Elite ‘Bundlers’ Raise More Than $113 Million For Hillary Clinton

More than 1,100 elite moneymen and women have collectively raised more than $ 113 million for Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, according to an analysis by the Center for Public Integrity of information released this week by her campaign.

The list, updated monthly, includes more than 260 new bundlers who had not previously been disclosed by the campaign. These newly revealed fundraisers and donors include lawmakers, entertainment icons and titans of industry.

Among them: actor Ben Affleck, former Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester, former U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia of Florida, filmmakerGeorge Lucas, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, TV producer Seth MacFarlane, Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman of California, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, fashion designer Vera Wang and attorney James Zimmerman, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

A “bundler” is someone who collects checks from friends or associates and gives them to the campaign. They are often rewarded for their efforts with prize positions in the administration of the candidate they support. That is, if the candidate wins.

Also new on the list are U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, and his wife, Cynthia Blumenthal; Timothy Boyle, president and CEO of Columbia Sportswear, and his wife, Mary Boyle; Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings and his wife, Patricia Quillin; and actor Tobey Maguire and his wife,Jennifer Meyer.

By law, only registered lobbyists who bundle campaign contributions must be revealed — along with the exact amount they raise.

Individuals, or couples, who raise or donate at least $ 100,000 toward Clinton’s presidential bid have been dubbed “Hillblazers” by her campaign, which is voluntarily releasing their names but not the exact amounts they have raised.

Clinton’s Republican rival, Donald Trump, has not voluntarily revealed any information about his top fundraisers.

Former President George W. Bush and U.S. Sen.John McCain of Arizona both disclosed the names of their top presidential campaign fundraisers, while 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did not.

Under both Democratic and Republican presidents, campaign bundlers have often landed perks after their preferred candidate is elected, including plum ambassadorships, government contracts and access to exclusive White House meetings and social events.

As the Center for Public Integrity previously reported, dozens of top fundraisers for President Barack Obama were nominated for ambassador posts — often in western European capitals such as London, Paris and Stockholm.

Obama used broad disclosure categories when revealing details about how much his bundlers had raised. The largest category was simply “more than $ 500,000,” although sometimes fundraisers collected millions of dollars.

For instance, businessman Matthew Barzun — who served as Obama’s first ambassador to Sweden and now serves as ambassador to the United Kingdom — apparently raised more than $ 3 million for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee, according to information revealed earlier this month as part of the hack into DNC emails.

And investment banker Azita Raji, whom Obama nominated to be ambassador to Sweden in 2014, raised more than $ 4.7 million for Obama’s two presidential bids, according to documents obtained by the New York Times in 2012.

Unlike Obama, Clinton is revealing only one category for her Hillblazers, making it impossible to readily ascertain which ones are in a class above the rest.

Additionally, as of July, the Clinton campaign has been including on its list people who contribute or raise at least $ 100,000 for the Hillary Victory Fund or Hillary Action Fund. These two joint fundraising committees benefit Clinton’s presidential campaign as well as the DNC and state-level Democratic parties.

Donors can give far more to a joint fundraising committee than they could to a candidate’s campaign committee.

The Hillary Victory Fund alone benefits 38 state Democratic parties, in addition to the DNC and Clinton’s campaign — meaning an individual donor could currently cut a single check to it for nearly $ 420,000 and immediately make the list of Hillblazers.

As of June 30, elite fundraisers had helped Clinton raise at least $ 49.6 million — or at least 18 percent of the $ 275 million her campaign committee had raised at that time.

Bundlers were also responsible for about one-fourth of the first $ 47.5 million Clinton’s presidential campaign raised last year.

Staring Down The Epidemic Of Loneliness

I know the look when I see it. Eyes downcast, body either rigidly still or desperately fidgeting, discomfort clear. Some deep shame is working its way to the surface. Buried discomfort is forming into words. Sometimes the words are barely audible. Sometimes they’re shouted. I sit across from the shame, offering steady eye contact for the client who is ready to meet it. When given the opportunity, I meet the shame with acceptance.

As a licensed mental health counselor, it is my job to share space with individuals and hear their stories. Often these stories have shame woven into them. By “shame,” I’m referring to painful feelings of humiliation or distress, often turned towards the self (as opposed to feelings of guilt, which often relate more directly to behavior towards others). When we give voice to difficult things, as Brené Brown mentions in her TED talk, and when we meet them with empathy, we take away the power of shame.

But when shame festers without a voice, it can be isolating. And isolation, in turn, can lead to loneliness and feelings of worthlessness… which can continue to perpetuate shame. Loneliness and shame walk around, bullying our sense of human connection into hiding. In reading a recent New York Times article on the “epidemic of loneliness,” we learn that loneliness is an underlying cause of many chronic conditions, both physical and mental. How did we let this epidemic develop? Where have the points of connection gone, and what happened to the voices that help us to challenge shame?

It’s my opinion that we are isolated by our lack of ability to have difficult conversations. We are restricting our speech: we sometimes misuse trigger warnings as an acceptable form of avoidance; we question if an individual should be allowed to kneel in quiet protest during the national anthem at an athletic event; our social media and internet ads are tailored to match our own views, narrowing our perspective; we wonder if we can voice an opinion at a political rally without being met with physical violence. We are limiting our ability to connect with others in a respectful way. We are isolating ourselves from the person, and many times even disparaging the person, who holds a differing opinion from our own. And we are silencing our own voices out of fear of vulnerability and out of fear of retribution. We are, in effect, building the walls of loneliness and shame ourselves.

In counseling sessions, I find myself offering that steady eye contact to the clients ready to receive it. Along with an army of other therapists and helping professionals, I’m challenging shame with acceptance and staring down the epidemic of loneliness. Counseling provides an opportunity for the walls of isolation to disintegrate, for genuine connection and respect to occur in the midst of difficult conversations. It’s my hope to facilitate stronger human connections both inside the office and out, so that clients may share their shame resilience and foster connection in their own relationships.

I have hope for healing in my work and in our world. Together we can heal some of the divisions between people and within people that have allowed this epidemic of loneliness to grow. We need counseling for the safe space and genuine connection it provides. We need each other, to normalize difficult conversations with respect. We need ourselves, to find our own voices and activate our own ears. We will find connection in our disagreements as well as our shared interests, and we may well help to spread an epidemic of connection.

Evolution Plays Its Trump Card – It’s Time To Go Sane!

“America’s two political parties spent $ 4 billion on the last election and it worked — the American people were soundly defeated.”
— Swami Beyondananda

If you’ve been reading my stuff over the past months and years, you’ve often heard me quote Bruce Lipton: Crisis precipitates evolution. Given the current political shituation, you don’t need a weatherman to see that chances of precipitation are 100%.

If you doubt there’s a political crisis in this country, consider our 240-year journey from Franklin, Jefferson and Washington — to Donald Trump.

Talk about reality checks bouncing.

Talk about the lifting of the veils.

As more and more ordinary Americans are willing and able to look behind the “irony curtain”, Donald Trump’s appeal becomes understandable. We have a sociopathic system, so why not have a REAL sociopath in charge?

And … If you doubt that Donald Trump is the luckiest man on earth, consider this. Of all the years to run for President and of all the opponents, Trump gets Hillary.

There was a time – in the distant past seemingly – when a candidate was subsumed by scandal (or health crisis) that could put the future of the party or the country in danger, that individual stepped aside. That was back when people really did have a higher view and mission than their own personal ambition. Progressive voters saw that trait in Bernie Sanders, which is why nearly 50% voted for him (a higher percentage than Republicans who voted for Trump) against a candidate who was a “shoo-in”.

It’s not just the email scandal, where Hillary was let off the hook but not exonerated. It’s the feeling that public and everything else be damned, Hillary is committed to just one campaign promise: Elect Hillary Clinton president.

Those who attribute Hillary’s dislikeability to the vast right wing conspiracy aren’t paying attention. Nearly half the voters in the Democratic Party rejected her neoliberal policies and expressed the same distrust of her personal ambitions, agenda, and history as the right-wingers. Don’t blame Bernie or his supporters for that. And now with the issue about Hillary’s health and the mainstream media’s stonewalling of any questions about it (e.g., the firing of Dr. Drew Pinsky after he publicly questioned her health), it almost doesn’t matter what Hillary says. The latest polls show that nearly half of Americans think she is lying about her illness.

Meanwhile on the conservative side, with no clear front-runner with a stash of political cache, voters resoundingly rejected neocon Jeb Bush and stealth neocon Marco Rubio. The “upwising” moved forward as voters on both sides of the red-blue divide said NO to the corporate state.

And so — unless there is a REAL October surprise — we are in for the most insane campaign yet in history:

  • Donald Trump – the “lone nut”
  • Hillary Clinton – perched atop a criminally insane corporate state

OK, if that’s what’s so … so what?

What does an awakening voter who sees deadly flaws in both candidates do?

What Would SANITY Do?

We’ve been hearing for years the contextual question, “What would Jesus do?” and even “What would Jefferson do?”

So I offer my own question for setting the context for 2016: What would sanity do?

