716-6121614-ScreenShot20170111at5.11.24PM.png

When I was growing up my mom struggled with her weight. To be honest I think she struggled with it her whole life but I can only speak to the years after I was born-duh. I have vivid memories of my mother being on some kind of a “diet” throughout my entire childhood. I remember her going to Weight Watchers meetings once a week to weigh herself. And I remember her buying Sweatin’ to the Oldies videos and trying to do the moves along with her. Richard Simmons really was something, wasn’t he? I remember cabbage soup diets and all sorts of different “miracle pills” that were finally going to take the weight off. I’m sure it won’t come as a shock to you but even after all of the attempts, the weight never came off and she remained uncomfortable in her body.

When I think of that time and all of the weight-loss gimmicks she tried what I remember the most is that none of them worked. She may have lost a few pounds here or there but it always came back because they were short-term solutions.

I know that my mother didn’t like the way she looked or felt and that is the worst way to feel. I also know that she poured money into fruitless endeavours and programs filled with empty promises because she didn’t want to continue to feel like crap. I also know what it’s like to feel like that myself. And I’d be willing to bet that if you’re reading this right now you or someone you know has struggled with the same thing.

I’m pretty sure my “healthy living seed” was planted around that time. I didn’t understand it then but watching my mother struggle all those years was subliminally propelling me into a career of health and wellness. I’m certain a huge part of the reason that I now make my living teaching people about nutrition and healthy living has to do with watching her have such difficulty with her weight and eating well. I figured there had to be a better way to do this. It shouldn’t be hard or restrictive to live a healthy life. You shouldn’t need to weigh out powders and pills in order to feel good. You should just be able to Do Better.

What does Doing Better mean?

Doing better basically means that you’re improving on what you’re doing now. Sounds pretty simple, right? That’s because it is simple.

Healthy living isn’t black and white. It’s not a one size fits all scenario either. It is a huge spectrum of things that you can change in order to achieve your idea of “healthy living.” And that’s the part that I think is pretty great. There are so many different things you can do to Do Better. Simple things. Things that won’t break the bank. What kinds of things you may ask? Well, let me show you:

Use almond milk in your coffee instead of cream

Make your own chicken stock

Ditch the fruit juice for water

Eat a vegetarian meal once a week

Eat a healthy breakfast everyday

Take the stairs at work

Make your own pizza instead of ordering in

Stop drinking pop

Cut out dairy

Stop eating things from boxes

Cut red meat down to once a week

Switch to spelt or rice pasta

Buy a reusable glass water bottle instead of plastic bottles

This list is literally just scratching the surface of what you can do. Once you start thinking about it I’m sure you can come up with dozens more ways you can Do Better in your home and with your diet. And once you begin to Do Better consistently, you will start to see results.

But will I see the results I want if I’m just doing better?

Oh my goodness, the answer is a resounding yes! Let me ‘splain: What if you decided to take the stairs at work instead of taking the elevator and you did that for 3 months? You wouldn’t look like Arnold Schwarzenegger but you would improve your cardiovascular health. And what if you switched from ice cream to banana “nice” cream? And what if you used 1 sugar in your coffee instead of 2? And what if you compounded all of those actions over the course of a year 6 months. Would you look like a fitness competitor? Hell no, but you’d better believe you’d be a healthier version of yourself. And that’s what we all want, isn’t it?

Stop making it difficult. Stop making this an all or nothing kind of situation. Do Better than you are doing right now. And then Do Better than that. Because you’re a rock star and deserve to love your life.

If you aren’t quite sure where to start Doing Better, check out my Back to Basics recipe book. It’s full of delicious and easy recipes for stock, dressings, marinades and more!

Law Firm Advising Trump On Business Conflicts Named ‘Russian Law Firm Of The Year’

WASHINGTON ― Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, the corporate law firm that is advising Donald Trump on how to handle his massive business conflicts before and during his time in office, received industry recognition last year for its work in Russia.

Chambers & Partners, a London-based publication that ranks law firms and lawyers around the world for business clients, gave the firm the “Russian law firm of the year” award for its work in the country.

The firm acknowledged the award in a news release last May. An editor for Chambers & Partners did not respond to a request for comment on the award’s significance.

According to the Morgan Lewis website, the firm’s Moscow office has a healthy practice, with more than 40 lawyers helping corporate clients navigate the Russian legal landscape.

The president-elect has repeatedly said he has no dealings with Russia, and on Wednesday morning, he used his Twitter platform to reassure Americans that the country has no “leverage” over him. He reiterated that position during his long-awaited news conference on business conflicts later in the day.

“I have no deals,” Trump said. “I have no loans and no dealings. We could make deals in Russia very easily, if we wanted to. I just don’t want to because I think that would be a conflict.”

Morgan Lewis’ ties to politicians span across the aisle. Last year, a partner at the firm, James Hamilton, was recruited to help Hillary Clinton pick a running mate, according to The New York Times. The lawyer also helped prior Democratic presidential candidates, including Barack Obama, select running mates.

Ronald Tenpas, another partner at the firm, joined the landing team at the Department of Justice as part of Trump’s transition efforts.

The firm also once employed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), at the time an appellate lawyer that was considered a rising star among his peers for his experience arguing before the Supreme Court.

Relationships That Have Roots are the Anchors in Our Lives

By Carolyn Massiah
UCF Forum columnist

The view in my backyard is a conservation area full of various types of trees. As the seasons pass, the trees lose their leaves and even some of their branches, but the trees remain in large part due to their sturdy roots.

To the side of my house is a concrete light pole. It doesn’t have any leaves and branches, obviously, but it is more susceptible to being blown down during a violent storm because it lacks the strong roots that mature trees have to anchor them through a storm.

When I compare and contrast the tree and the pole, I know I would much rather be a tree.

Both trees and light poles stand above the blanket of shrubs and bushes below. However, this is where the similarities end.

