This Election Is More Normal Than It Seems

It has become almost a cliche to note that this election is unlike any other in American history. There has never been a candidate quite like Donald Trump who has broken all the rules of modern campaigning, has offended virtually every religious, racial and ethnic group, as well as women and LGBT people, and who has, in a field where enormous egos are common, perhaps even essential, taken narcissism to a level never before seen in American politics. The historic importance of this campaign is not just due to the bizarre and erratic behavior of the Republican candidate, but also to the Democratic nominee being the first woman ever nominated for President by a major party. Hillary Clinton is poised to become the first woman president in our history. This is a very big deal. However, in some part because of her gender, Clinton, who has run a reasonably smart and disciplined campaign, has remained extremely unpopular. It is only Donald Trump’s historically high negatives that have prevented Hillary Clinton from being the least popular major party nominee in recent history.

Despite all this, one of the most significant, and underreported, aspects of this campaign is how similar it is to most recent presidential elections. While being a woman makes Hillary Clinton different than all of the other candidates the Democratic Party has ever nominated, and her experience makes her more qualified than many recent Democratic nominees, on the issues she fits firmly in the mainstream of her party and does not stand out much from recent previous nominees like Barack Obama, Al Gore, John Kerry or Bill Clinton. She combines a liberal outlook on social issues, and centrist position on many economic issues and positions on foreign policy that reflect bipartisan establishment views. There is nothing very unusual about the Democratic Party nominating a candidate like that.

To suggest that Donald Trump has a cohesive vision or set of policies would be too generous to the real estate and branding dilettante, so it is not so easy to place him in the context of recent Republican nominees or of the GOP more generally. Nonetheless, regardless of the proposals and policies that seem to emerge unexamined and unformed from his mouth, Trump is moving towards a platform that continues the longstanding GOP policy of one-sided class warfare on behalf of the rich, and a resistance to making the US a more equal society for women, non-whites, non-Christians and LGBT people. The Trump campaign has also added a nasty dollop of anti-Semitism to this stew of intolerance that is unusual for today’s GOP.

Most tellingly, the campaign strategies and possible winning coalitions for each of the candidates is almost the same as in every presidential election this century. Clinton is trying to hold together a Democratic coalition of African Americans, Latinos, liberal whites, many of whom are either LGBT or Jewish, and just enough working class white to win. Much has been made of how Donald Trump has been unable to grow his support beyond his party’s white straight Christian base, but to deny that for most of the last twenty or more years the Republican Party has been struggling to win voters who do not fit all of those three categories, is to deny political reality. There have been exceptions, such as George W. Bush’s strong showing among Latinos in 2000, but these have been differences of degree, not of kind. Similarly, this year Clinton has been doing better than most recent Democratic presidential candidates among college educated white women, but will still lose the white vote badly.

Although Trump’s poorly thought out campaign has put states like Georgia in play for the Democratic nominee, the electoral map also will look a lot like it has in recent presidential elections. Trump will sweep most of the south and the heavily white plains states, while Clinton will win most of the mid-Atlantic, northeastern and west coast states. The same states like Colorado, Missouri, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio and Florida that have been swing states every year since 2000 will decide the election this year as well.

The desire to portray Donald Trump’s campaign as more of an outlier than it actually is partially grows out of a legitimate bewilderment on the part of the media and others both at Trump’s behavior and at how well he has been doing in this election. However, it is also misleading and understates not the degree of racial polarization in this election, but the degree of racial polarization that has characterized American political life, and partisan politics, for decades now. Trump is a racist who has placed intolerance and bigotry at the center of his campaign in a way that is unique in modern times, but he would not have been able to succeed in this endeavor if the Republican Party had been a more pluralist and diverse institution for the last few decades. Moreover, the similarities between this and previous elections, while perhaps not consistent with more interesting election year narratives, demonstrate the enduring strength of our two party system and how difficult it is, even for a candidate like Trump, to disrupt it.

Why The Humane Society President Changed His Mind About Working With Michael Vick

When NFL star Michael Vick pled guilty to running a dog fighting ring on his property in 2007, he sparked instant and intense outage across the country. Vick’s violence against pit bulls ― he also admitted to killing six to eight dogs by hanging or drowning ― infuriated animal lovers, and one activist who was particularly disgusted was Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle.

As Pacelle told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” he and the Humane Society were very vocal in their condemnation of Vick’s horrifying acts.

“We demanded his prosecution because what he did to the animals was barbaric. It was despicable,” Pacelle says.

Vick ended up suspended from the NFL and served 19 months in prison. Then, the disgraced athlete reached out to the very people who had written him off the moment his cruelty surfaced publicly.

“One of his people called me just before he was getting out of prison, and they said, ‘Michael would like to work with the Humane Society of the United States on its anti-dog-fighting work,’” Pacelle recalls.

Pacelle, who figured the request was little more than a PR move, said no and hung up the phone. “I thought, ‘OK, this guy wants to do a makeover. He wants to use me for that,’” he says.

But then, Pacelle began to reflect on himself and his mission.

“I said, ‘What am I about at the Humane Society?’ I mean, am I not about changing people for the better? That people who are doing the wrong thing start to move and do the right thing?” he says. “That’s what I do. I’m not just talking to people who are ‘of the faith.’ If I’m doing that, that’s just an echo chamber.”

Pacelle reconsidered Vick’s proposal not just for this reason, but for another powerful benefit as well.

“I also thought, ‘What if Michael Vick put boots on the ground, sort of talking to these kids in communities where they’re getting pit bulls for the wrong reasons … and told them about the evils of dog fighting?’” Pacelle says. “From a campaigner’s perspective, that’s going to allow me to reach tens of thousands of kids that I would not have an audience with.”

Ultimately, Pacelle adds, he hoped that working with Vick would also send a signal to society that would make people become more conscious of their own behaviors regarding animals, whether that’s through their fashion choices or eating habits.

“I’m sending a signal that we’re all sinners when it comes to animals,” he says.

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

Another insight from Pacelle:

Want Your Teen To Have A Healthy Weight? Science Says Shut Up

Experts agree that talking about the need to diet and lose weight is one of the most unhealthy, counterproductive things a parent can do for a teen who is struggling with weight issues.

Now, new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics formally endorse those findings. In order to prevent obesity and eating disorders, parents should focus less on diets and the scale and emphasize family togetherness and exercise for fitness, not weight loss.

Obesity in adolescents has quadrupled in the past 30 years; in 2012, 21 percent of young people aged 12 to 19 were obese. Teens who are obese are more likely to have bone or joint problems, as well as sleep apnea. They’re also more likely to develop prediabetes, which can lead to Type 2 diabetes. On top of that, teens who are obese are more likely to grow up to become obese adults who will face heightened risks for diseases including cancer and stroke.

In the midst of this obesity epidemic, eating disorders in children and teens have become a major medical problem. In 2012, eating disorders caused more than 90 percent of all hospitalizations for children aged 10 to 17 years old, according to data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The AAP report was compiled, in part, over growing concern about the unhealthy way teens are trying to lose weight.

Here are six takeaways from the report, published in the journal Pediatrics. These recommendations are for both doctors and parents, and they apply to all teens — not just those with weight problems.

What not to do:

Never encourage dieting.

Dieting packs a double whammy because it’s a risk factor for both obesity and eating disorders. Girls who weren’t obese but dieted in the ninth grade were three times were likely to be overweight by 12th grade, compared to girls who didn’t diet. And young people who severely reduced their caloric intake and skipped meals were 18 times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who didn’t diet. Even just moderate dieting increased a teen’s risk of developing an eating disorder fivefold

”A 3-year-old may not be worried if she’s a bit overweight, whereas an adolescent may try unhealthy weight-loss methods like fasting or diet pills and end up in a vicious circle of more weight gain,” explained lead author Dr. Neville Golden, a pediatrics professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, in a statement.

Don’t comment on your child’s weight, or even your weight.

What you say matters; teens who talk about weight with their parents are also more likely to diet, binge eat and have unhealthy weight control behaviors, but this risk lessens if the subject matter is about healthy eating behaviors.

No matter how well-intentioned or seemingly benign you think your comments are, studies show that comments parents make about either their own weight or their child’s weight is linked to a child’s risk of being overweight and developing an eating disorder.

It’s important to note here that a teen doesn’t have to look excessively thin for a parent to be concerned that they might have an eating disorder, said Golden.

“This is a dangerous category of patient, because they’re often missed by physicians,” he said. “At some point, these patients may have had a real need to lose weight, but things got out of control.”

