Blaming Russia To Overturn The Election

When the Clinton campaign said it would join the recount in three Rust Belt states narrowly lost to Donald Trump, it didn’t say its motive was overcoming the vote totals but instead to find out if there was “foreign interference” in the election.

“This election cycle was unique in the degree of foreign interference witnessed throughout the campaign,” wrote Clinton campaign counsel Marc Elias. “The U.S. government concluded that Russian state actors were behind the hacks of the Democratic National Committee and the personal email accounts of Hillary for America campaign officials.”

During the campaign Hillary Clinton made no secret of where she thought that foreign interference might be coming from. She repeatedly blamed Russia for trying to sway the election.

When the Green Party’s Jill Stein launched her recount campaign in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania (the three states that gave Trump the victory), Stein’s announcement quoted her on her website as saying that because “foreign agents” had “hacked into party databases, private email servers, and voter databases in certain states, many Americans are wondering if our election results are reliable.” Stein’s page was then updated to eliminate reference to “foreign agents” in her quote.

But her recount petition filed in Wisconsin begins by saying “it was widely reported that foreign operators breached voter registration databases in at least two states and stole hundreds of thousands of voter records.” The petition then says the U.S. intelligence community is “confident” Russia was behind the hacks. There is “well-documented and conclusive evidence of foreign interference in the presidential race before the election … [that] call[s] into question the results and indicate the possibility that (a) widespread breach occurred,” Stein’s lawyers wrote.

In fact the intelligence community has never made public its evidence for independent computer experts to weigh in on. After the election, the Obama administration said it had no proof of Russian interference in the election tallies and that the results “accurately reflect the will of the American people.”

Citing the Press

Nevertheless, Exhibit A in Stein’s petition is an affidavit from Professor J. Alex Halderman, a professor of computer science at the University of Michigan, who alleges that Russia hacked the election. Halderman took part in a conference call with the Clinton campaign last month trying to convince the campaign to seek a recount, which it only did after Stein launched her effort.

Exhibit B from Stein’s petition is an article from Wired Magazine about Russia’s alleged role in the hack. Exhibit C is a New York Times article quoting DellSecureWorks, a private security firm, saying Russia was behind the hack of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. The company says Podesta clicked on a phishing link to gain access to his account. The Times relied on the company’s word that Russian spies were behind the phishing expedition, without also offering any proof that could be analyzed by other computer security experts.

Exhibits D through G — meaning all of Stein’s exhibits — are on alleged Russian hacking. One article is about an alleged attempted Russian hack of the 2014, post-coup Ukrainian election.

In her many media appearances since launching the recount campaign, Stein has carefully avoided mentioning Russia, or foreign agents, as she did in her initial web posting. But her petition is about nothing else but Russia’s alleged hacking of the election.

Stein left no doubt what one of the main aims of the recount is. On her web page she wrote: “Whether these machines were hacked by foreign or domestic agents **will be determined by using the mechanisms available to us** in each state we conduct a recount.”

Scott McLarty, the Green Party national media coordinator, told me in an email last week that the Green Party has “not taken a position on meddling by foreign agents.” Since then, top Green Party officials have distanced themselves from Stein, including her running mate, Ajamu Baraka.

“I’m not in favor of the recount,” Baraka told CNN. He said he told Stein “it was a potentially dangerous move” because it “would be seen as carrying the water for the Democrats.”

Margaret Flowers, the Green’s Senate candidate in Maryland, posted an open letter signed by several prominent party members saying, “While we support electoral reforms, including how the vote is counted, we do not support the current recount being undertaken by Jill Stein.”

While he first ignored, and then slammed the recount bid Donald Trump went to court in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on Friday trying to stop the recounts. So far the action has failed to stop them, but it could create a legal mess down the road. The litigious Trump can be expected to fight to the Supreme Court to prevent the vote from being overturned.

Lobbying the Electors

But since recounts that overturn the vote totals seem unlikely, it appears the Clinton campaign’s Plan B is to use any evidence of tampering that it can pin on Russia to lobby electors to change their votes to Clinton when the Electoral College meets in state capitals on Dec. 19.

Trump won the electoral college 306 to 232. That means 38 Republican electors would have to be convinced to change their vote to Clinton to reach the required 270 to win the White House.

Finding evidence of hacking of election computers that can somehow be blamed on Russia could be crucial for the Clinton team in their effort to convince electors to change their vote.

Russia has been blamed in the U.S. for many things and though proof never seems to be supplied, it is widely believed anyway. It has been accepted as fact by American corporate media, for instance, that Russia invaded Ukraine and had a hand in shooting down Malaysia Airlines Flight MH-17, though no conclusive proof for either has ever been presented.

Emotional appeals to elector’s patriotism and defense of the American system against interference by Russia could make a persuasive argument, however.

At an event at Harvard University on Thursday, Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager, repeatedly blamed Russia for hacking and tampering with the election. “Congress has got to investigate what happened with Russia here,” said Mook. “It is outrageous that a foreign aggressor got involved in our election.”

Robert Reich, labor secretary under President Bill Clinton and a Hillary supporter, argued that one reason the electors should flip to Clinton is to “stop foreign interference in an election.”

Quoting an article, he wrote on Facebook: “The Framers were extremely concerned about infiltration by rivals including Great Britain. In Federalist No. 68, Hamilton wrote that one major purpose of the Electoral College was to stop the ‘desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.’ He said that the college would, ‘Guard against all danger of this sort … with the most provident and judicious attention’ from the electors.”

Reich continued: “There’s incontrovertible evidence Russia interfered in the campaign by hacking the email accounts of top Democratic officials and cooperating with WikiLeaks’ parallel campaign to undermine Hillary Clinton campaign.” If such incontrovertible evidence exists, the Obama administration’s intelligence community has not shared it with the public.

Clinton operatives are also making her victory by more than 2 million popular votes part of their appeal to electors to switch sides.

Twenty-four states do not legally bind electors to the popular vote in their states. Elsewhere, electors face fines of about $ 1,000 if they vote against the will of the people of their states.

Laurence Tribe, a well-known and connected Democratic lawyer, has offered to defend pro bono any elector who breaks the law by changing their vote to Clinton. And there are plans to mount a constitutional challenge against the 26 states that legally bind the electors’ to their state’s popular vote.

Accompanying Media Campaign

The lobbying effort to blame Russia and get the electors to flip their votes is being accompanied by an intense media campaign.

In the announcement that the Clinton campaign would join the recount, campaign counsel Elias aligned the campaign with an unverified Washington Post article based largely on a shadowy, anonymous group that smears a list of 200 alternative media sites, including The Duran, for spreading Russian propaganda to influence the election, without providing any evidence.

“The Washington Post reported that the Russian government was behind much of the ‘fake news’ propaganda that circulated online in the closing weeks of the election,” Elias wrote.

A Huffington Post article said one of the eight reasons the electors should overturn the election is because “Russian covert action influenced the election.”

The staunchly pro-Clinton Daily Kos wrote that “Even if they never touched a voting machine, there’s absolutely no doubt: Russia hacked the election.”

If evidence of hacking is found in the recounts, the Clinton campaign would be greatly aided in lobbying electors with confirmation from the Obama administration that Russia was behind it. But on the day before the Clinton team joined the recount, the Obama administration appeared to throw a wrench into the plan to blame Russia.

The administration said it remained “confident in the overall integrity of electoral infrastructure, a confidence that was borne out,” adding: “As a result, we believe our elections were free and fair from a cyber-security perspective.”

The timing of that statement may have been intended to undermine Clinton as a split was reported between President Obama and Hillary Clinton over whether to have a recount.

Not satisfied with the administration’s conclusion, a group of Democratic senators on Thursday asked that information about Russian hacking should be declassified and released to the public.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest responded that the administration would take a look at the request. But he added that the intelligence community “did not observe an increase in malicious cyber-activity on Election Day from the Russians that was directed at disrupting the casting or counting of ballots.”

One time when I was twenty-five, I went shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We had been together for three years, and my dad kept asking when I would marry her. My friends kept asking. Her friends kept asking. Her dad kept asking her and she would tell me.

We were living together. And I liked her. Maybe I loved her.

But I started to shiver when I was looking at rings in the store. My friend who I was with took one look at me and quoted a lyric from an MC 900 Ft Jesus song: “Something’s gonna happen, and it’s probably not good.”

So I didn’t buy the ring. We didn’t get married. She moved out. We moved to different cities. I called her once a few years later, but now she’s not even on Facebook, and we haven’t talked since.

That sums up the twenties – everything you think is important and meaningful has absolutely no bearing on your future life.

I loved her. I had a job. I was writing novels. I had friends. I was a computer programmer.

Now, none of the above is true. (Oh, I have friends. Just different friends – 100% different).

And everything in my thirties – nothing is true anymore (except I have two kids still. Although now they are not babies. Now they are smarter than me).

I’m forty-eight now.

My most recent career change occurred when I was forty-seven. Before that, I started writing seriously (I wrote five very unserious books in my thirties) when I was forty-two.

In my twenties and thirties, my average weight was about 155 – 170. Now it’s 140. I write every day. I don’t obsess about money all day long. And I make bad decisions all day long – just like I did in my twenties.

The main skill I got between my twenties and now is that I bounce back from bad things faster.

I was very successful in my late twenties. And then a total failure after. Then very successful. And so on.

So that didn’t change. Only my ability to bounce back from really bad things. Horrible things. Things you wouldn’t want to wish on anyone, and yet they happen, in some form or other, to everyone.

So the only thing I can with full integrity say I wish I had known: nothing at all matters. Oh, and since nothing matters, once you realize that, you’ll start to bounce back faster.

And since nothing matters, you might as well be kind to people as much as possible. We can all laugh at the same joke at the end of this very long day.

This Number Can Say A Lot About Your Health. Do You Know What It Is?

First thing–figure out what your resting heart rate (RHR) is today: Pick a time when you feel relaxed (so not right after a tense meeting) and haven’t had caffeine within an hour or exercised within two hours, because both can leave your heart rate elevated. Then, find a pulse point on your neck or wrist, count the beats for 10 seconds and multiply the number of beats by 6.

If you got between 50 and 60 beats per minute, “that’s a very good range,” says Gordon Blackburn, MD, head of cardiac rehabilitation at the Cleveland Clinic. For every 10 beats it goes up, your risk of coronary artery disease rises by 12 percent, stroke by 5 percent and non-cardiovascular disease by 16 percent, according to a meta-analysis in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Once you’re over 80 beats per minute, the risk of those problems rises pretty dramatically.

Another study in Heart followed 3,000 men for 16 years and found that having a resting heart rate between 81 and 90 doubled subjects’ chances of dying during the study, while a RHR of more than 90 tripled it; maybe not surprisingly, higher RHRs were linked to poor physical fitness, higher weight and blood pressure and more unhealthy fats in the blood.

It’s important to note that these studies show a link between high RHR and health problems, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, but, says Blackburn, “there’s a consistent correlation.” Think of it this way: A high RHR doesn’t lead to health problems on its own, but it could tip you off that there are some underlying issues going on in your body that you should pay attention to.

Ask your doctor about your RHR; she can walk you through the many factors that affect it. (That’s actually good news, says Blackburn, because if you want to lower your RHR, you can come at it from a few different angles.) Exercise is key, and one study in the Journal of Human Hypertension found that high-intensity aerobic workouts are more effective in lowing heart rate than the same duration of lower-intensity exercise (which may be why elite athletes tends to have very low RHR). Getting stress under control can help, too, as can maintaining a healthy weight and logging seven to eight hours of sleep per night.

How China Could React To Trump’s Taunts, From The Best- To The Worst-Case Scenario

Donald J. Trump’s phone call this past weekend with Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen has caused so much consternation among political analysts and advisors to both governments that the reaction has been dubbed #TaiwanFreakout.

While Trump tweeted about it as if he had just picked up the phone when Tsai rang, casually overturning decades of protocol, the conversation was well planned, according to a Taiwan official. That planning didn’t involve contacting the current U.S. State Department, outgoing secretary of state John Kerry said on Sunday—another reminder of how far out on a limb the incoming Trump administration is willing to go on foreign policy.

“There are serious risks posed by his failure to take briefings by government professionals, and he appears to have little respect for the potential damage of actions taken without understanding long-standing U.S. national security concerns,” wrote Jeffrey A. Bader, a senior fellow at the John L. Thornton China Center, echoing the concerns of many.

Making things worse, Trump stirred the pot further by accusing China on Twitter of keeping its currency artificially low (the opposite is happening) and building a military complex in the South China Sea (which is true), thereby indicating that the Tsai call could be the beginning of a radical shift in policy, not a one-off.