Many light poles are inorganic entities of concrete or metal, created through some form of human intervention. The shape and size in which these poles are created will forever be their shape and size as inorganic entities will not change during their existence unless there is additional intervention.

Trees, on the other hand, are organic. They are living organisms that continually change. They will lose and gain leaves and branches but they will also grow and mature throughout their existence. Continual growth and development is what I want for my own life. This is why I would rather be a tree than a light pole.

Unfortunately, positive growth sometimes must come from negative changes. Each year trees weather the change of seasons. With those changes in season, leaves come and they go and sometimes there may be seasons when the trees may not have any leaves at all on their branches.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that become attached to you as much as leaves are attached to branches. However, as the seasons change in our lives those people may disappear. Sometimes it seems several disappear at once and you are left bare much like trees in winter. For whatever reasons, those individuals were only meant to be in your life for a season. Yes, it hurts when those who you thought were going to stay forever leave your life before you are ready, but it is the nature of our organic lives.

Unfortunately, you never know how strong any branch will be until it is tested in the most violent of storms. Some branches appear thick and sturdy while they may actually be hollow or rotten to the core. If you step out on the branch for support because of its sturdy appearance, you might be disappointed and shocked when that branch does not support you but breaks and hurts you instead.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that we have relied upon and with whom we have built a long-term relationship. We have truly let them into our lives. However, as the weight of whatever burden you need bared by them increases, that friend gives under the load and breaks away from you in a permanent and irrevocable manner. Yes, it hurts but just as leaves come for a reason during a season, branches are there for those life-long lessons that we will take with us long after the branches have broken and been swept away. That is the nature of our organic lives.

So based on this, you might now be wondering why I would choose to be a tree instead of a pole. One word: roots!

Because trees are organic living creatures their roots continue to grow and strengthen as the tree grows and matures. When a storm comes, the roots anchor trees and allow trees to bend but not break in the storm.

Poles do not have that same anchor support. That is why we see more poles than trees down after severe hurricanes.

The same can be said for our own lives. Think about those individuals in your life that have been your anchor and support through the good and the bad. Often, much like a tree’s roots, those individuals do all of their work out of the view of others with no need of public acknowledgement. They are the blessings that we cannot overlook in our lives.

After comparing and contrasting the two, if I had to choose I would rather be a tree if it means that I will continue to have the blessings of roots just waiting to support me and feed me as I work to develop and mature throughout my existence.

Jimmy Carter Rates His Presidency And Reflects On ‘Gratifying’ Post-Presidential Years

As 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter remains proud of his administration’s efforts and accomplishments during his four years in office in the late 70s. But, as the 92-year-old told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” it’s actually his post-presidential years that have been most gratifying.

“When I was president of the most powerful and influential nation on earth, I had more total influence over peace and progress and things like that,” Carter acknowledges in the above clip. “But the last 35 years since I’ve left the White House has been the most challenging and interesting and adventurous and unpredictable and gratifying times of my life.”

Through the nonpartisan Carter Center, both the former president and first lady have focused fiercely on human rights, working to advance peace and health worldwide.

“We’ve dealt with literally millions of individual people in the tiny villages all over the world, and we treat people for diseases,” Carter explains.

Though this aspect of the Carters’ work has been credited with helping to practically eradicate Guinea worm disease, the former president’s legacy in the White House has been debated, particularly with reference to the much-televised hostage crisis of 1979-1980 and the slow recovery of the U.S. economy following the mid-70s recession. Given the harsh judgment and the fact that the Reagan era emerged after Carter’s presidency, Oprah asks the moderate Democrat how he looks back on his time in Washington.

“With gratitude and, I’d say, an adequate modicum of satisfaction,” Carter says. “In this book [A Full Life], I describe the things that we actually accomplished for good. That won’t be reversed. And the things that I tried and didn’t quite accomplish because of change in circumstances and so forth. But, I did the best I could. As my vice president said, ‘We told the truth, we obeyed the law and we kept the peace.’”

“SuperSoul Sunday” returns with new episodes this spring.

Another presidential reflection:

Why Jimmy Carter says he could “absolutely not” be president today

Monica Crowley Book No Longer For Sale So She Can ‘Source’ Material

Usually when a book is published and sold globally, it’s been well-sourced and revised many times.

But Monica Crowley’s 2012 book may have missed a few steps, Andrew Kaczynski of CNN KFile suggested in a tweet Tuesday.

Crowley’s book, What The (Bleep) Just Happened, has come under fire recently, accused by CNN KFile of nearly “50 examples of plagiarism from numerous sources, including the copying with minor changes of news articles, other columnists, think tanks, and Wikipedia.”

That’s not good for any author, but the conservative pundit faces greater scrutiny because President-elect Donald Trump has picked her to serve as senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council.

HarperCollins is taking Crowley’s book down until adjustments can be made, CNN reports. The publisher told the news outlet:

“The book, which has reached the end of its natural sales cycle, will no longer be offered for purchase until such time as the author has the opportunity to source and revise the material.”

Crowley has also been accused of plagiarizing parts of her 2000 Ph.D. dissertation called “Clearer Than Truth: Determining and Preserving Grand Strategy: The Evolution of American Policy Toward the People’s Republic of China Under Truman and Nixon,” according to reports from Politico and CNN.

Politico wrote that “in some instances, Crowley footnoted her source but did not identify with quotation marks the text she was copying directly. In other instances, she copied text or heavily paraphrased with no attribution at all.”

But Trump’s team has defended Crowley, saying in a statement to CNN that “any attempt to discredit Monica is nothing more than a politically motivated attack that seeks to distract from the real issues facing this country.”

HuffPost has reached out to HarperCollins for more information and will update this piece accordingly.

A Letter To My High School Years

I walked through my old high school today. It was kind of like playing an old video game where you suddenly remember the levels and maps and bosses along the way. And no, I’m not just saying that because I’ve been playing Modern Warfare Remastered like a fiend lately.