Never tease teens about their weight.

This seems obvious, but bears repeating since a significant minority of overweight teens say they’ve experienced weight-related teasing from friends or family members. Cruel taunts about weight increase a child’s risk of both being overweight and developing eating disorders, and the pain can last into adulthood.

Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, a researcher who focuses on teen health and nutrition, previously told HuffPost that parents should make their homes a sanctuary where kids feel safe from weight-related teasing.

“Our children need to know that they can tell us what happened without receiving advice on how to lose weight,” she said.

What to do instead:

Eat together.

While eating meals together as a family has not been shown to reduce obesity rates, it does improve the nutritional content of a child’s diet and it allows parents to model healthy eating behaviors in front of their children, the report said. One study found that families who eat meals together seven or more times per week eat more fruits and vegetables compared to families who never eat together, and for the kids, this increased intake of fruits and veggies persisted into young adulthood. Another study found that eating family dinners most days during the previous years seemed to protect kids from binge eating, dieting and purging behaviors

Focus on a balanced diet and exercise ― not weight loss.

Encourage healthy body image by encouraging kids to eat healthfully and exercise for fitness ― not for weight loss. Teens who have these positive influences are more likely to report being happy with their bodies and less likely to say they had weight-related concerns. Kids who are dissatisfied with their bodies, on the other hand, are more likely to develop eating disorders, diet and have lower levels of physical activity.

Create a healthy home environment.

While it may seem from the AAP recommendations that a parent is more hemmed in about what they should or shouldn’t say to encourage a healthy lifestyle in children, the truth is that what a parent does says volumes about the best way to approach eating, exercise and body image.

The report says that parents can create a healthy food environment at home by buying and serving fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and water, while keeping artificial sweeteners, sugar-sweetened drinks and refined carbs away. Parents can also encourage physical activity by keeping TVs out of children’s bedrooms. Indeed, health interventions for both obesity and eating disorders are most effective when the whole family is involved in the treatment — not just the child who needs help.

Why A Single-Payer Healthcare System Is Inevitable

The best argument for a single-payer health plan is the recent decision by giant health insurer Aetna to bail out next year from 11 of the 15 states where it sells Obamacare plans.Aetna’s decision follows similar moves by UnitedHealth Group, the nation’s largest health insurer, and by Humana, another one of the giants.

All claim they’re not making enough money because too many people with serious health problems are using the Obamacare exchanges, and not enough healthy people are signing up.

The problem isn’t Obamacare per se. It lies in the structure of private markets for health insurance – which creates powerful incentives to avoid sick people and attract healthy ones. Obamacare is just making this structural problem more obvious.

In a nutshell, the more sick people and the fewer healthy people a private for-profit insurer attracts, the less competitive that insurer becomes relative to other insurers that don’t attract as high a percentage of the sick but a higher percentage of the healthy.

Eventually, insurers that take in too many sick and too few healthy people are driven out of business.

If insurers had no idea who’d be sick and who’d be healthy when they sign up for insurance (and keep them insured at the same price even after they become sick), this wouldn’t be a problem. But they do know – and they’re developing more and more sophisticated ways of finding out.

Health insurers spend lots of time, effort, and money trying to attract people who have high odds of staying healthy (the young and the fit) while doing whatever they can to fend off those who have high odds of getting sick (the older, infirm, and the unfit).

As a result we end up with the most bizarre health-insurance system imaginable: One ever better designed to avoid sick people.

If this weren’t enough to convince rational people to do what most other advanced nations have done – create a single-payer system that insures everyone, funded by taxpayers – consider that America’s giant health insurers are now busily consolidating into ever-larger behemoths.

UnitedHealth is already humongous.

Aetna, meanwhile, is trying to buy Humana in a deal that will create the second-largest health insurer in the nation, with 33 million members. The Justice Department has so far blocked the deal.

Insurers say they’re consolidating in order to reap economies of scale. But there’s little evidence that large size generates cost savings.

In reality, they’re becoming huge to get more bargaining leverage over everyone they do business with – hospitals, doctors, employers, the government, and consumers. That way they make even bigger profits.

But these bigger profits come at the expense of hospitals, doctors, employers, the government, and, ultimately, taxpayers and consumers.

There’s abundant evidence, for example, that when health insurers merge, premiums rise. researchers found, for example, that after Aetna merged with Prudential HealthCare in 1999, premiums rose 7 percent higher than had the merger not occurred.

What to do? In the short term, Obamacare can be patched up by enlarging government subsidies for purchasing insurance, and ensuring that healthy Americans buy insurance, as the law requires.

But these are band aids. The real choice in the future is either a hugely expensive for-profit oligopoly with the market power to charge high prices even to healthy people and stop insuring sick people.

Or else a government-run single payer system – such as is in place in almost every other advanced economy – dedicated to lower premiums and better care for everyone.

We’re going to have to choose eventually.

Will We Ever Really Know Ourselves?

When the ancient Greeks first uttered the dictum “Know thyself,” they had another choice. They could have said “Know lots of other things.” In one direction the investigation goes inward; in the opposite direction the investigation goes outward. “Know thyself” stands for something that, as far as we know, only human beings possess: self-awareness. “Know lots of other things” also points to a unique human capacity: curiosity about the outside world. I think it’s unarguable that the investigation of the outside world, as pursued by science, has gotten much, much further than self-awareness. Scientists have probed Nature in every dimension, while self-awareness hasn’t even stopped humanity from the impulse to destroy itself.

The gap between “Know thyself” and “Know Lots of other things” was sharply drawn by a current post from the back-page editor of Scientific American, Michael Shermer.  Reading his piece, “At the Boundary of Knowledge,” one comes away with a sense that science is totally triumphant. Not only has science achieved huge successes in acquiring facts and data that led to the overwhelming dominance of technology in the world. It has done something much more difficult. Quoting a recent book, The Big Picture, by Sean Carroll, a physicist from the California Institute of Technology, Shermer claims that now we can be almost certain about how all knowledge is attained. “All of the things you’ve ever seen or experienced in your life — objects, plants, animals, people — are made of a small number of particles, interacting with one another through a small number of forces.”

From this position, which we can call hardline materialism, Shermer reaches the following conclusion: “Once you understand the fundamental laws of nature, you can scale up to planets and people and even assess the probability that God, the soul, the afterlife and ESP exist, which Carroll concludes is very low.” I haven’t read Prof. Carroll’s book, but you can see Shermer, and many of his readers, dusting off their hands with a satisfied sense of “Well, that’s that.” If they are right, science has eliminated the need for “Know thyself” simply by swallowing up the whole issue of self-awareness and packing it away with particles and forces, having scaled up to planets and peoples, God and the soul.

Or there is another possibility, eloquently expressed by great pioneers of quantum physics around a century ago. Max Planck, who named the quantum, wrote, “All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the matrix of all matter.” Werner Heisenberg doubled down on that assertion: “The atoms or elementary particles themselves are not real; they form a world of potentialities or possibilities rather than one of things or facts.”

These insights about the mind as a primary force in Nature sound either strange, absurd, imaginary, or metaphysical to anyone pursuing the “Know lots of other things” project that gave rise to science. But they make perfect sense to the “Know thyself” project. It’s obvious on the face of it that no matter how finely you break a piano down into molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, the facts you gain say nothing about how music is composed, nor can you get there by dissecting Mozart’s brain, which is nothing but a conglomerate of ordinary molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, also.

In fact, there are scientists who understand the distinction and are trying to resolve it. A growing cadre of investigators has opened the door to a once-forbidden subject, consciousness.  The gist of Shermer’s article is to debunk the existence of paranormal phenomena, a very large category into which he tosses God, the soul, witchcraft, and all manner of superstitions. But such attacks from the stance of scientific atheism are premature. Until we understand how consciousness comes about, both normal and paranormal events are equally mysterious. Two observers, one claiming to see angels, the other to see nebulae and galaxies, derive their experience from totally unknown processes by which the dark, silent, mushy environment of the brain, using completely ordinary electrochemical activity, produces a three-dimensional world.

Maintaining that physics disproves, or reduces to the vanishing point, the very possibility of paranormal phenomena, Shermer’s once-over-lightly of “the horizon where the known meets the unknown” misses the main chance. Instead of beating the dead horse of scientific atheism Shermer should have considered a far more amazing current trend.