Before discussing strategy, let’s consider the concept of “sanity”. As Bruce Lipton and I write in Spontaneous Evolution:

“Being sane and being normal aren’t necessarily the same condition. Sanity is not a trait that can be tabulated by a show of hands. As psychologist and humanistic philosopher Erich Fromm reminds us, just because millions of people share the same vices doesn’t make these vices virtues. Sanity is derived from the Latin word sanus, which means “healthy.” By sharing a common root, the meaning of sanity and healthy are bound by a strong relationship. That which makes us healthier, makes us more sane. And vice versa.”

In looking at our current political and economic system from this standpoint, we have a system of “institutionalized insanity” where society’s institutions are clearly at odds with our wellbeing. Consider:

  • We have a hugely expensive health care system that is unhealthy and uncaring, run primarily for the benefit of drug companies, insurance companies and HMOs.
  • We have a food and energy system that systematically destroys our soil, water and air.
  • We have a military industrial complex with a huge secret budget, and we are the primary exporter of weaponry to the world.
  • We have an educational system that seems more intent on crowd control and cover-your-ass political correctness than in cultivating innate genius or a true moral compass.
  • We have a political system designed to benefit a small percentage of the uncommonly wealthy rather than the commonwealth.
  • We have a casino economy where there are a few big, big winners and mostly losers.
  • We have a banking system … well, as the Swami says, “I’m nostalgic for the good old days … when PEOPLE robbed BANKS.”
  • Oh, and here in the “land of the free” we have 5% of the world’s population, but account for 25% of the world’s incarcerated.

So why is this important?

Because, ultimately no political revolution or evolution — partisan or transpartisan — can succeed without striking, echoing and amplifying the chord of common virtues and values that are the EXACT OPPOSITE of what our civilization is promoting through its priorities and policies.

So the first distinctions that “sanity” must recognize are two key principles of political science:

  • Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
  • The tried-and-true way to keep corrupt power in power is “divide and conquer”.

On our recent visit to the small town of Fairfield, Iowa, we experienced first-hand the political divide that keeps the body politic virtually paralyzed, with well-meaning Americans unable to act in accord. We met and spent time with three kinds of folks, all of whom we consider friends and “co-hearts”:

  • Tie-dyed-in-the-wool Bernie activists
  • Hillary supporters who simply didn’t understand why Bernie was peeing on her parade
  • Social conservatives who felt they had “no choice” but to vote for Trump

Each of these factions possessed an element of truth and clarity, and each felt extreme frustration, disheartenment and disempowerment. Each individual we spoke with would have looked at the markers of institutionalized insanity cited above and agreed that each of these conditions is unacceptable.

If that’s the case, how is it that we are stuck with the choice — or lack of choice — we have now? And … what is the evolutionary response to the clear and present crisis we face?

A New President, or a New Precedent?

I still remember what it felt like being in Washington, D.C. in November of 2008, a week or so after Obama was elected. It felt like the liberation of Paris, the fall of the Berlin Wall, with people just about dancing in the streets. But a lad, and a lack. It didn’t take long for the hopium to wear off, and as the Swami said not long afterward, “the empire has a new face, but the same big fat ass.”

Bottom line is the bottom line: The POTUS is the CEO of the American empire.

Even had Bernie been able to prevail in the primaries, he would have been up against the same entrenched system, and the same divided (and consequently, conquered) populace all adrenalized about “identity issues” while the identical issues we all face and largely agree upon (the ones cited above) go largely unaddressed.

As the Swami said in Swami for Precedent: A Seven-Step Plan to Heal the Body Politic and Cure Electile Dysfunction (see here) a dozen years ago, “If we the people choose a new PRECEDENT, a new President will follow.” Sadly and truly, this idea is even more relevant today than it was during the Bush era. Back in those days, anti-war progressives shouted, “Impeach Bush!”

During the Obama years, conservatives cried, “Impeach Obama!”

It should be obvious that left and right need to come front-and-center to impeach the entire corrupt, pay-to-play system. And while many voters are choosing to “vote their conscience” in 2016 and cast their ballot for Green Party candidate Jill Stein or Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, neither of these third parties will ever be a first party in the United States. Why? Because despite having original and functional ideas, they are parties of ideology each identified with either the left or the right.

What we require now is a movement of We the People coming from “deep center” – not the muddled middle of a Michael Bloomberg seeking to preserve the status quo, but from a willingness to “face the music and dance together”. This requires a political, psychological and spiritual maturity the American people have not yet demonstrated, and yet must cultivate.

Evolution HAS played its Trump card.

We can no longer afford the dysfunction, and we can no longer hide behind safe ideological positions. Instead of polarizing around either/or, we must gather around both/and. As Bruce and I point out in Spontaneous Evolution, nature is progressive AND conservative. Survival and thrival require both growth and protection. Regardless of the outcome in November, awakening Americans from across the political spectrum must gather together in heartful, respectful conversation to cultivate and call forth our greatest intelligence. Instead of dueling dualities spending huge amounts of time, energy, money and resources to fight one another, these polarities of left and right must now become dynamic duo dance partners by considering together the functional aspects of both progressive and conservative:

How do we wish to progress?

What do we want to conserve?

Will we do it? Can we do it? They say necessity is the mother of invention, and considering what a “mother” our current political reality has become, we must necessarily evolve or risk losing the legacy our country’s founders (with all their flaws) called forth: Government of the people, by the people, for the people, where the government does our bidding, not the bidding of the highest bidder.

Only by graduating from being manipulated by one side or another, and by gathering together beyond the two parties and outside the boundaries of the mainstream media can we activate the true heart and soul of America, and for the first time in a long time, be a beacon to the world. If this sounds “utopian”, I refer you to the choice visionary philosopher R. Buckminster Fuller outlines in his book of the same title: Utopia or Oblivion.

Given THAT dualistic choice, may we choose wisely.

Piece Of Mind vs. Peace Of Mind

I have learned that more people love to talk than listen. Between the pundits, politicians, experts and social posters on the internet, everyone’s talking and expressing an opinion. But how many are really tuned in and listening?

These past few weeks I turned down the “noise” to address some personal matters that meant more to me than what people thought and said. I found it rather peaceful. No anxiety from the news and less time wasted scrolling through umpteen posts. I was able to have real conversations with people in person and by phone rather than just abrupt texts.

For years I was a better talker than listener. After my breast cancer diagnosis I was forced to listen to my doctors and to my own body that had been telling me for years to take it easier. I learned to ask questions and listen more intently. I also learned (slowly) to be quiet.

A skilled communicator knows how to express herself verbally and with purpose and how to listen with intent and sincerity. She doesn’t talk over someone or around them or hog the conversation. She knows how to punctuate a statement to get her point across and how to pause to elicit an effective response. Anyone can be a better listener. It just takes being quiet and focusing on the person in front of you or the situation around you with thought and without distraction. Many people practice their speaking skills, but it’s just as important to practice your listening skills.

Listening is not just about what you hear around you. It’s also listening to your inner voice. And it’s “listening” to someone’s body language and how he or she is expressing him/herself by remaining silent. Much can be heard without anyone saying a word if you are perceptive.

Being a good speaker makes people listen to you. Being a good listener puts people at ease.

It’s far better to give someone peace of mind rather than a piece of your mind.

Five steps to be a better listener:

  1. Disconnect from distractions around such as computers, iPhones, people
  2. Practice deep breathing techniques to help you concentrate and look the person speaking to you in the eyes
  3. Ask questions
  4. Repeat what he/she is saying to reinforce your concentration
  5. Count to 5 or 10 before interjecting your opinion into the conversation and avoid interrupting

The Spot-On Way Chris Pratt Handles Arguments With Wife Anna Faris

When Chris Pratt isn’t blowing up the box office fighting dinosaurs, guarding the galaxy or dating in space, he may or may not be taking lessons on how to be a dream husband to actress Anna Faris.

He can actually French braid Faris’ hair. He moonlights as the stunt dummy in his wife’s wrestling lessons. And then there’s this spot-on advice about how to deal with that late-night argument:

“Sometimes you got [sic] to go to bed mad,” he says in the Entertainment Tonight video below. “But at least just touch toes and say, yeah, I know. I know. We’ll deal with it later. I need to get some sleep.”

It’s as if he took the words right out of an expert’s mouth.

Hashing out your problems and clearing the air can strengthen relationships, Amanda Deverich, a Williamsburg, Virginia-based marriage and family therapist previously told The Huffington Post. But she added: “Never going to bed angry could elevate a fight and reduce the ability for a couple to resolve the issue.”

You’ll probably be better equipped to discuss your problems after a good night’s sleep, she said.

That’s because being sleep deprived can make you more likely to get emotional ― and less likely to respond in a controlled, appropriate way. Studies show the brain’s emotional centers are actually more reactive when we’re sleep deprived.

Other research suggests being sleep deprived interferes with the brain’s decision-making processes, inhibits our ability to focus and pay attention, and actually makes fights among couples worse.

We’ll go with Pratt’s take on that classic “don’t go to bed mad” advice: “I think that’s garbage,” the 37-year-old actor said.

Labour Relations in Central Europe: The Impact of Multinationals’ Money Contemporary Employment Relations

Labour Relations in Central Europe: The Impact of Multinationals’ Money Contemporary Employment Relations

Since 1990, foreign direct investment (FDI) has quickened economic modernisation in Central Europe. State of the art management techniques and cutting edge technology have been introduced in many cases. Labour Relations is an essential factor in the organisation of labour and production. At the start of the process industrial relations were characterised by the conditions existing under the previous planned economies or as with “greenfield” investments had to be entirely reconfigured. In the case of investments by West European companies this book reveals various emerging models of industrial relations but also a clear tendency towards company centralisation. For the time being the European Works Council still plays a subordinate role despite its potential fundamental role as mediator between East and West. Empirically nine corporations from the metal/automotive industry, the chemical, energy and food processing industries (with their subsidiaries in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia) are considered.