I’m halfway through my first season as a wrestling coach at my old high school, and I see myself in all the boys on the team. I see my anger in their mannerisms when something doesn’t go right in a match. I see myself in their eyes as they dart around nervously before a match. And I see myself in their chatter when they get rowdy in the back of the bus listening to “Last Resort” by Papa Roach (horribly depressing song by the way).

It’s a mirror, you know. Their t-shirts in 20-degree weather and buzz cuts and wide eyes before matches. The back-and-forth banter about whether a move is legal or not against the sounds of rubber shoes stubbing into the mat.

They are alive. They are here. They’re perfectly in the moment. Boys being boys.

I remember those days. The days when I was scared to death of walking into the cafeteria, fearful I’d have nobody to sit with. The days where everything seemed like the end of the world. The days where every experience was new and I met freedom for the first time.

There’s so much pain in these memories. There was hardly a day without any drama. From the two-a-days of Freshman year football to the sun-soaked evenings of my last semester. Because I was experiencing so many things for the first time, I reacted accordingly. Pure ecstasy for the good stuff and frightful horror for the other.

I learned there had to be limits on what I could feel. I’ve hardly burned as bright since.

Maybe that’s a sad thing, but I’ve protected myself from a lot of pain by doing that. Maybe that’s why I’m caught up walking down the halls of my old high school. Because it reminds me of a distant time when I was alive, and here, and burning brighter than the sun on a summer day.

I’m just a shadow of myself, now.

High school. This is my ode to you. To those wacky teachers with the long hair and corny one-liners. To the arrogant kids who played lacrosse and paired long Nike socks with dirty vans. To the former heartthrobs and homecoming queens who currently spend their time wandering around Fed Hill. To those wonderful friday night lights and the crowds that would flock like moths to them. To the togas, and the dances, and those people in the back who used to shout “Don’t Stop Believing” at the top of their lungs near the end of the night.

To the kids who weren’t seen by anyone. To the teachers who pulled me aside just to know if I was okay. To the old gym with the light dangling from the ceiling during wrestling matches. To my coaches who are still there years later. To the girl with the locker next to me who was beautiful but ugly on the inside. To that piece of wood, or plastic, or whatever the hell it is that has my name on it way up near the ceiling in the gym.

To a scared, but brave boy just trying to figure it all out.

These are my words for you.

So here I am, walking these halls yet again. There’s the cafeteria. There’s my German Teacher’s room. There’s where I used to watch my girlfriend sing for Chorus.

The memories haunt me, or comfort me, depending on how I look.

Through it all they’re just reminding me of how I used to be. And for a second, if only for a moment, I am that scared, brave boy all over again.

Cecile Richards: ‘Women Are Absolutely Not Going Without A Fight’

In a recent segment on Christiane Amanpour’s CNN show, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards addressed the GOP’s plan to defund the women’s health organization

In true Richards fashion, she reminded Amanpour and the entire country that American women will not go down without a fight when it comes to their right to access basic health care.

“It’s really a problem when politicians put their politics ahead of women’s health care in America,” Richards said in the segment, later adding: “The access to not only to Planned Parenthood services but to women’s health care is very much at risk.”

By defunding Planned Parenthood ― which offers many (many) more services than just abortion ― the GOP is effectively threatening 2.5 million people’s access to care every single year.

Richards explained to Amanpour:

What we’re talking about now, in fact, and what Paul Ryan — Speak Ryan — said the other day is now they’re going to end access to Planned Parenthood preventive care. That means birth control services, cancer screenings, well-woman visits… As a result of the work [Planned Parenthood] has done, we’re at a 30-year low for unintended pregnancy in America. The crazy thing is, Christiane, about this new effort to end that access to family planning at Planned Parenthood, it is the very thing that is reducing unintended pregnancy and the need for abortion in the United States.

Richards added that the women’s health organization has seen a 900 percent increase in women trying to get IUDs because they are concerned they might lose access to birth control coverage if the GOP repeals Obamacare. “Women in this country are absolutely not going without a fight and the majority is with us,” she said.

She ended the segment by making it clear  that access to health care should not be about political party: “This is not a partisan issue, the women who come to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings or family planning services — they’re of all political parties, they’re of every walk of life.”

The trick to finding balance

2017-01-09-1483921667-6153980-Screenshot20170108at1.58.54PM.png

Balance is the Holy Grail of 21st century living.

Nobody sought balance back in the 1800s or even the 1950s. Back in the Old Days people sought to cultivate traits like virtue (huh?), patience, forgiveness, altruism, objectivity and a kind temperament.

Men worked in the world. Women worked at home. Balance was an unspoken fact of life. Only accountants and tightrope walkers in the circus actually worried about it consciously.

Nowadays balance is a big deal. Why? Because we’re so freakin’ out of balance.

Whole fields of scientific study have arisen from our imbalance. Food scientists weigh in on the proper balance of fruits, dairy, vegetables and proteins to consume on a daily basis. And a fat lot of good that’s done us. We’re more gi-normous than ever.

Sixty years ago kids walked to school, ran everywhere and played outdoors until dark. Adults did a lot of physical work. In 1950 only 10 percent of Americans were obese. Not anymore.

Seventy years ago we ate nourishing whole foods, unprocessed grains and cereals, butter, whole eggs, meats, fish and poultry and there were no organic sections in the stores because everything already was organic.

Not anymore.

Now 80 percent of all calories consumed by Americans come from refined, processed, GMO-laden foods filled with sugar, salt, trans-fats and artificial ingredients.

To balance this out we go to the gym, which–considering that 70 percent of us over 20 are now officially overweight and/or obese–apparently doesn’t balance the scales at all.

We worry about balancing work and home life–although I just looked up the average number of hours Americans work per week and, having done so, now have no idea what the hell everybody’s complaining about. Apparently Americans work an average of 34.4 hours per week. Okay – add five hours a week commuting (including stops for a latte and scone) and we’re almost at a 40-hour-work week. But who are these people? Where are they? I don’t know anyone who works that little!