Both global human-rights activists and hawkish U.S. Republicans concur—the long-running policy of carefully appeasing Beijing’s sensitivities has not had the results the U.S. has desired. But the danger of shifting policy so profoundly is that no one really knows how China, led by a president who has been ruthless in destroying his own political enemies and cracking down on Chinese citizens, will react.

Here’s a range of things Beijing could do, from the shrug-worthy to the downright terrifying.

Do nothing. China’s foreign ministry has already said that Trump was “tricked” by Taiwan into taking the phone call. Beijing could continue to peddle that line, despite reports to the contrary, in order to downplay the event and avoid having to react to it.

That’s not unprecedented. Last year, for example, after the U.S. sent a warship through disputed territory in the South China Sea that Beijing claimed as its own, Beijing did little more than warn the U.S. against “dangerous or provocative acts” in the future, despite dire predictions before the event. The fact that Trump has not taken office yet gives Beijing an easy out, although ignoring the behavior entirely could make the Xi Jinping government seem uncharacteristically weak at home. On Monday, China’s foreign ministry saidPresident-elect Trump’s team, is very clear about China’s solemn position on this issue,” but nothing further.

Punish Taiwan’s government. Since Trump is still not officially president, China can’t target him, but it could punish Taiwan to send him a message, said the nationalistic state tabloid Global Times. One way would be to pressure the few nations (including the Vatican City and Panama) that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan to abandon their ties.

Punish Taiwan’s businesses. It would be easier for Beijing to impose trade embargoes on Taiwanese goods than start a trade war with the U.S., Lian Qingchuan, a Chinese political commentator, told Quartz. Because China is by far Taiwan’s biggest trade partner, any changes in trade could “deal a huge blow” to the island, he explained. Taiwan exported $ 29 billion in electronics to China in 2015, its largest export. That’s more likely than introducing a trade embargo on the U.S., because China and the US are equally dependent on each other economically, Lian said.

Taiwan’s businesses in China could also suffer from the Trump-Tsai call. Speaking at a forum with Taiwanese businessmen after the phone call, Zhang Zhijun, head of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, warned against supporting Taiwan independence after returning “to the island with money earned from the mainland.”

Taiwan businessman are already lining up to show their support for Beijing. Seafood restaurant chain Hai Pa Wang bought an ad in a local paper pledging support to the “One China” principle on Dec. 5, while the Taiwan government denounced China’s “political intervention” in Taiwanese businesses.

Punish U.S. companies. Some of the U.S.’s largest companies, and biggest employers, are heavily dependent on the Chinese market, including Apple, Boeing, and General Motors. Lower-end luxury-goods makers like Michael Kors are banking on huge growth in China in the future.

One Chinese state-backed tabloid has already suggested China would stop buying Boeing planes, iPhones, and U.S. agricultural products if Trump put a high tariff on Chinese imports to the U.S. U.S. technology companies are already stymied by new, opaque laws aimed at making it more difficult for them to do business in China. U.S. businesses are forbidden from investing in certain sectors, and are having difficulty getting cash out of China. Any new restrictions or rules could hit their bottom line directly.

Still, “most viable options would hurt China more than the U.S.,” Christopher Balding, a professor of economics at Peking University, told Quartz. “Any trade war would cause much bigger disturbances for Chinese exporters in a weak economy than the U.S.,” he said, in part because U.S. companies manufacture for China in China, while very few Chinese firms manufacture for the U.S. in the U.S.

Sever relations with the U.S. While the idea that leaders from the world’s two largest economies would stop communicating entirely seems almost unfathomable, that’s what some Chinese political analysts are recommending. “If he continues to call Taiwan a country we [should] sever relations with him,” Shen Dingli, a professor of international relations from Shanghai’s Fudan University, said to the Guardian. “I don’t know what the government would do [but] I know what I would do: I will close our embassy.”

Since the U.S. recognized the Beijing government as the head of China in 1979, that has never happened, although the U.S. embassy in China was evacuated during the Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989.

Threaten Taiwan militarily. This may sound like an extreme step, but China’s stated policy on Taiwan is that it will use “non-peaceful means”if Taiwan declares independence, despite the fact that Taiwan has held free and independent elections for years. After the U.S. granted a visa to Taiwanese leader Lee Teng-hui in 1995, Beijing retaliated by holding military exercises near Taiwan that included missile tests.

“Another Chinese missile test in the Taiwan Straits is a possibility, so is official neglect of complaints by, or harassment of, Taiwanese in mainland China,” Chung Chien-peng, head of the political science department at Hong Kong’s Lingnan University, told Quartz.

Threaten the U.S. militarily. While no one believes that this is a likely direct outcome of the Tsai-Trump phone call, the potential for a military conflict between China and the US in the future seems to one reason for the “Taiwan freakout.”

China has the world’s largest military, by sheer number, with 2.3 million active-duty personnel compared to the U.S.’s 1.5 million, and has been modernizing its navy by adding hundreds of ships.

What Trump and his advisors may not understand is that the Chinese government “views the U.S. as an actual physical threat to the nation and system of government in China,” Balding said, and things between the two nations are “more tense than most people understand.” The only reason tensions have not been higher is “U.S. foreign policy has been so acquiescent for so long that there was very little to fight about.”

Heart Gift 5 – Nineveh, Antiquity, Friendship and Courage

ISIS in their sub-human brutality have blown up and damaged many parts of the almost 5000-year-old gem of antiquity, The City of Nineveh in Iraq. My Heart Gift today comes from the same letter I found last week from my father. In this section, he beautifully portrays his experience of Nineveh back in 1953. He also tells us of Issa who after knowing each other for just a day thought nothing of possibly sacrificing his life for him. This is a story of friendship, courage, antiquity and love of travel. So much about this story reminds me of my childhood and how dad would share stories about ancient civilizations and the virtues they held dear. I hope you enjoy it.

“Issa and I met in a brothel-cum-caff of Mosul, northern Iraq. One of those sleazy joints of Araby, serving tepid beer, soft drinks, strong coffee and tea spiced with the lure of belly-dancers going through copulatory undulations to the deafening staccato of flute, drum and wild ululation of tumescent lechers. His features were striking, and I felt I ‘recognised’ him from friezes in the B.M. and Bagdad Museum. “Are you Assyrian?”, I ventured. “Yes”, he smiled broadly. Soon we were chatting away like old friends. I like his easy banter. Issa (which means Jesus in Arabic – most Assyrians are Christians now) was a young railway engineer, with a passionate interest in Assyriology. The legendary courage and martial temper of Assyrians have survived to this day. When Iraq was a British Protectorate, many Assyrians served in the Imperial army. And when in 1941 Nazis instigated an anti-British uprising, a detachment of 600 Assyrians held out the British airbase at Habbaniyeh against assaults of the Iraqi army until relief was sent by the British.

The following day Issa and I walked across the bridge over the Tigris and into the desert to the ruins of Nineveh, the last Assyrian capital. Hardly anything survives there for the eye to fix on and set imagination aflame. An area of mounds and ridges, occasionally punctured by remains of a brick wall. But Issa’s instinctive feel for the place and evocative powers were uncanny. He guided me with the assurance, the quiet pride of a lord taking a guest over his domain. Weaving history, anecdotes, stories of campaigns and intrigue with description of temples, palaces, broad avenues, of regal circumstance. He led the way to Kuyunjik, the highest mound in the northern part of the city, where Sennacherib had built his ‘Palace without Rival’. Raised on a solid platform, it contained large courtyards and hundreds of rooms, adorned with friezes and brilliantly painted. Cedar beams supported ceilings, monumental doorways built in cypress-wood and other odoriferous timber, brought from four quarters of the far-flung empire, led from one chamber to the next. Gateways guarded by huge stone-carved ‘Lamassu’, the winged human-headed bulls. Graceful copper pillars resting on bronze lions. Foreign embassy officials, tribute bearers, stepped in awe down those courtyards flanked by towering figures of demonic guardians, to prostrate before the king who reclined on a stone throne carved with a relief which portrayed him standing in his war-chariot over bodies of slain enemies, as his soldiers pile up pyramids of decapitated heads before him. We rested where the vast library of over 25,000 cuneiform tests had stood. And ambled by the side of the palace where a large pleasure park was laid out, watered by aqueduct, planted with palm, vine and all manner of herb and fruit-tree. Here kinds found sport fighting on foot wild lions released from cages. The left arm, thickly wrapped up in black-goats’ hair yarn, was thrust forth to the beast’s maul, while the sword, held in the right hand, was plunged in its flank. Down what had been broad avenues we sauntered, Issa conjuring the gaudy splendours of the temple to Assur, the looming mass of the Ziggurat, the man-built cosmic mountain, like the biblical Tower of Babel. Past opulent dwellings of the nobility, ‘Sons of Creation’, as they were called, into the area busy with bankers, merchants, physicians, scribes and artisans, each organised into a guild and living in its own quarter. A city gorged with riches, the plunder and tribute of kingdoms under the Empire’s thrall. As Ashurbanipal’s inscription declares:- “Even menial workers and slaves received camels as a present, the brewer as baksheesh, the gardener as additional payment.” Issa evoked the broad avenues over which the invincible Assyrian armies set out on campaigns:- the light infantry – bowmen and slingers – clad in short tunies; the heavy infantry – lancers – in coat-of-mail and front laces half-boots; cavalry, riding bare back, but both horses and men clad in armour; the famed two-wheeled chariots, drawn by three horses and carrying driver, bowman and he ladders, fiery projectiles. Invincible they marched on incessant campaigns, against Cimmerians, Scythians, Hittites, Phrygians, Aramaeans, the Jews before the walls of Jerusalem, captured distant Thebes in Upper Egypt. And created arts of find expressiveness and sensitivity – a well-advanced culture. As Issa pointed out the still discernible outline of the outer walls, which, coated in limestone blocks, rose ‘sky-high’ and 7 ½ miles in circumference and entered through 15 gateways, no longer was Nineveh sandy mounds to me, but a city vibrant with life and enterprise.

So the day drew on. The dipping sun-soaked the mounds with the crimson of blood, pools of ominous dark on the lee-sides. Our shadows long across the sands. Somewhere across the dunes jackals’ shrill cachinnation. Issa’s voice came low, out of an inner reverie:- “Ah, those Medes… two months… of relentless storm and siege. Wild horsemen of the Zagros mountains, led by Cyaxares, soured with hatred, set on avenging his father, Phrortes, slain while leading his horses against us… And abetted by the Babylonians, led by Nabopolassar…” Issa jerked up as if stabbed, and his voice came forth now in an ill-supressed yell of anguish:- “Arthur, Arthur, hear the scream, the shriek of carnage? Of women and babies slaughtered. The whoop snort and roar of men who unyielding stood their ground?” Issa’s index jabbed the dusk, his other hand gripping my arm with fingers of steel. “Look!, there, there they must have breached the walls, that’s where the gore poured in. If only we could have thrown more men into that breach…” The wind ceased its parley with the sands, the jackals were not to be heard. And in the stillness the tumult came in flooding over me, rising the irrepressible rip of human agony, the cloying smell of sweat, blood, of fear – of human endeavour kneaded into dust. The ruckle of an Empire, but more so of one man, of one particular Man of flesh and bone, who must have lain dying close to where we stood. One Man of flesh and bone, an Empire ineffably more unique than those conglomerate empires built by men. Intensely, passionately my being went out to his, consecrating him in my living breast, yearning to eternalise him. Not as an Unknown Soldier. Oh no, I abominate what that stands for:- the enormity of robbing a Man of his uniqueness, his particularity, to turn him into a symbol, an abstraction. And whenever I see those edifices of stony bombast which nations erect, vile altars to herdish brutishness and folly, I sicken for the Dust entombed therein in usurped oblation to men’s vainglory. Ah, you warrior dying here amidst the conflagration engulfing the ‘Palace without Rival’. You Man of flesh and bone, your thoughts racing to your lived-ones’ fate, to the crash of your one known living world of Nineveh. Your rasping breath struggling to grip the air of life, to grasp your Life, your spark Divine. I shall never know where to buy your vegetables your were wont to go, and what you did for your tooth-ache. But like Jules Michelet with you I cry:- “Mon moi, ils m’arrachent mon moi!” ‘Nation'; ‘humanity’ – these otiose generics leave me cold. I love, I adulate life, the urge for immortality it enshrines, life in the singular, life in you, dying warrior of Nineveh. Not those generics empty of all but bombast, so ready to pimp as shibboleths, vehicles to men’s beastliness and folly.