Federal Reserve Maintains Key Interest Rate In Another Nod To Slow Recovery

WASHINGTON ― The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it will leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged, likely sparing consumers and businesses an increase in borrowing costs for another few months.

The central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee kept the target federal funds rate — or the interest rate banks charge one another for overnight lending — at a range of 0.25 percent to 0.5 percent.

The federal funds rate is the benchmark for short-term borrowing rates throughout the economy, including auto loans and some housing loans.

Maintaining the current target federal funds rate almost certainly ensures that the cost of borrowing for consumers and businesses will remain low.

The decision reflects the central bank’s trepidation about the pace of economic growth, seven years after the Great Recession officially ended.

The economy grew at a disappointing pace in the first half of this year, increasing in size by about 1 percent. Recent job growth has been steady, but too sporadic to stem the historically high share of workers who have given up looking for work or settled for part-time employment.

The Fed typically raises its benchmark rate to prevent excessive inflation by cooling off the economy. But due to an inadequate job market and slow wage growth, core inflation, which excludes the volatile prices of food and energy, is still well under the Fed’s 2-percent target.

And even if Fed officials would not say as much, many Fed watchers point out that the imminent presidential election may have affected the Fed’s decision not to raise the key rate. The next Fed meeting when an interest rate hike will likely be on the table is in December.

“You do not want to do anything to change the political game, especially in an election as contentious as this one, and especially when there is a candidate who questions the Fed’s integrity and independence,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist of Redfin, an online real estate company.

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has accused Fed Chair Janet Yellen of keeping interest rates low to bolster President Barack Obama’s legacy. (Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, condemned Trump’s remarks, saying it is inappropriate for presidents or presidential candidates to comment on Fed decisions.)

I don’t think there is a single person who predicted before the recession that we would end up with consistently low rates.
Dan Alpert, Westwood Capital

The Fed’s decision was not a surprise to most analysts and investors. But the lingering impact of the deep recession has defied all expectation.

“I don’t think there is a single person who predicted before the recession that we would end up with consistently low rates,” said Dan Alpert, a fellow at the liberal Century Foundation and founder of the investment bank Westwood Capital.

Those low rates are the Fed’s response to an economic recovery that’s been slow and still isn’t robust enough to restore pre-recession job market health.

Many of the headline economic figures ― such as the 4.9 percent unemployment rate and record streak of consecutive monthly job creation ― paint a decidedly rosy economic picture. But those statistics obscure the fact that many workers have moved into jobs with lower pay or fewer hours, and still others have dropped out of the workforce.

An alternative measure of employment, the prime-age employment-to-population ratio, accounts for those who have stopped looking for work, and excludes workers under 24 and over 55 who may be out of work voluntarily.

That ratio has improved consistently throughout the current recovery. As of August, however, 77.7 percent of Americans ages 25 to 54 had a job, which is still lower than the percentage who were employed at any one time in the two business cycles prior to the recent recession.

Commentators celebrated the news that median household income jumped 5.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, but it still has not reached its pre-recession peak, let alone its all-time high in 1999.

And the gap between the wages of black and white workers, which narrows when tighter labor markets make it harder to discriminate, has remained steady or grown in recent years.

As a result of these job market weaknesses, consumer-driven businesses have performed inconsistently. The value of the S&P Retail Select Industry Index, a basket of major retail company stocks, has gone down about 5 percent from this same point last year.

The industry-wide trend is more or less consistent with the experience of Hobby Works, a privately-owned hobby retail chain with four locations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Hobby Works CEO Mike Brey told The Huffington Post in December that if sales growth continued, he planned to hire more people. Instead, sluggish sales have forced him to cut back on workers’ hours.

“There has not been a solid, steady improvement,” Brey said. “Things have been getting better in fits and starts.”

Things have been getting better in fits and starts.
Mike Brey, HobbyWorks

For Ron Nelsen, CEO of Pioneer Overhead Door, a garage door company in Las Vegas, the business climate is more favorable.

Nelsen, who employs five people including himself, lost two workers who went elsewhere for higher pay. One of them went to work for a competitor in the garage door industry, which Nelsen said is booming.

After making a profit in two of the past three years, Nelsen said he can weather an increase in interest rates on his business loans that might result from a hike in the federal funds rate. The biggest threat to his business is now competition, which “is the way it should be,” he said.

When the Fed raised the benchmark rate in December for the first and only time since December 2008, Yellen cited the desire to avoid having to increase it “abruptly” if inflation were to take off suddenly.

But there is another reason that Fed officials are eager to “normalize,” or raise, the key rate as soon as the economy permits it. A higher federal funds rate would give the central bank more ammunition to stimulate the economy when the next recession rolls around.

There has been greater pressure on the Fed not to interrupt the economic recovery, however, because Congress has refused to enact fiscal policies that would stimulate the economy, either through tax cuts or public spending, like infrastructure investment. That is why the central bank, like its counterparts in other developed nations, have earned the nickname “the only game in town.”

“Governments in the developed world ― especially in the U.S. and Europe ― are not doing what they need to do in order to spur growth in their economies,” Alpert concluded. “When the history of this period is written, that will be the theme of it.”

The Art And Science Of Why You Live Where You Live

The chatter in your head may be the real reason you live where you live.

When I first moved from Los Angeles to New York City a few decades ago, I had more than a few bones to pick with Los Angeles. This was before

how bad the traffic is

started off every conversation; before real estate prices in Venice were the highest in the whole city; and before the reality of a serious drought made pebbles hipper than a green lawn. My bones were personal and specific, as bones usually are that help justify a huge move — even if those justifications are simply excuses for deeper, even unconscious though still legitimate, reasons for leaving a place… or for moving to a new city.

For me it was time for a reinvention of self — and time was running out. I was coming to that age where if I did not make a radical adjustment… I very likely would never make it. I would have still had a life, possibly even a fatter financial life — but, at least for me, it wouldn’t have been the life that I aspired to; filled with the kind of work, interactions and cultural access I wanted and believed that I needed in order to fulfill my life’s destiny. Ultimately, however, there was a more specific reason, that is often overlooked, which I’ll get to later.

We all know that if you want to make God laugh, tell her your plans. And that might include your plans of where you want to live.

Some moves are a running away from difficult-to-confront aspects of self. No matter where you move to, those problems you fled from will inevitably resurface. They will also likely continue to plague you on some level no matter which location you wind up at, or how many times you move, until those issues are dealt with… or they deal with you.

Other moves are about escaping from conditions that are simply oppressive. In many ways that can be way less about where you go as much as what you are leaving behind. Aside from having to move to a specific location for work, career, education, or a health imperative (for yourself or a family member), ideally, choosing where we would actually like to spend a lifetime — or a good portion of it — has to do with matching an internal, complex matrix of personal style, personality modes and even brain wiring with your surroundings.

Winston Churchill famously proclaimed that

we shape our buildings, and afterward, our buildings shape us.

In an article in Psychology Today, called Does Your Personality Fit the City You Live In?
the author Ronald E. Riggio, a Professor of Psychology, in referring to the Oishi study above, says

The researchers suggest that poor person-city fit leads to uncertainty, and this lowers self-esteem.

But of greater significance to me, he points out that although we can be affected by our surroundings they don’t actually change our core personality.

…but, there are strong indications that the mix of individual variables with the physical variables of our surroundings can influence how we feel, what we do, and what we think about our lives.

I initially believed that I was leaving LA because of the LA cliches: its superficiality, surface reality, its obsession with status, fame and materialism. I carefully observed that there’s a very thin line between obsessive narcissistic soul searching and an authentic process of personal and spiritual growth. And as thin a line as it is, there can be a profound difference in one’s ability to attain a meaningful and lasting sense of fulfillment; and needless to say, sustain/maintain or create any relationship, especially if one is excessively solipsistic. And still today this seems more real than ever no matter where one is, even if LA tends to culturally emanate some of these attitudes and thus attract those who might also tend to be more vulnerable to this kind of self-centered excessiveness.

But these are just generalizations. I have great friends in both LA and New York, where I moved to and still live. In truth, what I’ve found that most fundamentally informed my move and more importantly, why I remained in New York is the conversation that I have in my head. Each city seems to be its own aquarium that we, its local citizens, swim in, fully immersed. Each aquarium seems to have its own conversations as part of its waters. It’s a fact that what I seem to talk about in Los Angeles, the general conversation, is actually different than what I tend to speak about in New York. Not always, of course, and not always better or worse, though the ones I have in New York I prefer. But it is the conversation that I have in my head, between my ears, that is most important of all — and I prefer that internal conversation in the New York waters. I’m talking about what I think about while walking down the street, or sitting in the subway or traffic, or lying in bed or staring out the window or sitting on a park bench. It is this version of myself that I like best. That doesn’t mean that there are not similarly rough waters no matter where I would live. It just means that I’ll deal with those challenges as my preferred, chosen self.