Fortunately, I’m self-employed and only work about 60 hours a week. And I do so from home. Which means I automatically have the Balance Work and Home Life thing solved no matter what.

Gender balance–now there’s a biggie. Women STILL aren’t being paid equal wages for equal work in the US, women STILL only account for 19.4 percent of legislators and a many-times bankrupt, many-times married, morally disheveled, ill-spoken, ill-prepared, boorish male with a ferocious ego and no public service experience whatsoever can STILL beat the most polite, erudite, qualified political candidate to ever step up to a podium if she happens to be a she.

Yes–balance is a BIG deal in our world because there’s so damn little of it.

But as I was getting up from my meditation pillow this morning, feeling all glow-y and balanced and content, it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps the reason we’re still struggling to establish balance on the outside is because we haven’t found balance individually on the inside yet.

Living in physical bodies, this isn’t surprising. Despite what mysticism and science tell us to the contrary, despite all that talk in church about the Holy Spirit and the soul, most of us fully believe we’re physical beings dwelling in a physical world. So a belief that contentment and a certain degree of happiness can be achieved through the balance of our physical activities isn’t illogical. It’s just that it doesn’t work.

And the reason it doesn’t work is because the physical world isn’t reliable. Life is, by nature, mutable. Situations and people change. You can have a 401K, money in the bank, and a house in the burbs and still lose it all. You can sign a marriage contract in blood and still end up divorced. Accidents happen. People die. Pets run away. Children get sick. Hurricanes, floods, tornedoes and earthquakes level whole cities.

The most balanced, orderly, clock-work regime in the world can go tits up in a heartbeat. That’s life.

Inner balance on the other hand, once actually established, is unshakable.

It’s the “once actually established” part that puts most people off, I think. With our focus fixed on the world circus, absorbed by the trials of our own tumultuous lives, seeking outside solutions, we believe we don’t have time for such pastimes as meditation. But if we genuinely knew it was a scientifically reliable answer to all the unhappiness and flailing around we do … ?

If we genuinely knew that all the answers to all the questions in our hearts lay within us … if we genuinely knew that peace would prevail on Earth once we located it within our own minds through meditation … wouldn’t we go for it?

Wouldn’t we?

And if not … why not?

There’s a one-word answer: EGO. But it’ll take more than one blog to address that story.

St. Jude Heart Devices Get Cyber Security Updates After Probe Into Hack Vulnerability

By Jim Finkle

(Reuters) – Abbott Laboratories said on Monday it has begun releasing cyber security updates for its St. Jude heart devices some five months after the U.S. government launched a probe into claims they were vulnerable to potentially life-threatening hacks.

Abbott announced the updates as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Safety Communication advising patients and physicians to keep using the company’s implanted cardiac devices following the updates.

The FDA confirmed claims that cyber “vulnerabilities” could allow a hacker to remotely access St. Judge medical devices, but said there have been no reports of patients harmed by the vulnerabilities.

The updates will automatically be pushed out to St. Jude home monitors that enable doctors to track their performance.

Doctors and patients have been waiting for action from the FDA and St. Jude since August when short-selling firm Muddy Waters and cyber security firm MedSec Holdings claimed the implantedheart devices were riddled with potentially lethal security bugs.

They warned of two primary hacks: One that could cause implanted devices to pace at potentially dangerous rates and one that drains the batteries. The agency said it would continue to assess new information concerning the devices and alert the public if it recommends further changes.

“The FDA conducted an assessment of the benefits and risks of using the Merlin@home Transmitter, and has determined that the health benefits to patients from continued use of the device outweigh the cybersecurity risks,” the agency said.

Merlin is used with its implantable pacemakers and defibrillator devices.

When Muddy Waters went public with the allegations in August, it also disclosed it was shorting St. Jude Medical, which was preparing to sell itself to Abbott.

Muddy Waters said it believed that news of the vulnerabilities could cause the $ 25 billion deal to fall apart, but Abbott last week closed the acquisition of St. Jude, one of the world’s biggest makers of implantable cardiac devices,

St. Jude filed a lawsuit against San Francisco-based Muddy Waters, Miami-based MedSec and individuals affiliated with those firms on Sept. 7.

St. Jude accused them of intentionally disseminating false information about its heart devices to manipulate its stock price, which fell 5 percent the day they went public with their claims.

Abbott spokeswoman Candace Steele Flippin declined to say whether the company would continue to pursue the lawsuit.

Representatives for Muddy Waters and MedSec said they had no immediate comment.

Abbott shares were up 0.4 percent to $ 40.94 in early-afternoon trade. The S&P 500, by comparison, dipped 0.1 percent.

Republican Senators Urge Trump To Embrace Findings On Russia Hacking

WASHINGTON, Jan 8 (Reuters) – Two senior Republican senators urged President-elect Donald Trump to punish Russia in response to U.S. intelligence agencies’ conclusion that President Vladimir Putin personally directed efforts aimed at influencing the outcome of the November election.

In a joint appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain said evidence was conclusive that Putin sought to influence the election – a point that Trump has refuted repeatedly by arguing it might be impossible to tell who was responsible.

“In a couple weeks, Donald Trump will be the defender of the free world and democracy,” Graham said. “You should let everybody know in America, Republicans and Democrats, that you’re going to make Russia pay a price for trying to interfere.”

Both senators said they remain unsure if they will support Trump’s pick for secretary of state, former Exxon Mobil Corp Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson, who has been criticized for his close ties to Putin. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on Wednesday to consider Tillerson’s nomination.

Three U.S. intelligence agencies released a joint report on Friday that concluded that Putin directed efforts to help Trump’s electoral chances by discrediting his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Hackers penetrated the Democratic National Committee’s email server and separately stole emails from John Podesta, who chaired Clinton’s campaign. The emails were then posted online and used to embarrass Clinton, including by Trump who frequently used the content as political ammunition.