On Kuyunjik we stood, Issa and I, hearts of lead, senses replete. Dimly I recalled a phrase form the bible – is it Ezekiel? -:- ‘Nineveh is laid waste; who will bemoan her’. But there silent we stood, Issa and I, and there we lamented.

The sack of Nineveh took place in the summer of 612 B.C. Babylonian chronicles record the event with laconic brutality:- ‘On that day Sin-shaw-ishkum, the Assyrian king was slain. The great spoil of the city and temple they carried off and turned the city into a ruin-mound of heaps of debris.’
The stars were bright, the phantasm gone, when Issa and I retraced our steps. Over the bridge across the Tigris and into the narrow, ill-lit streets of Mosul. And a strange twist of fate capped that day. Lost in musings, I walked oblivious of my surroundings. To be torn out of my reverie by the sight of Issa springing like a panther behind me. Whether through bravado or drunkenness, a motorcyclist has come speeding from round the corner behind, and, unable to control his machine, made straight at me. With his lunge Issa deflected the cycle inches from my back. He and rider went hurtling into a wall. Shouts, the curious come running. Issa manages to pick himself up, furious with the rider, who lies moaning. Visibly concussed, Issa bleeds quite heavily. The tough Assyrian, he insists on walking to the hospital; I come with him. The following day I visit him. Issa has internal concussion, lacerations over head and body and multiple fractures of the left arm. But grins happily from under the bandages. “My God, Issa, why dud you do it, you could’ve been killed!” “And more so you, you didn’t even notice the bastard coming at you.” Pause. “You’re my friend, so what’s the risk of a life to that?”, he shrugs his shoulders, winces with pain and grins. For a moment I look him straight in the eye. I know he meant it. No fuss, no bother, no empty mouthings. Just – ’friend’. In the absolute. Staunch, steady, abiding. “mutual”, I say to myself. Then aloud “Because of Kuyunjik and Assyria?”, I smile. “Yes, because of Kuyunjik. Fucking Kuyunjik! D’you what it means in Arabic, Hillock of the Little Lamb!!’ Hut, blasted Arabs. To us, Assyrians I prefer ‘Palace without Rival’. In the parks of which our kings fought lions on foot, thrusting the left arm into the jaw and eviscerating them with the right!”.

Issa my friend. Kuyunjik, Assyria, its gore and glory. 612 B.C., its demise. Dates and events sown down annals of history, remote history. But to me, to my life, this glorious life, vital beacons. To which I may well owe my life.”

The Success Of HIV Treatment Is Increasing The Risk Of Drug-Resistance

Global health agencies are succeeding in getting more people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy, a combination of drugs that suppress the virus to undetectable levels in the blood and reduce the risk of transmission to another person. But scientists are beginning to detect a disturbing new trend: The rise of drug-resistant HIV strains, especially in countries such as Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania and South Africa. 

Like tuberculosis and other diseases, drug resistant HIV strains emerge in part because a person doesn’t take the proper dose of drugs at the right time every day. In poor regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, this is more likely to happen, not because of a lack of will on the part of the patient, but because there are so few health clinics, or political and economic instability could make it exceedingly difficult to access life-saving treatment on time.

A World Health Organization report from July examined data from more than 12,000 clinics in 59 countries and found that on average, about 20 percent of people with HIV simply drop out of patient records one year after beginning ART treatment. About 73 percent of patients don’t maintain their treatment and 36 percent of clinics experienced drug stock-outs — when a pharmacy simply runs out of drugs.

All of these factors increase the risk of drug-resistance. And in fact, the report also found that HIV drug-resistance was rising. In 2010, the estimated prevalence of drug resistance was a moderate 7 percent in developing countries. That number is now at or above 10 percent for those starting ART for the first time, and up to 40 percent for those restarting ART. If health officials don’t find a way to put a stop to these multi-drug resistant strains, experts fear that they will spread much like drug-resistant tuberculosis has.

“Treatment of HIV is not a solved problem.” said Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine molecular sciences professor Dr. Charles Flexner, who is also professor of medicine in the Divisions of Clinical Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases. “There are still issues we need to wrestle with, and if we’re not very careful, we could wind up creating a situation where treatment of HIV, especially in resource-limited settings, is even more difficult than it is today.” 

The scope of the drug resistance problem 

Already, scientists estimate that drug-resistant HIV-1 strains could cause up to 425,000 deaths and 300,000 new infections in the next five years. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that as the world achieves the United Nations’ 90-90-90 goal by 2020 (90 percent of people with HIV diagnosed, 90 percent of diagnosed people on ART and 90 percent of people on ART with suppressed viral levels), over 3 million people, or one-third of all of those living with HIV that has not been suppressed, will likely have drug-resistant strains of the virus.

A recent meta-analysis illustrates the emerging problem well. Scientists examined 712 people in Sub-Saharan Africa for whom first-line ART treatments had failed, and found that 115 of them (16 percent) had mutations in their HIV strain that were linked to resistance against thymidine analogues, an older generation of ART. 

These 115 people were also more likely to be resistant to newer generations of ART. Ninety-three of them, for instance, were also resistant to tenofovir, which is central to the newer ART regimens in most HIV treatment plans and a worrying sign that modern first-line treatment won’t be able to help treat these people

What’s the WHO is doing about it

The WHO is developing a five-year Global Action Plan for drug-resistant HIV, focusing primarily on poor- and middle-income populations from 2017 through 2021. The organization published a draft of the plan online in July and invited public comment, but the plan has yet to be formally approved or launched.

It also released a report on the issue that warns that simply giving people WHO-recommended ART drugs, without proper medical care and follow-up, is not enough to treat HIV or contain the pandemic. In fact, it could be exacerbating drug-resistance. 

The risk of drug resistance will increase as global efforts to spread ART and preventive HIV treatments around the world are more successful, the WHO concludes. 

“While concerns about resistance should not stop the provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART) to all in need, the long-term implications of earlier initiation on adherence and drug resistance need to be closely monitored and responded to,” the organization said in a statement about the global action plan

The same standard of medical care globally is key  

The threat of creating drug-resistant strains of HIV was, in fact, one of the objections to widespread ART distribution in general, among both developing and developed nations. Thankfully, the world’s scientists and the U.S. government concluded that treating people with HIV as soon as they are diagnosed should take precedence above all other concerns.

This global consensus on ART, embodied most dramatically in former President George W. Bush’s 2004 President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, has saved millions of lives and prevented millions of HIV cases from taking root. In 2015 alone, for instance, the PEPFAR provided ART to 9.5 million people around the world, including pregnant women who were then able to prevent passing the virus on to their newborns. 

But just because more people in developing countries are receiving ART, that doesn’t mean they’re enjoying the same level of care someone in the U.S. might experience if they contracted HIV, explained HIV resistance expert Dr. Jonathan Li, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Americans with HIV, for instance, are tested frequently for both signs of drug resistance and viral mutations, so that doctors can further customize their ART regimen over time if a certain drug begins losing its effectiveness.

These kinds of tests are exactly what people in developing countries need to prevent the development of drug-resistant HIV strains, argues Ravindra Gupta, lead investigator of the meta-analysis that measured rising drug resistance in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

As it stands, most of the people who receive ART are treated in developing countries that don’t have the resources to provide tailored care. These HIV patients are also more likely to receive cheaper, more toxic drugs that are more prone to breed resistance, as opposed to the developed world’s less toxic drugs that are more forgiving if you occasionally skip a dose or two, Li said. Add the lack of medical tests to inconsistent ART access, and you’ve got a recipe for drug resistance. 

Patients are left on failing regimens for longer periods of time, meaning that their virus has more chance to develop resistance to the drugs that they’re on,” Li explained.

Court Delays GOP Lawsuit To Gut Obamacare

WASHINGTON ― A federal appeals court panel agreed Monday to the House Republicans’ request to hold off on further actions on their own lawsuit to eradicate financial assistance for the poorest people covered by Obamacare health insurance plans.

House Republicans brought the lawsuit in 2014, alleging that President Barack Obama’s administration unlawfully is spending federal money on these subsidies without a congressional appropriation. President Barack Obama’s Justice Department contested the case, but a federal judge sided with the GOP in May, prompting an appeal. 

But with President-elect Donald Trump poised to take office and with Republicans retaining control of Congress after Election Day, the House GOP last month asked the appeals court to postpone considering the case. Congressional Republicans are aiming for votes repealing key aspects of the Affordable Care Act next month and to work for up to three years assembling legislation to succeed it.

At issue is extra help for the lowest-income people who are enrolled in private health plans obtained via the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges.

In addition to tax credits the law provides to low- and moderate-income households to defray monthly premium costs, those at the lowest end of the income scale qualify for reductions in out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copayments.

The law requires health insurers to cap those costs for people who earn between the federal poverty level and 250 percent of that amount, or a range of $ 11,880 to $ 29,700 a year for a single person. The federal cost-sharing reduction payments are then made directly to the insurers to compensate them.

If the lawsuit ultimately were successful, health insurance companies would still be required to reduce out-of-pocket costs for these customers, but would no longer be reimbursed for their expenses, a loss of approximately $ 5 billion a year.

The majority of Obamacare enrollees, or about 7 million people, qualified for these subsidies this year.

A win in this lawsuit would give Trump and congressional Republicans a victory in their campaign against the Affordable Care Act, but at a severe cost.

Eliminating the cost-sharing subsidies would throw the Obamacare market into chaos, largely because insurers may be permitted to withdraw from the exchanges absent the cost-sharing patients, jeopardizing coverage for millions, including those who don’t even qualify for this financial assistance.

A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has now delayed the case until at least Feb. 21. After that date, the two sides have to submit plans for how they’d like the litigation to proceed, which is in line with the House GOP’s motion to the court last month. At that point, the incoming Trump administration will become the defendant in the case and will decide along with the House GOP plaintiff’s about the next steps.

“In light of public statements by the President-elect and his campaign, there is at least a significant possibility of a meaningful change in policy in the new administration that could either obviate the need for resolution of this appeal or affect the nature and scope of the issues presented for review,” the Nov. 21 motion says. “The status quo will be maintained during the abeyance period, because the district court stayed its ruling, permitting appellants to continue paying insurers the funds at issue on a monthly basis.” 

As president, Trump would have the authority to simply order these payments cut off. Trump has never taken a position on whether he agrees with House Republicans that the money is being spent illegally, or whether he concurs that the House of Representatives even has legal standing to sue the executive branch in a case like this. The Obama administration disputes both aspects of the lawsuit.

The Power of Choice

She didn’t know why she had that ache, that longing for something more. She found herself on her knees in her daughter’s nursery.

I knew I couldn’t walk back into the monotony of my life.

Kate knew her recruiting business didn’t feed her soul. But when she found herself coaching her candidates sharing with them the type of career they should have, she realized that wasn’t part of her business but really enjoyed it. So she launched Kate Butler Coaching.

I gave myself permission to really dream again. Where all things were possible, how would I show up every day? From that place, books showed up and my coaching business.

During this crossroad, she realized that some of the teachings of the world were not what she wanted her children to learn. So she published her bestselling children’s book, More Than Mud. Through the process of writing her books, she found a mentor in Jack Canfield and began studying his teachings. Once she started implementing the success tools she learned from him, she gave herself 3 months to go all in and work her business. So you might wonder what happened to her recruiting business since she had tapped into what she was called to do. I wondered the same thing. Kate still has that business. She understood that her recruiting business was a vertical to her next step.

One word that kept coming up for me during our conversation was authentic. In the coaching world, authenticity seems to be the buzz word of the day. But, Kate is the real deal. Her openness and willingness to share some of her struggles along with her successes was refreshing.

Kate describes how although we may live intentionally, sometimes a piece is missing. She offers a deep dive for people who are skimming the surface.

Set each day with an intention
. Before she gets on social media or responds to emails, she sets 3 things she wants to accomplish for the day and begin working on those things. This is not only for her business but her life. We often find ourselves responding and reacting to others before we meet our own needs.

Show your children life can be extraordinary.
One way is to live extraordinarily. Tap into those forgotten dreams.

You can choose your own joy.

Intention is more important than action.

So what are your forgotten dreams? Maybe they’re not forgotten, just delayed as mine have been. Ladies, it’s time to live extraordinarily. Dust those dreams off, set your intentions and make them happen. I know I will.

The Difference Between House Cats and Wild Cats

Humans have been hanging out with cat companions for nearly 10,000 years, but despite all the quality time we’ve spent with them, we still know very little about how kitties became domesticated.