Baby Care & Child Health Problems

Baby Care & Child Health Problems

It is a fact that Baby Care begins right from the day or before a woman conceives. We all know that a mother plays the most significant role in a child’s life. So, in order to bring a new life on this earth, a woman must be physically and mentally ready to go through the pleasures and pain of the nine-month long pregnancy and the precautions and care that she should take throughout this period to give birth to a healthy and happy baby. Baby Care & Child Health Problems presents complete and exhaustive information about the various facets of Pregnancy, how a baby grows inside the mother’s womb and finally comes out of the mother’s body as a newborn with a bundle of joy for everyone in the family. It also deals in detail how an expectant mother should get ready by making a list and collecting all the essential items required for her and her baby before his/her arrival in the family. The book is different from other Baby Care books as it explains in a unique and stepwise manner the various phases of a mother’s life with the newborn, i.e, the first few weeks when a baby routine has to be planned, then the first three to six months, the food habits and ways of feeding, the sleeping patterns and duration, baby diapers, types of baby diapers and their correct usage, bathing the baby, keeping him/her in a clean and hygienic surrounding, etc. It also deals elaborately how to clean the baby’s hair, skin, nose, ears, trim his/her nails, the application of oil or cream on the baby’s body by a light massage, etc, in a detailed and systematic manner. Well, that’s not all. The book also provides valuable information regarding Premature Baby Care, i.e, care of the child which is born before the due period of nine months, his/her feeding habits, growth chart, health problems and various other needs with special tips from specialists and pediatricians. How to deal with the common health problems, such as flu, teething fever, common cold, nappy rash, loose motions or constipation,

Republican Voters Are Unifying Behind Donald Trump

Republican support for Donald Trump is at an all-time high, with GOP voters now just as unified behind Trump as Democrats are behind Hillary Clinton, according to the HuffPost Pollster polling average.

Polls have shown a tightening race in recent weeks, leaving Democrats on edge and concerned that Clinton is losing the comfortable lead she held over the summer.

There’s data to back up Democrats’ hand-wringing. Republican voters who had previously withheld their support for Trump have come around recently. Trump has managed to gain 6 percentage points among Republicans since mid-August, and he’s on an upward trend, according to the HuffPost Pollster chart.

This increased support could be due in part to the fact that Americans have been reading and hearing less about Trump in the news over the past few weeks, according to a Gallup poll. University of Virginia political scientists Larry Sabato, Kyle Kondik and Geoffrey Skelley have found empirical evidence to suggest a relationship between media coverage and voter support.

“[T]here appears to be at least a little bit of an inverse relationship between the relative level of coverage of Trump on the campaign trail and his polling margin. The more coverage, the worse his margin is, and vice versa,” they wrote last week.

The researchers found that this correlation was particularly strong between mid-August and mid-September, suggesting that Trump’s improved performance in polls could be attributed to less negative news coverage of the candidate.

Clinton has typically enjoyed an advantage against Trump in the polls, partly because she pulled a greater portion of her party’s vote than Trump did. And her support among Democrats has been relatively stable throughout the general election.

But the former reality TV star has finally caught up to her. Trump is now pulling 83 percent of the Republican vote, the same level of support that Clinton has among Democrats.

And with just 48 days left until the election, polls are becoming more stable and predictive as more undecided voters make up their minds.

Republicans pulled away from their party’s standard-bearer after the GOP convention ended in July. By mid-August, Trump’s support within his own party had plummeted to 77 percent. He was also dropping in national polls, losing badly in battleground states and even looking vulnerable in historically red states.

But Trump’s fortune seems to have changed since then: He’s trailing Clinton by just 4 points in national polls, and he’s even looking stronger in battleground states

And while Trump is being boosted by Republican voters, he has struggled to broaden his support among other demographics. However, he benefits from Clinton’s recent deficit among young voters who are turning to third-party candidates. Clinton has noticed the problem and made a strong push in recent weeks to win over more millennial voters. If she can address her weakness with young voters in the coming weeks, then she could see a boost in poll numbers.

This Woman Riding A Horse For A Final Time Will Make You Weep

A program in the Netherlands is in the business of granting small wishes to nursing home patients. The “Hidden Desires” project, an initiative of The Care Group and Green Cross Members Organization, aims to bring a small bit of joy to those who are dependent on care. Previous wishes granted have included bringing someone to their hometown for an ice cream cone, taking a man to a final sports game, and allowing a woman to have a beauty salon day before seeing her grandkids.

This time, the wish-recipient was an 87-year-old woman with Parkinson’s disease who was an accomplished horse rider when she was younger. Her wish was for “one last horseback ride.” Not an easy feat to arrange, as the Dutch video shows, but her smile at the end says it all.

Spoiler alert: Get the tissues ready.

Making Your Choice: Breadth Vs. Depth

Decision making processes in humans is both incredibly special and flawed. Every time we are faced with making a decision, a myriad number of potential calculations goes through our heads in order to create our desired outcome. Even when we don’t decide, we are still making choices about where we will contribute our time and energy.

In Mark Manson’s latest book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck“, he describes how often depth and breadth are mutually exclusive. One may be able to travel to 55 cities and have a breadth of experiences, but rarely has much depth within each city. One may have dozens of sexual partners, but rarely does this equate to much depth within a relationship.

While there are plenty of reasons you might feel unhappy or unfulfilled, it could be that you are searching for depth and breadth at the same time. Here are a few ways you can find out.

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

One of my friends is a coffee expert. He’s learned so much about coffee, he created the ultimate coffee guide to help anyone find great coffee beans, make cappuccino, butter coffee, cold brew, and the list goes on and on. Interestingly, if he tried whiskey and other alcoholic drinks, he wouldn’t have the same depth of knowledge.

He has chosen depth of knowledge within the realm of coffee and tea rather than a breadth of knowledge enjoying all beverages. Every time he makes a choice to drink coffee instead of an alcoholic drink is a choice for depth over breadth.

Here are some areas of your life where it would benefit you to take a closer look. This will enable you to better understand where you fall on the spectrum of breadth versus depth:

Intimate Relationships – As Manson mentioned in his book, your intimate relationships can be a choice of either breadth or depth. To some degree you may have both, but the two are correlated. If you desire sleeping with many partners from the opposite sex because of social conditioning or evolutionary hardwiring, this is a choice for breadth. If monogamy suits your tastes and you’d prefer to commit to one person, this is a choice of depth.

General Relationships – There are plenty of people who think slinging business cards like ninja stars is the way to meet and connect with others. This approach is one of breadth and isn’t inherently wrong, but rarely does it provide the same fruits as an approach based on depth. At least, each of the relationships (between friends, business contacts etc), must have a certain amount of depth to amount to anything.

Career Choice – Your career is a choice between breadth and depth as well. If you are choosing to specialize in something and understand that task deeply, it requires you give up many other tasks at the same time. A video editor can learn new skills, but oftentimes it behooves them to learn their skill to a degree of depth that most people don’t have.

Home Location – It’s common amongst digital entrepreneurs to be nomadic or travel to different cities often. While this can be fun, it is a breadth of experiences that many find to be fulfilling for only a small period. Jet setting entrepreneurs head from one city to the next in order to save money on their business and live exotic lives, but the reality is that they are choosing to reject depth in favor of this city hopping. It isn’t a bad thing, but it is a choice.

Wishful Thinking

Wishful Thinking

Jennifer Sharpe is a divorced mother of two with a problem just about any working parent can relate to: her boss expects her to work as though she doesn’t have children, and her children want her to care for them as though she doesn’t have a boss. But when, through a fateful coincidence, a brilliant physicist comes into possession of Jennifer’s phone and decides to play fairy godmother, installing a miraculous time-travel app called Wishful Thinking, Jennifer suddenly finds herself in possession of what seems like the answer to the impossible dream of having it all: an app that lets her be in more than one place at the same time. With the app, Jennifer goes quickly from zero to hero in every part of her life: she is super-worker, the last to leave her office every night; she is super-mom, the first to arrive at pickup every afternoon; and she even becomes super-girlfriend, dating a musician who thinks she has unlimited childcare and a flexible job. But Jennifer soon finds herself facing questions that adding more hours to her day can’t answer. Why does she feel busier and more harried than ever? Is she aging faster than everyone around her? How can she be a good worker, mother, and partner when she can’t be honest with anybody in her life? And most important, when choosing to be with your children, at work, or with your partner doesn’t involve sacrifice, do those choices lose their meaning? Wishful Thinking is a modern-day fairy tale in which one woman learns to overcome the challenges—and appreciate the joys—of living life in real time.