Russia was trying to undermine public faith in the democratic process, damage Clinton, making it harder for her to win and harm her presidency if she did, the unclassified report said.

McCain said he supports continued investigations into the hacks.

“We need to come to grips with it and get to the bottom of it and overall come up with a strategy in this new form of warfare that can basically harm our economy, harm our elections, harm our national security,” he said.

Trump, whose views on Russia are out of step with his party, has repeatedly dismissed claims that the Russians were trying to help him, arguing that the charges against Russia are the product of his political opponents trying to undermine his victory.

On Friday, after receiving his intelligence briefing, Trump did not squarely address whether he was told of the agencies’ belief Russia carried out the hacking.

Instead, he said: “Russia, China, other countries, outside groups and people are consistently trying to break through the cyber infrastructure of our governmental institutions, businesses and organizations” including the DNC.

On Saturday, Trump wrote on Twitter that having a better relationship with Russia is a “good thing.”

“Only ‘stupid’ people or fools, would think that is bad!” he tweeted. “We have enough problems around the world without yet another one. When I am President, Russia will respect us far more than they do now and both countries will, perhaps, work together to solve some of the many great and pressing problems and issues of the WORLD!”

10 Powerful Ways To Create Your Own Happiness

2017-01-05-1483642794-489505-PowerfulWaysToCreateYourOwnHappinessHP.jpeg

Happiness comes in so many different forms that it can be hard to grasp. Unhappiness, on the other hand, is easy to identify; you know it when you see it, and you definitely know when it’s taken ahold of you.

And let’s face it, happiness and work do not always go hand in hand. A 2013 Gallup study, which reported data from more than 180 million people, found that just 13% of us consider ourselves to be “happily engaged at work.”

Those who do rate themselves as happy are 36% more motivated, six times more energized, and twice as productive as their unhappy counterparts.

Happiness actually has less to do with your circumstances than you might think. A University of Illinois study found that people who earn the most (more than $ 10 million annually) are only a smidge happier than the average Joes and Janes who work for them, and psychologists from the University of California found that genetics and life circumstances only account for about 50% of a person’s happiness. The rest is up to you.

Life circumstances have little to do with happiness because much happiness is under your control–the product of your habits and your outlook on life. Happiness is synthetic–you either create it, or you don’t.

When it comes to making yourself happy, you need to learn what works for you. Once you discover this, everything else tends to fall into place. And making yourself happy doesn’t just improve your performance; it’s also good for your health.

A critical skill set that happy people tend to have in common is emotional intelligence (EQ). At TalentSmart, we’ve tested the EQs of more than a million people and know what makes high EQ people tick. So, we went digging until we found some great ways that emotionally intelligent people create their own happiness.

1. They don’t obsess over things they can’t control. It’s good to know how the Brexit might affect your country’s markets or that your company could merge with its largest competitor, but there’s a big difference between understanding these larger forces and worrying about them. Happy people are ready and informed, but they don’t allow themselves to fret over things that are beyond their control.

2. They choose their battles wisely.
Emotionally intelligent people know how important it is to live to fight another day. In conflict, unchecked emotion makes you dig your heels in and fight the kind of battle that can leave you severely damaged and unhappy for some time to come. When you read and respond to your emotions, you’re able to choose your battles wisely and only stand your ground when the time is right.

3. They get enough sleep. I’ve beaten this one to death over the years and can’t say enough about the importance of sleep to improving your mood, focus, and self-control. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, removing toxic proteins that accumulate during the day as byproducts of normal neuronal activity. This ensures that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your energy, attention, and memory are all reduced when you don’t get enough quality sleep. Sleep deprivation also raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present. Happy people make sleep a priority, because it makes them feel great and they know how lousy they feel when they’re sleep deprived.

4. They heed their moral compass. Crossing moral boundaries in the name of success is a sure-fire path to unhappiness. Violating your personal standards creates feelings of regret, dissatisfaction, and demotivation. Know when to stand your ground and express dissent when someone wants you to do something that you know you shouldn’t. When you’re feeling confused, take some time to review your values and write them down. This will help you to locate your moral compass.

5. They exercise during the week.
Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a soothing neurotransmitter that also limits impulsivity. A University of Bristol study showed that people who exercised on workdays reported improvements in time management, mood, and performance. The benefits of exercise always outweigh the time lost in its pursuit.

6. They have a growth mindset.
People’s core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you’re challenged, because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. This makes them happier because they are better at handling difficulties. They also outperform those with a fixed mindset because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.

7. They clear the clutter.
I don’t need to remind you of how much time you spend at work. Take a good look at your workspace. You should create a space that’s soothing and uplifting. Whether it’s a picture of your family, a plant, or an award that you’re proud of, display them prominently to keep them on your mind. Get rid of the junk and clutter that hold no significance and do nothing positive for your mental state.

8. They lend a hand.
Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy, but it also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

9. They let their strengths flow.
A University of Chicago study of peak performance found that people who were able to reach an intense state of focus, called flow, reaped massive benefits. Flow is the state of mind in which you find yourself completely engrossed in a project or task, and you lose awareness of the passage of time and other external distractions. Flow is often described as an exhilarating state in which you feel euphoria and mastery simultaneously. The result is not just happiness and productivity but also the development of new skills through a heightened state of learning. The key to reaching flow lies in organizing your tasks such that you have immediate and clear goals to pursue that play to your strengths. As you begin working on these tasks, your focus increases along with your feelings of adequacy. In time, you reach a flow state, in which productivity and happiness flourish. Set clear goals each day and experiment with task order until you find the secret formula that gets you flowing.

10. They believe the best is yet to come.
Don’t just tell yourself that the best is yet to come–believe it. Having a positive, optimistic outlook on the future doesn’t just make you happier; it also improves your performance by increasing your sense of self-efficacy. The mind has a tendency to magnify past pleasure to such a great degree that the present pales in comparison. This phenomenon can make you lose faith in the power of the future to outdo what you’ve already experienced. Don’t be fooled. Believe in the great things the future has in store.