Humans and canines have been living cooperatively for around 30,000 years, and pet dogs are considered fully domesticated. Cats, on the other hand, are only “semi-domesticated” according to Washington University School of Medicine’s Wesley Warren, PhD.

“They only recently split off from wild cats, and some even still breed with their wild relatives. So we were surprised to find DNA evidence of their domestication,” says Warren, who is senior author of an analysis of the cat genome published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Housecats vs. Wild Cats

Scientists learn about the genetics of domestication by assessing what parts of the genome are altered as a result of animals living with humans. The research team lead by Washington University compared the genomes of domestic cats to wild cats to look for specific areas of the domestic cat genome that experienced rapid changes.

They discovered that compared to wildcats, housecats have more mutations on genes involved in mediating aggressive behavior, forming memories, and controlling the ability to learn from either fear or reward-based stimuli. The cats with domestication-friendly gene mutations mated and passed those traits down from parent to kitten until there was a good-sized population of less aggressive cats.

Stephen O’Brien, another of the paper’s senior authors and chief scientific officer at the Theodosius Dobzhansky Center for Genome Bioinformatics in St. Petersburg, Russia, told Wired:

“There’s a big difference between house cats and wildcats. A house cat will sit on your lap, but a wild cat will hand you your behind.”

The researchers hypothesize that thousands of years ago, humans probably grew to appreciate cats for their rodent control abilities. In order to entice the kitties to stick around, the humans offered food rewards.

Cat Genome Project

This research is actually part of a larger cat genome sequencing project that began in 2007 to study inherited diseases in housecats. Some of those diseases are similar to human diseases, including neurological disorders, and infectious and metabolic diseases.

For this study, the researchers sequenced a female Abyssinian cat named Cinnamon whose lineage has been traced back several generations. Cinnamon’s sequencing provided the reference genome. The researchers also sequenced the genomes of certain purebred domestic cats and determined that certain features such as coat color, texture, and pattern, as well as facial structure and how docile a cat is are markers of their domestication.

They also compared the cat genome with the genome of other mammals, including a tiger, cow, dog, and human, to learn more about feline biology. The differences they discovered in the cat genome help explain why kitties are obligate carnivores, and how their eyesight and sense of smell differ from other animals.

For example, the researchers found specific fat-metabolizing gene mutations in cats and tigers that give them the ability to digest fatty meals of animal protein. These mutations aren’t present in the genes of cows and humans.

The team also discovered that cats have fewer genes for smell than dogs, probably because they rely less on smell to hunt than dogs do. But they have more pheromone-detecting genes that allow them to seek out mates, which can be a bit of a challenge for naturally solitary animals.

Kitties also have better hearing than most carnivores, and their vision is extraordinary in low light, which makes sense since they tend to be more active at dawn and dusk.

So while the genomes of housecats have changed very little since splitting from their wild counterparts, it’s still possible with sequencing to see markers of more recent domestication.

North Carolina Abortion Providers Fight For Ground Amid Growing Hostility

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina ― Just four weeks since Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, a number of states have become increasingly more hostile to abortion rights. Texas will soon mandate the burial or cremation of aborted or miscarried fetuses, and the state’s politicians have also introduced legislation that would ban abortion after 20 weeks, even in the case of severe fetal abnormalities. An Indiana politician announced in November that he plans to propose a total abortion ban in the state next month. Pennsylvania Republicans tried to pass legislation to ban abortions after 20 weeks.

A Trump/Pence administration is looking bad for women. The president-elect once said that women ought to be “punished” for having abortions, and the incoming vice president has advocated for the same fetal tissue burial or cremation procedure as the one that Texas will enact on Dec. 19. 

But the women and men on the ground who are protecting reproductive health care access have not been deterred ― even in the face of tremendous obstacles.

On Saturday, employees and volunteers at A Preferred Women’s Health Center Charlotte demonstrated the unwavering strength of the pro-choice movement. 

The presence of nationally known anti-abortion protesters like the Flip Benham cohort is a common occurrence at APWHC Charlotte, as are the mobile crisis pregnancy centers that park up the road from the clinic. But on this particular day, there were also upward of 2,000 people marching and praying in front of the clinic with Love Life Charlotte, an organization made up of over 40 local churches.

Still, the clinic administrators and local volunteers managed to make their patients a priority, despite being at the center of a chaotic anti-abortion protest.

The prayer march ― marking the culmination of Love Life Charlotte’s 40-Week Journey of Hope prayer march events ― was expected include 4,000 people. About half that number showed up.

“We definitely have had instances of [big] protester turnout in the past, but 4,000 is definitely the largest we’ve ever heard of,” APWHC administrator Calla Hales told The Huffington Post.

While she is accustomed to seeing 100 or so protesters on the street, the 2,000 who turned out on Saturday was unheard of, she said.

“As much as I hate to admit it, their presence will impact patients,” Hales said. 

And while the event was advertised as a “peaceful” one, meaning church members were not meant to protest or speak to anyone at the clinic, it did not turn out as such.

The sheer volume of marchers resulted in an overflow of participants on the street, blocking and slowing down traffic into the clinic. Some members also yelled aggressively within earshot of the center’s waiting room, and anti-abortion protesters of the Flip Benham variety ― many of whom are also members of some of the churches represented in the march ― were emboldened by the new audience, as evident from video of the event.

Just up the street from the clinic entrance sat two family-size RVs ― portable crisis pregnancy centers ― offering free services like sonograms and pre- or post-abortion counseling. 

Erin Forsythe, the executive director of Pregnancy Resource Center of Charlotte, told HuffPost that her center’s services, including the mobile CPCs which are parked outside APWHC six days a week, are “all about acknowledging that this is about [a woman’s] choice.” PRC is its own nonprofit organization, existing separately from the churches that protest, though Forsythe did say it was a Christian organization and “appreciative of other Christian pro-life groups.”

Another PRC staff member, Jill, shared the same sentiments. Jill said the group was “not here to take away a woman’s choice.”

In a brief tour of the mobile center, she called it a “condemnation- and judgement-free” space. The PRC staff is remarkably friendly and the mobile clinic is clean, warm and welcoming, with a small waiting area, a restroom, and a sonogram station in the back of the trailer. Staff members follow federal HIPAA privacy standards and offer confidential services ― and all sonograms are performed by licensed professionals, she said. 

The PRC trailer is especially welcoming considering the shouting protesters down the road ― but volunteer clinic escorts and pro-choice protesters say the center engages in some unethical behavior to manipulate women into declining an abortion. 

“Patients have been told that their pregnancy wasn’t ‘attached properly’ and that they would miscarry, so they should cancel their [abortion] appointment,” one volunteer clinic escort, who asked to remain anonymous, told HuffPost. “Another was told that her pregnancy was too far along for an abortion, and that she should cancel, too, even though it wasn’t” the person said. Some clinic escorts have also heard of PRC staff members falsely offering to check women into their APWHC appointments ― which causes the women to miss their appointments altogether and have to wait a week or so to reschedule. 

While there is no official research about the specific practices at PRC Charlotte, crisis pregnancy centers overall have a well-documented history of misleading behavior.

In January, a NARAL study reported that CPCs purposefully present themselves as health care providers to obtain new clients and push their own anti-abortion agenda (something that states like California are beginning to pick up on). 

“Their misleading practices may include questionable advertising tactics, providing dishonest or evasive answers when women call to inquire about their services or even selecting confusing locations or names that obscure their true agenda,” the NARAL report found. This includes false promises of miscarriage, lies about the abortion procedure and its effects and lies about how far along in her pregnancy a patient is.  

The trailers are strategically placed on the way to the clinic entrance, which clinic staff says causes immense confusion for the patients. Because of this, pro-choice protesters and volunteer clinic escorts often arrive early, around 6:45am on Saturdays, to station themselves on the street and direct drivers to the actual clinic. 

The physical obstacles seem to be lined up in every direction ― in addition to North Carolina’s already restrictive abortion laws.

Women must receive discouraging abortion counseling and wait 72 hours after their initial consultation before they can have the procedure. If a patient is under the age of 18, a parent must consent to the abortion ― plus, there is only public funding in the case of rape or incest, and all women must have a sonogram whether they want one or not. 

Despite the thousands of people ― church members and nonprofits ― working against it, APWHC Charlotte has managed to maintain its quality services, with the help of members of the Charlotte community volunteering their time to support the clinic. On Saturday afternoon, there were two dozen pro-choice protesters on site, up from the usual three or four. There were also a significant number of new clinic escorts. Shelley, one of the clinic escort leaders, said that close to 20 volunteers signed up specifically to serve on Saturday.  

“With these large-scale events,” Hales said, “you really feel like you’re under siege. I can’t tell you the last time I actually felt safe.”

Hales also acknowledged the added hostility from the anti-abortion rhetoric of the presidential election and impending Trump/Pence Administration. She told HuffPost that the clinic has seen a higher volume of protesters over the last year, and that their behavior and rhetoric has become more hostile.

“I’ve even seen a man pace the sidewalk with rope while screaming about sinners hanging like strange fruit,’” she said. “A friend compared it once to constantly feeling like you’re under siege ― I’m finding that comparison to be scarily accurate.”

But ultimately, pro-choice staff and volunteers held their own against the protesters.

When one anti-abortion protester called clinic escorts “bullies,” they began offering hugs and showering each other with affection. When one anti-abortion man took the microphone to call members of the pro-choice movement “swine,” a chorus of car alarms went off to muffle the sound of his voice. All of the volunteers who’d parked outside the clinic had turned on their car alarms simultaneously, winking at one another. There were cupcakes and kazoos, witty posters and McMuffins, hugs and high-fives. 

After all, this is a fight that women are used to fighting.

One protester with Pro-Choice Charlotte said that she’d been protesting since before the 1973 ruling of Roe v. Wade.

“I’m 54 years old,” said another. “I’m sick of this shit.”

And yet there she stood.

5 Things That Will Make You Much Happier

There’s enough advice on happiness floating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make another miserable.

In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.


“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.

Korb’s research demonstrated that your thoughts–and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts–have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain.

Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brain’s reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.

1. Gratitude creates happiness. I’m not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine–the brain’s happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things aren’t going well for you. That’s because you don’t actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain; you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appreciate. This train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.

2. Labeling negative feelings dilutes their power. There is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brain’s prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesn’t just work with your own emotions; labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.

3. Making decisions feels good. Similar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a “good enough” decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. We’ve always known that, but now there’s scientific research that explains why. Making a “good enough” decision activates the dorsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity–which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process.

4. It helps you to lend a hand.Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

5. Our brains are wired for touch. Humans are social animals, to the point that our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brain’s response to pain. You might think that’s bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.

Bringing It All Together

Kolb’s research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, “Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely you’ll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.”

How To Break A Bad Habit — For Good

Have you ever tried to break a bad habit, only to give up in frustration? The problem isn’t that you’re weak or that the bad habit is too ingrained; in all likelihood, you just gave up too soon.

Researchers at University College, London, found that it takes 66 days for a new habit to form. Likewise, as long as there is no physical addiction involved, it takes 66 days for you to shake a bad habit. But before you can develop the motivation to stick it out for that long, you need to understand how bad habits form in the first place.

Bad habits are formed and reinforced via the habit loop. First, something triggers you to initiate an undesired behavior. Maybe you’re feeling stressed, so you decide to numb out on Facebook for an hour or eat a whole bag of Flamin’ Cheetos. The trigger event is whatever puts this idea in your head. The second step is the behavior itself. Your brain says, “Sure, you deserve some Flamin’ Cheetos,” so you dig in.

The third step — and this part is crucial — is the reward. The behavior has to reward you in some way. That doesn’t mean it’s good for you or that it’s smart, just that it does something that your brain likes. Numbing out on Facebook might help you forget your problems for a while or to put off something that you don’t want to do, and we all know, all too well, the reward that comes from eating a bag of junk food. For better or worse, these rewards increase the likelihood that you’ll repeat the behavior.

Once you repeat a behavior enough times, the habit loop becomes so automated that you don’t even think about it anymore. Instead of making a conscious decision to procrastinate, you just automatically pull up Facebook as soon as you sit down at your desk or you’re digging into the Cheetos before you even realize that you’re feeling stressed.

Once a habit becomes automatic, it’s a lot harder to break–and that’s why you’re probably failing if you’re not giving yourself 66 days to wean yourself off it.

Sixty-six days might seem like a long time, but there are specific stages you have to go through that will make the process feel much shorter. Let’s take a look at these.