Lost Boy & other stories

Lost Boy & other stories

This anthology edited by Estelle Tang is a collection of stories submitted to the annual Margaret River Short Story Competition. Twenty-four stories make up this collection that includes works by internationally and nationally prize winning short story writers. The winning story, “Lost Boy” is the story of a mysterious boy who is seen at a restaurant, stealing leftover food. The story is at one level mysterious and at another real and haunting. Editor, Estelle says, ‘there was such a sense of control to the story, the writer knew exactly what she wanted to do with the scenes, and achieved it superbly’. The people we are born to know and the places we are born to see fix us in their sights, and that’s it. That’s where our stories come from. The stories here are all charged with a human affinity that reaches through the page. We might note how geography shapes them, and so heed the callous colonialism of mid twentieth-century Sri Lanka, as seen in Michelle Wright’s ‘To Call Things by Their Right Name’, or note the different kinds of mystery Australian visitors to Laos might find, as Beverley Lello evokes in ‘Scenes from a Disappearance’. Other stories are circumscribed by the strictures and saving graces of family, which can create such specific, affecting universes. Take the child narrator of Rosemary Allen’s ‘What Has to Be Done’, whose observations unwittingly create rents in the fabric of her familial life. And while the bizarre behaviour of a lost man in Susan McCreery’s ‘The Uninvited’ alienates and frightens us, his understanding of parenthood humanises him once more. We’re guided to still smaller spheres elsewhere in the collection: think of the atmosphere that produces its own pull between two people in conversation, as in Jeannie Haughton’s ‘Weight-Bearing Exercise’, or a girl communing with such an elemental force as the weather, which we witness in Cassie Hamer’s ‘Glory Season’.

Terrified Man Who Fled New York Blast Immediately Returned To Help Victims

In the immediate aftermath of the explosion that rocked Manhattan on Saturday night, a bystander who initially fled the blast returned to the scene and offered help to the victims.

Ramon Lopez, 43, calmed stunned individuals who had been hit by metal shards and led one of them to an ambulance, USA Today reports.

He also filmed the experience, which you can watch in the video above.

Lopez was on West 23rd and Sixth Avenue in the Chelsea neighborhood when a homemade explosive filled with shrapnel detonated. Lopez ran about a half-block until he decided to turn around and help.

The first person he spotted was a woman with bloodstained clothes and an eye injury. In the video, she can be heard saying: “What’s wrong with my eye? I heard an explosion and I fell.”

As Lopez leads her to emergency personnel, he speaks reassuringly to her: “I’m holding you,” he says. “You’re OK, nothing’s going to happen to you.”

He also ran into a woman who had a small spherical fragment lodged in her arm.

“I was telling [the victims] it was minor, but it was major,” he told USA Today of their injuries. “If I told them it was major they would collapse.”

Twenty-nine people were injured in the explosion, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 17. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted the next day that all the victims had been accounted for and released from the hospital. There were no fatalities.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, the 28-year-old suspect wanted in connection with the explosion, was arrested Monday morning in Linden, New Jersey, after a shootout with police.

Rahami is also believed to be linked to a small bomb that went off near a five-kilometer race in New Jersey on Saturday morning and an unexploded pressure cooker bomb found near the scene of the Chelsea blast.

Good News: You Aren’t A Biological Robot

By Deepak Chopra, MD and Rudolph E. Tanzi, PhD

We live in a golden age for neuroscience, and new findings about the brain emerge almost by the month. with huge government backing, one foresees the day, which could be quite soon, when every significant region of the brain is correlated with all the things we use our minds for. But as often happens with exciting frontiers, there’s a tendency to exaggerate the conclusions being reached.

In the case of neuroscience, the overreach is immense, because from many quarters brain researchers keep piling up evidence for very misguided conclusions. All revolve around the notion that we are prisoners of brain activity, in essence trapped inside the chemical and electrical activity of brain cells. Since this activity follows totally deterministic laws, it must follow that we do the same. In the latest wrinkle of “biology is destiny,” our brains have turned us into biological robots.

An extreme statement of this position recently appeared in the New York Times, where Robert A. Burton, former chief of neurology at the University of California San Francisco, writes, with damning finality, “. . . it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the experience of free will (agency) and conscious rational deliberation are both biologically generated illusions.”  This isn’t a novel idea, but the fact that others have touted it doesn’t add any validity.

On the face of it, Dr. Burton had to use “conscious rational deliberation’ to write his article, so such a thing obviously exists. He has trusted an illusion to tell him that his own thinking is an illusion, which is totally self-contradictory. If it seems puzzling that a biological robot, however complicated its hard wiring in the brain, could produce the output of Shakespeare, Mozart, and Rembrandt, the reason is that no robot did produce that output–the human mind did.

Getting neuroscientists to back away from the biological robot thesis is difficult, because the vast majority align themselves with an unproven assumption, that the brain produces the mind. Burton admits in his article that no one has any idea where thoughts comes from, yet he proceeds to assure us where they don’t come from, the mind. Brain is all; mind is simply one of its more intriguing byproducts. This is the fallacy of instrumentality, the same as saying that because musical instruments produce music, they also compose it. A piano doesn’t compose ragtime, and there is no proof that the brain produces thought.

All we can say with certainty is that the brain’s physical activity delivers precise correlations with mental activity. Burton makes much of the finding that if you electrically stimulate regions of the brain associated with disgust or empathy, people will experience those feelings. Yet long ago the pioneering Canadian neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield stimulated the motor cortex of patients undergoing brain surgery. As a result of stimulating neurons responsible for activating arm muscles, for example, the patient’s arm would fly up automatically.

Yet Penfield, a great proponent of mind over brain, was astute enough to ask the conscious patients if they had raised their arm. The answer was always no. Instead, patients said something like, “My arm just flew up.” This is enough to show that all of us separate the actions we freely choose from autonomic responses. We can’t be fooled about this. We never say, “My mouth ate some food” or “My hand wants to play the violin.” All the complicated findings in neuroscience are instrumental only. They tell us the equivalent of showing that music can’t be played without musical instruments. The piano is capable of nearly infinite patterns of notes when you consider tempo, dynamics, phrasing, melody, and harmony. This activity is the physical correlation of music, not music itself. The brain’s nearly infinite patterns aren’t thinking, either.

Until neuroscience can actually tell us where thoughts come from, until the link is made between the electrochemical firing of a brain cell and subjective experience, nothing valid can be said about how mind and brain are related. Their relationship has to be holistic.  Instead of insisting, as neuroscience does, that brain produces mind, or taking the opposite position, that the mind creates the brain, there is no cause-and-effect between them. They are simultaneous phenomena. A thought is instantly registered in the mental and physical domain.

Where did they both come from? A single source, which is consciousness itself. In fact, brain and mind are two aspects of this deeper reality, where consciousness is the only “stuff” that’s ultimately real.  At the moment, however, the concept that we are pre-determined, mechanistic brain puppets is pure science fiction. Decades ago someone joked that figuring out the brain is like putting a stethoscope to the outside of the Astrodome to figure out the rules of football. The fact that various brain experts now take the joke seriously indicates a bad misunderstanding of both brain and mind.

If there’s one thing you can count on it’s your friends showing up … for happy hour, bottomless mimosas, and Netflix and chill-ed wine night. But a night of revelry can lead to late-night binging, little sleep and a hangover the next morning, which do no favors for your health.

So why not shelf the boozy get-togethers every once in a while and try a healthier activity instead? Other equally spirited options like hiking, dance (class) partying, volunteering and paddleboarding make for great catch-up time with friends. Plus, they put the kibosh on all the extra calories (and other questionable decision-making that comes with having a few too many).

Consult this list of fresh ideas below next time you plan to meet up with the crew.

Daily Burn: 21 Signs You’ve Found Your Fitness Swole Mate

8 Healthy Alternatives to Boozing with Friends

1. Hiking
Lace up those hiking boots and hit the trails with a friend for a date that’s as good for your body as it is for your mind. Just an hour of hiking can burn anywhere from 400-500 calories, and trudging up hills and mountains can help tone and tighten those legs and butt. Being outdoors with nature can also help ease stress and anxiety. Try Fodors to find the best hike in your area.

2. Paddleboarding
Even if you don’t live by the ocean, you can hop on the stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) trend. You will need a lake or pool, though, of course. (Check out Yelp for local deals and classes near you.) The workout can be a fun way for you and your buddy to explore your digs by water while catching up. New Yorkers can visit ManhattanKayak.com for outings on the Hudson River. And for those on the West Coast, there’s no shortage of picturesque spots along the Pacific Coast. Want to take your pursuit of paddleboarding out of the country? Here are the best paddleboarding spots in the world.

3. Floating on Air
Massages and facials are so passé. If you’re looking for a truly unique deep relaxation experience, consider slipping into a sensory deprivation tank. Don’t believe us? We wrote a first-hand account about how amazingly de-stressing it can be. For about $ 99, you and a curious pal can float in a small pod filled with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salts and water for an hour. Check for offerings in your hood.

Daily Burn: 7 Camping Tips That Could Save Your Life

4. Cooking
Whether or not you’re a Top Chef in the kitchen, it’s always fun to learn a new dish – especially with a sous chef you know. Grab a friend and commit to a cooking class at a local culinary institute or through stores like Sur La Table. Or, hop on the subscription box bandwagon and make a meal together chez toi.

5. Volunteering
There’s nothing better for the body and soul than giving back to your community. There are many volunteering opportunities that are now accessible online. Find a project that you can do with a pal on sites like Golden if you’re in Los Angeles, or New York Cares for Big Apple residents. There’s always an opportunity to walk homeless pets at the local shelter, clean up a park close by or grow local gardens that feed low-income residents.

6. Rock Climbing
Even city dwellers can experience the great outdoors through programs like Discover Outdoors or REI classes and events. These programs offer transportation out of the city for you and a friend (or a group of friends) to do activities like rock climbing, white water rafting, and even camping trips if you’re ready to rough it. The long ride may be daunting, but it’ll mean quality time with the crew.