I mean the trend that places so-called supernatural phenomena on the same playing field as natural events. Consciousness is the field of all experience including the knowing of experience. This is the only irrefutable fact anyone has to work with. The inside scoop in physics and biology is that a crisis of knowledge has developed when attempting to account for the fundamental definitions of time, space, matter, energy, and life. In a cosmos ruled by dark matter and energy, where no empirical evidence exists about the origin of time, where the multiverse is pure conjecture and no one has the slightest idea how the constants that emerged from the Big Bang created the perfect scenario for life on Earth, Shermer’s brand of stubborn physicalism is not just wheezy — it’s not true to the current situation in science.

It’s time for Shermer to go back to the future and read these seminal physicists like Planck, Heisenberg, and Schrödinger, so that instead of relying upon a primitive belief that all phenomena come down to the interaction of particles, he gets into the game when it’s finally becoming interesting. “Know thyself” may be at a low point compared to ancient Greece, but it’s getting ready for a comeback that promises to change everything.

Rudy Giuliani Claims Online Videos Show Hillary Clinton Is Mentally Ill

Donald Trump campaign adviser and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani asserted that online videos exist that raise serious questions about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s mental health.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Giuliani blamed the news media for failing to give attention to supposedly valid questions about Clinton’s psychological fitness.

Asked to explain Clinton’s lead over Trump in the polls, Giuliani argued that she has “an entire media empire” devoted to attacking Trump and ignoring her own foibles.

The media, he claimed, “fails to point out several signs of illness by her. All you’ve got to do is go online.”

Pressed for evidence of this illness by host Shannon Bream, Giuliani doubled down on unnamed internet sources.

“Go online and put down ‘Hillary Clinton illness,’ take a look at the videos for yourself,” he insisted.

In fact, there is no evidence to suggest that Clinton is psychologically unhealthy. Fake medical records circulating online claim a concussion Clinton sustained in December 2012 resulted in lasting brain damage. Clinton’s physician, Lisa Bardack, reaffirmed in an Aug. 16 note that Clinton is in “excellent health.”

Clinton campaign press secretary Brian Fallon responded to Giuliani on Twitter with a reference to Giuliani’s battle with prostate cancer that led him to drop out of the New York Senate race against Clinton in 2000.

Of course, absence of proof notwithstanding, Giuliani was only amplifying a similar smear Trump made on the campaign trail. The GOP nominee questioned Clinton’s “mental and physical stamina” in a speech on Monday.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Angels and Molecules

The other day my wife, Ana, and I went out for a few hours. When we came back, we parked the car, entered through the downstairs garage door, came up to the first floor and into the living room. Where we saw our intrepid dog Ben, standing on the back of the living room couch, gazing out the window. Waiting.

To explain: Ana is the center of Ben’s universe, the sun around which all his planets revolve. She is his oxygen, his A to Z, his why the universe exists. He was waiting for her.

But Ben has gone deaf. He had somehow missed seeing the car’s approach, and hadn’t heard it come down the drive, or the motorized grind of the garage door opening, or our footsteps up the stairs. As far as he knew, we were still gone.

2016-08-19-1471640868-7835203-Ben2.jpg

Moments after I snapped this picture, I clapped, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned his head and saw Ana — and his little dog face broke into an ecstatic OMG, why didn’t someone tell me?! and all was right with the world.

It made me think of Beethoven.

Late in life, Beethoven was attending the premier of his ninth (and final) symphony. “Attending” is perhaps not the right word. Although he was by this time deaf as a board, he strongly felt he should be on hand to guide the musicians along in this huge and enormously challenging composition, so he stood right up there on stage, by the conductor, and gestured like crazy throughout the performance, doing his utmost to shape the right tempi and dynamics and phrasing — even though he could not hear a note.

After the last chord was sounded, the composer stood on the stage, breathing heavily, facing the orchestra. The audience, who had never heard anything like this before (nor, for that matter, had anyone on the planet), erupted into raucous, deafening applause.

The composer was oblivious. He had no idea anyone was even clapping. The mezzo-soprano soloist had to approach him (with tears in her eyes, and can you blame her?) and tug on his arm to get him to turn around and see the thunderous response his music has evoked.

This got me thinking:

What if we’re all like Ben and Beethoven?

What if we are surrounded by all the applause, but just don’t hear it? If the center of our universe, the thing we love most, has already arrived and is standing there watching us, but we just don’t know it yet?

I remember as a teenager, taking a walk one morning in my neighborhood, going blocks and blocks in my quiet suburban town, a Sunday, hardly anyone about. I’d been reading about physics and metaphysics and different thinkers’ understandings of how reality was assembled. I remember stopping, standing, and gazing out along a path down to a field.

It suddenly hit me that I was surrounded by billions, trillions, quadrillions of molecules, atoms, particles, all buzzing and humming and soaring in orbits around each other, vibrating like mad. I was a musician and student of acoustics, and I knew this basic fact of life: vibration makes noise. I was standing in the midst of the most colossal symphony imaginable. I just couldn’t hear it.

Although for those few moments, it felt as if I almost did.

There is an ancient tradition in Bali which holds that a gamelan orchestra, that most mesmerizing of human musical ensembles, doesn’t “make” its music. No, say the Balinese, that rippling stream of rhythm and melody is already happening, already going on, all around us, all the time. The job of the gamelan musicians is not to create the music, but simply to catch it, like a crystal set picking up radio waves and stepping them down to audible form.

What if we are surrounded by symphonies?

What if our ancestors, departed parents, and all those loved ones who have shuffled off before us are in fact standing right beside us, beaming with pleasure at our antics, cheering us on?

What if throngs of angels are stomping and hooting and laughing and shouting, exuberant as a sold-out Bruce Springsteen auditorium just to be there watching us, applauding our every mundane move like a chorus of thunderclaps?

You know, I think they may be.

You can almost hear them, can’t you?

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Zingerman’s Guide to Good Eating: How to Choose the Best Bread, Cheeses, Olive Oil, Pasta, Chocolate, and Much More

Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Zingerman’s is a food emporium specializing in top-quality products. One of the store’s founding partners, Ari Weinzweig, is also the author of Zingerman’s Guide to Good Eating, a key to the pleasures of the best breads, cheeses, olive oil, chocolate, and more, complete with 130 recipes. Like his store (whose name is a fanciful evocation of old-world delis), Weinzweig is committed to the best. Why? “Ultimately, I could care less whether food is fancy,” he writes. “I just want it to taste good.” The better food tastes,” he says, “the more zing [in your] daily routine.” A too modest claim for the pleasures of getting to know your food Beginning with an exploration of the why and how of better ingredients (if you think you can’t recognize them, Weinzweig offers “eating experiments,” such as trying supermarket Swiss cheese versus a well-aged Gruyre), and other help (like “Saffron Superstitions Skewered”). He then presents food profiles–such as those for oils, olives, and vinegars, and grains and rices–with notes on production and exemplary types, brand information and other what-to-look for info, plus suggestions for use. For example, readers learn about Italian rices such as arborio and carnaroli; discover how to recognize their impostors (look for the seal of the rice growers consortium); take a visit to a venerable rice grower; then receive thorough advice on risotto making. Corey Lewandowski Doesn’t Seem To Get That John Kerry Lost The 2004 Election

After the chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign resigned on Friday, former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski tried to insist Trump’s bid for the White House was going just fine.

Lewandowski, who was fired by Trump in June, drew a puzzling parallel to make his point, arguing that in 2004, John Kerry was also making staff changes as the election approached.

“This campaign is not the first campaign to make staff changes. If you look at John Kerry’s campaign, when he was running, he was making changes as late as Labor Day, and don’t forget we’re still in August,” Lewandowski said on CNN.

The remark prompted host Kate Bolduan to point out the obvious: Kerry lost the race for the White House in 2004 to George W. Bush.

Nonetheless, Lewandowski insisted that last-minute changes could still be good.

“Well, I understand, but the change in 2004 that John Kerry made helped him actually do significantly better than what he was doing,” he said.

Lewandowski, who reportedly clashed with Paul Manafort, Trump’s since-departed campaign chairman, when the two worked together, said it was clear Trump was unhappy with the direction in which Manafort was leading the campaign. The new campaign leadership, Lewandowski said, would allow Trump to be more “authentic.”

“Sometimes you have to bring different perspectives in. Sometimes, you have to change things, particularly, in a campaign that, in the last three or four weeks has missed, in my opinion, opportunities to go after Hillary Clinton for the failures of her campaign and to point out those failures. I don’t think they’ve done a good job on that,” he said.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Crazy Busy? How Much Would You Pay For An Hour Of Calm?