Bringing It All Together

Applying these strategies won’t just improve your happiness at work; most of them will also improve your emotional intelligence. Pick those that resonate with you and have fun with them.

What makes you happy? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

California Killer Is First U.S. Inmate To Have State-Funded Gender Confirmation Surgery

A convicted murderer serving a life sentence in California has become the first inmate in America to have gender confirmation surgery paid for by a state.

Shiloh Heavenly Quine, 57, had the surgery in San Francisco Thursday and will be moved to a women’s prison when she leaves the hospital, Reuters reported.

Quine — who has been convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery for ransom and has no possibility of parole — won the right to the surgery after a hard-fought court settlement in 2015.

As part of the settlement, the state also agreed to create new policies in California allowing other inmates to apply to a six-member committee for gender confirmation surgery. In addition, California agreed to supply clothing and some accessories in prison consistent with an inmate’s gender identity.

“For too long, institutions have ignored doctors and casually dismissed medically necessary and life-saving care for transgender people just because of who we are,” Kris Hayashi, executive director of the Transgender Law Center, which represents Quine, said in a statement.

The daughter of Quine’s victim is furious.

“My dad begged for his life,” said Farida Baig, who tried to block Quine’s surgery through the courts, The Associated Press reported. “It made me dizzy and sick. I’m helping pay for his [sic] surgery. I live in California. It’s kind of like a slap in the face.”

Quine and an accomplice kidnapped and fatally shot 33-year-old Shahid Ali Baig, a father of three, in Los Angeles in 1980, and took $ 80 and his car.

The state was legally required to pay for the operation, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections.

“The 8th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution requires that prisons provide inmates with medically necessary treatment for medical and mental health conditions including inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria,” she said in a statement.

Quine told a prison psychologist who recommended her for the operation that it would bring a “drastic, internal completeness,” according to the AP.

She tried to cut and hang herself in prison five times in suicide attempts.

Michelle-Lael Norsworthy, a transgender former inmate, won a federal court order in 2015 mandating that California pay for her gender confirmation surgery, but she was placed on parole before she could have the operation, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

WATCH: Getting More Than Your Money’s Worth

We’ve all heard the expression, “You get what you paid for,” but we also all have experiences of feeling like we got little value for something we paid a lot for, and lots of value for something we got for little or no money (I’m hoping that certain YouTube videos fall into that category…). Maybe the real truth is that we get what we choose to get – that we are responsible for the amount of value we receive. And if that’s the case, choose to get maximum value from whatever you invest your time and money into. I hope this helps you get the most from this new year.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

This Governor Is Defying The GOP And Pushing To Expand Medicaid To Over Half A Million People

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) says he’ll quickly expand Medicaid in his state before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. His vow sets up a confrontation with Republicans in the state who have explicitly passed a law barring him from making such a move.

Cooper said Friday he sent a letter to the Center for Medicaid Services this week requesting the expansion under the Affordable Care Act, which Trump and Republicans in Washington, D.C., have pledged to repeal. The expansion extends Medicaid eligibility to people with incomes 138 percent below the federal poverty level. Under the ACA, the federal government would pay for 95 percent of the cost of the expansion and then a little less each year until paying 90 percent in 2020.

In a statement Friday, Cooper noted that North Carolina hospitals pay $ 1 billion in care each year to residents who cannot pay and that expanding Medicaid was “common sense.” More than half a million North Carolinians could begin receiving healthcare in January next year if the plan goes through, Cooper said.

“We can receive between $ 3 billion and $ 4 billion to pay for care that hospitals and other providers now give away,” he said. That will create jobs, bolster our hospitals, could save some rural hospitals and work toward more stable private insurance premiums.”

Cooper’s predecessor, Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed a law in 2013 blocking the state from expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, “unless directed to do so by the General Assembly.” Republicans currently control both chambers of the North Carolina legislature.

In his statement, Cooper claimed that the 2013 law did not prevent him from taking action.

“Right now, North Carolina tax dollars are going to Washington, where they are being redistributed to states that have expanded Medicaid,” he said. “To date, 31 states and Washington DC have expanded coverage through Medicaid; in 2016 these states received more than $ 70 billion in federal funds. Why should North Carolinians pay for Medicaid expansion in states like New Jersey, Ohio and Indiana when we don’t even expand it to our own people?”

Phil Berger (R), the Republican leader in the state Senate, told the News and Observer that Cooper’s actions would violate state law.

“Just days into his term as governor, Roy Cooper already intends to violate his oath of office with a brazenly illegal attempt to force a massive, budget-busting Obamacare expansion on North Carolina taxpayers,” he said. “Cooper is three strikes and out on his attempt to break state law: he does not have the authority to unilaterally expand Obamacare, his administration cannot take steps to increase Medicaid eligibility and our Constitution does not allow him to spend billions of state tax dollars we don’t have to expand Obamacare without legislative approval.”

Medicaid could be the latest in a series of confrontations between Cooper and Republicans in North Carolina. Just before he took office, Republicans passed two laws subjecting his cabinet picks to Senate confirmation and reducing his influence on election boards. A three-judge panel has blocked the latter law from taking effect while Cooper challenges it in court.

Over Fifty GOP Electors May Have Voted Illegally. Not One Democratic Senator Will Speak Up

When I grow up, I want to be a Democratic senator. It must be relaxing to never fight a battle. I find it heartening to know that not a single Democrat in the Senate is willing to challenge the Electoral College vote, even though we have evidence that over fifty Republican electors may have voted illegally. To challenge this would be a breach of decorum, and what matters now — above all — is to be polite. You don’t want to cast aspersions upon the workings of the democracy; that might incline people to lose respect for the process, and hence to abuse it. Wouldn’t that be horrible? Better to be a Democrat.