7. Packing Your Bags
Who says vacation has to revolve around drinking and snoozing all day? Enter: adult sports and wellness retreats. Grab a friend and escape your daily grind to a HIIT-tastic tropical beach or learn how to “om” alongside majestic mountain views. Whether you and your swolemate want to train for a triathlon together or play doubles on the tennis court for a few days, there’s an adult sports camp for you out there.

Daily Burn: Rock Climbing: 3 Ways to Climb Your Way Fit

8. Daybreaking
The more people you can gather for this sober, early morning dance party, the better. The wellness movement usually kicks off on a weekday at 6 a.m. with a large-scale yoga class followed by breakfast (often supplied by participating food and drink vendors). Then, the dance party starts. It’s not especially conducive to chatting, but who really cares when you can jam out to famed DJ’s like Jason Bentley?

Reince Priebus Hints At Penalties For Former GOP Candidates Who Don’t Endorse Trump

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday that GOP candidates who ran against Donald Trump and lost may face penalties if they don’t endorse Trump but try to take another shot at the presidency later.

“Those people need to get on board,” Preibus said of Trump’s primary challengers.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have yet to endorse Trump, despite the real estate mogul securing the nomination in July.

“If they’re thinking they’re going to run again some day, I think that we’re going to evaluate the process of the nomination process, and I don’t think it’s going to be that easy for them,” Priebus told CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

Priebus added that those candidates “gave [the RNC] their word” and used information provided by the party.

He said that the process requires candidates to endorse the nominee if they want to be on the ballot in certain states, which could complicate matters in 2020 or 2024.

“People in our party are talking about what we’re going to do about this,” Priebus said. “There is a ballot access issue in South Carolina. In order to be on the ballot in South Carolina, you actually have to pledge your support to the nominee, no matter who that person is. What’s the penalty for that? It’s not a threat. It’s just a question that we have a process in place.”

“And if a private entity puts forward a process and has agreement with the participants in that process,” he continued, “then those participants don’t follow through with the promises that they made in that process, what should a private party do about that if those same people come around in four or eight years?”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Foot Drop

What is foot drop?
Foot drop is the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot (Figure 1). A common symptom of foot drop is a high steppage gait, often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking. When a person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.

2016-09-15-1473960001-2882617-foot1.PNG

Foot drop usually results from an injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course. The peroneal nerve begins from the L4, L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve (Figure 2). The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.

2016-09-15-1473964839-1700154-foot2.PNG

In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg (Figure 3). The common peroneal nerve then travels anterior around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg, which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle (Figure 4).

Conditions Causing Foot Drop (Figure 5):
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop. Another cause of foot drop can be a lumbosacral plexus injury, pelvic fracture. Foot drop may also be caused by a sciatic nerve injury, like a hip dislocation. The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip. An injury to the knee, such as a knee dislocation may also cause foot drop. In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury. In established compartment syndrome, foot drop is a late finding. Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occurs in patients if fasciotomy is not performed. Fasciotomy should be done early. Four hours of ischemia may be tolerated but by eight hours, the damage is often irreversible.

Treatment of Peroneal Nerve Injury/Foot Drop:
If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed. EMG and nerve studies should be done for the patient. Recovery may take one year to 18 months. The big toe will be the last to recover. If recovery is not achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.

Students Share Why They’ll Miss Michelle Obama, ‘America’s Second Mom’

FAIRFAX, Va. ―Tamanna Kazi only started at George Mason University a few weeks ago, but she skipped afternoon classes to stand in a packed atrium and witness first Lady Michelle Obama speak on Friday.

Growing up as a colored child, seeing a colored woman being in the White House is like ‘wow,’” Kazi said. “That’s something that actually happened in the U.S., I can look up to someone who’s like me and not white.”

“She’s kind of like America’s second mom,” she added.

Several students who attended George Mason’s student center to hear her stump for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton described the first lady as a remarkably relatable role model, who was willing to take on issues that past first ladies and politicians had been hesitant to.

Among those issues is the way that Obama has dealt with race, Kazi said. In Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in July, for example, she described how she wakes up each morning in a house that slaves built and watches her daughters, “two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.” Obama also spoke candidly during a commencement speech at Tuskegee University last year of “sleepless nights” over questions she faced because she’s a black woman.

“She’s the one that’s talking about the Black Lives Matter movement, her and her husband, they know what it is. They know the struggle of it, what black people in America face,” Kazi said. “It’s relatable, it’s not fake.”

Charlotte Lombardo, a recent Mason graduate, said that the first lady, who attended Princeton and Harvard, had set an example for how women could lead.

She’s a woman for one and that’s really empowering. Forever men have had the upper hand, especially in politics, so it’s just nice to see something different and she’s actually excelling,” she said. “Hopefully she’s just spread the woman power onto Hillary. And that will continue.”

Even when the approval ratings of her husband, President Barack Obama, have fluctuated, the first lady’s have remained highObama was the most-liked speaker heading into the Democrats’ convention and her favorable rating rose to 64 percent after many praised her convention speech.  Chants of “four more years!” broke out after she reminded the crowd at Mason on Friday that her time in office was coming to an end.

Julian Berger, a sophomore studying finance, said that Obama has put herself in the public eye in a way that her predecessors haven’t. She further endeared herself to many when she sang along with host James Corden in a summer episode of “Carpool Karaoke” and joined in with boxed wine and self-checkout fun at CVS with Ellen DeGeneres. She made Oprah Winfrey and much of America smile when she said her husband was “swagalicious.”

“Honestly, I enjoy seeing her on any talk shows and when she did ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ that was like, ‘That’s my first lady.’ There’s no other first lady that I’ve seen that has gone out and done something so different,” Berger said.

At a time when the country seems more polarized then ever, the first lady has successfully transcended partisan politics, said Kathia Maradiaga, a senior studying health administration.

Asked what she thought the first lady’s legacy would be, Maradiaga had a simple answer.

“Love,” she said. “Definitely love.”

What All Frustrated Managers Need To Hear

Before LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner became such a vocal proponent of “compassionate management,” he once sat in a series of fateful meetings where an uncomfortable scene would play out. It’s a scenario many workers will recognize: a manager expresses his or her staffing frustrations by undermining the employee in question and making passive-aggressive comments at the employee’s expense.

Sharing his story with Oprah about one such meeting, Weiner says that the frustrations of this particular manager were getting to him ― and, likely, the entire team. So, knowing how damaging the situation could be for morale, Weiner took the opportunity to speak with the manager privately.

“We would have one-on-ones every now and again, and I said, ‘Hey, I’ve got to give you some feedback,’” Weiner says. “I said, ‘The next time you feel like making a joke at this person’s expense or you get frustrated and let them know in front of all of us, you should go find a mirror and express that frustration to yourself. Because you’re the reason they’re in the role.’”

What Weiner then suggested to the manager is something that anyone in charge of a staff could benefit from keeping in mind.

“If you don’t like the way they’re doing the job, take the time to coach them. If they’re not capable of doing the job the way you believe they should be able to do the job, find another role for them. And if that’s not going to work out, then transition them, and do it in a way that’s compassionate and constructive,” he says.

After that talk, the manager ended up thanking Weiner, whose advice had helped tremendously. That’s when Weiner had an epiphany of his own.

“I realized I was doing the exact same thing to someone on my team,” Weiner admits. “The exact same thing.”

In that moment, the executive made himself a promise that has led to his deep devotion to compassionate management.

“I kind of vowed that for as long as I was going to be responsible for managing other people, I was going to aspire to manage compassionately, where I wasn’t necessarily trying to have them do things the way I did them,” he says. “I was putting myself in their shoes, understanding what motivated them ― their hopes, their dreams, their fears ― and try to lead as effectively as possible.”

Jeff Weiner’s full interview airs this weekend’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. ET on OWN. You can also watch the most recent full episodes for a limited time on SuperSoul.tv, or catch up on past full episodes on demand via the Watch OWN app.

Another game-changing moment for Weiner:

Sleep Deprivation Is Killing You And Your Career

2016-09-16-1474055518-4204658-SleepDeprivationIsKillingYouandYourCareerHP.jpg

The next time you tell yourself that you’ll sleep when you’re dead, realize that you’re making a decision that can make that day come much sooner. Pushing late into the night is a health and productivity killer.

The short-term productivity gains from skipping sleep to work are quickly washed away by the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation on your mood, ability to focus, emotional intelligence, and access to higher-level brain functions for days to come. The negative effects of sleep deprivation are so great that people who are drunk outperform those lacking sleep.

Why You Need Adequate Sleep to Perform

We’ve always known that sleep is good for your brain, but new research from the University of Rochester provides the first direct evidence for why your brain cells need you to sleep (and sleep the right way–more on that later). The study found that when you sleep your brain removes toxic proteins from its neurons that are by-products of neural activity when you’re awake. Unfortunately, your brain can remove them adequately only while you’re asleep. So when you don’t get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc by impairing your ability to think–something no amount of caffeine can fix.

Skipping sleep impairs your brain function across the board. It slows your ability to process information and problem solve, kills your creativity, and catapults your stress levels and emotional reactivity.