“What I wouldn’t give for a moment of peace and calm.” This was the thought I had a few days ago on a particularly hectic day running errands, running my business, and parenting my four-and-a-half month old. Work and life pressures are intense for all of us today, and we have become a culture that is “addicted to busy.”

As you reflect on your life for a moment, how much would you pay to avoid feeling embarrassed at work, or to avoid feeling guilty for missing your daughter’s recital for an out-of-town business meeting? How much is that hour of calm worth to you? The value of experiencing positive emotions and avoiding negative ones was recently explored in a study where researchers created a value-based ranking of emotions using a willingness to pay approach.

Your balance of positive and negative emotions is an important influence on your subjective well-being – the way you think and feel about life. But is it better for well-being to pursue positive emotions or avoid negative ones? According to a series of studies across cultures, the results are mixed. One study of college students across 40 countries showed that positive emotions were a stronger influence on well-being than negative emotions. In some cultures, each negative event had nearly twice the impact on well-being as each positive event. Other studies show that positive and negative emotions had roughly the same impact on well-being.

More interestingly, researchers wondered what people would do to achieve their most desired emotions – would they be willing to spend time, effort and even money to pursue or avoid those emotions? To answer that question, researchers developed a value-based ranking of different emotions by having people assign hypothetical values to them. Study participants (in two separate studies across two different cultures) were asked to state the amount they would pay to experience a range of positive emotions and avoid certain negative emotions. They allocated a value after being asked the following question: “Think of a specific time in your life you were very ______ (insert the emotion). How much would you be willing to pay to re-create (or avoid) this feeling for one hour?”

Here is how the research subjects spent their dollars*:

** $ 44.30 to experience calm

** $ 79.07 to experience happiness

** $ 92.81 to avoid sadness

** $ 99.82 to avoid embarrassment

** $ 106.27 to avoid regret

Only one emotion was more valuable than avoiding regret, and that was love. Love was worth $ 113.56 to these folks. While human beings may spend a lot of time and energy (and hypothetical dollars) avoiding negative emotions, it appears that bottom line, we just want to feel loved. Love was also the most valuable emotion cited in the first study as well.

I think it would be interesting to extend these studies beyond cultural comparisons to look at differences among generations and even life stages. When I was a young lawyer, I could have cared less about calm because I was driven to work lots of hours and make my mark. Today, I would pay much more. I would guess that no matter how old you are, you would pay a great deal to avoid regret.

So, how would you allocate your emotional dollars?

Avascular Necrosis, Osteonecrosis

Avascular necrosis or osteonecrosis is the death of a segment of bone due to loss of blood supply. Both bone cells are the bone marrow are affected. AVN is a common cause of hip pain in young and middle aged patients between 35-50 years of age. It occurs more in males. AVN leads to severe degenerative arthritis of the hip joint and accounts for 10% of total hip replacement cases in the United States. The femoral head is the most common site of atraumatic AVN. The humeral head is the second most common area.

2016-08-19-1471628054-4880708-AVN.png

Bilateral AVN occurs in 80% of cases and each side may present at a different stage. Usually the physician will check the other hip x-rays even if non-symptomatic.
The exact etiology and process of AVN is not known. Interruption of the blood supply of the femoral head is a common pathway. Genetic factors may also be implicated as the cause of AVN. Early diagnosis detects early stages of AVN that can be helped by a head preserving procedure such as decompression, bone graft or vascularized fibular graft.

2016-08-19-1471628074-2149814-AVN2.PNG

With multifocal osteonecrosis, three or more sites occur in about 3% of patients. It can affect the hip, knee, shoulder or ankle.
Patients with osteonecrosis at a different site than the hip should undergo an MRI of the hip to rule out asymptomatic osteonecrosis of the hip.
X-rays are initially normal. MRI is the best study when the x-ray is normal and AVN is considered or suspected. The AVN is seen on the anterosuperior aspect of the femoral head.
Trauma such as hip fracture or dislocation can cause AVN. The most common causes of AVN are steroid use, alcohol, gout, metabolic and genetic problems. The condition may be associated with a hypercoagulability state such as decrease in Protein S, Protein C, and Factor V Leiden (we routinely get that study with AVN cases).
The condition may also be idiopathic (without a cause), and then AVN is a diagnosis of exclusion.
If the Frag lateral x-ray of the hip shows a crescent sign, it means that osteonecrosis is present and probably advanced.

2016-08-19-1471628147-9928400-AVN3.PNG

Double density on MRI is pathognomonic for AVN. The patient may be asymptomatic and may present with dull hip pain (anterior groin pain) or severe arthritis pain due to collapse of the joint. With early arthritis, the patient will have a decrease in the internal rotation of the hip. On the x-ray, the patient will have a flattened contour with a collapse of the femoral head and decreased joint space. If the joint surface is intact, without collapse, core decompression or vascularized bone graft is helpful. If the joint is collapsed, arthroplasty is the procedure of choice and rarely an osteotomy is done.
Bisphosphonates are used in early stages of AVN. It prevents femoral head collapse; however, the results are controversial.

2016-08-19-1471628187-5055232-AVN4.PNG

Rule out other causes of hip pain such as gout, PVNS, femoral inguinal hernia, rheumatoid arthritis or stress fracture of the femoral neck.

Rosie Perez Wants To Understand Why Anyone Would Vote For Trump

Rosie Perez has a question for anyone who plans on voting for Donald Trump in November: Why?

In an interview with Cafecito host Feliciano Garcia, during the League Of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) 87th national convention in July, the Puerto Rican actress-activist said she doesn’t quite understand how anyone could support the Republican presidential candidate but she wants to figure it out.

“I really, honestly, want to understand how can you support someone who said such racist comments, who said such hateful comments,” she explained. “How can we have that person represent us as American citizens? And that’s all I really want to say to those Trump supporters. I don’t hate you. I don’t think you’re ignorant. I don’t think you’re stupid. I just want to understand your choice, because I don’t understand it.”

Perez also had a few words for people who aren’t voting for Trump.

“I think that it’s really important to not make enemies because you’e adding to the hate,” she advised. “But open up a dialogue, open up a conversation with those people and say, ‘Why?’”

As for who she’s voting for and why, Perez is very clear: She’s with Hillary Clinton.

“She has put in the time,” explained Perez. “She has put in the work. She’s a person that says, ‘listen, I’ve made some mistakes and I’ve learned from them and I have grown.’”

Watch the video above to hear what else Perez has to say about the presidential nominees and more.

4 Principles To Help You Become A Power Couple

When we first fall in love, sparks are in the air! An incredible fireworks that only two people get to see… But many wonder, how do you keep it going when the fireworks vanish, when fights, trials and tests come your way? Well, we believe practicing these 4 principles can help you become a power couple and overcome the ordeals of life!

2016-08-17-1471468850-2894740-StrongRelationship.jpg

Principle #1: Have a Couple’s Vision

Couples with no compelling, aspirational and clear visions don’t tend to last. Of course you and us know several “unions” that have gone on for decades without any such thing. They’ve stuck (the verb seems appropriate here…) together in spite of passion, respect or love, for financial reasons, the kids or something else…

“Power Couples” all have a compelling, aspirational and clear vision of what they intend to aim for together. That’s what makes them stronger, inspire them to move forward and guard them against futile arguments that can turn into unproductive fights. Once you crystallized your vision, it will serve many purposes but the primary one will be to help you remember “why” you are together at the first place.

Principle #2: Taboo Talks

We all have taboos as individuals, stuff that we want to keep hidden under the rug for no one to see. Couples are no different, but when taboos remain unaddressed, they can turn any benign event into a big drama that could have been avoided in the first place. What are the taboos in your relationship? Is it a former lover? The fact that you are financially “better off” than your partner? Is it your kids versus hers? Or an unsatisfying sex life?

Whatever it is, unveil those taboos, talk about it and establish a satisfactory protocol between the two of you that will help you manage “potential dramas.” Such protocol could be as simple as saying:

“‘Hon, I think we are entering taboo territory here so let’s be cautious about what we are gonna say or do.'”

It could also be:

“‘You know what, this (fill in the blank) is totally off limits for me. I just want you to be sensitive about it because I am not ready to address it.'”

2016-08-17-1471469573-2873427-powercouple_1.jpg

Wonder Woman and Superman Power Couple

Principle #3: Use a Conflicts Resolutions System

The verb “conflict” is often defined as “to come into collision.” We’re sure you’ve been there in your couple. The thing is, it’s so easy to get irrational when conflict arises. Our experience has been that real conflicts happen when an important decision, one that will ultimately affect the couple and/or the family, needs to be taken. Just to name a few, it could be a career change, the purchase of a new home or the necessity to have an elderly parent move-in with the family. While this may sound simplistic, we have learned to manage conflicts with scorecards. Yes scorecards! Allow us to share a personal example here.