Days 1-10: Look Inward

It’s usually pretty obvious which bad habits are causing the most problems in your life–the ones that keep coming up in performance appraisals or sparking arguments with your spouse. Once you’ve identified a habit to change, the real challenge lies in understanding your triggers, and that can be harder than it sounds, especially if the habit has become so ingrained that you do it subconsciously. If you give it enough thought, you’ll get to the bottom of it. Maybe you keep getting tickets for speeding, and you realize that you drive too fast when you leave work in a bad mood, or maybe you snack when you’re stressed. Looking inward to explore the source of the habit you’re trying to break makes breaking that habit possible. The first 10 days of trying to break the habit will provide substantial insight into the source of the habit, should you choose to look. Building self-awareness is critical to emotional intelligence, and your act of introspection will serve you in many ways beyond breaking your bad habit.

Days 11-40: Spread the Word

Accountability is crucial in breaking bad habits. In this stage, you create a very vocal accountability network by telling everybody you can about the habit you’re trying to break, and the more vocal you are about it, the more likely people are to call you out when you slip up. Let them know that you really want them to say something. Just remember that you might have to keep reminding them–it’s just as easy for them to forget and backslide as it is for you to do so.

Days 41-66: Mind Your Relapse Triggers

As you head for the home stretch, be ready to make some mistakes — it happens to everybody. Just be on the lookout for common threads running through those mistakes. If you tend to relapse in a certain situation, you’d be smart to avoid that trigger completely until you feel that your bad habit is really extinguished. Keeping your triggers from surprising you when it feels like you’ve kicked the habit is typically the difference between success and failure this late in the process.

Day 67: Reward Yourself

Sure, you could say that breaking the habit is its own reward, but why pass up an opportunity to celebrate? Just don’t celebrate by indulging in the habit you worked so hard to break! You should also use this opportunity to reflect and select the next habit you’re going to break.

Bringing It All Together

You’re not weak, stupid, or lazy if you have a hard time breaking bad habits. There are psychological factors that make this process challenging for everyone, but the very science behind what makes habits hard to break also provides a research-supported method for doing it. Focus on one habit at a time and follow these steps and the timetable that goes with them, and your chances of success will go through the roof.

Donald Trump’s Education Secretary Pick Wants To Make Christianity A Bigger Part Of Schooling

Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, spoke at a 2001 conference with her husband, Dick, about using educational philanthropy to promote their conservative Christian worldview to children.

The conference was hosted by The Gathering, a group of elite Christian philanthropists. Researcher Bruce Wilson, co-founder of the website Talk To Action, unearthed the audio after going through archives on The Gathering’s website. The recordings have since become unavailable, but a cached version of the website lists the DeVoses as “general session speakers” at the conference, which carried a $ 1,200 per person registration fee, Politico reported on Friday.

The Huffington Post had earlier contacted spokespeople for DeVos, the Trump transition team and The Gathering to confirm that it was the president-elect’s education secretary pick speaking on the audio. No one responded. However, a summer 2001 newsletter that The Gathering published, and which Wilson obtained, also confirms that they were set to speak at the group’s upcoming conference.

During the question-and-answer portion of the recording, Dick DeVos can be heard lamenting that the “church, which ought to be, in our view, far more central to the life of the community, has been displaced by the public school as the center for activity.”

He goes on to say that he hopes churches get more involved in education, whether through school voucher programs or other mechanisms. Churches, schools and families should become more tightly built around a “consistent worldview,” he adds. 

During the panel, Betsy DeVos insists she and Dick aren’t enemies of traditional public schools, but are rather “for good education and for every child having an opportunity for a good education.” Yet the comments she and her husband appear to have made at the event suggest this could come at the price of blurring the separation of church and state.

While public schools are allowed to teach about religion, Heather Weaver, senior staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, says they are not allowed to “proselytize, promote or disparage religion. They cannot teach it as truth.”

“Schools cannot impose a religion or religious beliefs on students in any way,” Weaver explained. “Certainly, school officials and others might be motivated by their religious values and beliefs to teach, but when they cross the line from using those as a source of their purpose to actually imposing faith on students, that becomes a huge problem.”

Like other Trump Cabinet nominees, Betsy DeVos is incredibly wealthy, as is her husband. Dick is heir to the marketing company Amway, and Betsy’s brother, Erik Prince, founded the private security company Blackwater. The couple have long been major players in the Christian philanthropy world.

At one point in the 2001 recording, Betsy remarks: “Having grown up in families that are in the business world, we both believe that competition and choices make everyone better. Ultimately, if the system that prevailed in the United States today had more competition, if there were other choices for people to make freely, all of the schools would become better as a result.”

Dick DeVos also once served on the Michigan state board of education, and he and Betsy are deeply involved in education giving and advocacy, working for decades to promote school voucher programs and expanded school choice options. School voucher programs use taxpayer money to send kids to private schools, which are often religious. 

During the 2001 panel, Dick explained why he and his wife chose education as one of their major causes, even though it is a controversial, high-visibility issue ― something he learned during his unsuccessful run for governor of Michigan in 2006, when he came under fire after saying schools should have the option of teaching intelligent design.

“The Lord did lead us there, quietly by the heart,” he said, adding that he and Betsy hope “someday, for all parents to be able to educate their children in a school that reflects their worldview and not each day sending their child to a school that may be reflecting a worldview quite antithetical ― which, unfortunately, is the case in some places ― to the worldview that they hold in their family.” 

Voucher programs have come under fire from groups like the ACLU, which says they infringe on religious freedom by using public money for private, religious schools

However, advocates for school choice programs like the DeVoses say they provide low-income families with the better options that more affluent families can typically afford.

In 2000, the couple helped put an initiative on the Michigan ballot to push school vouchers in the state, but the effort failed. While speaking to members of The Gathering, Betsy DeVos said that their goal is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to attend the school that meets their individual and unique needs, no matter their socioeconomic background. 

In 2014, Mother Jones called the DeVos clan the “new Kochs” because of their massive donations to conservative causes.

Asked at the 2001 panel why they didn’t use their money to build Christian schools directly, Betsy described their recent trip to Israel, where they learned about how the ancient Israelites shared their culture with other groups. Through doing that, the Israelites had a larger impact on the area than they would have otherwise, she said.  

The couple has decided “to impact our culture in ways that are not the traditional funding-the-Christian-organization route, but that really may have greater Kingdom gain in the long run by changing the way we approach things, in this case the system of education in the country.”

The Power of Eloquence

Beautiful Words Have Power

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol,” St. Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians two thousand years ago. “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that I can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Paul bequeathed us faith, hope and love -these three — “but the greatest of these,” he said, “is love.”
Paul passed away, as we all must in our time, but he continues to enrich the human experience with his beautiful words that are timeless. It should be noted that when Paul spoke of love, he was not talking about romance between a man and a woman, but rather love for our fellow human beings. Interestingly, the scholars working for King James translated that key phrase as “faith, hope and charity” which I believe came closer to Paul’s meaning.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence two centuries ago, “that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Jefferson and his editors among the Founding Fathers toyed with that last one. Some wanted to say “life, liberty and property.” But they hesitated to assert that everyone was entitled by God to property. I am glad they chose “pursuit of happiness” instead of “pursuit of property,” for the words are beautiful in their vague simplicity. Like the words of St. Paul, they have stood the test of time and still inspire people.
Some are troubled by Jefferson’s eloquence about liberty because of his hypocrisy as a slave owner, and he was certainly aware of that even within the context of his own time. Jefferson knew slavery was evil and acknowledged as much, saying it alarmed him “like a fire bell in the night” as if he had foreseen the consequences that would ensue for that failure to deal with the worst blot on our nation’s history. That was left for another great wordsmith to deal with.
“Fourscore and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” opined Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863. “We are now engaged in a great Civil War testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” He concluded his short address with the hope that “government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
St. Paul, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln shared a gift for beautiful words – constructing sentences that soar beyond mere communication to touch the heart and inspire humanity to rise above its mean estate. It is difficult to imagine President-elect Trump joining this company – tweets do not often sustain eloquence – but you never know. If he can summon President Reagan’s speechwriter Peggy Noonan back to Washington, anything is possible.

We’ll Remember Cuba’s Ebola Compassion Long After Castro’s Death

While the Cuban government’s accomplishments and failures are still being tallied in the days following Fidel Castro’s death on Nov. 25, the island nation’s health care system is one achievement expected to stand the test of history. 

One striking example of the country’s unique health footprint: For a nation with only 11 million people, Cuba sent an unparalleled number of medical personnel to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2014.

When Ebola spread through West Africa in 2014, Cuba announced that it would send more than 460 doctors and nurses to West Africa. The epidemic ultimately killed 11,310 people, more than any previous outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Ultimately Cuba deployed approximately 265 medical personnel to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, according to the World Health Organization.

For comparison’s sake, in November 2014, President Obama promised just 65 health professionals, supported by 4,000 U.S. troops. (WHO said it’s difficult to track actual personnel deployed from the U.S. because they weren’t a unified group like the Cubans were. Americans may have volunteered with nongovernmental organizations, for example.)

“[Cuba] has become something like the world’s first responder to international crises in recent years,” Jon Lee Anderson wrote in The New Yorker in 2014. Indeed, Cuba’s 50,000 roving medical professionals stationed in more than 60 countries are often the first foreign health workers at catastrophes around the world. Cuban doctors, for example cared for almost 40 percent of victims during Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake, according to The Guardian. The deployments are the result of a longtime Cuban program to send health care workers abroad as a way to boost its image and to trade services for goods for the embargoed island.

The Cuban medical response is built on a larger culture of population health. Cuban doctors practice prevention-oriented primary care and are responsible for improving the overall health of their patient populations. Cuba also has one of the best doctor-to-population ratios in the world, meaning the country spends far less money per person on health care costs than does the United States, but it boasts a better child mortality rate and similar life expectancy

According to the World Bank, in 2010 Cuba had 6.7 doctors per 1,000 people, compared with the United States’ 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people.

“Unlike students trained in the U.S. or Western Europe, Cuban students are trained to improve population health status,” Dr. C. William Keck, professor emeritus at Northeast Ohio Medical University, previously told The Huffington Post. 

“We certainly aren’t here. When I went to medical school, I was taught to do battle with disease one patient at a time. You dealt with what came in the door. You didn’t focus much on the community. It’s a much different approach,” said Keck, who is a member of the Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba, a nonprofit that promotes U.S.-Cuba health collaborations.

That dedication to community health extends beyond Cuba’s borders. 

“We know what can happen. We know we’re going to a hostile environment,” Cuban doctor Leonardo Fernandez told Reuters before he left to fight Ebola in West Africa in 2014.

“But it is our duty. That’s how we’ve been educated. This little bit that we have, when people need it, we are capable of sharing. It’s a basic concept.”

Carrier’s Workers Union Was Shut Out Of Negotiations Between Company And Donald Trump

President-elect Donald Trump tweeted on Thanksgiving Day that he was working to fulfill a campaign promise to save 1,400 jobs set to be eliminated from the Carrier Corporation’s factory in Indiana. 

On Tuesday night, Carrier tweeted that it had reached a deal with the Trump transition team to save “close to 1,000 jobs” at Carrier’s Indianapolis plant, which makes gas furnaces for heating buildings. 

Chuck Jones, president of the local chapter of the United Steelworkers union that represents workers at Carrier’s Indianapolis plant, had to go by the tweets. He was not a party to the deal. Jones told The Huffington Post that he first got the details from the company itself on Thursday shortly before Trump took a victory lap at the plant

“We met with the company at noon,” Jones said, “and then we found out what the numbers actually reflected was, they weren’t keeping our 1,283 bargaining unit members, they were going to keep 730.”  

“Well, that was somewhat of a setback because Trump was saying they were keeping 1,000 jobs,” Jones said. He added that the company said another 70 non-union positions would also stay. (Trump and the company have touted the preservation of an additional 300 research and development jobs, but Carrier had never announced plans to eliminate them.)

The remaining 553 bargaining unit members will still be laid off over the next three years, as will an additional 700 workers at another Indiana-based subsidiary of Carrier’s parent company, United Technologies. 

The union’s exclusion from the process is significant, since the whole problem the company had was that it thought its labor costs were too high ― and a core function of unions is to negotiate labor costs with companies. Instead of seeking concessions from the union as part of the deal, the negotiators decided to fire fewer of its members in return for $ 7 million worth of tax breaks from the state of Indiana.

Something the union could have brought to Trump’s attention is that Carrier’s plant isn’t the only one where the union represents workers whose jobs are about to be shipped to Mexico. About a mile from the Carrier plant, a ball bearings manufacturer called Rexnord is planning to shut down a factory that employs nearly 300 United Steelworkers members. 

Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) sent a letter to Trump this week praising the Carrier deal and trying to bring his attention to Rexnord and yet another closing plant owned by CTS Corporation. 

“There are more than 500 jobs at risk between those two companies,” Donnelly wrote. 

Trump bashed Carrier’s offshoring plans for much of the campaign, holding the company up as symbol of how bad trade deals let big companies betray American workers. It’s not clear if he’s ever mentioned Rexnord. 

Jones had hoped to bring up the Rexnord situation with Trump when he visited the Carrier factory on Thursday, but between Trump’s speech and hand-shaking, Jones said, he couldn’t find a moment. He hadn’t been promised a meeting. 

“He arrived late and when he got there he was shaking hands,” Jones said. “I was in the third row and I’d been sitting there about three hours and I got up and left.”

Still, several Rexnord workers have told HuffPost they are thrilled that Trump has focused on saving manufacturing jobs, even if he doesn’t save theirs. 

“All throughout the plant yesterday everybody was elated that a thousand jobs were saved, and it does give people a lot of hope,” John Feltner, a machinist at Rexnord and a member of the bargaining team, said in an interview. 

Despite the glimmer of hope, Feltner’s not incredibly optimistic. “This company is set on moving to Mexico,” he said. 

Rexnord has not responded to requests for comment. 

Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, an advocacy group funded both by manufacturers and the steelworkers union, said Trump’s strategy of publicly berating a company probably won’t be enough by itself to stop companies from shifting production to countries with lower labor costs. 

“There are plant closings like this that occur on a weekly basis, so unless he’s going to set aside a couple hours per week to focus on this it’s obviously not a sustainable strategy,” Paul said. 

Still, he called the deal an important symbolic victory for manufacturing workers, who have seen their ranks dwindle by 5.5 million since 2000. 

“It shows that that economic pain that was felt in the heartland ― that caught a lot of political analysts by surprise ― does have a voice,” Paul said. “And at least there are some initial steps toward addressing some of the causes.”

WATCH: Embracing the Mystery (Not Having All the Answers)

It can be very frustrating when we don’t know what to do… how to handle certain situations… what the future might bring. But, that’s how life is sometimes – we’re never going to know everything (unless you are Dr. Bernofsky…). So, we can let that be a source of energy-draining upset, or we can accept it. Maybe even embrace it. I hope this will help you do so.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) This Mom Won’t Stop Until She Finds Help For Son Whose Body Rejects Food

During snack time, 16-month-old Elliot Carter eats ice chips. His body rejects any other food.

Elliot’s mom Leah is on a mission to find help for her son who has a condition called food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), a rare food allergy commonly triggered by dairy or soy products.

Doctors first noticed Elliot’s condition when he was admitted to the hospital when he was 3 months old. He was there for a surgical correction of layrngomalacia, or floppy tissue that partially blocked his airway. During that hospital visit, doctors realized Elliot had a significant decrease in his growth, dropping from the 75th percentile to the third. 

“It was then he was formally diagnosed ‘failure to thrive,’” Carter told The Huffington Post. “A title that we can’t quite seem to shake.”

Elliot was officially diagnosed with FPIES when he was 5 months old. At 9 months, he was diagnosed with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). The conditions mean that food causes a reaction in Elliot’s body, causing him to vomit. The only things he can enjoy are ice chips and breast milk.

“Most kids with FPIES only have one or two trigger foods, but Elliot is quite literally allergic to everything right now,” Carter said. 

Carter, who lives in Michigan, told HuffPost her son is now on nutritional life support, a decision her family made after exhausting all other options including prescription hypoallergenic formulas. It is administered through a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line placed in his arm this past Monday at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. 

While doctors continue to try and help Elliott, Carter, who left her career as a pediatric nurse to take care of her son, is determined to find someone who has an answer. “I knew I needed to grab everyone’s attention and make lots and lots of noise to get my child the help he needs,” she said. “After all, we all know the squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

Carter told HuffPost she has received messages from around the world from people who are part of what she calls #ElliotsArmy. The little fighter has touched hearts in Australia, Denmark, Mexico, Italy, China and Sweden. Carter said she has been “blown away” by all of the support, and that she will continue spreading Elliot’s story as far as she can.

“Someone, somewhere will know how to help Elliot,” she said. “And I won’t stop sharing our story until I find that person.”

Elizabeth Warren Endorses Her Former Opponent Scott Brown For VA Secretary

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Thursday praised her onetime opponent Scott Brown, who President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating to be secretary of veteran affairs.

In an interview with Boston’s WGBH, Warren offered enthusiastic support for Brown, whom she unseated in the often-contentious 2012 Massachusetts Senate race. 

“If Scott Brown is the nominee for Veterans Affairs, I have no doubt that he would put his heart and soul into trying to help veterans,” she said. “And I would put my heart and soul into trying to help him do that. You bet I’d support that.”

Warren has a personal stake in the Department of Veteran Affairs ― all three of her brothers served in the military.

Brown has met with Trump to discuss the potential appointment.

“We obviously spoke about my passion and his passion, which is veterans and veterans issues,” Brown said last month. “And obviously I think the toughest job in the Cabinet is leading the VA, because while it has so many great angels working there, it has great problems as well.” 

Trump is reportedly also considering 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for the role. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) has been floated for the post as well. 

Warren’s praise may be more curse than blessing for Brown. The Democrat is fiercely critical of Trump and his nascent administration. In turn, Trump has frequently berated Warren, mockingly calling her “Pocahontas” in reference to a 2012 controversy over her claims of Cherokee heritage. 

Warren also discussed the potential nomination of 2012 GOP presidential nominee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as secretary of state, but stopped short of endorsing him. 

“I’d like to hear more,” she said. “But I think Mitt Romney is a smart man, and I think he’s got a pretty level headed view of the world.”

In high school I used to look at my four years like a runway. After senior year I’d leave my hometown and never look back–not even once. I thought of my friendships with those around me as ones that would end, since I would be leaving to see the world.

Clearly there would be some sort of giant going away party complete with cakes and a huge arch over my driveway saying “GOOD LUCK TOM WE’LL MISS YOU” plastered all over it.

My old life was ending–my new life just beginning.

I hurried off to college like the big idiot that I was. I packed all my stuff in a couple suitcases and practically ran onto the plane. I basically left my Mom in a dust storm–kind of like the ones you see in cartoons when characters run away really quickly.

I’ll never forget when I said goodbye to her.

It was just a very sudden moment. As she walked away I realized I actually had a lot of things to say to her, but she was already down the hallway and in the elevator.

What was I doing?

It was then I realized I was alone, and that time was rushing by me incredibly fast.

But what gets me is that I never thought I’d get old, in a way. I must’ve thought time would stop after graduation or something. There’s no way I could ever get old.

But here I am coaching a team I used to wrestle for, and opening the back doors of my high school once again, with memories I didn’t know I had flooding back to me.

It’s like starting a trail through the mountains and looking back at how far you’ve come. You’re different than you were before.

The past likes to echo in your present. Not everything’s the same, but there’s just enough..
Your former coaches have a few extra wrinkles, and your school has a few more scuffs, and your gym has a few more banners in it.

Oddly enough I’m here in my hometown, chasing what I ran away from so quickly.

Time hurts. It sets crazy things in motion that don’t make any sense when they’re happening but make all kinds of sense when they’re finished.

And you know what means the most to me now? Simple conversations I have with my friends–especially old ones. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of who I used to be and I get my old self back for a few moments. But there’s something more.

I was certain of so many things before that ended up falling apart by the end. But then years later I’d get to revisit these relationships because time does heal a lot of things.

It makes me hopeful for the ones that are falling apart right now.

One day you will get to sit down with someone you never thought you’d talk to again and it’ll be like nothing ever happened and you’ll be young again for a few hours. To me the sweetest gift you could ever receive is to experience something you never thought you would experience again.

Losing all faith in something sucks. I don’t think anything hurts more. But it feels just as extreme in the other direction when an old friendship gets resurrected and everything is forgiven.

I’ve realized that most times people will forgive you. You just have to give time a little space. I was just too young to realize time was all I needed to wish for (again) what I was running away from after graduation.

People always ask me why I live in the past so much, and that’s because there’s a lot of joy and regret back there. People tell me to live in the present more–and they might be right.

Time. What a crazy thing it is. We battle with it every single day, dipping into memories and the future and right now all at the same time. But, to me, we need to give more credit to the past. Many of my current decisions rest on what happened in my past. We can’t escape who we used to be, or the hometown we grew up in. They aren’t going to take any banners down with your name on it. You can’t look at someone you used to love and not feel a thing.

There’s some things we aren’t in control of. We need to embrace who we used to be just as much as who we are right now and who we’re going to be in the future.

I tried to run away from my hometown, but there is no running away from it. And, in time, it ends up being where we want to return to the most.

Progressives Blast Donald Trump’s Treasury Pick

Progressive lawmakers and groups eager to expose President-elect Donald Trump as a populist in name only have found fertile ground in Steve Mnuchin, Trump’s choice for Treasury secretary.

Thanks to his professional record, Mnuchin, a former second-generation partner at Goldman Sachs and hedge fund founder, would likely draw liberal criticism regardless of the president who appointed him.

Mnuchin and his partners took over troubled bank IndyMac in 2008, renaming it One West and ramping up home foreclosures with a disproportionate focus on the reverse mortgages typically held by elderly Americans. Civil rights groups have accused the bank of racially discriminatory lending and business practices.

If confirmed, which is all but assured, Mnuchin stands to oversee the very financial sector from which he profited handsomely. Perhaps it is no surprise then that Mnuchin has promised to roll back portions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law. 

 

Mnuchin’s history and positions would rankle Democrats in any year. But Mnuchin is not just any nominee: he is Trump’s. The president-elect ran as a champion of working Americans and slammed opponent Hillary Clinton for her paid speeches to Goldman Sachs, the very firm that employed Mnuchin.

“President-elect Trump campaigned against big money’s power in Washington and accused Wall Street and hedge funds of ‘getting away with murder,’” Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee said in a statement. “But now he has picked a hedge-fund manager whose Wall Street ties couldn’t run deeper to lead the Treasury Department, which is exactly what this election showed the American people don’t want.  This isn’t draining the swamp ― it’s stocking it with alligators.”

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), another member of the Banking Committee, also emphasized the apparent inconsistency of the selection.

“If you want somebody to dismantle the protections for consumers he’s just the guy to do it. But that is in fact the opposite of what Trump campaigned on,” Merkley said on CNBC on Wednesday. 

“This is another broken promise from Donald Trump to ‘drain the swamp’ in Washington and not the change hardworking people in Wisconsin voted for,” Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) said in a statement.

The Progressive Campaign Change Committee, a liberal advocacy group, sounded a similar note in a statement condemning Mnuchin as “yet another out-of-touch billionaire who is more concerned with self-dealing for Wall Street than protecting Americans from the too big to fail banks.”

“Trump’s supporters did not vote for him to put a second-generation Goldman Sachs banker who made a fortune foreclosing on working families’ homes in charge of the economy,” the organization said.

National Consumer Law Center attorney Alys Cohen focused her statement on Mnuchin’s record of “profiting by foreclosing on older homeowners and homeowners in communities of color.”

“We call on Mr. Mnuchin, if confirmed, to use his leadership to help Main Street recover from the economic crisis caused by Wall Street, not to benefit the 1%,” Cohen said.

Mnuchin’s confirmation is virtually a foregone conclusion since he has aroused no public opposition from the Republican senators whose lack of support would jeopardize his nomination.

But seeing a fight over Mnuchin as a long-term organizing tool, at least one liberal group, Demand Progress, is admonishing Democratic lawmakers to vote him down.

“As Democrats work to re-establish their party’s credibility as a voice for working people, not one Senate Democrat should vote to confirm Wall Street billionaire Steven Mnuchin for Treasury Secretary,” Demand Progress’ Kurt Walters said in a statement.

It’s in that precious moment that we actually have a clear understanding. Our uniqueness of being is where we truly exist. People naturally gravitate to those who believe in themselves, à la Oprah, Beyoncé, Steve Jobs.

It starts with you liking one thing about yourself. Be it singing, dancing, styling, skill with numbers, reliability – trust this as your core.

We all come in with an authentic gift. We often dismiss opportunities to grow and welcome development. And when all is said and done, if we don’t get what we want, we feel short changed.

When we are confused, we seek advice. Somebody we know tells us how they think we should what we want. Ironically, it’s usually their way. We follow suit, all the while we are aware that something’s off. Listen to your gut, trust your intuition. Something’s off because you are doing it the way somebody else is doing it, not your way. It can’t work if you are not being your authentic you.