Imagine how poorly behaved Republicans would be in this circumstance: if the election had been handed to Hillary by the CIA and the Russian president, and the Electoral College were in violation of the law. They’d be so very obstreperous. It would be embarrassing. Worse: they might even change the outcome. Think what poor sportsmen they’d be considered if they did that. Better to be a Democrat.

I know — the merely courageous will tell you that you can’t win a battle that you don’t fight. But Democrats have figured out something much more congenial: you can’t lose one either. And losing is depressing.

Of course, it’s also depressing to be a jellyfish nailed to a plank.

Still, we should sympathize. It’s hard to stand up to things when you’re spineless, and the spine-impaired are human too. It would be insensitive to call upon even one lousy senator to demonstrate courage here. The Senate should be a safe space.

Also, questioning the legitimacy of electors has only the very slimmest chance of changing anything; nobody doubts this. It’s one of those battles where the odds are painful. And that’s the kind of battle that really doesn’t appeal, unless you’re a hero. We’ve all met a few of those: pushy, annoying people who talk about “honor” and “principle” and “doing the right thing.” Not the kind of people you want to caucus with. Heroes are lame. You want to be the sort of soldier who fights only the most winnable of wars. Sooner or later one of those battles will come along, and you can rest assured that Democrats will be all over it. We’ll see an army of them, claiming their easy victory, and then graciously offering concessions and compromises to the losers, so that nobody’s sore.

When it comes to not fighting, Democratic solidarity is truly impressive: a wall of cowardice. All it would take here is one — a single senator — to support the challenge, and then the matter would go to debate. Just one principled politician, willing to express outrage at Electoral College malfeasance. But progressives are better than that. If you rock the boat, then one of your friends might get wet, and then he’ll be angry at you, and people will suggest that you’re not a team player, and it will all be just so depressing.

And what’s at stake, after all? The demonstrable illegitimacy of the new president? This strikes you as a reason to make noise, and risk Republican complaints? Do you have any idea how angry Sean Hannity will be?

It is time to recognize cowardice for what it is: a virtue. Which is to say, a quality evinced by the best people. Let us celebrate Democrats, because only the best lack all conviction.

3 Silicon Valley-Tested Tips For Introvert Networking

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

In the Silicon Valley, many senior leaders are introverted—in fact, many more than in most other industries we’ve studied in our research of over 200 C-Suite Executives. There are some great lessons that we can learn about introverts from the Valley.

Rajeev Behera has worked in the Silicon Valley for the past seven years, running marketing teams in various start-ups. He now heads up Reflektive, a communication platform that enables employees to send and receive continual, real-time feedback. He provided me with three key tips for introverts to shine bright next to their louder, extroverted peers.

Focus on manager one-on-ones

One of the most important goals introverted employees need to keep in mind is to be intentional about having one-on-ones with their managers. Extroverts, as natural talkers, are comfortable discussing what they’re working on, what their goals are, and what progress they’ve made. Because they speak so freely, openly, and with such ease, peers and managers often hear of their progress and productivity at work. Extroverts’ more expressive nature can make silent introverts appear less productive.

What Behera suggests, then, is to play to one of the strengths of introverts—that of having deeper, more detailed conversations. People with quieter presences should intentionally converse daily with their managers, even for five minutes, to update them. Because introverts are not always talking, it’s important for them to set aside time to consciously inform and update their supervisors on their progress. This not only enables introverts to properly share their insights but also forms strong relationships. For introverts, it’s often easier to speak up one-on-one than in front of peers, so this tactic also gives them the opportunity to gain visibility in the eyes of their managers.

Behera put it well: “That’s probably the biggest key: letting them know how insightful you are and being very clear about what you’re doing in those one-on-ones, and making sure you develop that one-on-one relationship with your manager—outside of group meetings and team meetings.”

Focus on quality, not quantity

The next point Behera makes is similar to a point often made in the discussion about introverts and networking. Networking can be perceived as daunting and uncomfortable for many introverts. Rather than work a room the same way an extrovert would (speaking to many people for little time), introverts often speak to fewer people but have longer, more detailed conversations. Those conversations easily go beyond the superficial and can lead to relationships that last several years after the event, long beyond the more typical duration of a mere follow-up e-mail.

Within a company, the same tactic can be used to foster deeper relationships among employees. Once you reach a certain level at an organization, you have a tight-knit set of peers and co-workers; still, it’s often beneficial to maintain relationships with employees within various sectors of an organization.

The same way introverts would speak to fewer people at a networking event but sustain a deeper conversation, they could establish good relationships with employees across the company. This enables introverts to be known—not superficially by everyone at the company, but in-depth by quite a few.

Focus on synthesis

A final point is that it’s always helpful to be a second ear to your boss. Behera noticed the manifestation of this stemming from the one-on-one relationships he had with some of his employees. These employees would go off to their meetings or work in peer groups, listen intently to conversations, synthesize the information they’d heard, and report back to him in a thoughtful manner.

The ability to synthesize a lot of information is a key skill of introverts. Instead of talking a lot in meetings, they listen closely and share important takeaways from the meetings with their managers later on. The level of insight this skill provides is a great quality of introverts—one they should capitalize on.

Though introverts are quiet, they can shine just as brightly as their extroverted peers. Establishing one-on-one conversations with a manager, fostering deeper relationships with fewer employees across the company, and synthesizing information are all gateways for introverts to spotlight their talents and productive efforts.

Introverts deserve to be heard, and being quiet should not get in the way of that.

Obamacare Repeal Could Trap Republicans Into Raising Taxes Later, GOP Senator Warns

WASHINGTON ― Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) is worried that getting rid of the revenue increases in Obamacare while maintaining its subsidies will force the Republican Party to raise taxes later on.

“Right now, the track we’re on, the repeal process is going to repeal all the revenues, but keep in place the subsidies for three years,” Corker said at breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor on Friday morning.