We have bought two homes together. As it seems to always happen with a couple about to make such an important transaction, each time we both had slightly different visions for the whole thing. So we established a scoring system that helped us keep our emotions in check! We individually made a list of criterions that were important to us: size of the house, airport proximity, garage, swimming pool, price, type of community, lot size, age of the house, distance to golf course, municipal taxes, etc. We then reconciled our lists, agreed to put points next to each criterion and total them up. Each time we visited a house, we would score each of them individually and then share our result. We also established that if our scoring system totaled a maximum of 100 points, the “passing mark” for any house to be considered would have to be no less than 70 for BOTH OF US. That type of system has made wonders in our relationship, not only with our real estate transactions but also with any other major decisions for which we wanted to leave our emotions aside.

Principle #4: Set your Couples’ Laws

Even Power Couples quarrel from time to time. There is nothing damaging about it provided you have boundaries that will protect and not jeopardize your relationship. Think of them as “Couples’ Laws” that must be established ahead of time before any arguments arise. This prevents sentiments to blind you from the issue at hand.
Examples of Couples’ Laws could be:

We will not interrupt each other when one’s giving his/her perspective.
It’s not about being right. It’s about getting to a common ground and resolve the problem.
We will be respectful and weigh our words before unleashing them so we won’t regret saying them.
Sometimes we will agree to disagree. This may mean we will step back, take the time to reflect and snooze on it a little…

The Unhappy Campaign Of Paul Manafort

WASHINGTON ― This spring, as he was becoming chairman of Donald Trump’s campaign, Paul Manafort told friends that the candidate knew all about his work for foreign leaders and thought the criticism he received for it was a “badge of honor.”

That was May. Now, in the heat of August ― after a series of investigative reports on Manafort’s activities in Ukraine ― he is on the losing end of a power struggle in the Trump camp.

The Republican presidential nominee has not stepped forward publicly to defend Manafort, and it’s not clear whether Trump knew that Manafort’s work might have had an unregistered (and therefore, potentially illegal) U.S. lobbying component.

Manafort may stay on as campaign chairman, but the operational power has shifted elsewhere.

The Ukraine implosion comes at the end of a particularly chaotic month, even by Trump standards, in which the campaign Manafort was ostensibly running committed mistake after mistake and plummeted in the polls.

Many of those mistakes were of the candidate’s own doing ― but they begged the question of whether Trump was being managed at all. Meanwhile, the campaign’s lack of a ground game, trips to non-competitive states and steady streams of Republican defections begged the question of whether Manafort was up to his job.

His enemies within the Trump circle, let by ousted campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, never thought so. Consistently, and often publicly, they worked to undermine whatever real authority Manafort had.

In an interview with The Huffington Post in late May, a confident-seeming Manafort bragged prematurely about his success. “This is not a hard race,” he said, citing Trump’s blue-collar appeal and Hillary Clinton’s unpopularity. Trump would not need to put a woman or minority on the ticket and would not need to significantly change his message or methods, just cut down on unforced errors and do a good job in the fall debates.

But on Manafort’s watch, the race has turned into a difficult, if not impossible, one.

Why?

For one, Trump remains unmanageable, especially when advised to rein in his pugilistic, if not deliberately offensive, campaign style.

Manafort had reason to know this from the start ― and reason to know that his advice would be ignored.

The taco bowl incident, trivial though it was, is one example. On Cinco de Mayo, Trump happened to be eating a taco bowl for lunch at his desk in Trump Tower. Manafort was in the office with other aides when a member of the family suggested they tweet a picture of Trump enjoying his “Mexican” lunch.

Manafort politely suggested that this might be seen as condescending and cautioned against it. The tweet went out. Trump himself was delighted by the resulting controversy. “The people who were offended were people we wanted to offend,” he later said.

A super-confident bearing is essential in Manafort’s main trade, which involves advising foreign authoritarian leaders on how to win elections using old-style American tactics.

But the fact is that Manafort, as shrewd and capable as he is, never managed a presidential campaign, or any high-level American campaign effort. He is a master of conventions and delegate counting, which is an insiders’ game. He is not an outward-facing message, media and U.S. voting expert.

And the leading authority on social media and politics in the Trump campaign is Trump himself.

“Paul’s knowledge, such as it is, is about 20 years old,” said a longtime adviser to Trump, who declined to be identified and is not in the Lewandowski camp. “He doesn’t know the new demographics or the new media.”

Manafort is not known as a debate prep expert, either, which is why Roger Ailes has and will continue to informally advise Trump on debate strategy and other messaging matters.

Manafort has not dismantled ― has not been able to dismantle ― the early staff that Trump assembled with Lewandowski, and Trump refused to help him do so.

Rather, the GOP presidential nominee maintains a floating array of power centers around him. His office can be crowded with sub-groups vying for attention, undercutting each other. He plays them off against each other, which allows him to keep his options open and deny chain-of-command responsibility that a hierarchy would impose.

The almost casual circumstances of Manafort’s hiring added to the uncertainty of who ran what. Trump had known him for years (Manafort has a condo in Trump Tower), and Manafort was recommended to Trump most forcefully and effectively by their longtime mutual friend, international businessman Tom Barrack.

Manafort is donating his services as chairman. It’s not clear why, except that it gives both him and Trump a reason to part ways if that ever becomes necessary.

Now, it may be.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

The Secret To A Life Of Grace & Ease

Ever wonder why so many people suffer? I have. I was one of those people who lived my life worrying about things, always in a constant struggle. I never believed life could be like it is now, filled with joy, abundance, grace and ease.

It took me a long time to get to the bottom of why I suffered. And there are many reasons that I’ve come across. But one of the biggest reasons was that I had a religious belief that said I am a sinner. I took that belief to mean that I am bad and not worthy of God’s abundance and love.

Over the years, I’ve chipped away at that old belief. I’ve read different definitions of what “sin” really means, one being an ancient archery term that means “off the mark.” But what I’ve learned through my own conversations with God is that sin means we are simply being human. And in our humanness, we disconnect from the love inside of us.

God is love. And love is God. To connect to God, you must tap into the love inside of you. Loving yourself unconditionally is the way there.

That means you have to get to know who you are. You have to take the time to look within and get in touch with what YOU believe, not what others tell you. You must give yourself and your feelings a voice.

Loving yourself unconditionally means you must be kind and gentle to yourself, no longer judging yourself.

Most of us have been taught to believe that if we love ourselves, honoring our thoughts, feelings, passions and dreams, we are being selfish. In other words, we are being sinners. And if we are sinners, we are bad. So to avoid our fear of God’s wrath, we continue to deny ourselves.

And, thus, we live in a perpetual disconnect.

As a result, we feel stressed out, competitive, depressed, angry, resentful, frustrated, alone and never “enough.” We believe our pain is caused by people and circumstances outside of ourselves, but our suffering is due to a disconnection from unconditional love.

You don’t deserve to suffer and struggle. You stop the pain when you stop seeing yourself as anything but love and give yourself permission to align with God.

You are reading this article because your spirit is calling you to move into alignment. That means no longer trying to be anything but you.

You say yes to love when you say yes to you!

If you’re like me and were raised with the belief that being a sinner means you’re bad, then chances are you’re trying to be someone other than who you are.

You’re not bad. You’re human. And to be human means you’re going to feel disconnected at times. You’re going to be “off the mark.” To get “on the mark,” you must accept that you are human.

It’s time to stop judging your humanness.

You are here to have a human experience. That’s why you’re on this planet! The more you can accept this and love yourself, releasing all judgment, the sooner you’ll move into unconditional love and align with God. It is in this alignment where you experience peace, joy, passion, playfulness and purpose. And with that inner abundance, you will attract unlimited outer abundance.

Love attracts love.

As you own this truth, your life will flow with grace and ease.

2016-08-17-1471451167-889330-Beachpurpletogoinblog.jpg

It’s time to stop hiding. To embrace your humanness you must get honest with yourself and honest with the world.

As you say yes to yourself, you live as an expression of God in human form. You live as unconditional love.

The next time you suffer emotionally, simply think of yourself as being “off the mark” of who you were created to be. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do to embrace my humanness and love myself unconditionally?”

As you give yourself full permission to love and accept yourself, you will raise your Worthiness Quotient to abundance. Miracle after miracle will show up. You’re suffering will end and you’ll open up to receive a life of grace and ease because you KNOW you are worthy of it.