There is no greater time than right now to seek that passion, or be open to new discoveries. Follow your gut. Don’t give up on your dream; simplify and keep modifying. Keep your day job and learn to invest both your dream and your day-to-day life.

The minute anybody else attempts to undermine you, don’t doubt your core for a moment. Take that as your valuable warning. If we don’t contribute one authentic thing about ourselves, then others won’t provide anything either. In other words, don’t be clueless, be smart!

I’m a great believer of jumping in, but make sure to find the right expert. Treat your dream like you are already paid for the job. Do your homework. Email, contact, communicate – research before you dive head over feet. Be clear what makes you happy, more authentic. Focus on that one attribute that is yours. No one can take it from you.

Even the most ardent new age seekers among us feel that we’ve been sold a lot of airy-fairy nonsense, when what we’re all looking for is something reliable and actual: a higher goal that comes to life in this world, not the next.

Most of us cry out to a benevolent force sooner or later. Why am I here? And when we hear silence, we panic. We grab the first thought and wing it, and hope it goes viral.

Pinning our hopes with a fixed dream is disastrous. Be open to modification. Because the dream has to start from somewhere, it never comes in whole. It might not look exactly like you thought it would. Go with the flow.

A way to stimulate your transformation is by making a commitment: Try investing four hours a month to your quest.

One thing you can you do daily is to check in. Take a private moment and visualize yourself in action, doing the thing you love. Make it as real as possible. See yourself with the thing you most want, and know that you can have it. Every time we internally see our exalted selves in motion, it projects out to everyone we meet and attracts to us a world of opportunity.

As Oprah so eloquently expressed, “Change your thoughts and change your world.”

29 Joy-Filled Photos Of Kids Adopted From Foster Care

There are over 100,000 kids in the U.S. foster care system awaiting adoption. That’s why organizations like Together We Rise work to promote foster care adoption and support families in the midst of the process.

“Raising awareness about adoption from foster care is so important because of the many myths the majority of people believe to be true,” Together We Rise executive director, Gianna Dahlia, told The Huffington Post.

“People believe that these may be ‘bad’ kids with many problems or that they can’t afford it,” she added. “The truth is adoption from foster care costs close to nothing, but more importantly, these children are just children who want and deserve loving homes.”

For the past three years, Together We Rise has been celebrating adoption by sharing joyful photos of foster kids on the day they officially became part of their “forever families.” The adoption day photos are some of their most popular Instagram posts.

Dahlia said she believes people love the photos so much because they offer a feeling of hope and accomplishment. 

“The road to adoption can be hard, but these families prove that in the end, when a child gets to be a part of a forever family, how special that moment is,” Dahlia said. “Seeing the joy on a child’s face that they get to be loved and supported for the rest of their life is priceless. We can’t really think of a better feeling than knowing you belong and are loved.”

Sharing adoption day photos is just one of many uplifting initiatives for Together We Rise, which aims to improve the lives of foster kids by offering resources like school supplies, bicycles, educational programs and even college scholarships. The nonprofit also educates volunteers about the issues surrounding the foster care system and provides information to foster parents about the adoption process.

“It is important not only to raise awareness for adoption from foster care but that we celebrate the families who are working hard every day to complete their forever families,” said Dahlia, adding that National Adoption Month in November is a great opportunity to do so. 

“We need to show these families that their community supports them and that the journey is worth it,” she added. “National Adoption Month is about tackling negative stereotypes and empowering more families in hopes for a better future for children still waiting for their forever family. “

Dear President-Elect Trump: Three Steps To Address The Opioid Epidemic

After an election marked by bitter division and conflict, all citizens of good will are likely anxious for the next administration to turn to the real issues affecting our country and its communities. Realistic citizens know President-elect Trump can’t fix every problem quickly. But when it comes to taking action on the opioid crisis, which kills an astonishing 78 Americans every day, there are concrete steps with bipartisan support that the president can and should take from his first day in office.

The grim news of the opioid epidemic accelerates, thanks to the astonishing ease of purchase and delivery from overseas. In September, two 13-year-old boys in the same resort town in Utah died from overdoses of “pink,” a synthetic drug eight times more powerful than heroin. Formally known as U-47700, the drug can be legally ordered online in 46 of 50 states and delivered from China, via the U.S. Postal Service right to your mailbox (I just did a Google search and up popped Ching Labs, happy to send me 2 grams for $ 70). Last month, a Michigan teenager overdosed and died of “pink” delivered by mail from China.

It almost seems like a race is on to see which overseas labs can produce the most potent – and deadly – opioids. In recent weeks we’ve learned that carfentanil, used to sedate elephants, is entering the U.S. from China and contributing to a rising number of fatal overdoses. According to an article in Scientific American, carfentanil is 10,000 times more powerful than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl, the drug that musician Prince overdosed on this spring. Carfentanil is so powerful that it is considered a chemical weapon, banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the U.S. State Department has raised the issue with its Chinese counterparts. And yet there are still easily accessible ways to send the drug to families and communities across the country. The Associated Press recently found that to improve transport reliability, Chinese suppliers were using EMS, their state-owned express and logistics company, to send the drugs; a representative of Yuntu Chemical Co. in China wrote in an email that EMS was a bit slower than FedEx or DHL, but had a “99% pass rate.”

So it’s time, past time, for action. As soon as Mr. Trump is sworn in on January 20, he should take three steps. First, he must close the loophole that allows foreign postal services, such as those from China, to deliver packages without the advance electronic security data that other shippers, like FedEx and UPS, must provide. Law enforcement – including Customs and Border Protection – needs this data to know when, where and how deadly synthetic drugs are entering the country. This loophole therefore creates an easy superhighway for overseas opioids to enter the United States – along with other dangerous items, including weapons and explosives that could be used by terrorists. The president can and should close this loophole by executive action – no need to wait for Congress. President-elect Trump has already demonstrated that he recognizes this loophole’s significance and tragic impact by speaking of it on the campaign trail, and his released plan of action on the opiate crisis listed closing the loophole as one of its four main actions.

Second, Mr. Trump should begin to deliver on his campaign promises about providing much needed help for those struggling with addiction. He has, for example, spoken clearly about the need to provide first responders with access to naloxone, the drug that is able to reverse opiate overdoses and is responsible for almost-daily headlines on lifesaving rescues. And he has promised to expand access to addiction treatment, which would shift the focus on this deadly disease away from shame and punishment and towards hope for recovery.

Third, the new President should meet with Congressional leaders and urge passage of the bill sponsored by Senator Rob Portman (S. 524, with a bipartisan companion bill in the House), that would, among other measures, close the USPS loophole described above. This would be a “belt and suspenders” approach, with action from the executive and the legislative branches. In this case, with so many lives at risk, and when a truly bipartisan solution exists, being redundant is a good thing. Without cutting off the source of deadly drugs, other efforts to stem the crisis, no matter how well-intentioned, cannot be successful.

What We Misunderstand About What Motivates Us

As people, we misunderstand a lot about what motivates us.

One of the main things that people don’t understand about motivation is the pleasure principle. People think that pursuing pleasure is what motivation is all about, but the reality is that motivation is often counter to pursuing pleasure. Pleasure is about sitting on the beach and drinking a mojito, pleasure is about watching a sitcom but in fact most of the things that give us deep motivation are things that are difficult and complex and sometimes even painful.

Think about things like writing a book or starting a company, having kids or running a marathon. If you take running marathons for example and you look at the people who are running marathons they don’t look happy at all, it looks like there is zero amount of pleasure in what they are doing. If you came from outer space and were wondering about this phenomenon of running a marathon you would probably conclude that these people have been punished and this is the way they are paying their debts to society.

Marathons, writing books, starting business are things that give us deep pleasure but this pleasure is not measured in the momentary pleasure like having a drink or watching a sitcom. It’s a very different pleasure.

The first point is when we think about motivation we think about short term pleasure but motivation is actually about long term meaning and the pleasure we get from long term meaning is a very different kind of pleasure.

The second main thing that we don’t understand about motivation is that motivation is not just about money. When people think about motivation they have an equation that says motivation = pay, but the reality is that motivation has lots of different elements. We care about meaning, competition, a sense of achievement, progress, the welfare of others and all of these other elements in the motivation equation is not what comes to mind most easily.

For example, consider this experiment. In this experiment we asked people to build Lego Bionicles and we paid people to do so. We paid people a diminishing wage, more for the first, less for the second, etc. etc. until some point they stopped building. In one condition we asked them if they would like to build one and they said yes and when they finished we asked if they would like to build another for less if they said yes, they built and so and so forth until they stopped. This was the Meaningful condition. In another version which we called the Sisyphus we did the same thing but when people agreed they wanted to build a second Bionicle as they started we took the first Bionicle apart and put the pieces back in the box. When they finished the second one and we asked if they wanted to build a third one we gave them the one that they had built and we disassembled to reassemble and so on and so forth. In this condition, people build and rebuild the same two bionicles over and over. So what happened? In both conditions people built Bionicles but in the Meaningful condition people built much longer and more Bionicles and they were willing to work for less money. In the Sisyphus condition their motivation was incredibly cut. The amount of money they were making was the same but they were seeing their work destroyed in front of their eyes which destroyed their motivation.

PSA: Pregnant Women Should Still Get Flu Shots

During follow-up periods ranging from two to 15 years, 1.6 percent of the children were diagnosed with ASD. Among the mothers of that 1.6 percent, fewer than 1 percent had the flu while pregnant, and about 23 percent had gotten a flu vaccine.

Neither influenza infection nor vaccination during pregnancy were tied to children being diagnosed with ASD, the research team reports in JAMA Pediatrics.

“Our data showed pretty convincingly that there was no association with influenza at any time during pregnancy and autism in the child,” said senior author Lisa Croen, of Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland.

“We’re not recommending that any changes be made to the vaccination policy,” Croen told Reuters Health. “We are encouraging women to get vaccinated while pregnant.”

Previous studies looking at possible links between influenza during pregnancy and ASD had produced mixed results, Croen and her colleagues note in JAMA Pediatrics. And until now, they add, no studies had looked for links between ASD and flu vaccines, which are recommended for pregnant women.

People with ASD may have social, communication and behavioral challenges that may cause them to interact, learn and behave in ways different from most people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A second study published in the same journal also found no link between vaccines against influenza A (H1N1) – sometimes referred to as swine flue – during pregnancy in 2009-2010 and complications later in life for over 60,000 Danish children.

The results support the overall safety profile of the vaccine, write the researchers, who were led by Anders Hviid, of the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen. They support the World Health Organization’s recommendations that pregnant women should get a flu vaccine.

While the CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months of age receive a flu vaccine, it’s especially important for some people – including pregnant women – who are more likely to experience complications from the virus.

“The flu in pregnancy is dangerous,” said Dr. Loralei Thornburg, a high-risk pregnancy expert at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. “We know that women who have the flu do much worse and we know their babies do worse.”

Pregnant women with influenza may be at an increased risk for premature labor and delivery, according to the CDC. There is also a greater risk of birth defects in their babies.

“There have been a lot of fears about vaccines, but the data suggest they are effective and don’t increase the risk of autism and other perinatal complications,” said Thornburg, who was not involved with the new studies. “The benefits strongly outweigh and risks or theoretical risks that we’ve seen.”

Kellyanne Conway: Trump Is Receiving Intelligence Info ‘From A Number Of Sources’

Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager to President-elect Donald Trump, refused to say Sunday if Trump is turning away daily intelligence briefings, claiming that he is receiving information “from a number of sources.”

Last week, the Washington Post reported that Trump has only received two intelligence briefings in the two and a half weeks since his election. His predecessors typically received the briefings on a daily basis.

When asked about the report on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Conway assured the host that Trump was receiving adequate information “from a number of sources,” including phone calls with world leaders, which are usually initiated through the State Department and not directly from the president-elect.

“He is receiving classified intelligence briefings, and the president-elect is also receiving information through his personal and on the phone meetings with over what’s now 41 world leaders, in addition to meeting with 60 men and women who could serve in his government but certainly without the promise of any formal position,” Conway said.

She would not say if Trump has been turning down the classified briefings.

“I can’t discuss that publicly,” she said. “What I can tell you is that he is the most engaged individual I’ve ever met and brilliant to boot, and he is certainly availing himself of the information as provided to him from a number of sources, including those intelligence briefings.”

According to Trump’s transition team, Trump has spoken to a number of world leaders, including taking congratulatory phone calls on Election Day. Trump’s team did not reach out to the State Department until the Thursday after the election

Traditionally, the State Department coordinates the president-elect’s contact with world leaders and provides briefings before he speaks to them. 