What Sleep Deprivation Does to Your Health

Sleep deprivation is linked to a variety of serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. It stresses you out because your body overproduces the stress hormone cortisol when it’s sleep deprived. While excess cortisol has a host of negative health effects that come from the havoc it wreaks on your immune system, it also makes you look older, because cortisol breaks down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic. In men specifically, not sleeping enough reduces testosterone levels and lowers sperm count.

People who get enough sleep live longer, healthier lives, but I understand that sometimes this isn’t motivation enough. So consider this–not sleeping enough makes you fat. Sleep deprivation compromises your body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates and control food intake. When you sleep less you eat more and have more difficulty burning the calories you consume. Sleep deprivation makes you hungrier by increasing the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin and makes it harder for you to get full by reducing levels of the satiety-inducing hormone leptin. People who sleep less than 6 hours a night are 30% more likely to become obese than those who sleep 7 to 9 hours a night.

How Much Sleep Is Enough?

Most people need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night to feel sufficiently rested. Few people are at their best with less than 7 hours, and few require more than 9 without an underlying health condition. And that’s a major problem, since more than half of Americans get less than the necessary 7 hours of sleep each night, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Doing Something about It

Beyond the obvious sleep benefits of thinking clearly and staying healthy, the ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance. TalentSmart has conducted research with more than a million people, and we’ve found that 90% of top performers are high in emotional intelligence (EQ). These individuals are skilled at understanding and using emotions to their benefit, and good sleep hygiene is one of the greatest tools at their disposal.

High-EQ individuals know it’s not just how much you sleep that matters, but also how you sleep. When life gets in the way of getting the amount of sleep you need, it’s absolutely essential that you increase the quality of your sleep through good sleep hygiene. There are many hidden killers of quality sleep. The 10 strategies that follow will help you identify these killers and clean up your sleep hygiene. Follow them, and you’ll reap the performance and health benefits that come with getting the right quantity and quality of sleep.

1. Stay Away from Sleeping Pills

When I say sleeping pills, I mean anything you take that sedates you so that you can sleep. Whether it’s alcohol, Nyquil, Benadryl, Valium, Ambien, or what have you, these substances greatly disrupt your brain’s natural sleep process. Have you ever noticed that sedatives can give you some really strange dreams? As you sleep and your brain removes harmful toxins, it cycles through an elaborate series of stages, at times shuffling through the day’s memories and storing or discarding them (which causes dreams). Sedation interferes with these cycles, altering the brain’s natural process.

Anything that interferes with the brain’s natural sleep process has dire consequences for the quality of your sleep. Many of the strategies that follow eliminate factors that disrupt this recovery process. If getting off sleeping pills proves difficult, make certain you try some of the other strategies (such as cutting down on caffeine) that will make it easier for you to fall asleep naturally and reduce your dependence upon sedatives.

2. Stop Drinking Caffeine (at Least after Lunch)

You can sleep more and vastly improve the quality of the sleep you get by reducing your caffeine intake. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant that interferes with sleep by increasing adrenaline production and blocking sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain. Caffeine has a 6-hour half-life, which means it takes a full 24 hours to work its way out of your system. Have a cup of joe at 8 a.m., and you’ll still have 25% of the caffeine in your body at 8 p.m. Anything you drink after noon will still be near 50% strength at bedtime. Any caffeine in your bloodstream–the negative effects increasing with the dose–makes it harder to fall and stay asleep.

When you do finally fall asleep, the worst is yet to come. Caffeine disrupts the quality of your sleep by reducing rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the deep sleep when your body recuperates most. When caffeine disrupts your sleep, you wake up the next day with a cognitive and emotional handicap. You’ll be naturally inclined to grab a cup of coffee or an energy drink to try to make yourself feel more alert, which very quickly creates a vicious cycle.

3. Avoid Blue Light at Night

This is a big one–most people don’t even realize it impacts their sleep. Short-wavelength blue light plays an important role in your mood, energy level, and sleep quality. In the morning, sunlight contains high concentrations of this “blue” light. When your eyes are exposed to it directly (not through a window or while wearing sunglasses), the blue light halts production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and makes you feel more alert. This is great, and exposure to a.m. sunlight can improve your mood and energy levels. If the sun isn’t an option for you, try a blue light device.

In the afternoon, the sun’s rays lose their blue light, which allows your body to produce melatonin and start making you sleepy. By the evening, your brain does not expect any blue light exposure and is very sensitive to it. The problem this creates for sleep is that most of our favorite evening devices–laptops, tablets, televisions, and mobile phones–emit short-wavelength blue light. And in the case of your laptop, tablet, and phone, they do so brightly and right in your face. This exposure impairs melatonin production and interferes with your ability to fall asleep as well as with the quality of your sleep once you do nod off. Remember, the sleep cycle is a daylong process for your brain. When you confuse your brain by exposing it in the evening to what it thinks is a.m. sunlight, this derails the entire process with effects that linger long after you power down. The best thing you can do is avoid these devices after dinner (television is okay for most people as long as they sit far enough away from the set). If you must use one of these devices in the evening, you can limit your exposure with a filter or protective eye wear.

4. Wake Up at the Same Time Every Day

Consistency is key to a good night’s sleep, especially when it comes to waking up. Waking up at the same time every day improves your mood and sleep quality by regulating your circadian rhythm. When you have a consistent wake-up time, your brain acclimates to this and moves through the sleep cycle in preparation for you to feel rested and alert at your wake-up time. Roughly an hour before you wake, hormone levels increase gradually (along with your body temperature and blood pressure), causing you to become more alert. This is why you’ll often find yourself waking up right before your alarm goes off.

When you don’t wake up at the same time every day, your brain doesn’t know when to complete the sleep process and when it should prepare you to be awake. Long ago, sunlight ensured a consistent wake-up time. These days, an alarm is the only way most people can pull this off, and doing this successfully requires resisting the temptation to sleep in when you’re feeling tired because you know you’ll actually feel better by keeping your wake-up time in tact.

5. No Binge Sleeping (In) on the Weekend

Sleeping in on the weekend is a counterproductive way to catch up on your sleep. It messes with your circadian rhythm by giving you an inconsistent wake-up time. When you wake up at the same time during the work week but sleep past this time on the weekend, you end up feeling groggy and tired because your brain hasn’t prepared your body to be awake. This isn’t a big deal on your day off, but it makes you less productive on Monday because it throws your cycle off and makes it hard to get going again on your regular schedule.

6. Learn How Much Sleep You Really Need

The amount of sleep you need is something that you can’t control, and scientists are beginning to discover the genes that dictate it. The problem is, most people sleep much less than they really need and are under-performing because they think they’re getting enough. Some discover this the hard way. Ariana Huffington was one of those frantic types who underslept and overworked, until she collapsed unexpectedly from exhaustion one afternoon. She credits her success and well-being since then to the changes she’s made to her sleep habits. “I began getting 30 minutes more sleep a night, until gradually I got to 7 to 8 hours. The result has been transformational,” Huffington says, adding that, “all the science now demonstrates unequivocally that when we get enough sleep, everything is better: our health; our mental capacity and clarity; our joy at life; and our ability to live life without reacting to every bad thing that happens.”

Huffington isn’t the only one. Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, and Sheryl Sandberg have all touted the virtues of getting enough sleep. Even Bill Gates, an infamous night owl, has affirmed the benefits of figuring out how much sleep you really need: “I like to get 7 hours of sleep a night because that’s what I need to stay sharp and creative and upbeat.” It’s time to bite the bullet and start going to bed earlier until you find the magic number that enables you to perform at your best.

7. Stop Working

When you work in the evening, it puts you into a stimulated, alert state when you should be winding down and relaxing in preparation for sleep. Recent surveys show that roughly 60% of people monitor their smartphones for work emails until they go to sleep. Staying off blue light-emitting devices (discussed above) after a certain time each evening is also a great way to avoid working so you can relax and prepare for sleep, but any type of work before bed should be avoided if you want quality sleep.

8. Eliminate Interruptions

Unfortunately for those with small children, the quality of your sleep does suffer when it is interrupted. The key here is to eliminate all the interruptions that are under your control. If you have loud neighbors, wear earplugs to bed. If your mother likes to call at all hours of the night, make certain you silence your ringer before you go to bed. If you had to wake up extra early in the morning, make sure your alarm clock is back on its regular time when you go to bed. Don’t drink too much water in the evening to avoid a bathroom trip in the middle of the night. If your partner snores . . . well, you get the idea. If you think hard enough, there are lots of little things you can do to eliminate unnecessary interruptions to your sleep.

9. Learn to Meditate

Many people who learn to meditate report that it improves the quality of their sleep and that they can get the rest they need even if they aren’t able to significantly increase the number of hours they sleep. At the Stanford Medical Center, insomniacs participated in a 6-week mindfulness meditation and cognitive-behavioral therapy course. At the end of the study, participants’ average time to fall asleep was cut in half (from 40 to 20 minutes), and 60% of subjects no longer qualified as insomniacs. The subjects retained these gains upon follow-up a full year later. A similar study at the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that 91% of participants either reduced the amount of medication they needed to sleep or stopped taking medication entirely after a mindfulness and sleep therapy course. Give mindfulness a try. At minimum, you’ll fall asleep faster, as it will teach you how to relax and quiet your mind once you hit the pillow.