The Linchpin To Balance: Boundaries

Setting and communicating clear boundaries is the fulcrum to creating sustainable balance in whatever way you define balance for yourself (and for your team if you are a manager). Odds are strong that when you are feeling out of balance, it has to do with values. Sometimes it’s because your values may feel threatened, or you have gotten away from them, and a lot of the time it is has to do with the boundaries you set (or don’t set) to protect and honor your values.

This is just as much true at work as it is outside of work. On a simple level, boundaries teach other people what your values are and how to treat you. Communicating your boundaries helps those in your life to be clear around how to treat you, what your limits are and how far you are willing to go (or not go) in certain situations and circumstances. At work, boundaries keep you clear on your business purpose, priorities, and time management. Regardless of whether or not they are talked about at work -boundaries exist in the workplace.

Boundaries are tricky because you cannot see, smell, taste, or touch a boundary, but you know when it has been crossed, and you know when you are in a relationship with someone at work who is crossing the line. A good indication someone has crossed the line with you is that you might find yourself pretending that you didn’t actually see what you saw or hear what you heard in order to avoid conflict or confrontation. For example, “I can’t believe he sent that as a text message!” or “I can’t believe he said that to the room of customers.” Or, “That’s not part of my job!”

Before you can set and maintain workplace boundaries it’s important to figure out what you need. For most people, not much conscious attention is paid to how, why and what boundaries we set at and about our work. Boundaries as they apply to work can be divided into team boundaries and individual boundaries.

At the team level the best example of a boundary is a job description. (We all know what happens when one is not clear — it causes confusion, frustration and the team is not very productive.) Other common boundaries include your actual work and workflow. Question to help define team boundaries include clarity around reporting structure and who generates assignments, which isn’t always the same in many offices. Also worth considering is who sets your work priorities? (Answer: it’s a trick question as often times many people play a role.)

At the individual level the best example of a boundary is when you arrive and leave “work,” which in today’s world doesn’t always mean a physical space. Other commons boundaries include accepting meetings over lunch or breakfast, blocking time out for yourself to do work, attending (or not attending) every meeting you are invited to, how often you work from home and if you take vacation (and work from vacation).

When setting and maintaining boundaries, it is helpful to become aware of the choices you make around your needs and see where your actions support what you need. Answer the questions for yourself. Share the questions with your team and your family. Be consistent about the boundaries you set and have the courage to have the conversation.

Amazon.com Exclusive: Notes on Why Mars & Venus Collide by John Gray Over the last fifty years, life has become more complicated. Longer working hours, intensified by grueling commutes and more traffic, the increased cost of housing, food, and health care, rising credit card debt, and the combined responsibilities of work and childcare in two-career families are only a few of the sources of stress in our fast-paced modern lives. In spite of the new technologies designed to connect us, information overload and round-the-clock accessibility via the Internet and cell phones have reduced much of our communication to the equivalent of text messaging. We are stretched to the limit, with little energy for our personal lives. Despite increased independence and opportunities for success at work, we are often left with a sense of isolation and exhaustion at home. The unprecedented levels of stress both men and women are experiencing is taking a toll on our romantic relationships. Whether single or in committed relationships, we are often too busy or too tired to sustain feelings of attraction, motivation, and affection. Everyday stress drains our energy and patience and

Sorry Cam Newton, Racism Hasn’t Disappeared

For the past couple years, the black community has been trying to come to grips with the constant black deaths happening almost daily at the hands of law enforcement. These deaths have become the trending topics on social media and even on TV. It’s not hard to miss. Recently, in an interview with GQ, when asked about the scrutiny he faced during the last football season, Panthers football player Cam Newton said, “I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”

This is an obvious lie. Cam Newton was faced with so many racial slurs online from white football fans. I thought Cam was different. He was apologetically black on the field, as he dabbed on all the haters. Those same haters who called him names like N***er and Thug. Now, you’re acting like race is something of the past. If you don’t believe the criticism you faced wasn’t due to racism then I have a lake house to sell you in the desert.

Racism is so dominant in sports that I am honestly perplexed at your response. Did you forget that Don Imus called the Rutgers female basketball team “nappy headed h*es” on national radio? This was just 2007. Or in 2013, when Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper couldn’t get backstage at a concert, he decided to tell the bouncer,”I will jump that fence and fight every n**ger here.” Riley’s teammates were mainly black. Even your own sport is occupied by a racist. It doesn’t stop there: In Europe, sports fans throw bananas at black soccer players. This is almost tradition — racist but traditional.

Racism in America dates centuries back when Africans were transported from Africa and brought to America to become slaves. While they were slaves here, they became dehumanized. Slave masters would whip them until the skin on their backs cracked and call them every demeaning name under the sun.

It’s irresponsible for Cam to completely disregard this part of American history that makes up today. We have not moved on from the racism in the past. There are people still relishing in it.

Last week, George Zimmerman got assaulted for bragging about killing Travyon Martin. Last year, Dylann Roof walked into a Charleston church and shot innocent black people, men and women. He stated that he wanted to start a race war. That was 2015. We have not advanced at all when it comes to racism. To a certain degree, I can understand how money would blind someone as influential as you, but then I remember you’re a football player and I shouldn’t expect much from you.

When Travyon Martin was killed, the media worked day and night to victimize George Zimmerman. They released photos of Trayvon with his middle finger up and emphasized his size and height. In the eyes of many white people, black men are already threatening. They are viewed as less innocent-looking than their white counterparts. Their innocence is stripped away at a very young age. Children like Tamir Rice, who was playing with a toy gun and was killed. At just 12 years old, the police assumed that he had an actual gun, shooting him in seconds after spotting him.

Cam should take some advice from Simone Manuel. After winning the gold at the Rio Olympics, she gave a powerful message about racial interactions. She said, “It means a lot, especially with what is going on in the world today, some of the issues of police brutality,” she continued. “This win hopefully brings hope and change to some of the issues that are going on. My color just comes with the territory.”

Not only did she address police brutality, but she addressed that even she is affected by it because she is black. Cam’s total disregard for racial inequality in America is a slap to the face to all the men and women fighting for racial equality. It would be a lie to say we aren’t affected by race in present day America. Race is why black people aren’t getting jobs they quality for. It’s why black kids aren’t been giving equal opportunities at school and why there is no diversity in films.

This is not post-racial America. This is racist America.

Excellent Habits That Encourage Self-Love

Self-Love is all about building your self-esteem and self-image. One way to think about self-esteem is that you imagine an ideal self with all the hopes and desires you can conceive of and you compare that to where you are right now–your real self.

Then look at the distance between the two with an eye toward the future. Make sure your sense of self is not merit-based but an unconditional love. This is crucial to the core of your being. Although we credit ourselves with what we do, who we are deep inside is what self-love is all about.

The idea is to use your ideal self as your guide not expecting to reach it but to give you direction and a hopeful outlook. Then you’ve begun practicing self-love because you feel inspired to get to know yourself even better which is so important in order to expand your self-image and give yourself the internal validation you are entitled to from within. We often depend on others for validation, but it’s important to have one’s own internal compass.

Six Habits that Encourage Self-Love

1. Take each day one at a time and as you move through it. Pat yourself on the back for small and large accomplishments always keeping in mind that it’s not what you’ve done or finished but the process of expressing yourself in these different ways. This helps you recognize you are having a productive day, you like yourself, and you are building your motivation to continue along the way.

2. In the evening think about that day and assess your highs and lows. Think of what made you feel you love yourself for who you are. This is essential–who you are is good enough. Tell yourself that over and over. You may have had a brief encounter with an acquaintance who you gave a boost to or maybe you completed or made some headway on a task that you’ve been procrastinating. Even if all of the day wasn’t what you hoped for, be realistic and give yourself credit for what you’ve done. The internal you is good enough.

3. Allow yourself to be yourself moment by moment. Accept your strengths and weaknesses as part of your being and allow for mistakes and flaws along the way. Accepting yourself gives you a sense of stability and ease.

4. Develop some long range plans for going towards what might inspire you. It may be what you do in your work or something new you want to learn. Give yourself credit for being open minded about where you’re headed.

5. Don’t take yourself for granted. You’ve gotten this far in life with all its obstacles and challenges. Tell yourself that you’ve made it over some hurdles, even if they’ve been shaky at times and you can continue to meet your aspirations even if life doesn’t follow a straight line.

6. Take time to spend alone in sheer contemplation. Relax your shoulders and take a break even during hectic times. Those moments of introspection and easing into a comforting place will motivate you to continue forward building your self-love.