That raises the prospect of increasing the annual budget deficit, he added, a result he would like to “overcome.” Corker estimated it would cost $ 116 billion to keep subsidies for three years without the law’s revenue increases.

“You’re taking $ 116 billion, by our calculations, and just throwing it into a mud puddle by continuing subsidies without revenue,” he said. “So I hope that what is going to happen over time, over the next few weeks, is that people will deal with this on a fiscally sound basis, too.”

Obamacare, otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act, provides subsidies to low- and middle-income people who purchase health insurance on exchanges created by the law. It pays for those subsidies though a number of different taxes, including a tax on the investment income of wealthy individuals.

Though Congressional Republicans have already begun drafting legislation to repeal the health care law, including its revenue increases, Corker is among a growing group of senators expressing doubts about the pace and nature of the legislative push.

He’s also the first to frame it as a recipe for a tax increase down the line.

Corker suggested that if subsidies were extended beyond the three-year period for which he expects Republicans to keep them in place, perhaps as part of replacement legislation, it would put Republicans in a “box canyon” where they “would have to vote for a tax increase” to pay for the subsidies.

Several Republican politicians have said they are wary of repealing Obamacare without an adequate replacement. Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) expressed strong reservations about the so-called repeal and delay strategy favored by other GOP lawmakers.

President-elect Donald Trump has also warned that repealing the law too quickly could prove politically dangerous.

Corker said he supported Trump’s comments, but did not indicate he would vote against repeal unless there was a plan ready to replace it.

“The President-elect’s position is the right position,” he said. “If you look at some of his quotes recently, he continues to offer caution. In fact, during the campaign, he said that the repeal and replacement should take place simultaneously.”

“That, to me, is the prudent course of action,” he concluded.

Jessica Schulberg contributed reporting.

Real Black

Real Black

New York’s urban neighborhoods are full of young would-be emcees who aspire to “keep it real” and restaurants like Sylvia’s famous soul food eatery that offer a taste of “authentic” black culture. In these and other venues, authenticity is considered the best way to distinguish the real from the phony, the genuine from the fake. But inReal Black, John L. Jackson Jr. proposes a new model for thinking about these issues?racial sincerity. Jackson argues that authenticity caricatures identity as something imposed on people, imprisoning them within stereotypes: an African American high school student who excels in the classroom, for instance, might be dismissed as “acting white.” On the other hand, sincerity, as Jackson defines it, imagines authenticity as an incomplete measuring stick, an analytical model that attempts to deny people agency in their search for identity. Drawing on more than ten years of ethnographic research in and around New York City, Jackson offers a kaleidoscope of subjects and stories that directly and indirectly address how race is negotiated in today’s world?including tales of book-vending numerologists, urban conspiracy theorists, corrupt police officers, mixed-race neo-Nazis, and gospel choirs forbidden to catch the Holy Ghost. Jackson records and retells their interconnected sagas, all the while attempting to reconcile these stories with his own crisis of identity and authority as an anthropologist terrified by fieldwork. Finding ethnographic significance where mere mortals see only bricks and mortar, his invented alter ego Anthroman takes to the streets, showing how race is defined and debated, imposed and confounded every single day.

Iconic Rio Stadium Has Fallen Into ‘A State Of Abandonment’ After Olympics

Just months after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics came to a close, the stadium at the center of the games has fallen into a “state of abandonment” and disrepair, according to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

Maracanã, a national icon since its construction for the 1950 World Cup, underwent a $ 600 million renovation in preparation for the 2014 World Cup final and the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympics. It hosted multiple soccer matches, including Brazil’s emotional gold medal win over Germany.

Now, spotty patches of burned-out turf mark its fields, food from the last major event it hosted litters the stands, and as many as 7,000 stadium seats are missing, O Globo reported after gaining access to the venue on Wednesday.

The “smell of mold is noticeable” inside Maracanã, O Globo said, and numerous cats roam the stadium’s grounds. Destroyed and unmaintained furniture, holes in the walls and exposed wires are all visible, and the stadium suffers from electrical outages.

Rio’s state government and the consortium of private companies that took over Maracanã after the Olympics say they are not responsible for maintaining it, and blame the Rio 2016 organizing committee for its current state. The committee told O Globo that it delivered the stadium in the condition required by its contract with the state and construction firms, but has not yet completed necessary repairs.

Prior to the games, corruption allegations marred Maracanã’s renovation. Rio’s public auditor accused the construction firms involved of improperly enriching themselves last July. But even before that, the stadium’s makeover was a point of controversy for Rio’s citizens. As stadium seating and luxury boxes replaced more affordable standing room-only terraces, many saw Maracanã’s privatization as a repudiation of its history as a public gathering place accessible to all of the city’s residents.

The author David Goldblatt summarized many of those complaints in Futebol Nation, a book about Brazil’s soccer and political history, calling the stadium’s renovation an act of “architectural vandalism and cultural desecration” that rendered it “a parody of its former self.”

Maracanã is not the only project tied to the Rio Olympics to have faltered soon after the end of the games. In October, the $ 65 million cable car in the Complexo do Alemão favela ― a supposed Olympic legacy project for the network of poor neighborhoods in Rio’s north zone ― shut down indefinitely because the Rio state government failed to pay the company that maintained it.

A number of the World Cup stadiums built or renovated for the 2014 soccer spectacle also fell into financial trouble or disrepair soon afterwards. Brasilia’s Estádio Nacional, the most expensive of Brazil’s World Cup venues, was used almost solely as a bus parking lot in the months after the event.

Maracanã has continued hosting events after the Olympics, including matches for three of Rio’s largest soccer teams and an end-of-year charity match to benefit the families of Chapecoense plane crash victims. It will continue to do so, meaning there’s at least some hope that the stadium’s problems will eventually be fixed.

But for now, as a stadium once described as “a sacred temple for Brazilians” descends into disrepair, it’s easy to see Maracanã’s current state as a symbol of the many other broken promises of the Rio Olympics and World Cup.