10. When All Else Fails: Take Naps

One of the biggest peaks in melatonin production happens during the 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. time frame, which explains why most people feel sleepy in the afternoon. Companies like Google and Zappos are capitalizing on this need by giving employees the opportunity to take short afternoon naps. If you aren’t getting enough sleep at night, you’re likely going to feel an overwhelming desire to sleep in the afternoon. When this happens, you’re better off taking a short nap (even as short as 15 minutes) than resorting to caffeine to keep you awake. A short nap will give you the rest you need to get through the rest of the afternoon, and you’ll sleep much better in the evening than if you drink caffeine or take a long afternoon nap.

Bringing It All Together

I know many of you reading this piece are thinking something along the lines of “but I know a guy (or gal) who is always up at all hours of the night working or socializing, and he’s the number one performer at our branch.” My answer for you is simple: this guy is underperforming. We all have innate abilities that we must maximize to reach our full potential. My job is to help people do that–to help the good become great by removing unseen performance barriers. Being number one in your branch is an accomplishment, but I guarantee that this guy has his sights set on bigger things that he isn’t achieving because sleep deprivation has him performing at a fraction of his full potential. You should send him this article. It just might shake something loose.

After all, the only thing worth catching up on at night is your sleep.

Black Church To Host Meeting, March In Honor Of Slain 13-year-old Tyre King

Columbus, Ohio, officials on Friday evening will discuss the shooting death this week of a black 13-year-old boy by a white police officer responding to an armed robbery call, to try to maintain calm, city officials said.

Mayor Andrew Ginther and Police Chief Kim Jacobs will answer questions “to facilitate healthy dialogue during a painful community tragedy,” said a statement from Central Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which is hosting the event. The officials will also march with members of the African-American church.

“It’s a very difficult time for the city, and we want to make sure we’re available to listen and answer questions,” city spokeswoman Robin Davis said.

Officer Bryan Mason shot Tyre King multiple times in a Columbus alley on Wednesday evening after the teenager drew what appeared to be a handgun, police said. It was later determined to be a pellet-shooting BB gun.

Police were responding to reports of an armed robbery. The victim told officers a group of males had demanded money, threatening him with a gun.

Soon afterward, officers found three males, including King, matching the descriptions of the suspects, police said.

While trying to apprehend King, Mason shot the teenager after he pulled out the BB gun, police said.

King’s family said in a statement released by a Columbus law firm it retained to investigate the shooting that witness accounts conflicted with the officer’s version of the events.

An internal police probe of the shooting and a separate investigation of the reported robbery are under way. A grand jury will ultimately decide whether Mason will face criminal charges, police said.

King’s death comes nearly two years after the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was black, by a white Cleveland police officer responding to reports of a suspect with a gun in a city park.

An investigation revealed Rice had a replica gun that shoots plastic pellets.

Rice’s death became a rallying point for the Black Lives Matter movement and was one of a number of deaths that led to nationwide demonstrations against the use of excessive force against minorities, especially young black men, by police.

Columbus has remained calm since King’s death. Family and friends held a prayer vigil on Thursday near where the boy was shot.

“My eyes are still swollen, and my head still hurts,” the Columbus Dispatch quoted King’s 13-year-old sister, Marshay Caldwell, as saying. “He’s really not coming back.”

When We Need Empathy From Our Partner But Receive Judgment

2016-09-16-1474032091-4619203-ScreenShot20160916at9.20.56AM.png

The other morning, I overheard the following exchange. Besides breaking my heart, it reminded me of the profound possibilities that relationships offer–for connection and also for pain.

The exchange:

Woman: I am really struggling with this presentation. I feel so burdened by it, like I have to cover every topic, and there are too many and I don’t know what to include. I’m overwhelmed and just don’t know how to do it.

Man: Why don’t you not prepare at all; let it happen organically. Just show up, trust that you know the material, which you do.

Woman: I don’t know how to do that. I need to have something to say to the 100 people that will be sitting there. They’re expecting a workshop.

Man: Why not just let people ask questions and let your audience’s curiosity be what guides you and the material you offer?

Woman (having an “aha” moment and becoming tearful): That’s it exactly. I don’t trust that anyone will or can help me; I don’t trust that anyone will take care of me, I feel like I have to do everything myself, create the whole thing in isolation. The idea that someone else could ask a good question that would help focus the material brings tears to my eyes.

Man: Exactly. So you’re a control freak.

Woman (closing her eyes, taking a deep breath and visibly gathering herself): When you call me that, it’s not helpful and actually it’s hurtful. What I need is for you to just support me–to hear the part of me that’s in pain, right now.

Man: So now you’re controlling the way I’m supposed to respond to you, how I’m supposed to be your therapist. It’s just what I said, you’re a control freak.

This sort of interaction happens far too frequently in intimate relationships. What started out as an open, safe, connected and potentially healing communication, turns into something hurtful, dangerous, and alienating.

The woman in this case was suffering and struggling to express her pain. She was trying hard to understand why her presentation was so difficult for her and to find some relief. And then something beautiful happened: she awakened to her deeper felt sense, and to what the real issue was. She could see her own fear and distrust, and the underlying beliefs that were imprisoning her and causing her to over-manage the situation and feel so stressed. It was evident that she felt great compassion for herself in that “aha” moment, in the newfound understanding of her own experience.

As a result of the first part of their dialogue, she got to live the profound relaxation and relief that occurs when we get clear on what is happening inside us, and discover the deep seated belief that is driving us. When we awaken to our own truth, to that which has been hidden from ourselves, and we do it with another person–it is a beautiful thing. When we go through such a process with our partner, there exists the possibility (and probability) for profound love, connection, and gratitude. There was so much good that happened in that first part of their dialogue.

Sadly, though, at precisely that moment of grace, when she opened to her truth, her partner entered that beautiful space with criticism, and used her pain as an opportunity to judge her.

What was remarkable however, and a testament to the human spirit, was how, despite being visibly hurt, she managed to keep her heart open, and to continue trying to get what she really needed. I must say too, that I could not help but empathize with that part of her that didn’t trust she could rely on anyone to truly help her. The very thing she feared was happening as she was naming it; she was begging for his help, for this vulnerable and wounded part of herself to be taken care of and understood. But in place of that help, she was receiving judgment.

It was also quite sad to notice that her partner seemed to genuinely want to help her, to encourage her to relax, but was unable to skillfully express that intention. He refused the opportunity to empathize with or comfort her vulnerability. His suggestions were on target, but they came from the wrong side of the emotional fence. His input was focused on obliterating the behavior that arose out of her distrust (and suffering), rather than taking care of the suffering itself.

What he wanted was, seemingly, the same thing she wanted, for her to feel like she could loosen her controls, feel less stuck and enjoy the process more. But the way he sought to accomplish that intention was to criticize her not-yet-awakened behavior and label her not-yet-perfected character, which didn’t help her (as she feared) and in truth, doesn’t help anyone.

Exposing our vulnerabilities and less evolved parts is scary and hard, and when we do have the courage to bring our challenges to the light, we want them to enter a safe space and be met with kindness. The great hope and potential of partnership is to provide this safe and curious space, where our less evolved parts can be understood for the fear and hurt that motivates them rather than being used to judge us for the kind of person they prove us to be.

It is not until the parts of us that are afraid, confused and weak are understood and supported that they have the space to relax, and ultimately, heal.

Every moment, every conversation, every interaction presents a choice: we can take the path of empathy or the path of judgment. We can relate to the vulnerability in another with a sense of curiosity and compassion, or, we can relate with criticism and judgment. In truth however, it not only feels better to receive kindness and support for our not yet perfected parts, but also to offer it. Try it out for a day: be mindful of your moment to moment choices between empathy and judgment–not just for others but for yourself as well. Try seeing from and through the vulnerability parts of yourself and others, and notice where it takes you, inside and out.

Science Says Selfies Can Make You Happier And More Confident

Step aside, selfie haters. That front-facing camera may be a secret to increased happiness, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of California, Irvine studied college students and found that snapping selfies and sharing images with friends had a positive effect on their psychological and emotional states. The results were published in the journal Psychology of Well-Being.

The study’s authors examined 41 college students ― 28 females and 13 males ― as they went about their normal school routine, including going to class and doing homework. (Let’s be real: That’s enough to influence anyone’s mood. You can only go up from there, right?)

The first week, which served as the control week, the students were told to document their mood three times per day using an app, writing down any events that happened that may have influenced how they felt. The next three weeks, the students were instructed to also take photos when they recorded their moods.

The volunteers were randomly assigned to a group that took one of three types of photos: A selfie in which they were smiling, a shot of something that made them happy, and a picture of something they thought would make another person happy, which was then sent to that individual.

At the end of the study, researchers had collected more than 2,000 mood documentations from all of the subjects. They discovered that positive moods increased in each group, but those in the selfie group reported becoming more confident and comfortable with themselves over time.

It’s worth noting that this is a relatively small study in terms of participants, and it had an uneven number of females and males. That can make it hard to be totally conclusive when it comes to a larger population.

But the research does provide some rather encouraging insight when it comes to technology, especially given the fact that a lot of previous research shows that it can take a toll on mental well-being.

“You see a lot of reports in the media about the negative impacts of technology use … but there have been expanded efforts over the past decade to study what’s become known as ‘positive computing,’ and I think this study shows that sometimes our gadgets can offer benefits to users,” senior author Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at UC Irvine, said in a statement.

Maybe Kim Kardashian really is onto something.