Trump’s eschewing of protocol is a concerning sign, given his utter lack of foreign policy knowledge and experience. His foreign policy proposals during the campaign included a “secret plan to fight ISIS” and an insistence that the U.S. should “take the oil” in Iraq.

In addition, Trump’s meetings with foreign leaders have come under close scrutiny for conflicts of interest between his duties as president-elect and his business enterprises. His first in-person meeting with a foreign leader, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, raised suspicions because Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who is both an executive vice president at the Trump Organization and a member of his transition team, attended. According to the company’s website, among her “primary focuses has been to bring the Trump Hotel brand to global markets.”

Trump and his children met with Indian business partners just a week after the election. Trump is involved in several real estate deals in India. He also praised his Turkish business partner during a phone call with the country’s president. And he reportedly asked Argentina’s president for help with securing building permits for a planned office tower in Buenos Aires during a congratulatory phone call. Both Trump and Argentine President Mauricio Macri denied the allegations.

If you’ve ever looked at celebrities in the media and thought to yourself; “does she really look like that? Is he that perfect?” The answer to these and other questions like this; highly doubtful. I think it started back as early as the 40’s and 50’s the onset of the “glamour” days in Hollywood. The “looks” of the media stars seem to set the tone and the quest for the flawless. Sometimes even when a healthy weight is achieved there are still parts of our bodies that in our thoughts don’t quite meet a level of beauty that the media and the fitness industry somehow has convinced us that we need to reach. As technology continues to develop so has the ability to enhance looks of perfection. In reality these folks you see in the media are just like you and me. Airbrushing, great lighting, make-up, photo shopping, injections, plastic surgery, extreme dieting prior to a movie, TV or photo shoot and other techniques are all used to create these illusions. Extreme measures many times are taken to create “the look.” This is the “glamour machine” in action. Then most likely, after the production or photo shoot because they’re human just like you and me it’s beer and pizza and or whatever the individual preference of indulgence may be.

That said, let’s talk about your body image and how this image has a huge impact on your self image. I mention the above because this concept tends to drive our thoughts, inner dialogue and self perception. These images often create unachievable expectations and sometimes can cause one to say; “why even bother?” The tendency is not to acknowledge your own individual progress or personal best because it’s not perfection. It’s important to shift the focus towards your individual goals and needs and what you can accomplish. And shift away from what is presented by the Hollywood glamour machine, the cover of the fitness magazine at the newstand or that skinny person down the street who can eat everything in site and not gain a pound. Own the fact that you are a unique being. Achieve your own personal best and not someone else’s. Your goals are real and valid. Own your own unique gifts and lead with these gifts; these talents. Be that electric person in the room who just knows who you are, is grounded and passionate about what you bring to this life. Think about it; there’s nothing more attractive than that. You’re not a failure or a bad person (self image) because you’ve gained a few pounds. (body image) The fitness industry contributes to this as well. This focus on external body perfection has always been a peeve I have with the business and I continue to work hard to shift this focus. The emphasis tends to be on the external while ignoring internal benefits and a return to health. Not that we all don’t want to look our best…that’s a huge benefit of taking great care of ourselves. However, getting optimum numbers on our yearly physicals, quality longevity, exuding a healthy glow, having mobility to play with our kids and grandkids, climb stairs, being able to mow the lawn, shovel the snow or haul the groceries in at night needs more attention. Obesity with adults and kids and healthcare costs in America are all dramatically rising every year. So what is body image? It’s a reaction you have within in response to what you see in the mirror or a picture. This encompasses the perceptions and things you tell yourself about how you feel about your body. You’re too fat, too thin, ugly, old, bloated and tired, average, amazing, fit, beautiful or whatever you tell yourself based on what you see. This is your body image. Self image is how we feel about ourselves as people, as human beings. It’s who you are as a person from the soul; self esteem. If you’re a good giving and caring person, a good parent, a great friend or sibling. Body image and self image for most everyone go hand in hand. You may have great body image but a poor self image; poor self esteem. Or you may have the opposite. Ultimately you want a healthy and positive image of both. If you’ve looked in the mirror and punished yourself for what you see based on the fact that you’ve let your health go and gained weight you get what I’m talking about here. Because you’ve let yourself go (body image) …now you’ve deemed yourself as a total failure in life. (self image) The fat on your hips and thighs, your flabby midsection, the chubby arms…these are not who you are. (body image) And because you may have let yourself go for whatever reason, you’re still the same loving giving person that you’ve always been. (self image) Your friends, family and loved ones around you know and embrace this as well. I’ve said before that being overweight for the most part is always the result of something much bigger; an injury that caused you to become inactive, a traumatic event, your need to be protected by the fat suit, depression, loss, a bad relationship or any other reason in life that took you in the wrong direction health wise. These events and the current result of being overweight again are not who you are. No need to punish yourself. And newsflash; If you’re overweight you have the power within you to do something about it.

Your body image now may not be so much that you hate yourself and where you are now. But more a feeling of disappointment that you’ve not kept the standards that you really do have for yourself. You’ve let yourself go. Truth is if these standards didn’t exist in you, your poor body image due to being fat and out of shape wouldn’t bother you at all. You’d be fat, bloated, happy and loving life. Tap your resources and put this in motion. Raise your standards, alter your perspective and move forward one step at a time but continue the move forward. Focus on your goals, your passions, your inner goodness and not the illusion of the media machine.

Avoid a “diet” as these are temporary plans that yield temporary results. If you’re not going to commit to a level that you can commit to or do it right you’re better off to stay overweight until you decide that you’re ready to do it. Then make the changes necessary to embrace a lifestyle that will get you to your goal weight and keep you there. Ultimately you to learn what I call the “skill of weight control.” Determine a weight that you realistically can attain and sustain and work with that. And this perspective will continue to have ebbs and flows. That’s okay. Just stay conscious and real about what you are willing to do.

It’s keeping standards high for the choices you make on a daily basis. Heck yes you’ll look good…absolutely! Enjoy and flaunt this great pay-off. But go even deeper on this for yourself, your health and how you’ll feel. Your energy levels will soar and there is so much out there in life that awaits you. At your physical the doctor hands you tremendous results. If you have kids, nieces or nephews you’re going to turn around one day and they’ll have kids. You want to begin now to enjoy these times later. And yes; you’ll be able to wear those benchmark jeans! Don’t wait for tragedy to wake you up forcing you to play catch up. Get off the couch and take action now. You don’t have to be perfect just be you. “Acknowledge all progress” as I say. You’ll feel better and who doesn’t want that? Love your body and who you are. Get in the game and enjoy the journey!

Disturbed By Current Politics? Here’s How To Get Involved

I don’t think I realized how little I knew about how politics worked, until I decided to do more than just write about social justice issues. Then again, with recent political events, a lot of us are looking for ways to get involved; we just don’t know what to do. The important thing to know is that we are not helpless. However, we must work together to make change.

How government works

As most of us know, there are three branches: the executive branch, or the president, legislative, or congress, and judicial, our judges. We work on a system of checks and balances so no single branch of government gets too powerful. We vote for a president and for our representatives for congress. The judicial branch is supposed to operate independently, upholding the laws of congress and the constitution. So if you vote for a Democratic president, but a Republican congress, there is most likely going to be conflict and gridlock – especially in our divided political climate – because this is all part of the checks and balances system. So what do we, as citizens, have the power to do?

1. Vote!
The United States has one of the lowest voter turnouts of developed nations, with only around 60% of eligible voters turning out for presidential elections, and roughly 40% of voters turning out for mid-term elections. We’ve grown complacent, allowing special interests and corruption to run loose without anyone to watch.

Disturbingly, a Pew Research poll showed 70% of non-voters were younger than 50, while 43% were more racially and ethnically diverse, 46% are lower income and 54% are less educated than those who vote. In other words, those who need congress to stand up for them the most are not making their voices heard.

2. Actively get informed!
Turn off your TV and do your own research. Media was invented to sell you stuff. It is not a reliable source of information when it comes to your best interests. As I’ve written, 26% of what CNN says is Mostly false, false, or outright lying, according to Politifact. The same can be said for FOX News at 59%, 35% for ABC, 45% for CBS, and 41% for NBC. News sources with exorbitant advertising income have a single agenda: get viewers coming back again and again. If they can get you emotionally vested in their content, regardless of accuracy, they have achieved their financial goal. High ratings are how they attract advertisers and the networks will stop at nothing to get you to tune in.

Do your own research on sites you don’t normally visit and ask questions of people you may not normally talk to so you can get a different perspective. The main point here is to ask questions and challenge your own beliefs about issues. Look up historical FACTS and get statistics whenever you see a meme. Critically think about whether or not what you’re reading or what you hear even makes common sense.

3. Find out who represents you in congress.
After clicking on that link, click on the links of the representatives and sign up for their newsletters. Talk to them through email and phone calls. This is what they are paid to do. You are not bothering them. They are not celebrities. They are your employees.

4. Find your personal representative for your district.
Call them. Email them and stay in touch.

5. Contact your state governor.
Make sure your governor knows who you are, what your values are and what is expected of him or her. Get on the newsletter mailing list.

6. Contact your state legislature.
From this site you, after choosing your state, you can learn what bills are coming up, being discussed and give input.

7. Get involved in community programs.
Organizations, such as VolunteerMatch.org connect you with organizations and people that share your interests. Socialbrite also helps you find companies and non-profits you can support financially, or through local volunteer opportunities. Meetup.com connects you with people who share your interests, which may or may not be politically active, but you will find like-minded, passionate people for connection and shared concerns.

As alarming as the current state of affairs is, “we the people” are still in charge of the destiny of our country. We can require our congress to act on our behalf if the president or his officials are not serving our best interests. Your phone calls and emails count. Your voice counts. Make it heard.

WATCH: Doubting You Deserve Better

It’s very difficult for us to manifest into our lives more than we believe we deserve. What do you unconsciously believe you deserve? Look around at what you’ve got at present. If you’d like things to get better, allow yourself to know the truth – you deserve better. I hope this will help.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) Your self-talk (the thoughts you have about your feelings) can make or break you. When you make a mistake, they either magnify the negativity or help you turn that misstep into something productive.

Negative self-talk is unrealistic, unnecessary, and self-defeating. It sends you into a downward emotional spiral that is difficult to pull out of.

All self-talk is driven by important beliefs that you hold about yourself. It plays an understated but powerful role in success because it can both spur you forward to achieve your goals and hold you back.

TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence (EQ) of more than a million people and found that 90% of top performers are high in emotional intelligence. These successful, high EQ individuals possess an important skill⎯the ability to recognize and control negative self-talk so that it doesn’t prevent them from reaching their full potential.

These successful people earn an average of $ 28,000 more annually than their low EQ peers, get promoted more often, and receive higher marks on performance evaluations. The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $ 1,300 to an annual salary.

When it comes to self-talk, we’ve discovered some common thoughts that hold people back more than any others. Be mindful of your tendencies to succumb to these thoughts, so that they don’t derail your career:

1. Perfection equals success. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failure, and end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish, instead of enjoying what you were able to achieve.

2. My destiny is predetermined. Far too many people succumb to the highly irrational idea that they are destined to succeed or fail. Make no mistake about it, your destiny is in your own hands, and blaming multiple successes or failures on forces beyond your control is nothing more than a cop out. Sometimes life will deal you difficult cards to play, and others times you’ll be holding aces. Your willingness to give your all in playing any hand you’re holding determines your ultimate success or failure in life.

3. I “always” or “never” do that. There isn’t anything in life that you always or never do. You may do something a lot or not do something enough, but framing your behavior in terms of “always” or “never” is a form of self-pity. It makes you believe that you have no control of yourself and will never change. Don’t succumb to it.

4. I succeed when others approve of me. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain⎯you’re never as good or bad as they say you are. It’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, but you can take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what people think about you, your self-worth comes only from within.

5. My past equals my future. Repeated failures can erode your self-confidence and make it hard to believe you’ll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, these failures result from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isn’t easy. Just remember that success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you can’t allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed.

6. My emotions equal my reality. If you’ve read Emotional Intelligence 2.0, you know how to take an objective look at your feelings and separate fact from fiction. If not, you might want to read it. Otherwise, your emotions will continue to skew your sense of reality, making you vulnerable to the negative self-talk that can hold you back from achieving your full potential.

Bringing It All Together

I hope these lessons are as useful to you as they have been to me over the years. As I write them, I’m reminded of their power and my desire to use them every day.