Here’s How To Make Lesbian Sex Safe(r)

Popular lesbian vlogger Arielle Scarcella is back with a new video that tackles safe sex and the lesbian community.

For this video, Scarcella enlisted the help of Christine, an openly gay gynecology physician assistant. She felt that a video like this was necessary because of the narrow ― and heteronormative ― lens through which sex education tends to occur in American public school systems.

“Growing up in school we are taught about safe sex, but only if you’re straight and cisgender,” Scarcella told The Huffington Post. “What about all the other genders, sexualities and sex acts besides penis-into-vagina? Lesbians ARE the least likely to contract STI’s etc, but does that mean we shouldn’t be safe and healthy?”

Check out the video above and educate yourself about lesbian safe sex and head here to see more from Scarcella.

What It’s Like To Experience Black Pain In Milwaukee

It is Saturday morning and I have spent all weekend packing up my belongings from my parents northside Milwaukee home into my first apartment. Nina Simone’s “Baltimore” is on repeat. My best friend and now roommate is on the opposite side of town doing the same; it will be her first time living on the northside. I have constantly reassured her that despite what we see on television, Milwaukee is more than its problems.

Fast forward to Saturday night and we’ve settled in. We enjoy a glass of champagne, toasting the first of many nights in our new home. I check my phone as I often do and see a friend and local community organizer sharing lengthy messages of anger and frustration. The gas station I normally go to Sunday mornings after church is on fire. Another black man has been killed at the hands of police and Milwaukee is experiencing pain unlike I have ever seen. I am not surprised at the death. I am shocked at the aftermath. In all my years in this city, the people of Milwaukee have never responded so blatantly.

It was a scene out of an all too real and all too good ’90s Spike Lee movie. The smoke was strong, but the smell was stronger. The city was, in fact, burning. I could almost feel the heat on my skin. While I was not in midst of the protesting, I saw friends, exchanged concerned expressions with community members and did the only thing I knew best: reported the narrative the way I saw it, in person and on social media.

Sudan Smith, brother of 23-year-old victim Sylville Smith, was hysterical. I only caught him for a moment when I said “I am here for you” to which he responded “I have nothing left.”

Sudan Smith, brother of 23-year-old victim Sylville Smith, was hysterical. I only caught him for a moment when I said “I am here for you” to which he responded “I have nothing left.” Many were there to express genuine anger; others were there to capture images for their social media. There was constant yelling. City bus shelters were pushed into the middle of the street and overturned, bricks and other objects were thrown in every direction, gunshots were fired, six businesses were burned and police cars were damaged.

It is Sunday morning and community and faith leaders and members began a community clean-up picking debris. Others meander and converse trying to make sense of Saturday night’s anguish. It is 4 in the afternoon and a man named Craig of the neighborhood has attracted a large audience in front of a group shooting dice. He delivers an impassioned speech how blacks have gone from being identified as slaves to indentured servants to willing laborers as though history is somehow trying to diminish our struggle or our work ethic. Fast forward a few hours and a march has begun. A candlelight vigil was held. Brothers and sisters of different ethnicities, religion, etc. have gathered to pray in hopes to heal the community.

What was a peaceful setting soon is loud and claustrophobic. For a moment, all you hear are police sirens. We see the discharge of officers in riot gear from the city buses. We have been told the National Guard is activated and ready to support the police department if things get out of hand. It is 11 p.m. and we hear back-to-back popping sounds. I have never heard the sound of a gun so close. Bricks are being thrown at police and gun shots can be heard in the surrounding area. A police officer and an individual that was shot are both hospitalized. Several arrests have been made, and the anger is heavy. The presence of officers in heavy riot gear causes an untrustworthy atmosphere. It is shortly after 1 a.m. and a car is burning blocks away. The city is tired, yet resilient.

It is difficult to be a black journalist on days like this. We are taught our grief comes second to our stories to produce unbiased work. I have spent many days on frontlines and on the streets of the movement at the expense of falsified narratives by media personnel who don’t stick around long enough to hear the entire story. Being media is forcing me to see my city and my people in a new lens. While I had an emotional connection to Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Alton Sterling, men who could have easily been my father, nothing felt as out-of-body as Sylville Smith. The proximity is still unsettling.

While I had an emotional connection to Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Alton Sterling … nothing felt as out-of-body as Sylville Smith. The proximity is still unsettling.

It is also difficult to be from Milwaukee most days. Our police chief Ed Flynn gave a four-step action plan for “not getting shot in Milwaukee” in May, before retracting his statements early summer. Our sheriff David Clarke Jr. believes the Black Lives Matter movement is a “hateful ideology.” Our governor Scott Walker has a history of proposing legislation impacting public sector employees.

Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the United States. Problems not only exist in racial relations, but housing segregation, employment, incarceration and education. The disparity in high school graduation rates between white and black students in Wisconsin is the highest in this country. Wisconsin suspends black students at a higher rate than any other state, all while noting that Milwaukee and Wisconsin lead the nation in black imprisonment.

The major issue is community relations between citizens and police. Several predominately black areas are over-policed and under-worked. Everyone has a comment to make about the neighborhoods they’re trying so hard to avoid. These neighborhoods need investment towards some kind of growth and progress; neighborhoods like 53206, America’s most incarcerated zip code.

I don’t know what the next step is, but I understand oftentimes events need to occur and anger needs to be manifested to address the pressing issues. Milwaukee has this safe communal space every year known as the Heal the Hood Block Party. We approach concerning topics with peace, unity and resilience. Dancing and food are always involved. We recognize and come to peace with the violence in order to build. And with pieces of our city burning, we are in desperate need of picking up the debris and rebuilding.

It is now early Monday morning and Nina’s “Baltimore” echoes in my mind. My city is asleep after two days of unrest and I am trying to find the words to eloquently explain these last 48 hours. I realize there is nothing eloquent about unrest, just waves of weariness. My Spotify playlist shuffles through nothing but sad morning love songs. I replace the names and pronouns of each sad song with Milwaukee. There is no time for inner-city blues. Soon the city will awake again and we will work to heal the hood.

Fierce Warrior Meets The Spiritual Teacher

Establishing some heaven on earth.

Linda: Long ago, there lived a fierce warrior who had gone bad and turned to thievery and destruction. He was the terror of the land. Strong men quaked in fear at the mention of his name. Whole villages would be evacuated when he and his men rode into town. All who dared challenge him were soundly defeated. Over the years, he amassed great wealth resulting form his plundering and looting. Yet, despite his massive accumulation of wealth, he was unhappy.

One day he confided to one of the outlaws of his gang, “I have everything a man could imagine possessing and more, but I feel something is missing. Could it be that there is more to the world than what can be seen, what can be possessed, what can be touched? I have heard that there may be other realms of existence that offer experiences more wondrous and fulfilling than anything that can be imagined by mortal beings. Can this be true?

The outlaw replied, “I myself cannot say what is true or possible, but there lives a man in a neighboring land who, it is said, is wise beyond words and knows of the great truths of Heaven and Hell.”

Instantly, the great warrior decided that he must meet this man and set out on a pilgrimage to find him. He and his comrade traveled for may days over high mountains and through pounding rainstorms until they finally came to the village in which the old man was said to live. At last, they located his home, a small, humble one-room cottage. The warrior took out his sword and banged on the door. “Come in.” said a soft but clear voice from within. The warrior pushed open the door and strode in to see a small old man sitting on a straw mat on the dirt floor of the cottage. “I’m here to learn about Heaven and Hell,” said the warrior, “Will you teach me?”

“Me teach you about Heaven and Hell?” exclaimed the old man, his voice now rising. “You must be insane. Why should I teach you about anything? Look at you; you’re disgraceful. Your clothes are filthy, you smell, and you’ve got no manners. Even your sword is rusty. Get out of my home before I throw you out!”

The warrior couldn’t believe his ears. No one had ever dared speak to him in this way. He flew into a mad rage and lifted his word about to strike down the old man. Then, just as the warrior was about to bring down his sword, the old man very quietly looked him straight in the eye and said, “That’s Hell.”

The warrior gasped with shock, recognizing the power of the truth that he had just heard. Realizing that the old man had literally risked his life to give him this extraordinary teaching, the warrior’s knees buckled under him and he collapsed on the floor in tears of gratitude. Then, with eyes filled with compassion, the old man looked a the warrior and said, “That’s Heaven.”

The story of the warrior and the old man redefines our traditional concepts of Heaven and Hell. We have been taught that Heaven and Hell are places in another time, place, or dimension that we will one day experience, depending upon how good or bad we are in this lifetime. In truth, none of us can know what it is that awaits us at the time of our death or thereafter.

As we try to live up to our internalized expectations of how we need to be in order to gain some final, ultimate reward or avoid some future punishment, we can miss the very essence of life. In our compulsive quests to achieve, succeed, or accomplish what we desire, or to avoid what we fear, we are not open to the moment-to-moment experience that life is. We are never where life is happening but always just a step or two in front of life or behind it. Only when we are in the direct presence of our life experiences, whatever they may be can we embrace the fullness and the joy that life is.

Only when we are unconditionally open to this moment, the here and now, can we be open to the joy of full-bodied aliveness that is our birthright. Only when we drop our internalized defenses can we touch the possibility of finding Heaven on earth. Heaven is the open heart of full acceptance. It takes us beyond fear, beyond anxiety, beyond the pain of unquenchable desires that can make our lives feel at times so Hellish.

What is perhaps most painful about living in the hell of anger, fear and desire, is that these states keep our hearts closed and there is not possibility in them for real connection with anyone, even ourselves.

Children of Alzheimer’s Patients Can Be a Valuable Resource for Researchers

You wouldn’t necessarily think Marty Reiswig is a perfect candidate for a study on Alzheimer’s disease.

He’s 37 years old and has no symptoms of dementia.

But Reiswig is exactly the kind of person Alzheimer’s researchers are seeking out for their long-term observational panels.

That’s because Reiswig’s father is currently being treated for early onset dominantly inherited Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers want to study people like Reiswig over the next couple decades to try to figure how Alzheimer’s develops, and if early treatments can be effective.

Some adult children of Alzheimer’s patients are reluctant to participate in such trials because of the time commitment, and out of fear of receiving their own diagnosis of the disease.

However, Reiswig said it’s important for people like him to volunteer because of the wealth of information researchers can obtain from them.

“Participating in the trial is my opportunity to help eradicate this horrible disease for my children and possibly the world,” Reiswig told Healthline. “I happen to be in an extremely minute portion of the population who can serve as incredibly helpful lab rats.”

Why it’s important

There are five major long-term Alzheimer’s studies involving the adult children of people who have been diagnosed with the disease.

One of the best known is overseen by the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, which was formed in 2001.

One of its chief projects is its ongoing study of people between the ages of 45 and 65 who have family histories of Alzheimer’s.

More than 1,500 people have been part of that study over the past 15 years. The mean age of the participants is 53, and the retention rate is 82 percent.

Only a handful of the participants so far have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Another 10 to 20 percent have shown some cognitive decline.

Sterling Johnson, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist who is an associate director at the research center, and a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, told Healthline the data this study provides is invaluable.

“The world needs the information we can glean from them,” he said.

The study participants do go through genetic testing to determine what risk, if any, they have for developing Alzheimer’s.

Johnson said participants have the option on whether or not to be told about their genetic results.
Over the years, participants give blood samples, get brain imaging, and in some cases even have spinal fluid collected.

They are informed about developments such as the growth of plaque and tau tangles only when these things are certain.

“We let them know only about things we are sure of,” said Johnson.

Researchers also collect data on the participants’ lifestyles, including information about diet, exercise, and alcohol consumption.

Johnson said researchers are hoping to learn two major things.

The first is how Alzheimer’s develops. These types of studies have already alerted scientists that growths such as plaque and tangles start appearing in a person’s brain 15 to 20 years or more before symptoms emerge.

Researchers hope the long-term studies will unveil exactly what causes Alzheimer’s, as well as why some people are more susceptible to the disease.

The second thing is whether early treatments can be effective. People in the study clinics can be given medication before symptoms appear to see if the treatments help delay or even eliminate the disease.

“It helps us to strongly shift the paradigm of instituting treatments,” said Johnson.

Another major research project in this field is the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer’s Network (DIAN). It is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the adult children of people with Alzheimer’s are recruited.

It’s also spawned a separate project called the DIAN TU. This international study is assessing the safety and effectiveness of two drugs for people who have a genetic mutation for autosomal-dominant Alzheimer’s disease.

Keith Fargo, Ph.D., the director of scientific programs and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association, agrees with Johnson that studies involving children of Alzheimer’s patients are crucial.

“We don’t fully understand why one person gets this disease and another person doesn’t,” Fargo told Healthline. “This type of research gives us a lot of good clues.”

He said these studies may eventually allow scientists to observe Alzheimer’s from start to finish.

“We can see things that occur over a life span,” he said.

The Alzheimer’s Association doesn’t conduct any of this research, but it does oversee a TrialMatch program that helps people apply for studies across a wide array of Alzheimer’s research.

Why they volunteer

Reiswig is part of the DIAN studies.

He has told researchers he does not want to know what his genetic tests results revealed — at least not yet.

“I don’t want to know yet. Maybe someday as I get closer to the age of onset — 50 in my family. I don’t want my wife, my mother, and most of all my children to find out I have it and bear that burden for more years than they have to,” Reiswig said. “If it comes, we will deal with it. In the meantime, we’re going to live well by doing good.”

Sigrid Knuti is also one of the adult children participating in research, although she’s a bit older than Reiswig.

Knuti, 74, and her sister, have both been part of the ongoing Wisconsin research for the past 11 years.

Their mother died in 2001 at age 87, a decade after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Neither Knuti nor her sister has any symptoms of dementia, but Knuti said the disease is still on their minds.

“We live with a 500-pound elephant in the room every day of our lives,” she told Healthline.
If she does develop the disease, Knuti can get some early treatment. More importantly, she hopes to be able to provide valuable information to scientists.

“It’s probably too late for me, but I don’t want my children to get this,” she said.
Johnson and Fargo both applaud volunteers like Reiswig and Knuti. They say it’s a time and emotional commitment that not everyone can make.

“You’re asking people to participate in a study when they don’t have any symptoms,” Fargo explained.

Nonetheless, Johnson said the Wisconsin research team doesn’t have too much trouble getting people to volunteer.

“They’re very motivated to stay in the study,” he said. “People want to participate and be part of the solution. They’ve seen the disease firsthand and want to do something about it.”

If some breakthroughs do come quickly, they might help someone like Chuck McClatchey of New Mexico.

The 63-year-old was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s two years ago. He has been participating in a clinical trial for an experimental Alzheimer’s treatment since November. He’s also part of the Alzheimer’s Association Early-Stage Advisory Group.

He volunteered because he wants to be part of the solution, too.

“The only thing I could try to do is fight back,” he told Healthline.

McClatchey has a 37-year-old son who is eligible to be a member of one of the adult children studies. However, McClatchey said he won’t advise his son one way or another.

“It’s up to him,” he said.

McClatchey said the DIAN and Wisconsin research, as well as the trial he’s in, are all important.

“Any information we get is good,” he said.

Knuti and Reiswig agree.

“At some point, some generation has to be the last,” said Knuti.

“Volunteering for these trials as a younger adult gives researchers the opportunity to detect Alzheimer’s much earlier and to possibly prevent it entirely,” added Reiswig. “Imagine a world where everyone grows old with their memories and faculties intact. What a beautiful thing that would be.”

Marion Christopher Barry, Son Of Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, Dead At 36

Marion Christopher Barry, the son of the dynamic former Washington D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, has died of a drug overdose, NBC Washington reports. He was 36.

NBC4’s Tom Sherwood, who has covered the Barry family extensively, confirmed the younger Barry’s death after speaking with Cora Masters Barry, the ex-mayor’s widow, on Sunday.

In 2015, Barry tried his hand at politics and ran for his father’s city council seat after the former mayor’s death, but he was unsuccessful, finishing in sixth place. Barry, who had commonly gone by “Christopher,” put his name on the ballot as Marion C. Barry.

That same year, Barry narrowly avoided jail time over a disruption at a Washington bank where he allegedly threatened a teller he thought had a grudge against his family and smashed a security camera with a trash can.

Since the early 2000s, Barry had trouble with “minor but serious skirmishes,” including driving and drug offenses, Sherwood said in an interview Sunday.

“Ever since his mother died in 2007, he lost one of the anchors of his life,” Sherwood said. Effi Barry died of leukemia that year.

Barry’s father, who died in 2014, was considered a Washington icon and eventually dubbed “mayor for life” when he left office in his fourth term.

After holding office for 12 years, the elder Barry was famously arrested in an FBI sting operation in 1990 for using crack cocaine  ― only to bounce back four years later to secure his fourth term as mayor.
